Low fuel consumption and enginereliability has seen Gregoire choosePerkins to power its vineyardequipment.

Established in the 1970s to buildmachinery to harvest grapes,Gregoire initially focused on towedmodels, but since the 1990s it hasproduced a complete range ofautomotive harvesting machines tocover the whole mechanisedharvest market.

Ten years ago the companydiversified its business to cover thewhole vineyard mechanisationprocess.

With the acquisition of Paris, viticulture sprayers manufacturer, andthe integration of Lagarde, a producerof tools dedicated to vineyardmanagement, Gregoire became aworldwide supplier of equipmentdedicated to vineyard mechanisation.

Over the years the Gregoirebrand has continued to build itsreputation and success on twostrong bases of optimum qualityand reduced maintenance costs.

According to Gregoire its designand conception plays a key role inachieving these goals, in addition toworking with the right partnersamongst its suppliers.

They must share the samevision and also enable us to provideour customers a qualitative, reliableproduct and, if appropriate, a fastand efficient service, said MCausse, product manager atGregoire.

So when it came to choose oneof the machinerys most importantcomponents, the engine, Gregoiredecided to opt for Perkins.

    This decision was based on therange offered by Perkins whichcovered all its power needs;

product reliability, and a highperformance for a reduced fuelconsumption.

The fact that Perkins enginesfeature a compact gauge was alsoan important point for Gregoire, whose machinery is used inconditions where precision, whilemoving through the vines, is veryimportant.

Because of this Gregoires G132grape harvesting machine isequipped with an 1104D-E44TA114hp, while its G140 olive picking-machine is fitted with an1106DE66TA.

In addition to the engine, theproduct support offered by Perkinsnational distributor for France,Secodi and its dealer network, wasan important factor in Gregoiresengine choice.

Gregoires products arecurrently distributed to theviticulture market in France, Italy,Spain, South Africa, Australia, NewZealand, South and North America,Central and Eastern Europe.

In these areas the partnershipwith Perkins has proved to be ofenormous benefit to both Gregoireand its clients, whose needs havebeen quickly responded to.

To see how the engines wouldwork in the field the trial modelswere distributed to selected OEMsaround the globe for situationaltests, checks and evaluation.

Keen to see how the new enginemodel would react in the MiddleEast climate, Perkins enlisted thehelp of Ghaddar Machinery.

An OEM for Perkins Engines inLebanon for 28 years, GhaddarMachinery hosted the trial of thenew Perkins 2200 series engine areplacement engine for the 2300series, in its range of 350 to 450kVA@ 50Hz generating sets.

Perkins new 2200 series has avariety of options to satisfy themarket requirements for newemission regulations and low fuelconsumption.

Ghaddar Machinery wasspecifically asked to test the Perkins2206A-E13TAG3 engine.

I welcome this step from Perkinsand respect the trust Perkins grantsGhaddar Machinery. For 28 years,we have worked as partners inbusiness and Perkins never failed ourexpectations, said MohamedGhaddar, chairman of GhaddarMachinery Co.

Upon receipt of the trial engine atGhaddar Machinerys factory, itsservice engineers Leyla Ghaddar,Mohamed Shaath and OssamaGhaddar, performed both initial andcontinuous checks and supervisedthe running of the engine.

Although the engine shape isdifferent and smaller in size, theelectrical fittings and wiring of the2200 series is compatible with the2300 series, with few modificationssuch as the location of the magneticPick-up MPU.

Ghaddar Machinery said thecommunication with ECM throughthe electronic service tool (EST)software and the diagnostic code

reader (DCR) tool had beenimproved with the new generationof the Electronic Control ModuleECM, the ADEM-4.

ADEM-4 enjoys a 32-bitarchitecture, with a 120-pin engineconnector and a 70-pin OEMconnector. Its microprocessoroperates at 40 MHz, which is 66 percent faster than ADEM-3, while itsflash ROM capacity has beendoubled to 2 MB.

Ghaddar Machinery also foundthere was a noticeable reduction inthe fuel consumption used by the2200 series, in comparison to the2300 series.

