    Aroundthe housePUTTING ON THE STYLE

GONE are the days whena feature wall painted ina bright colour wasconsidered the ultimatein interior design.

Unless youve been living in acave, youll have noticed thatwallpaper has been staging something of a comeback.

Digitally printed or handembroidered, retro or luxuriouslyglam, the stylish options for yourwalls are infinite.

According to Kate Kingston, managing director of interiordesign company Kingston Shaw, wallpaper is key to transforming ahouse into a stylish home.

Kingston, who has been designing interiors for private and corporateclients in London, Los Angeles andMilan for more than 20 years, sayswallpaper gives homeowners achance to express their personalityand individuality.

She said: Thats why it excitesdesigners. Wallpaper is an excellentway to inject colour, texture andimpact onto a blank canvas.

Melanie Adams, wallcoveringsexpert at Wallpaperdirect, sayshomeowners are becoming moreadventurous about how they usewallpaper and are prepared toexperiment in certain rooms, including bathrooms.

Its weasy to work out ways withwalls to suit your home with advicefrom the experts.

    PERSONAL PRINT

There are plenty of amazing papersavailable, but new technologymeans you can create a special

design just for your home.Kate Kingston says advances indigital printing mean designersand manufacturers work withhomeowners to create stunning,one-off wall art.

She said: We have found thatbespoke wall coverings arebecoming increasingly desirable toour clients. They appreciate theexclusivity that a unique designdelivers.

Kingston Shaw recently created abachelor pad in a penthouseapartment in Liverpoolsprestigious One Park Westdevelopment, using bespoke wall

coverings. The companysdesigners collaborated withDigetex, using its digital printing process to make a custom-fittedalluring eyes image that matchedthe dimensions of the wall to themillimetre.

They hung a mirrored wallpaperdesign from Osborne & Little onthe ceiling as a contemporary nodto the bachelor pads of the 1970s,then created a digitally printeddartboard wall covering, toppedwith a competition dartboard.

Digetex has a range of imaginative wallcovers including its Dickens Bookcase wallpapermural that mimics shelves full of books and starts from 129.

Other wallpapers start fromaround 20 and bespoke digitalprints from 180.

Top tip: Digital printing meansyou can blow up a personal imagethat you love even one from yourlife and hang it on your wall.

Kingston said: If its your ownpersonal photo Id advise having itenlarged first and pinning it on thewall to decide if it's really suitableto be seen day after day.

    TOUCHY FEELY

Dramatic wall treatments may notbe to everyones taste but thatdoesnt mean there isnt awallpaper out there to suit yourhome.

If youre nervous by the thoughtof covering your walls in bolddesigns, Kingston suggests going for texture rather than pattern.

She said: To avoid thatoppressive feeling of a busypatterned paper on all four walls, create a focal point by choosing afeature wall and painting theothers in sympathetic neutrals.

Using a textured wallpaper willadd interest to a wall, withoutallowing the design to dominate.

There arent any rules aboutwhere to hang your chosenwallpaper.

Kingston said: Get creative.Wallpaper can be hung on theceiling or pasted on panels.

Or you could try it in strips orgeometric shapes on top of neutralpainted walls to add warmth anddepth.

House Couturier has a stunning range of papers including a QuilterLacquer wallcovering, from 98 alinear metre, and its Glam Grassmetallic paper woven wallcovering, handcrafted in Japan, which has ashimmering effect, starts at 74 alinear metre.Top tip: Wallpaper hanging methods have changed. These daysyou usually paste the wall, not thepaper.

But Kingston says its importantto always line walls before hanging your chosen wallpaper to ensure asmooth, professional finish.

    FULL-ON FLORALS

Flower prints and patterns nevergo out of fashion but interpretationof natures blooms is ongoing, andensures there's always a fresh lookto pick from.

Paula Taylor, colour specialist atGraham & Brown, said: Floraldesigns have come straight off thecatwalk this spring. There is a hottrend for smaller floral designs.

Larger floral prints are mixedand matched with smallerbotanicals to create a co-ordinatedlook.

Colour combinations are boldand striking with multi-colouredflower heads and big traditionalbouquets hand-painted with

watercolours and bold blockcolours for an eclectic twist.

Pretty blooms feature on thecompanys Lacework and PassionLily papers, 30 a roll, and itsSuperfresco collection, from 20 aroll, also has attractive prints.

