Large supply of Narcan donated to responders

BY CHRIS [email protected]

Eminence Apothecary recently received a large batch of overdose-reversing Narcan from Cardinal Health, but the local pharmacy can’t sell any of it. Instead the international healthcare company wants the naloxone given away to police and first responders for free.

The shipment of Narcan comes as a part of Cardinal Health’s Opioid Action Program, launched by the company to donate more than 80,000 doses to communities in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, according to a news release. Company officials decided to distribute the Narcan Nasal Spray because it’s the only nal-oxone project that doesn’t require assembly or any specialized medical training to use.

“This donation is part of Cardinal Health’s Opioid Action Program, a multi-million dol-lar, four-state pilot initiative launched last year designed to help some of the nation’s hardest-hit areas fight the opioid epidemic,” according to the news release. “The program has delivered front-line tools to help prevent opioid abuse and sup-port communities, schools and first responders in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.”

In all, Cardinal Health will provide 864 units of Narcan to Henry County during this effort, a value of $102,000, according to Drane Stephens, the pharmacist at Eminence Apothecary.

Stephens applied to the healthcare company for the assistance.

“They said that they wanted to be an active part of the solution for the opioid epidemic,” he explained. “They felt if they would make more

Henry County is fertile ground for agricultural education and educatorsBY TAMMY SHAW

[email protected]

As five days worth of special educational activities during Ag Week at Henry County High School approaches April 30, the current ag teacher reflected that she and many colleagues have thrived in the county’s rural environment.

Whether it’s attributable to Henry County’s supportive citizens or low cost of living, a healthy crop of ag instruc-tors have lived and taught here through the years.

Henry County boasts at least six current and past ag educa-

tors, including Lindsey Davie, Kylen Douglas, Eddie Nelson, Dave Stahl, Todd Stephens and Kristan Wright, whose efforts to teach agriculture and positively influence young lives impact many students.

Lindsey Davie Davie, Henry County High

School’s current ag teacher, grew up in Hardin County around cattle, horses, tobacco and hay.

Hardin Central High School enjoyed one of the largest FFA chapters in the state when Davie attended and the district employed four agriculture

instructors at the same time. These four instructors

forged Davie’s love of the industry and as a junior, she decided to pursue ag educa-tion as a career.

“My ag teachers were pretty awesome,” she said. “They thought I could do about any-thing and I learned to believe them.”

Davie never visited Henry County before her interview at HCHS except on Interstate 71 drive-bys in the family car.

But before Davie went to her interview, she traveled around the county.

“I thought it was beauti-

ful,” she recalled. “When they offered me the job, I commit-ted to it and have been here ever since.”

The primary focus for ag teachers is to push students to be successful, she said. “I don’t want students to master a test — I want them to mas-ter life.”

Davie challenges kids in her classroom to think, solve prob-lems, understand hard work, be kind and fair and to put their best into everything, she said.

Three of the ag teachers — Davie, Kylen Douglas and Kristan Wright — serve as

regional officers of KAAE — the Kentucky Association of Agricultural Educators.

“We make a great team,” Davie said of the Henry County based ag teachers.

In 2014, the Kentucky Association of Career and Technical Education Teachers honored Davie as its New Teacher of the Year and the National Association of Career and Agricultural Educators, Region 4, and named her as Outstanding New Member in the same year.

Accolades didn’t stop there.

Positive PowerPosters to inspire others to live without drugs, alcohol

BY CHRIS [email protected]

Instead of focusing on the possibly dire results of drug and alcohol use, organizers of the VIP poster campaign hope providing positive role models among students

will inspire others to live clean.

To that end, the Henry County Kentucky ASAP board members cooper-ated with Eminence and Henry County educators to create inspirational posters and highlight youth who will set good

examples in the commu-nity. VIP is an abbrevia-tion of Very Important Partner.

Organizers selected 21 students — 11 from Henry County High and 10 from Eminence — from teacher recommen-dations, interviewed the

young people, took their pictures and gathered inspirational quotes from each to include on the posters, which they will hang in schools and local businesses.
