GM’s First Autonomous Car Heads to Henry Ford Museum

General Motors has donated its first self-driving car, a 3-year-old Chevy Bolt electric car modified for

autonomous operation, to the Henry Ford Museum. The car, GM Cruise Automation 01, will be on display immediately.

“It’ll be right at the front of the auto display, where we explain to people what a car is,” The Henry Ford trans-portation curator Matt Anderson said Tuesday. The white hatchback, which sprouts sensors like a cat’s whiskers, will be next to a ’59 Cadillac in the museum’s "Driving America" collection. “It’s a very special vehi-cle.”

“Autonomous vehicles will change people’s lives for-ever,” GM president Mark Reuss said as he presented the car to the museum. GM built the preproduction Bolt EV at its Orion assembly plant north of Detroit in March 2016.

Since then, it accumulated more than 12,000 miles of autonomous driving, many of those miles on public streets in San Francisco.

GM plans to have autonomous vehicles in commercial service in an American city this year, Reuss said, declin-ing to give a specific site or date. Whether those vehi-cles operate without a human backup driver on board will depend how far advanced the car’s safety systems are, Reuss said. “We learn new things every day,” he added.

It’s widely expected that program will run in San Fran-cisco, where Cruise Automation is based.The Orion plant is building autonomous Bolts regular-ly, Reuss said, adding that the current models have smaller and more sophisticated sensors than the bulky ones festooning AV 01. The latest versions of the GM Cruise AV don’t even have a steering wheel, making them the highest level of autonomous vehicle.

The car is the Henry Ford Museum’s first AV, Patricia Mooradian, president and CEO of The Henry Ford, said. The museum celebrates all forms of American innova-tion. It has a huge collection of cars from many manu-facturers, aircraft, horse-drawn streetcars and more. The museum adds just one or two vehicles to its collec-tion each year. Few go on immediate display like AV 01.

SAFETY REVIEW BOARD/February 28, 2019 SAFESTART TRAINING UPDATE - The next training is EAU 1 Sprains & Strains. This will start in March. This is a mandatory training. HRIAC TEAM UPDATE Reviewed the Hazard & Risk Identification – 2019 Results. - 10 hazards have been identified in the workbook.- 9 hazards added to Hazard Risk InventoryPeople Engag.– Hazards by Source chart Reflects 18/19 data. 15 from Standardized Work Review, 13 from Fall Haz Comm, 11 are from Employee Concerns, 8 from SOT, 7 from SCT, 4 from Oth-er, 2 from Go & See, 1 from Pre-Task Plan, 1 from BPD BoardWORKPLACE SAFETY SYSTEM REVIEW Reviewed Element 2.1 Identification of Regulatory Requirements and GM Standards. Highlights of Performance Standard: o RCAT – US Regulatory Compliance Assessment Tool. This was completed on 8-31-18. There were 1154 questions – 789 Yes, 345 N/A and 19 No, which requires countermeasures.- Evidence of implementation of all departments and all shifts: o 43 Regulatory Compliance items. Ex: Aerial Lift, Asbestos, etc. o SOT questions refer regulatory requirement questions. Evi-dence would be SOT findings/fixes and layered audit results.- Areas of improvement/upcoming changes for next 12 months: o 2019 will have another RCAT with minimal changes.Corrective action plan: o 19 CAP’s in the CAP tracker. SENTINEL EVENT SUMMARY Reviewed the Sentinel Event sum-mary. -Make-up air units: Mark said the date has been extended until 9/1/19. There are changes that need to occur during down peri-ods. All working units are in the process of being evaluated. Sev-en have gone through the evaluation by Sponseller. Is roof is rated accurately? Structural assessment on the roof every 5 years and a roof assessment every year. It is supported by truss structures. – Lightning arrestor. Al said Jim has completed the follow-up. Need to close in Reliance. All follow-up items have been cap-tured. Will be closing this out this week.- Hatch: Mark said Rob from Sponseller is working on the design. FOLLOW-UP - Reviewed the probation letter for lockout and the scorecard. The 3rd quarter audit is due March 29. At 27%. Encourage to get

people thru this. Rob said to make sure we space this out to get Denise enough time to get this into the system. Don’t wait until the last day. - Reviewed a safety incident from Bedford. A team of die setters were assigned the task of lifting a trim die and rotating the top over. They rigged chains to the top of the die using both the main hoist and the aux hoist. A 4-hook sling was used on each crane hoist. The two unused hooks were not choked up to clear the load. As the employees took slack from chains and rigging to be-gin the lift, one of the unused hooks became caught on the trim die. The hook slipped off and hit one of the employees across the right side of his face where he sustained a laceration that required 6 stitches. Rick said we have a problem with this in the plant. We have production people in Plant 2 that are hooking up wrong. Core boxes weigh a lot and people are lifting improperly. Ed said this was brought up in HRI. What is the frequency of hoisting and rigging training. Maybe there is a need for a refresher. Al said he can notify everyone to have hooks in the right place. If there is a standardized work, we can see if it needs updated. Ed said he is in the process of putting together a communication on hoisting and will do a 100% contact. Tom asked when we get new employee’s in production jobs, do they get rigging training? Mark said he thinks it gets flagged in Training. Rob asked Mark to follow-up on this. Rick said this has been brought up many times. Why does it take an incident to get this discussion and get something done? - Reviewed a follow-up from Bupyeong KD Shop where the em-ployee fell through a false ceiling. Reviewed a follow-up with more information on the incident. The employee asked a forklift driver to lift him up and on to the top of the team office. Once he stepped on to the roof, he fell through the false ceiling. - Reviewed the open items from PIV. There are 4 open items. o Inset south door of GSC cage. Target date changed to 4/1/19. o Complete install of truck gate crossing arms. Baker Shindler sending quote. The target date is 3/31/19. o Stencil handicap spots for Plant 2 parking lot. This is on track for March. The signs got moved. The target date is 3/15/19. o White/Red dock casting storage lanes. Need railing removed to allow FIFO pull through lanes. Looking for weekend support. The target date is 3/11/19. Tom asked why does it take 2 months to get 2 posts but he appreciates the effort. Rob will look into it. ROUNDTABLE Need to come up with an emergency plan when RTO drops/goes down. Have 1-Pager. Looked at video of fumes that linger for about 45 minutes. Reviewed what was learned from the event that happened this week. Working on getting the emergency fans up and running. There were a couple of events with CO. Thanked Al for helping find the root cause. We got CO monitors out. Al said we should have CO monitors scattered throughout the offices. Walkways need painted. Need help to get caught up. Looking at it. T here are concerns in SPM with fumes coming out of tubs. A couple of things have changed with fork drivers. There is a 45 minute to 60 minutes cooling time. There is no more dumping in collection hoppers. Have the employees been informed? Will follow-up.
