Peripheral Nervous System

Nervous System

The nervous system is divided into two different parts: Central Nervous System (CNS) & the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord, and the PNS is all other nerve tissue.

The PNS carries information between the CNS and the other organs.

Peripheral Nervous System

The human PNS includes: 31 pairs of Spinal Nerves

12 pairs of Cranial Nerves

Cells in the PNS are both: Sensory Neurons: Coordinate functions of internal organs and

provide the CNS with sensory information.

Motor Neurons: Enable an organism to respond to its environment by stimulating muscle contraction and the activities of glands.

Subsystems of the PNS

The two major divisions of the PNS are: Sensory Division

Motor Division

Motor Division Subsystems: Automatic Nervous System (ANS): Regulates involuntary

reactions.

Somatic Motor Division: Responsible for skeletal muscle contraction.

Sensory Division Subdivisions: Visceral (Internal Organs) Sensory Division: Carries signals

mainly from the viscera of the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

Somatic Sensory Division: Carries signals from receptors in the skin, muscles, bones and joints.

Automatic Nervous System

Automatic Nervous System:

Sympathetic Division

Parasympathetic Division

The Sympathetic Division prepares an animal for quick reactions.

The Parasympathetic Division reduces readiness for action.