The engines 400 kVA generatingset operated in parallel with two other500 kVA units, powered by Perkins2806C-E16TAG2 and 135kVApowered by Perkins 1006TAG. Thisspecial application powers Ghaddarsfactories and headquarters in SouthLebanon and is managed through aWoodward EGCP2 synchroniser/loadsharer to satisfy Ghaddar Machineryspower needs.

The trial engine has now passed2,000 hours and is still runningsatisfactorily under the supervision ofGhaddar Machinerys engineers, whohave kept in regular contact withPerkins Stafford regarding theengines performance.

In turn, Perkins engineers havecontinuously updated GhaddarMachinery with advice andinformation on modifications neededto improve the engine performanceand increase its reliability.

The engine is now due to returnto Stafford where it will bethoroughly inspected by Perkinsengineers.

Perkins is currently gathering thedata from its trial engines which havebeen operating at 1500rpm and1800rpm, both as emissionscompliant models C and D, and thenon-compliant model A.

The 2200 Series engine range, which will satisfy the need of Perkinscustomers and users, will beavailable from July 2008.

Setting the standard: The new 2200Series will be available from July.

    Peak of performance

    Perkins unveils genset options

When youre based in an Italian mountain range4,559m above sea level, its invaluable to have areliable source of power.

Because of this the Queen Margherita AlpineRefuge has chosen Perkins to power its generatorsfor more than 28 years.

Perched on the very summit of Punta Gnifetti, inthe Monte Rosa massif one of the most beautifulmountain ranges found in Europe the Italian AlpineClub opened the Queen Margherita Alpine Refuge in1893. The creation of the refuge, which was locatedat an unprecedented altitude, proved no mean featas it involved flattening the peak that was to houseit.

In the late 1970s, after almost a century ofuninterrupted activity, the refuge was modernisedand enlarged to offer greater comfort for thethousands of heroic mountaineers who, year in,year out, brave nature to reach this breathtakinglybeautiful alpine spot. More recently the refuge hasalso become a research centre.

Given the need to ensure optimal equipmentperformance, heating and electric power which sucha facility requires, the refuge decided in 1979 toinstall a generating set equipped with the sturdyPerkins 4.236 engine.

The generating set performed faultlessly for 26years, running up as many as 30,000 hours of work.At an altitude of 4,559m very heavy demands areplaced on an engine with oxygen rarefactionadversely affecting engine combustion. Because ofthis top quality components are needed to ensure

reliability, high performance and a long engine life.In 2005, Canazza, which manages the Queen

Margherita Refuge installations and equipment, asked the Perkins service dealer located inSandigliano (BI) and run by Angelo Bertinazzi, torenew the generator, although it was still in workingorder.

Keen to install a more powerful generating set, capable of meeting the new needs of the mountainrefuge, Canazza was determined to continue with aPerkins engine due to the reliability of the 4.236.

Another reason for staying with Perkins was theafter-sales service offered by Mr Bertinazzi, whoguaranteed full availability (24 hour/7 days) forordinary and emergency maintenance interventionswhich, given the altitude and the peculiar weather

conditions in the area, is normally only possible atshort notice when the weather is settled andhelicopters can fly.

Having chosen Perkins and Mr Bertinazzi, PerkinsAlessandro Ferrario was brought in to providetechnical advice and tailored suggestions such as theinstallation of an extra heat exchanger on theengines water-cooling system so as to use the hotwater generated to heat the facility.

Once the solutions were found, it was decidedthat VISA SPA should supply the generating set.Known for its set design and production, the VISAtechnical team was eager to take up the challengeoffered by the Queen Margherita Alpine Refuge.

The soundproofed generating group, equippedwith a 1104A-44TG2 Perkins engine generating 80kVA prime power, was installed to power and heatthe refuge over the coming years, while ensuring theutmost efficiency.

The new generating group has now been runningfor more than 2,000 hours without any problems.Canazza has also seen incredible reductions in dieselconsumption, an important issue for the refugewhich must fly in all its fuel by helicopter.

Keen to ensure the engine complements itsenvironment, Perkins engineers have devised specialelectronic engine settings so that every morning theengine starts up, leaving no visible exhaust blacksmoke.