Little Greenes Fifties Line Paperscollection, from 38 a roll, featuresbeautiful floral designs and, unusually, others inspired byherbs. Papers 44.50 a roll.Top tip: Great floral colourcombinations include purple andfresh greens, midnight blues withteals, reds with greys, and yellowswith fresh greens and taupes.

    TRACK A TREND

Wallpaper and wall art trends oftenfollow catwalk fashion, butnowadays leading design brandsare even expanding their ranges toinclude wall coverings.

Kingston said: Its a sure sign of the growth, popularity and staying power of wallpaper that luxurybrands are also entering the wallcovering market.

French brand Hermes, famous forits silk scarves, launched a smallselection of wall coverings inMarch, starting from about 120 aroll.

Swarovski has just unveiled itsopulent wallpaper range, which has

the appearance of antique giglass with each rectangular pfixed with a cluster of crystrocks. It costs 560 a roll.Top tip: A glamorous, Fiftinspired style will dominate year, predicts Lizzie Deshayedesign director at wallpapercompany Fromental, whose are hand-painted and hand-embroidered by artists in Loand China.

    She said: Were forecastin

the key trends will be prints on naturals such as woods, sand water and therell be a lbold black and white prints.

How to save moneyHOUSING minister GrantShapps has urged key industryplayers to work closely togetherto tackle the first-time buyercrisis.

Persimmon Homes has beenquick to respond by linking upwith financial expert and

founder of moneymagpie.comJasmine Birtles. She has put together the

following sound advice foranyone who is, or would like tostart, saving for a mortgagedeposit.

Set your goal. One of the bestways of getting yourself to saveregularly is to set a financialgoal then work back from there. So, for example, if you want tosave 5,000 over two years thatmeans that you have to putaway about 208 a month for thenext two years.

Once you break it down intomonths it makes it easier to aimfor.

Do a budget. It soundsobvious but most people dontwork out how much money theyhave to spend on bills so thatthey can know how much extramoney they have to play witheach month. Use an onlinecalculator like my one atmoneymagpie.com/budget andput in your monthly incomingstogether with your monthlyessential expenditure. That wayyou will have an idea of howmuch spending money you haveeach month and how much of that you could potentially save.

Pay yourself first. Once youknow how much you couldafford to save each month, setup a standing order to go out

from your bank account on thenext day to a special savingsaccount youve set up for yourdeposit. In other words, payyourself before you give moneyto shops, restaurants, clubs, tour operators etc. You will besurprised at how quickly youget used to living on less moneyeach month.

Make some extra cash.Turbo-charge your savings bymaking a bit on the side whereyou can. Use your time, yourskills, your hobbies and yourspace to make money. Forexample, you could do bar workone evening a week or do somebabysitting or dog-walking.

If youre good at making cakes, jewellery, handbags oranything else saleable thenmake extra and sell them at alocal market. If youre good at aparticular subject, language ormusical instrument then have ago at tutoring. If you have timefree during the week get intobeing a film extra.

Save on bills . Cut down yourmonthly spend by switching allyour essential bills where you

can. Go on a few comparisonsites its best to try at least twoto compare their offers - and seewhich companies have thecheapest electricity, gas, mobile, landline, insurance and so on.You should be able to savearound 1,000 over the year if

you havent switched for a yearor more.Go down a brand. Food prices

are going up but you can cutyour weekly shopping bill bygoing down a brand wherepossible. Beat the supermarketsat their own game. Look at thelower and upper shelves whenyoure shopping because thatswhere the cheaper brands areplaced. Shop at street marketswhere you can because theirprices are generally 20-30 percent cheaper than the shops.

Use up leftovers. There aresome great recipes atlovefoodhatewaste.com andpick up marked-down food atthe supermarket and freeze itfor later.

Switch to free entertainment.Get rid of expensive satellitepackages and switch toFreeview which offers a lot of entertainment for nothing.

Get free dinners, hotel staysand drinks in bars by doing becoming a mystery shopper(join agencies such asperformanceinpeople.co.uk orretailactive.com) and get freetickets to local concerts, playsand shows throughmyboxoffice.net.

Dont forget you can also be inTV and radio audiences for freethrough the BBC ticket unit atbbc.co.uk/tickets.
