St. Brigid’s Parish, Killester NEWSLETTER November 2010 Dear Friends As you are aware a group of Parishioners from St. Brigid’s set out on Pilgrimage to the Holy Land on the 5 th of October last. Some parishioners from St. Columba’s, Iona Road joined us along with a small number from Meath and Wexford. In all, thirty eight formed the group that left first for Frankfurt and then on to Tel Aviv. On arri- val there we were taken by coach to Tiberias, a town on the Sea of Galilee. Within hours we were in a boat out on the Lake basking in the calm and soaking up the sunshine and the beautiful scenery. Locations around the Lake such as Capernaum, the Mount of the Beatitudes and Tabgha were visited – places traditionally associated with the ministry and life of Jesus and the Apostles. On our second day we journeyed to Nazareth, some thirty five miles away and celebrated Mass in a church traditionally associated with St. Joseph’s workshop, before moving on to Mount Tabor – the scene of the Transfiguration. The following day we renewed our Baptismal vows in the River Jordan before heading south as did Jesus when he went ‘up to Jerusa- lem’. Memorable occasions flowed one after the other: Mass in the Garden of Gethsemane one afternoon at 3 p.m., and later on another night we returned there for a Holy Hour at the Rock of Agony. No one else was present and we were able to enter the darkened Garden alone. It was both prayerful and very moving. As is customary, we carried a large cross along the Via Dolorosa or Way of the Cross before entering the Basilica which enshrines the Hill of Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre. We also had Mass in the Crusaders Church attached to the Basilica. Later, we went to the Wailing Wall on the Western side of the site of the destroyed Temple of Jerusalem. A very sobering journey took us seven miles south to Bethlehem where we passed through very stringent and secure barriers into Palestinian territory. There we saw the Wall some 20 metres high and now sadly 450 kms. long which separates Israel from Palestine. It is seen as a security wall by the Israelis, but in fact it imprisons and hinders the Palestinians hugely. It is an evil structure and will have to come down some day. A highlight of our stay in Jerusalem was a visit from Archbishop Paul Sayah, the Maronite Exarch for the territories of the Holy Land and Jordan, who spent over an hour with us explaining the complexities of the religious and political situations in the Middle East. Paul had learned his English in Dublin when a student in Clonliffe Col- lege. Our two guides Abraham, a Jew, in Israel, and Nadal, a Christian, in Palestine were superb. I have worked with Abe on at least four occasions and he is an absolute fount of information and clarity on the Old Testament and on some aspects of the New. In Bethlehem, Nadal brought us to the Basilica of the Nativity – the place of Christ’s Birth. This was after we had celebrated a lovely Mass out in the Shepherd’s field, some 3 kms. away. Our Pilgrimage concluded with a day in the rocky Judean wilderness when we descended from the heights of Jerusalem way below sea level to the Dead Sea and there floated to our hearts content in the buoyant blue wa- ter. We then travelled a short distance to the ruins of Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found by a Bed- ouin boy in 1947. The Essenes, a monastic group of ascetics, had lived there for some 200 years before Christ and it is mooted that John the Baptist may have been a member for a short period. In our eight days having covered so much ground and shared so many experiences, those who were initially strangers to each other soon became good friends. There was a lovely mix of laughter and prayer and moments that were deeply moving. Our Pilgrimage proved to be a truly blessed journey and we remembered all of you in our prayers while away, and thank you for your prayers and concern for us. Fr. Alex (Above) Fr. Brian, Fr. Alex and Archbishop Paul Sayah. (Left) Our group at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.

Some parishioners from St. Columba’s, Iona Road joined us along with a small number from Meath and Wexford. Altar List of the Dead

A Memorial Mass for all those who died during the past year will be celebrated on Sunday 7th November at 12 noon. During the month of November we are continually reminded of our deceased family members and friends: by old photographs, mortuary cards, by the places we have visited with them and so on. Their memory is never far from us. That is why we are celebrating this special Memorial Mass so that we can remember and pray for them all, and ensure that nobody is forgotten. In the past twelve months 45 parishioners have died. Other pa-rishioners have lost someone close to them . We miss them all. The void they have left in our lives is never filled and we are in need of consolation, love and healing – so please remember them during this Mass.

Indulgences for the Holy Souls From 12 O’Clock noon on November 1st until midnight on November 2nd, all who have confessed, received Holy Communion, and prayed for the Pope’s intentions (one Our Father and Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one’s choice) can gain one plenary indulgence by visiting a church or oratory, and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls of the departed. Confession may be made at any time within the week preceding or the week following November 1st. Holy Communion may be received on any day from 1st to 8th November. St. Brigid’s Church will remain open with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on 2nd November until 3 p.m. to facilitate people to pray for the Holy Souls.

The faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may also gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the Holy Souls on the usual conditions once per day from 1st – 8th November. The conditions mentioned above apply also for this.

As members of Christ’s body we are united to the Holy Souls. Because of this communion, we can help them “get ready” for seeing God “face to face”. How? - by our Masses, prayers, almsgiving, good deeds and also by other indulgenced actions. These indulgenced actions cancel out the negative consequences which sins cause us and others. Even after Confession, and our sins have been forgiven, the damage or disorder sinful actions have caused can remain. Indulgenced actions for the Holy Souls help repair that disorder. By our good actions, we are able to assist the Holy Souls to receive all the love that the Lord has prepared for them.

“Do This In Memory” programme for First Communicants

The inaugural meeting of the parents/guardians of children making their First Holy Communion in May 2011 was held in the Resource Centre on Monday 20th of September. Over 100 parents attended and of these some 50 volunteered to assist in planning the monthly Masses. We are most grateful for their generous co-operation. On Thursday 7th October, Group 1 of parents met and planned the Enrolment Mass for 17th October and this was very successful thanks to their efforts. Group 2 met on Wednesday 20th October to prepare for our Mass on Sunday October 31st. To facilitate future planning, it might be helpful to indicate the members of the seven groups as follows: Group 1: Alanna Broughan, Sinead Byrd, Martina Smith, Noeleen Black, Noreen Harrison, Maeve Shields, Pauline Corr. St. Brigid's Parish Shop, Killester There is now in stock a large selection of Christmas cards from the Divine Word Missionaries together with a special card depicting St. Brigid's Church and its history. Also in stock are many other items that would make lovely Christmas gifts and include miniature nativity sets, resin nativity globes, cribs, Christmas candles, medals, holy pictures, angel pins, crucifixes, holy water fonts, rosary beads and lots more. We also have “Down Through The Ages” a history of St Brigid’s Church and Parish from 1926 to 2006 which would make a lovely read over the Christmas period, together with a new CD from Bryan Hoey called ‘‘Just for To-day and Always’’ and includes Una Furtiva Lagrima, M’appari and Caro Mio Ben to name but a few. So why not call into the shop which is located at the side of the Church (car park side) and see the array of goods available. It may save you an unnecessary trip into town. Volunteers’ Night: The Volunteers turned out in force, and had a great night in the Centre on the 16th October. The Music was supplied by Jim Whelan and friends - what a show they put on! Vivienne supplied the food and it was up to Vivienne’s superb standard. It was a great success. The Volunteers made the night one to remember and enjoyed themselves .

The Art and Craft Fair: This takes place on 6th and 7th November in the Conference Hall. The tables were taken up very quickly, as always and it promises to be a very good Fair. There is a wide variety of crafts, and the Coffee Dock will be open all day both days. So come along meet your friends and get the Christmas shopping all done at the one venue.