At more than 4,500 metres above sea level this isa truly astonishing result which respects theenvironment and the beauty of the location.

Extreme conditions: The generating group, whichfeatures Perkins 1104A-44TG2 engine, is aninvaluable lifeline for everyone at the refuge.

Vital link: Due to its altitude, allmaterials needed by the refuge, including diesel, must be deliveredby helicopter.

An emerging forcePerkins Engines has been part of the industrialscene in Turkey for many years. Go back to 1964when the company signed an agreement withMassey Fergusons licensee, Uzel, to build enginesfor the domestic tractor market and it is nosurprise that the Perkins brand has become oneof the best known and widely respected inTurkey.

Today Perkins engines account for 85 per centof Uzels total production and it is estimated thatof the one million tractors currently in use, morethan 400,000 are Uzel-built Masseys, equippedwith a blue engine. Over the years Perkins hasmanaged to meet market expectations supplyinga mix of models including the 1103, 1104 and3152 engines, to power such stalwart tractors likethe MF 240, which accounts for 50 per cent ofcurrent sales, and the new MF288G, the mostrecent model introduction.

As with many OEMs Perkins has successfullytailored its product to local tastes with thecombination of the 3152 and latterly the 1103Cmodels meeting changing needs as Uzel vicepresident, Ibrahim Aksoy, explains: Farmers arelooking at more sophisticated options for theirvehicles, but fuel consumption is the mainconcern. In Turkey fuel is very expensive. Thusthree-cylinder engines are very popular, as theyare perceived as having better fuel consumption. At the same time the market need is for more

power and more torque, and we needed tointroduce three-cylinders with higher powerratings.

Perkins is also helping Uzel meet thechallenge of meeting EU emissions legislationwhich is being adopted by the Turkish authoritiesas part of the drive towards EU accession. The3152 which powers the best selling MF240, isbeing given a face-lift to upgrade it to Stage 2 withseveral technical enhancements including animproved fuel injection system. In doing so Uzel isgiving the MF240 an important new lease of lifeand protecting future sales of its iconic model.

With more than 40 years experience in theTurkish agricultural market it is no surprise thatPerkins counts a number of other agriculturemanufacturers among its OEM customers.

The likes of Erkunt, Hattat and Yagmur, while smaller than Uzel, which counts itself inthe top ten tractor manufacturers in the world, are taking advantage of Perkins expertise, rangelineup and single platform strategy to developmodels with overseas markets in mind. Erkuntand Hattat are using the 1103C-33T models fortheir respective 60, 70 and 80 hp tractors whileYagmur is taking two 400 Series units the403D-15 and 404D-22 to build a range ofcompact garden tractors. In fact Yagmur has justannounced that it is appointing several overseasdistributors to build its export business.

Founded in 1961 the IlkerlerAutomotive Group is based inBayrampasa, Istanbul.

In 1999 Ilkerler became adistributor of Perkins industrialengines and spare parts, and in2002 was appointed as a full linedistributor of Perkins in Turkey.

Dealing with the Perkins 400to 4000 Series range Ilkerler sells

to and provides technical andservice support to many TurkishOEMs.

Ilkerler has also won Perkinsprestigious Power Awardprogramme on a number ofoccasions.

Cukurova Ithalat, part of theindustrial giant Cukurova Holdings, has been a Perkins customer for 15years.

As one of Turkeys biggestgenset manufacturers, the companyhas been at the forefront ofmeeting both prime and standbypower demand as the domesticeconomy has grown, catering for

applications from factories andcommercial offices to shoppingcentres and hotels. The 4000Series engine is the backbone ofthe companys main range ofproducts and the team regularlyvisit Perkins Stafford to keepabreast of developments.

Cukurova Ithalat has alsobroadened its operations, taking

advantage of the countrys locationto serve emerging markets to theeast, Iran, Iraq and Africa. Exportsnow account for about 60 per centof total production thanks to thedemand in power generation andthe growth in telecommunications. This has led to the company takingincreased volumes of the 1100 and2000 Series.

Turkish equipment OEMs are an emerging power on the world stage. Powernewsexamines Perkins role in their ongoing success.

