21st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 22\23 August 2015 Year B LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? YOU HAVE THE MESSAGE OF ETERNAL LIFE Repetition is a genre used by scripture writers to stress a climax or a main point. Over the past few weeks we have obviously noticed it in our gospel readings in what is referred to as the “bread of life” discourse in John’s gospel. We have seen Jesus repeating to his followers that He is the bread of life who has come into the world so that all may be saved and have eternal life. This has been repeated to us so that we do not take for granted what we have. Jesus makes it clear that the path to a real, fulfilled and holy life passes through Him. That remaining in him (communion with Him) is the basic nourishment we need for life. This reassurance goes a long way to explain the incarnation for us, the very reason why Christ came into the world. This is the beauty of what we have in the Eucharist which is the ‘real’ presence of Christ in the Church. The Eucharist is a ‘life-giving’ sacrament. It is a transforming sacrament in that whenever we partake of it, we receive new life from God. It is a ‘pass-over’ meal that helps us to ‘pass-over’ from our former ways of life into the new life that God gives us. We are very lucky to have this. But this can only be possible if we cooperate with this grace that has been given to us. We can only receive this life if we approach the altar with a clear conscience, giving room for this grace of God to transform our lives. This is why we should always look forward to partaking of this life-giving meal. If this meal doesn’t transform us, if we walk out of this meal same as we came, then we need to check what we are not doing right. The ball is on our court! This shows that we need to always prepare ourselves properly before coming (maybe through the sacrament of reconciliation if we need to). We need to always tell ourselves that we are coming to the Eucharist to encounter Christ himself who is present in the minister, in His word, in the gathered assembly and most especially under the Eucharistic species. There is that tendency to get so familiar with it that we do not appreciate what the Eucharist does for us. The Eucharist should motivate and guide all we do. My dear friends, just like Joshua in our first reading this weekend and Peter in our gospel, we have nowhere else to go except following the Lord who offers us eternal life, not just temporary life. It may not come easily sometimes. Let us not be distracted by anything but know that we have the real deal. All we need to do is to cooperate with this grace by opening our hearts and letting God transform our lives. I would like to use this medium to thank you all for your prayers while I was away. I had a great holiday with family. They send their greetings to you all. LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? YOU HAVE THE MESSAGE OF ETERNAL LIFE

Repetition is a genre used by scripture writers to stress a climax or a main point.

Blessings, Fr Chukwudi ———————————————————————————— This Week’s Readings: Joshua 24: 1-2, 15-18; Eph 5: 21-32; Jn 6: 60-69

IF YOU ARE A READER OF THE WORD PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING NOTICE: As a follow-up to the Liturgy workshops facilitated by Evangelisation Brisbane we invite all Readers of the Word to attend a workshop. There will be two opportunities to attend the workshop – Thursday 27

th August 6.30pm to 8.30pm and Saturday 29

th August 10.00am to 12.00

Both sessions will be held in St Mary’s Church. If you are a reader your attendance is important as there will be some slight changes introduced that need to be communicated. It is also a good opportunity to enquire about aspects of being a Minister of the Word. We would also like to encourage new readers to participate in this ministry and to come along to one of the sessions. It would be helpful if you could phone the parish office on 3281 2133 to let us know that you will be attending.

ALTAR SERVERS: If you have a young person who has celebrated their Holy Communion and would like to participate a little more in our weekly Mass, then please encourage them to come forward and be part of the Altar Servers’ ministry. Contact Bernadette McAndrew at the Parish office to leave your name as a training date for this ministry will be offered in the near future.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD: If you would like to find out more about this religious formation for young children we invite you to contact Bernadette McAndrew at the Parish office. We are seeking expressions of interest from adults who enjoy breaking open the Word of God with young children and who would be interested in assisting other catechists who volunteer their time to work with the children in this ministry. We are hoping to offer more sessions to children who are in the young age bracket of 3 to 6 years. Full training will be offered and the only requirements you need is a love of children and respect for their awe and wonder of the things of God, as well as the government requirement of holding a Blue Card that allows you to work with children. This can be arranged by the Parish office. Interested? Then please contact Bernadette at the Parish Office.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD: There is a slight change to the dates for Children’s Liturgy. We will now offer children’s Liturgy of the Word on the 2

nd Sunday morning of the month at the 8am Mass, as well as the 2

nd Saturday of the

month at the evening Mass at 6pm. There will be no Children’s Liturgy on the 3rd

Sunday morning at the 8am Mass only at the 6pm Sunday Mass.
