Willamalane Park and Recreation District maintains and operates fi ve recreation facilities and 44 parks and natural areas totaling nearly 1,500 acres. Highlights include 13 waterfront areas, 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, 15 sports fi elds and 25 playgrounds. Created by voters in 1944, Willamalane is a special tax district, separate from the city of Springfi eld, with its own boundaries. It is governed by a fi ve-member, elected board of directors and managed by a district superintendent.

The beauty of nature abounds in Willamalane parks and natural areas. Now you can see nature interpreted by some of the great masters of the art world in a special day trip to the Portland Art Museum on Nov. 4. Page 72

We have had a dry but beautiful summer, and I hope you were able to take advantage of the weather to enjoy our wonderful parks, trails and natural areas. We are certainly blessed to have these outdoor recreation opportunities right out our backdoors. As the weath-er cools and (hopefully) the fall rains begin, remember that these wonderful places are still there for your enjoy-ment. Just put on a rain jacket and enjoy the fresh air.

I was so proud to have Willamalane host the 2015 Relay for Life at Willa-malane Center on July 24-25. With 6,000 participants all working toward raising funds for cancer research and supporting cancer patients. Willamalane Center was abuzz with laughter, music, great conversations and a sense of hope for a full 24 hours. Thank you, American Cancer Society, for bringing the relay to Springfield.

Please take a few moments to check out this recreation guide. It is full of great opportunities to learn, socialize, reduce stress, reach fitness goals and, most importantly, to play. It is through play that we make wonderful mem-ories, create balance in our lives and improve our health.

Dont underestimate the value of a good laugh, the joy of accomplishing a goal or the friendships made while we play. These experiences stir up the one ingredient we all really deserve in our lives: happiness.

On a Path to Adventure: Willamalane Hiking Club

Hiking is a great way to breathe fresh air, experience Oregons beauty and get a workout in all while enjoying the company of others. The new Willamalane Hiking Club opens up the great outdoors to those

with an appetite for adventure. The volunteer-led club ventures to

scenic hot spots every two weeks. Ex-cursions fall in the moderate category not leisure walks, but not extremely difficult, either. People of most ability levels are able to take part.

The group aims to go on adventures on the second and fourth Sundays of every

month. Each month, they plan one hike within Lane County and one hike within a three-hour drive of Springfield.

So far, Willamalane Hiking Club has visited Mount Pisgah, Spencer Butte and Tamolitch Pool (also known as Blue Pool). Their Facebook group is over 400 members strong and growing every day.

This fall, the club plans to venture to Silver Falls and Smith Rock, along with return visits to Mount Pisgah and Spencer Butte.

Want to join in? Visit willamalane.org, or find the Willamalane Hik-ing Club group on Facebook for information on future dates.

  • Following its mission of promoting a healthy and inviting environment, Willamalane Park and Recreation District will implement an ex-panded tobacco and smoke-free policy, effective Oct. 1. The policy was approved at the July 8 meet-ing of the Board of Directors.

Willamalane joins 18 other park districts and departments in Oregon to implement nonsmok-ing or tobacco-free policies.

Superintendent Bob Keefer commended board members for their proactive stance and leader-ship in making the communitys parks a healthier and more inviting place to recreate and relax.

This action heightens the positive experience of being outdoors, breathing fresh air and enjoying every aspect and every acre of our park system, said Keefer. He also noted that the policy benefits children, who are most susceptible to sec-ondhand smoke and model the behavior of others.

The new tobacco policy is also expected to reduce the problem of cigarette butts littering the landscape. Studies show that butts, one of the most common forms of litter, take five to 10 years to fully decompose, while leaching toxins into the environment and waterways.

While the previous policy prohibited smoking in buildings and facilities, and within 50 feet of playgrounds and picnic areas, the new policy cov-ers the entire district. It also prohibits all tobacco products and electronic smoking devices.

According to a study conducted last year by Lane County Health and Human Services, the majority of those polled welcome restrictions on the use of tobacco outdoors, with 74 percent saying it was important to very important to be protected from secondhand smoke in outside public settings.

From sports and tumbling classes to after-school activities and camps, kids can find lots of fun in Willa-malane programs.

Most youths want to join their peers and be a part of a group. Willamalanes in-clusion services ensure that children with disabilities can get the accommodations they need to participate in all the programs that interest them.

Its a way we make our programs accessible to the community, said Tracy Kribs, adaptive and inclusive recreation supervisor.

For Sam Lockard, who turned 8 over the summer, it means he gets to go to sum-mer camp for the first time, and maintain the social skills and physical strength he built throughout the school year when he was a part of a mainstream classroom.

Sam sometimes needs to use a wheelchair and has some speech difficulties and some social cue and memory challenges, the after-effects of treatment for brain cancer, said his mom, Jen Clayson. Sam was diagnosed with cancer at age 4, and is in remission now.

He needs an aide to help him physically and in social situations, and Willamalane provided that for his six weeks at Camp Kaboom, where he has taken field trips, gone swimming with new friends and made crafts.

He loves it, Clayson said. This is something he would not have been able to do without inclusion services.

Inclusion is a require-ment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which prohibits discrimi-nation and ensures equal opportunity for people with disabilities.

Willamalane offers adap-tive and inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all ages. The adaptive recreation program provides particular opportunities for people with disabilities who are 16 and older.

