HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Parents often fi nd them-selves waiting in long lines to snag the hottest toys for children’s holiday gifts. Shoppers arrive at retail stores in droves to grab the newest video game con-soles or must-have dolls or action fi gures.

From Cabbage Patch Dolls of the 1980s to the Elmo craze of the 1990s, every genera-tion seems to have its own “must-have” holiday gift. This year, holiday shoppers may want to start shopping early if they hope to land any of the following items that fi gure to be this year’s

hot toys.

• “Frozen”-themed toys: Mega-retailer Walmart pre-dicts that toys inspired by the smash hit fi lm “Frozen” will continue to be hot com-modities this holiday sea-son. To meet demand, the retailer already is stocking up on the popular char-acters and other products banking on the popularity of the fi lm. If the special girl in your life is still enamored with all things “Frozen,” it’s a smart bet to start your holi-day buying early this year.

• “Hunger Games” athletic items: Fans of the “Hunger

Games” trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss’ prowess with a bow and arrow. Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls and boys testing their ar-chery skills.

• Beats by Dr. Dre: Music-lov-ers still consider these head-phones must-have items. They’re especially prevalent among the teen market. Available in a variety of col-ors, users can coordinate their Beats headphones with their clothing or accessories.

• Lego Minecraft: It was only a matter of time before Lego got in on the action of one of the hottest games to sweep the Internet and video game console world. Minecraft is a digital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft en-thusiasts can recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego versions.

The holiday season is on the horizon, and it’s never too early to begin shopping for the toys and games experts predict will be this year’s must-have items.

GREAT GIFTS FOR MUSIC LOVERS

Finding the right gift come the holiday season is not al-ways so simple. Many peo-ple on your list may seem as though they already have everything they could ever want or need, making it hard to fi nd them a gift they will truly enjoy. A great way to fi nd the right gift is to think of a loved one’s hobbies and fi nd something that fosters those passions. Many people love music, and if there happens to be a budding musician or someone who simply loves

to rock on your list, then the following gifts may be music to their ears.• Concert tickets: The ulti-mate gift for many music fans is tickets to see their favorite performer in person. Concert tickets can sell out quickly, so research when tickets will be going on sale and be prepared to purchase them as early as possible. Some credit card companies sponsor concerts and make special arrangements with venues to off er cardholders advanced deals or special packages. Find out if your

credit card company has such an off er available for the concert you are buying tickets for.

• Digital gift card: Gone are the days when music fans vis-it a record store to purchase vinyl records, cassette tapes and even CDs. Many music fans now listen exclusively to digital music, so a gift card for digital downloads from Amazon or iTunes makes a great gift. A subscription to a music-streaming service also makes a great gift. • Theater tickets: Some peo-ple’s love of music stems from their love of live the-ater. Even if your loved one lives nowhere near the bright lights of Broadway, touring companies that perform popular Broadway shows visit cities both big and small across the coun-try. Tickets to such shows can stoke your loved one’s passion for music and make for a great night out on the town.• Music lessons: Perhaps your

loved one is a budding musi-cian who can benefi t from professional instruction? A great way to encourage their aspirations is to fi nance their lessons with local mu-sic or vocal instructors. Visit a nearby college or school for recommendations on lo-cal instructors. The franchise “School of Rock” has regional locations and off ers musical training as well.• Music store gift certifi cate: Musicians often need to re-pair or replace their instru-ments, so a gift card to a music store can make for a much-needed and appreci-ated gift. Repairs and new instruments can be expen-sive, so if you plan to go this route, put enough money on the card to make a signifi -cant dent at the register.• Gadgets: Each year the market seems to off er newer and better ways to listen to music, and these gadgets may be on your loved one’s wish list.

The holiday season gener-ates a lot of waste, and many things contribute to this ex-cess of trash this time of year.

• Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfi lls after the holi-day season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can recycle those bags at appropriate receptacles.

• Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recycling paper or looking for reusable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.

• Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to re-cycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of being sent to a landfi ll. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and planting it after the holidays.

• Nearly 2.65 billion Christ-mas cards are sold and ex-

changed each year in the United States alone. This many cards can fi ll a football fi eld 10 stories high. One less card sent per person can save roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are another way to save paper.

• If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it

would save enough paper to

cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

It’s this Moment

Comes a time on Christmas Eve

When all the gifts are bought

And wrapped and tied with shiny

Bows and placed beneath the tree.

Shops are closed,

Locked up tight.

Even merchants hurry home

On this enchanted night.

A glass of wine perhaps a kiss

Beneath the mistletoe.

Evening fades as night begins

And children dream of gifts.

Late that night stillness comes

Magic spills over the land

As every creature of the earth

Feels the promise of The Son.

Humblest home and greatest hall

Are wrapped in a mother’s love.

It’s this moment I hold most dear

When peace fills the hearts of all.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Calling all couch potatoes!!! This chunky monkey is ready to plop down beside you. Bailey loves to be scratched and prefers to be right near you all the time, normally on the sofa, where he likes to sleep half-on/half-off your lap (at 17 pounds he’s almost too big to fit all the way). When really happy he will roll around on the floor and “rough-house”— occasionally giving little love-nips if you get him too excited. When scared Bailey will vocalize with

Hershey is a female Pointer/pit mix who is 4-5 yrs old and weighs around 40 lbs. She is a a wonderful dog - she is

currently living with 6 cats and 2 children under 5 yrs old. Hershey has lived with dogs and is good with them. She is

snuggling right up next to you and you will wake up having her stare at you until you get up and give her a treat. Gabby gets along with other
