Now that I’m older, I can look back on my life and clearly remember times when I took great pride

in my accomplishments, the breadth of my knowledge, and my insight into human dynamics. The

problem was that my pride bordered on, and occasionally slipped into, a sense of superiority and

hubris. At such times I was not fun to be around. The advantage of maturity is that we become

more aware of our shortcomings and, hopefully, develop a humility that appreciates the gifts that

everyone brings to the table, recognizes that we always have more to learn, and grows grateful,

rather than prideful, at the gifts we have been given.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the sense of pride that the Israelites feel from God’s choosing

them and the sense that they are, therefore, better than the people of the surrounding nations.

He also questions their habit of judging those on whom misfortune fell as more sinful than they

were. In a way, he was asking them to grow up and find the humility that comes from age, holding

them to the same standard with which they held others. He challenged them to spend less time

judging others and more time recognizing their sins and need for repentance.

That’s a hard lesson for us all, but a necessary one. If we are to accompany one another on this

journey through Lent and life, we need to know we are all the same in God’s eyes and all in need

of God’s grace to make it through .

My pride bordered on a sense of superiority and hubris.

At such times I was not fun to be around.

Parishioners are invited to get involved in our parish in many ways. Listed are some of the opportunities that you may find personally and spiritually rewarding.

Decoration Committee Members are needed to:

• Organize and decorate church and hall for events, weddings, and funerals.

Kitchen Group volunteers are needed to:

• Organize and lead new fundraising events, such as, fish fry, BBQ cookouts, enchilada nights, etc..

• Organize, plan and sell breakfast on Sunday mornings.

(You can create your own group or help an established group.)

Other opportunities in the parish:

• Altar servers are needed for all Masses.

• Musicians, especially for English Mass.

• Person to assist with photography and video.

• Person to assist with PowerPoint and A/V.

“Encontrando humildad” Por Mary Katharine Deeley

Ahora que soy mayor, puedo recordar mi vida y recordar claramente los momentos en que me

enorgullecí por mis logros, la amplitud de mi conocimiento y mi comprensión de la dinámica

humana. El problema era que mi orgullo confinaba, y ocasionalmente se deslizaba en, un sentido

de superioridad y arrogancia. En esos momentos no era divertido estar cerca. La ventaja de la

madurez es que nos hacemos más conscientes de nuestros defectos y, con suerte, desarrollamos

una humildad que aprecia los dones que todos aportan, reconoce que siempre tenemos más que

aprender y nos sentimos agradecidos, en lugar de orgullosos, de los regalos que nos ha dado.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús desafía la sensación de orgullo que sienten los israelitas por la

elección de Dios y la sensación de que son, por lo tanto, mejores que las personas de las naciones

vecinas. También cuestiona su hábito de juzgar a aquellos en quienes la desgracia cayó más

pecaminosos que ellos. En cierto modo, les estaba pidiendo que crezcan y encuentren la humildad

que viene de la edad, manteniéndolos en el mismo nivel con el que tenían los demás. Él los desafió

a pasar menos tiempo juzgando a otros y más tiempo reconociendo sus pecados y la necesidad de

arrepentirse.

Esa es una lección difícil para todos nosotros, pero necesaria. Si vamos a acompañarnos unos a

otros en este viaje a través de la Cuaresma y la vida, debemos saber que todos somos iguales a los

ojos de Dios y que todos necesitamos la gracia de Dios para salir adelante.

Mi orgullo confinaba en un sentido de superioridad y arrogancia.

En esos momentos no era divertido estar cerca.