Perkins involvement with the constructionequipment sector, while not quite as lengthy asthat with the agricultural sector, still extends tosome 20 years. The company has been poweringHidromek backhoe loaders since 1988. As MerihOzgem, sales and after sales coordinator, explains:

The key reason [for choosing Perkins] 20years ago was the good brand recognition in theTurkish market as well as the spotless reputation, especially where servicing and spare parts wereconcerned.

He recalls a popular saying in the industrythat alluded to the general availability of parts:You can buy Perkins spare parts in drugstores. While pharmacies might not be todayspreferred method of distribution, Hidromek hastaken on board the sentiment and sees theaftersales activity as being vitally important.Indeed the business boasts of never being morethan 100km away from any Turkish customerand of being able to respond to any call withinthe same day.

Currently Hidromek tops the list of thebackhoe manufacturers domestically with a 31per cent share of the market thanks to itsPerkins-powered HMK 102B and 102S models. At Bauma last year it exhibited its new 102HiConcept backhoe, a highly revised modelfeaturing a new stylish operator cabin andimproved ergonomics, mated with the Stage 3a-compliant engine.

Another equipment OEM, Cumitas, whichmakes forklifts, wheeled and backhoe loadersunder the Cukurova brand, has pursued a policyof utilising worldwide recognised components andthe latest technologies to increase its marketshare significantly in both local and global markets. The companys export sales director, Gul Nalcaci, cited the importance of the Perkins brand tocreate model differentiation for their marketplacewhich now includes Europe, North Africa, MiddleEast and the CIS. Perkins is currently supplyingthe 1104C-44T to power its new workhorse, the880 Powershuttle backhoe.

Without doubt Turkey is an emerging forcethese days. With EU accession on the agenda, market liberalisation to the fore, lower interestrates encouraging companies to borrow andinvest, there are clear signs that the country ismaking great strides in establishing a moresustainable and robust economy.

Many of Perkins Turkish customers arecontributing to this growth as they seek tobuild not only market share in the domesticmarket but also look to export increasingnumbers of their machines to the rest of theworld.

The likes of Uzel Agri, Hidromek,Cukurova, Erkunt and Hattat are defining theirproducts by incorporating world-classcomponents such as Perkins engines toprovide credibility in new markets.

  • John Levick of John Levick Associates presents aspecial report into the impact of Tier 4 emissionslegislation and the implications for OEMs.

Ever since the introduction ofemissions legislation for off-highwayengines in 1998, the finaldestination for the regulators hasbeen to arrive at a point in timewhen industrial diesel engines emitlittle or no pollutants. In 2011 theindustry will take a huge stepforward towards that low or noemissions era for most engines upto 560kW when Tier 4 Interimregulations come into effect. Inshort the new standards willrequire emissions reductions ofparticulate matter (PM) by 90%and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) up to50% beyond current EPA Tier3/EU Stage IIIA standards.

To put this in context the off-highway diesel engine industry hasachieved quite staggering reductionsin emissions in just 13 years. It issurely testimony to the capabilitiesand skills of engine manufacturersand flexibility of machine buildersthat that this progress has been soswift and together they have beenable to meet what has been a verycompressed schedule of newemissions legislation.

For Perkins Engines Tier 4represents one more step on theroad to the zero engine, a conceptwith which the business has lived forsome years now. Over the nextthree years, Tier 4 INTERIM and

Tier 4 FINAL will be implementedand represent a significant change tothe architecture of the enginesystem and a significant milestone onthe journey to the realisation of thezero engine concept.

What is important about theconcept is that it encapsulates adesire to meet future emissionschallenges without compromisingthose attributes for which Perkinshas become well known.

For OEMs the spectre of Tier 4 islooming and that prospect should beenough to get their attention.Previously OEMs took emissionscompliance in their stride looking totheir engine suppliers to provide the

necessary emissions friendly engineswhile still expecting improvements inpower here and reductions in fuelconsumption there. This timearound the game has changed. Itsno longer an incremental shift, its aseismic one!

