Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016

Reading I : Isaiah 7:10-14 She shall name him Immanuel.

Isaiah’s message to Ahaz is to watch for signs of God’s work.

The sign Isaiah describes, that a virgin shall be with child is used in the Gospel of Matthew to show Mary’s

virginal conception of Jesus as a fulfillment of this text.

The name of the child, Emmanuel means “God with us.”

Reading II : Romans 1:1-7 In him we have been given the gift of being apostles.

In the introduction to the Letter to the Romans, Paul reflects on the identity of Jesus.

Jesus is a son of David “according to the flesh”—thus he is the Christ, the Messiah.

Jesus is also the Son of God. Through his Resurrection, he has acquired the title Lord.

Gospel : Matthew 1:18-24 God is with us.

Matthew gives a genealogy for Jesus that assures us that Jesus is a son of David, because his legal father, Joseph, is

of the house of David.

In today’s Gospel, Joseph is also instructed to trust.

The name Jesus is related to the Hebrew word “savior.”

Theme: Jesus is God made flesh. (Emmanuel = God is with us!)

Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel

Step One: Listen to the Word What one word or thought in this reading really strikes you? What overall sense of the Christian life do you get

from this reading?

Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: When you pray, how do you hear God’s voice in response?

Question for Youth: God speaks to us in our intuitions and imagination, as he did to Joseph in this dream. What is

your experience of hearing God speak in this way? What is God asking of you?

Question for Adults: What experiences do you have of God “speaking to you” and directing your life and work?

How does God speak to you in prayer?

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

A Christian tradition for this time of year is the Jesse Tree. Find a bare branch from a tree and put the branch in a

planter using sand to help it stand up. Listed below are the names of members of Jesus’ family tree, along with a

Scripture reading for each. As a family, read the Scripture and make symbols using construction paper and markers

to represent these prominent characters. Hang the symbols on the branch.

Adam and Eve — Genesis 3:1-24

Abraham and Sarah — Genesis 12:1-13:18

Moses — Exodus 20:1-21

David — 1 Samuel 16:1-16

Mary — Luke 1:26-38

Joseph — Matthew 1:18-25

Jesus — Luke 2:1-20

Take time to read together the Christmas story from Scripture or a children’s Bible. After the story, set out the

family nativity, or draw a picture of the nativity scene. Discuss each character as you draw them or place them in

the scene.

Purchase material and supplies for a Christmas banner. As a family create a banner showing the true meaning of

Christmas. When completed, hang the banner in a special place as a reminder during this busy week that the

Messiah is truly among us.

Go for an evening drive as a family and look at the Christmas lights in your community. Ask each family member

to reflect on a time when he or she has known the light of God’s presence in his or her life.

Meditation: Isaiah 35:1-6, 10 They will see the glory of the Lord. (Isaiah 35:2)

Do you want to see “the glory of the Lord” this Advent? Of

course you do! One of the ways to find this “glory” is by

activating our spiritual instincts. We were all born with these

instincts, and it’s something that the Holy Spirit wants to bring

to life in us every day. While we have many instincts, let’s focus

on just two of them.

First, we all have aesthetic instincts. Aesthetic instincts help

us appreciate a beautiful work of art or the majesty of a

snowcapped mountain peak. During Advent, we can ask the

Spirit to help us see the beauty in that dank and unwelcoming

manger. Picture the manger scene, and see what happens as you

dwell on the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Second, we have contemplative instincts—instincts that come

alive when we focus on a work of God. Do you remember how

Mary pondered and treasured everything that happened when

Jesus was born (Luke 2:19, 51)? When we ponder God’s word,

perhaps in the Christmas stories in Matthew or Luke’s Gospels,

our spiritual instincts will come alive, and the Holy Spirit will

give us new insights into his love for us.

When you receive the Eucharist today, imagine yourself at

the manger. Then pray, “Lord, show me your glory.” If you feel

a sense of happiness or a desire to bow down and thank God or

an impulse to reach out to someone who is hurting, take this as a

sign that the Holy Spirit is enlivening your spiritual instincts.

As these instincts come to life, they will influence the way

you think and act. You’ll find yourself becoming more loving,

more forgiving, and more peaceful—especially in difficult

times. God wants all his people to look to him and have their

instincts awakened. And that includes you!

“Holy Spirit, come and bring my spiritual instincts to life.

Lord, I want to see your glory!”