    In addition, all children

and adults with disabilities can request inclusion and the modifications needed to make any Willamalane programs accessible to them. Most of the requests are made by parents on behalf of their school-age children, Kribs said.

It benefits everyone, Kribs said. People requesting inclusion have the opportu-nity to be involved in a broad array of programs. People with or without disabilities have an opportunity to interact with each other and share a positive experience.

Inclusion isnt really a program at all, Kribs said, its an attitude. Through

inclusion, participants can recognize that everyone has strengths and talents, re-gardless of ability, Kribs said.

The process is simple.Parents who would like

to enroll a child who has disabilities in one of Willa-malanes classes, camps or after-school programs can complete an Inclusion Ser-vice Request and return the form at least two weeks prior to the requested service.

Willamalane staff contact the parents or guardians of the participant for a review and assessment, and then they create an inclusion plan. This could mean ensuring wheelchair accessi-bility, providing materials in Braille, or providing one-to-one staff help.

The program has done assessments and intakes for 33 children in the past year, Kribs said.

When you make all the kids activities in the entire recreation guide possible for all children, youre giving people with disabil-ities a sense of choice and freedom, Kribs said.

She has volunteered for summer camp, Kids Club, No-school Days, as well as countless special events. When not volunteering, Amy spends her time with her family, going to school, drawing, singing, dancing or collecting Asian artwork. This fall, Amy will begin the Family and Human Services program at the University of Oregon. Amys passion for life and creativity are evident in everything she does.

Theresa Huang is a recent graduate of the University of Oregon who volunteered with Park Services during the spring of 2015. She quickly found her place among the staff and other volunteers. GIS was her main focus, though she helped out with volunteer outreach as well. Theresa methodically collected data, took many 360-degree photos of our parks, and trained our other GIS volunteers. Whatever the task, Theresa was willing to take it on with a smile. We hope to see her this fall when she returns from visiting family in Taiwan.

Voter-approved bond funds will be help-ing to dramatically expand Willamalanes family of trails in the com-ing months.

In late 2016 we expect to celebrate the opening of Mill Race Path. This 3-mile walking and bicycling path, a partnership with the city of Springfield, will meander along the histor-ic Springfield Mill Race stretching from downtown

to the Middle Fork Path. The two paths together will form an 8-mile loop of peaceful scenery begin-ning and ending down-town.

Mill Race Path will have two trailheads.

The main trailhead will be situated at the eastern terminus of South B Street and will include parking, bike racks, restrooms and a plaza with a scenic overlook.

The second trailhead will be located at 32nd Street and Jasper Road.

Willamalane is using funds from the 2012 bond measure to pay for the trailheads and path.

The millrace was origi-nally hand-dug by Spring-field founder Elias Briggs in the 1850s. More than 150 years later, residents of Briggs thriving city will get to enjoy the area he found so promising.

Willamalane Park and Recreation District actively promotes inclusive practices in order to meet the needs of the children, families and staff in our programs. Everyone is welcome to attend Willamalane programs regardless of ability, back-ground, culture, religion, gender or economic circumstanc-es. Through inclusive practice, we aim to reflect our wider community and promote positive attitudes to the similarities and differences in each other. In adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act, we strive to offer reasonable accom-modations to enable people with disabilities to become fully included in our programs.

Inclusion proceduresPlease complete an Inclusion Service Request form available online at willamalane.org or at Willamalane Center. Return the form to the Adaptive and Inclusion Recreation supervi-sor by fax: 541-736-4529, or by email: [email protected], or mail to 250 S. 32nd St. Springfield, OR 97478. The Inclusion Service Request form must be received at

least two weeks prior to the start of service. The Adaptive Recreation supervisor will conduct a review

and initial assessment by contacting the parents or guardians of the participant prior to the beginning of the program. The coordinator will then create an inclusion plan for the program staff. Willamalane reserves the right to deny a request if program modifications are not support-ed by the data in the assessment or documentation; the participant does not meet the essential eligibility criteria of the program; or the request does not fall under the require-ments of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Willamalane staff members do not provide personal care (feeding, dressing or toileting). It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian/caregiver or individual to arrange for that level of care.

People may request the following services: An inclusion assessment to identify how best to support a patrons ability to participate in our programs. Large print copies of Willamalane publications are avail-

able within two days notice. Audiotape of sections of this guide are available within

three days advance notice. Patrons may also ask that sec-tions of this guide be read to them.

Sign language interpretation is available with three days advance notice. Please request this service at the time you register.

Other accommodations may be requested with advance notice.

Please contact Willamalane ADA coordinator Beth Sutton at 541-736-4403 or [email protected] for information on accommodations.

    Preschools Expand to Meet Demand

Two new full-day preschool programs have joined Willamalanes lineup of quality care led by trained early childhood professionals.

With the shift to full-day kindergarten, preschool is even more important in getting kids ready for school, says Jillian Hoy, Willamalane preschool supervisor.

The Happy Hummingbirds and Singing Sparrows classes are geared to kids ages 3-4 and 4-5, respec-tively, creating a smooth path from preschool to school readiness.

We focus on academic and social skills that have been shown to prepare students for success in school, college and career, Hoy says.

Willamalane staff members receive ongoing training in child development, programming, behavior manage-ment and health and safety. All staff members are CPR and fi rst-aid certifi ed. In addition, programs at Willa-malane Center are endorsed as Eco-Healthy child care providers.