So what does Tier 4 mean forengine development and ultimatelyfor OEMs? It will certainly mean theintroduction of enhancedtechnologies, both internal andexternal to the engine to reduceNOx formation and PM. Theintroduction of optional systemssuch as Diesel Particulate Filters(DPF) and SCR may be used whenTier 4 Final arrives.

It is the advent of suchaftertreatment systems that will bethe most evident and physicallychallenging in terms of enginepackaging. Diesel particulate filtersor DPFs and the accompanying filterregeneration equipment will add tothe overall installation volume. Thismeans a rethink for OEMs when itcomes to the design of equipment. In addition OEMs will need tocombat the high surface and gastemperatures, which someregeneration methods produce.

Of equal concern is the dramaticeffect the new regulations will haveon equipment during its working life.In addition to certifying product at

the factory gate, legislators will bekeeping a close eye on the machinemaintaining that certified level ofemissions performance for at least75% of its working life. Theimplications for the aftermarket arehuge with service and maintenancework now having to include a varietyof aftertreatment tasks such asemptying ash deposits fromparticulate filters.

Needless to say Perkins Engines isalready working with its OEMcustomers to produce a viable roadmap that will provide them with aclear line of sight as 2011approaches.As the saying goes in the world ofnewspapers: watch this space!

  • levels and better transient response. This expectation will undoubtedly

be more difficult to satisfy in the faceof the forthcoming Tier 4 regime, butit is one that engine manufacturerscannot afford to shy away from.

Against this challenging backdrop,Perkins Engines has committed asubstantial investment to establishand build a new transient test facilitythat will allow not only thedevelopment of a new generation ofTier 4-compliant engines, but also totailor those engines to specificapplications by improving the desiredtransient response.

The facility houses two newdynamic test beds capable of runningcycles for the development andcertification of the next generation ofproduct.

Its two test beds one capable ofrunning engines rated up to 450kW(600hp) and the other to test enginesrated up to 275kW (370hp) allowengineers to test the full range ofproducts from 0.5-9.0 litres, whetherthey have two, three, four, six ormore cylinders.

The beds contain some of themost advanced emissionsmeasurement equipment in theworld. The emissions analysers arehoused in an airconditionedemissions suite situated behind thebeds, which provide the necessarystable environment.

    The location of the instruments

being as close as possible to theengine under test allows the use ofvery short sample lines ensuring thebest possible transient responsefrom the instruments.

New transient test cycles willcomply with the forthcomingEnvironmental Protection Agency(EPA) Tier 4 North Americanemissions legislation for off-highwaymachines against which allmanufacturers product will berequired to comply from 2010onwards.

The beds are also capable ofcertifying engines against otherterritorial/national standards forEurope, Japan and China to name afew.

All test cycles are executed usingfully automated test bed controlsystems, which manage the bedfacilities at the same time asinstructing the engine control systemsand the instrumentation/ samplingsystems on what is required.

It captures and stores all test data asit is generated, which is then directlysupplied to the engineers for analysisand interpretation at their desk.

Power from the engine on test isabsorbed using the latest ACdynamometer technology. Thesemachines are also capable of drivingthe engine when motoring cyclesare required for engine development.

The control systems and testhardware are able to simulate real

machine installations and, importantly, allow engineers to tailorengine control maps to specificmachine requirements.

The beds have the capability tomeasure over 100 dedicated enginedata channels some at speeds of upto 1,000 times per second. Thesechannels include temperatures, pressures, airflow, fuel flow andcylinder pressures.

Emissions measurements includeparts-per million concentrations ofNOx, CO, CO2, O2, hydrocarbonsand PM. Simultaneously; the controlsystems can also monitor over 100test facility data channels.

To ensure every test is completelyrepeatable, combustion air is filteredand then adjusted for temperatureand humidity before it is fed directlyinto the engine. Similarly, engine fuelis conditioned and heated to an exact

temperature before being supplied tothe engine.

In addition, this allows worldwideair and fuel ambient conditions andmachine conditions to be replicatedin the test cell supply, allowing theproduct to be thoroughly developedwith the machine and operatingenvironment in mind, as well asemission legislation.

