Toowoomba Qld

As Australia moves from the mining boom to the dining boom, the logistics industry must adapt in order to support Australia’s shifting areas of global competitive advantage. As an industry, we need to adequately service evolving demand for quality, fresh and safe agri food products. Australia’s world class primary producers, and food processors, must have access to world class cool chain and logistics infrastructure in order to remain globally competitive.

Australian Beef Exports to China

(AU$BN) ANZ bank forecast Australian beef

exports to China to grow from $1.4

billion annually to more than $100

billion annually by 2030.

NFF chief executive Simon Talbot,

predicts the value of Australian rural

exports could double from $40BN to

$80BN in the next 15 years.

Australian’s Competitive Advantage

Our international perception is clean and green China’s growing middle class want our produce Opportunity to move from being a bulk producer to a premium producer of high value low volume product This shift needs to be supported at a logistics level

International Airfreight - Australian Airports (Tonnes)

Australia’s International

Air Freight Task

Total international airfreight

at Australia’s airports nearly

quadrupled from 1985 to

2013.

Global GDP is expected to

double by 2030, globally this

is expected to cause air

freight to triple.

The Airfreight Challenge Most capital city airports are in the wrong place for export freight. Busy city area, traffic congestion, conflicts between passenger and freight movements. Existing airfreight infrastructure is at capacity. There is limited capacity for infrastructure development to support perishables and the expected increased airfreight A big part of the answer is:

• More airfreight infrastructure

• In the right place

• Rethink within the logistics industry

A Mini Case Study on

Darling Downs Produce

In some cases the freight spends more time on the road than it does in the air. Traffic conflicts between road traffic and airport access, then conflicts between airport passenger traffic and freight traffic It then almost fly's back over where it was originally shipped from.

What needs to happen in Southern

Qld/Northern NSW

If we had the infrastructure in the originators region it can look like this. Savings for the airline 2 hours fly time (hour each way) A B747 Freighter aircraft costs approximately $20k per hour Savings for the producers Savings for the consumers Shorter travel time and better cold chain security

There are also opportunities to

rethink import airfreight as well.

The same savings apply to the airlines. The cost of airfreighting that extra hour each way far out ways the cost of trucking it overnight Airfreight costs versus road freight costs. Airfreight Imports into Qld then delivered into Sydney 12 hours later .

Summary

We all know about the huge opportunities in Asia, but to truly grab

hold of them, we need to re-think how we do things.

Are our already capacity constrained airports in the right place?

We can no longer rely on Governments to provide the infrastructure

we need. Private enterprise needs to take the lead.

Look beyond what's always been done.
