Skits, Raps, And Poems For The School Counselor is designed for use withstudentsinGrades4-8.Butyoungerelementary-agestudentswithgoodreadingskillsmightdojustfine,andhighschoolstudentsusuallyenjoyactivities thatinvolveactingorrapping.Infact,kidsandadultsofallagesenjoyperforming!Researchhasshownthatthecreativeartssuchasdramaandmusiccanbeveryeffectivecounselingtools(Gladding,2004).Useyourownjudgmentas to theagesofstudentsforwhomtheseactivitiesareappropriate.

Althoughthisbookwaswrittenprimarilyforusebyschoolcounselorsinclassroomguidanceorsmallgroups,awidevarietyofeducatorswillfindituseful.Healthandscienceteacherswillenjoyworkingtheanti-tobacco/alcohol/drugsskit(TheAlienReport)intotheirlessonplanstoincreaseclassparticipation.Alltheskitsandrapsinthisbookcanbeaffectivelycombinedwitheveningpresentationskidsmaketotheirparents,forPTAmeetings,classroomthemenights,church/schoolactivities,andawidevarietyofotheractivities.Thepoemsreflectspecialtimesintheschoolcalendar.

a Word about The Use Of Raps With students …Rapisnotmyfavoritekindofmusic.IstillfeelmorecomfortablewatchingmyPinkFloydDVDthanturningonarapstation,althoughIdolikethewayalternativebandssuchastheRedHotChiliPeppersand311goinandoutofrapintheirsongs.MytwosonshaveexposedmetosomeverycreativehiphopartistssuchasK’NaanandGiantPanda.Bottomline,though:Rapisthemusicoftoday’syouth,andyoucangetakid’sattentionmuchmorequicklywitharap-orientedmusicactivitythanwithanyotherstyleofmusic.

In the school right down the street,there’s a test I have to take.

It’s important and it’s very long,and I hope I don’t make a mistake!

It’s an Evil Monster Test.Guess I’ll have to try my best.

Tell myself I’ll be OK,and I can make it through this day.

All of my friends must take it, too.And so with our pencils of number two,

we’ll fill in a bubble here and a bubble there,take a deep breath, and won’t get scared.

It’s an Evil Monster Test, and I am trying to do my best .

Telling myself it’ll be OK.I can make it through this test today.

In the end, the test was not too bad.I did well, so I’m not sad.But I’m glad, I get to rest

from that Evil, Monster Test.

It was an Evil Monster Test,on which I did my best.Now I know I’ll be OK

to face a test another day.