The new beds are the only facilityof its kind in the UK. It represents amajor capital investment for Perkinsand will place its engineers at theforefront of Tier 4 developmenttechnology, and ideally positioningthe company for future productdevelopment and certificationprogrammes which can only begood news for OEM customers.

Above: Increasing use of compactmachinery with high power densities, such as the 403D-15T pictured, isbecoming a prevalent trend in the off-highway sector.

This article appears courtesyof IVT Magazine.

Allister Dennis, who leads Perkins Voice of theCustomer to define user needs and is responsible fornew product introduction, explains how Perkins isproviding improved transient response while catering forOEMs demanding higher performance and reduced fuelconsumption from ever-cleaner engines.

Its fair to say that expectation isboth a curse and a challenge. In theoff highway market, as in manyothers, the expectation put on OEMsis that their new vehicle will bebetter than the existing model.

For engine manufacturers, thesame onus is put on them by OEMs that a new engine will be better thanits predecessor, delivering morepower while using less fuel andoperating more quietly.

And to be fair, diesel enginemanufacturers have done a good jobdelivering incremental improvementsacross the board in the face of evermore stringent emissions regulations.

During the introduction of Tier 3/Stage IIIA, which by generalagreement was the biggesttechnological challenge to date,OEMs were still expecting furtherimprovements.

Questions were asked: Isdriveability going to be better thanTier 2 versions? Is there going to beless visible smoke both at start upand during the duty cycle? Power andtorque will both be better, wontthey? Is it going to use more fuel? Will package size alter?

In response, engine manufacturerswere able to provide reassurancethat, in the main, there were positiveoutcomes all round. However, whilethe above are broad indicators ofengine performance andimprovements therein, there is one

question that is application specific. That concerns transient response

in other words, how good is theengine at doing the job the machineis intended to do? Rightly or wrongly, transient response is often the arbiterof how good an engine is deemed tobe.

Engine manufacturers might makeall sorts of performance claims butthe litmus test is how a machinereacts to a number of differentsituations when at work. How doesthe engine respond when applying asudden load? How does the machinefeel to the operator when

accelerating from a standing startwith a heavy load, or whenaccelerating through the speedrange?

Though the answers might beentirely subjective, it is stillincumbent upon enginemanufacturers to strive to improvetransient response even whenelements such as emissions legislationare conspiring against them. Asmentioned earlier, there isundoubtedly an expectation fromOEMs that, with each newgeneration of engine, there will be aconcomitant increase in performance

State of the art: Perkins transient test facility which is capable ofoptimising engine and performance from 0.5-9 litres.

  • How one distributors response to a major natural disaster earned it aPerkins Sales Leadership Award.

If its true that every cloud has asilver lining, then the people ofLouisiana and Mississippi ought tohave a lifetime supply of the shinymetal, because Hurricane Katrina, inAugust, 2005, brought them a wholelot of clouds, plus wind, rain, flooding, and general misery.

And, while most of the worldsattention was focused on the coastaldamage, Katrina packed a devastatingpunch far inland as well.

Were 125 miles from the coast, explains Mary Shapley, divisionmanager of Taylor Power in Richland,Mississippi, and we had sustained 90mile per hour winds for hours asKatrina passed through. The damagehere in Richland, in nearby Jackson, and towns all around us simply wasincredible.

Taylor Power is one of the tenoriginal Perkins Master Distributors inNorth America, and more importantto this story, a major supplier ofPerkins-powered gensets tocustomers throughout the UnitedStates. Taylor has 50 dealers, includingone in South Korea, and prior toKatrina its business was primarilybuilding generators for the poultry, intermodal, commercial, and trailermounted generator industries.

Nobody includes a hurricane intheir business plan, says Mary, butKatrina certainly has changed the waywe do business. Since the catastrophe, our business has increasedtremendously, and most of that isdirectly related to disasterpreparedness and homeland securityconcerns.

State and federal governmentagencies and grants for disaster relief, plus heightened anti-terrorismawareness have driven our sales. Itsall part of the new be ready FEMAmodel put in place since Katrina.

Katrinas impact on Taylor Powersbusiness was great enough to earn

them Perkins Sales Leadership Awardfor the highest sales volume of 1106Dengines by any Master Distributor in2006.

Most of those engines went intoemergency gensets supplied tocustomers, including the MississippiEmergency Management Agency(MEMA), the poultry industry, variousmunicipalities, and cellular telephonecompanies.

Mary says there are six 1106D-powered, 140 kW trailer-mountedgensets that Taylor has delivered toMEMA; they are the latest addition tothe agencys preparedness arsenal.

Taylor Power has taken good careof us, says Charlie Smith, MEMAbureau director for operations. Wehave a great relationship with them.

Mary also points to the cellulartelephone industry as a model ofdisaster preparedness. CellularSouth was well prepared for thehurricane, she said. They werevery smart and prepared. Therewere 500 or so our gensetspowering their cell phone towersfrom Memphis to the Gulf Coast,

and they operated right through thehurricane.

Taylors response to the customerand their needs are the true silverlining of the Katrina experience forMary and the 35 other Tayloremployees who delivered far aboveand beyond the call of duty during thecrisis.

This company has always been anemployee-oriented business, Marysays. We let our people know wherethe gensets theyre building are goingand what they will be used for. Weare a team in every sense of theword, and always have been.

But, she adds, Katrina gave us achance to show everyone just howimportant that is.

In one case, a local Richland nursing

home was depending on emergencypower supplied by a genset from oneof Taylors competitors. When itfailed, the engine manufacturer wasnot prepared or able to repair it, andthe nursing home went dark.

The nursing home administratorand the Mayor of Richland came toTaylor seeking help. Taylor sent a

service engineer to the nursing hometo repair the genset, even though themalfunctioning engine was not aPerkins.

Our service engineer got the unitup and running and because of thateffort, The City of Richland bought alot of generators from Taylor afterKatrina and the double whammy,Hurricane Rita. (Hurricane Ritaripped through the Louisiana-Mississippi area a month after Katrina.)

We worked 14 hours a daybuilding gensets; it was a turning pointfor our business, said Mary.Customers saw what were made of:dependable, reliable, and committedto our communities and to them.

Taylor also supplied gensets to thePort of Gulfport, Mississippi, whichwas hit hard by Katrina where most ofthe infrastructure was gone andcontainers and generators had beenswept off to sea. Taylor gensetsprovided power to a large number ofcontainers of perishable goods.

Everyone did whatever wasneeded to be done and they did it totheir best ability, Mary says. It wastough because our own employeeshad loved ones that needed help ortheir own homes had damage or werewithout electricity; you saw the goodin people and you saw the bad itwas a most trying experience.

Katrina taught us a lot. Inparticular it taught us the absolutenecessity of engine maintenance andclean fuel. Because of this experienceand of contaminated fuel or fuel thathad just been sitting for a long periodof time, we now supply a free bottleof conditioner with a biocide for everyTaylor generator we sell. New Tier 3engines like the 1106D simply canttolerate dirt and the filters needchanging. Education to the customeris vital on the importance ofmaintenance and clean fuel.

Fuel was worth its weight in gold,

Mary said of the days immediately afterKatrina. There were a lot of fuelissues; I even siphoned fuel from myvehicle to get the lift trucks going sowe could build generators.

One evening, after hurricane Ritahad come through two weeks afterKatrina hit - I had to be in Shreveport,Louisiana, Mary recalls, I went to astore to pick up something. The clerkat the store took one look at me andsaid, Are you an evacuee? I said, No,I build gensets for a living. I paid the billand went home and just went to bed.

Those hectic days are now past, butneither Taylor Power nor its customershave forgotten the lessons they learned

the hard way. Preparedness is now away of life in the parts of Mississippiand Louisiana devastated by Katrina.

Before Katrina, our customersincluded the poultry industry, intermodal, telecommunication, andlots of stand-by applications. Today, weare also serving state and localgovernments with equipment for bothemergency response and anti-terrorismprograms, Mary notes.

But, regardless of the application, the mindset of every customer wehave served since Katrina has beenthe same - be ready. We were, andwe are. We just hope we never getanother chance to prove it the wayKatrina did.
