he Groutvi l le Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Tstaged protests on the

mornings of Thursday and Friday at their headquarters last week with regards to long standing water issues.

According to the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) liaison officer, Claude Naiker, the union addressed the issue of shortage of water in June 2015 with the Department of Transport KwaZulu-Natal.

The department then took steps to send out the installation and repairs of the water tanks to tender.

“In the interim the PSA arranged with the department to issue bottled water until fresh water was available,” said Naiker. The Xpress Times also learned that officers were given a 500ml bottle for each officer to use for a whole working day.

“The PSA does not have a problem with the installation of security cameras but however wish to stress that it is only logical to prioritise the water problem than the installation of cameras,” said Naiker.

The R250 000 camera installation crew from Mzansi Fire and Security were present on Thursday laying down installation in a trench

in front of the office. The officers said they warned in their station commander that they would chase away the secur i ty camera contractors if the water supply problem was not addressed, and this happened on the day when officers asked them to stop.

Raffique Aboobaker who is the owner of Mzansi Fire and Security was set to lose R150 000 on that day according to him due to transportation of ren ted equ ipment and contractual obligations.

“I am a battling man and I also need to get paid,” said Aboobaker as he was backed into a corner.

The Groutville RTI has approximately 30 officers in its employ, of which majority are male. We were taken to visit the toilets and

found them taped shut. The officers told us that in spite of having multiple 2000 litre JoJo tanks, Ilembe failed to top them up regularly and was not drinkable.

“When I have to relieve myself I realise I have to come outside to fill water from the tank to take to the toilet and then to I am already thinking twice,” said a male officer. A female officer said that she “hold herself for the

KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu launched the first phase of the Rehabilitation of Urban Roads project on Thursday, 17 March 2016.

The R16.5 million project is an initiative established by the Mayor, and will see the rehabilitation of Manor Drive, Clover, Everest, Thucker, Centenary and Azalea roads.

According to Director of Civils, Fiso Mhlongo, this is the first phase of a three-year project.

“We are starting with the roads that are in the worst condition. We will look into storm water, and the roads will be resurfaced,” he said.

Mayor Mthembu said that residents raised the issue of the poor condition of the roads at a meeting with the community.

“I have been inundated wi th compla in t s f rom

blockaded the entrance to the Groutville licensing and testing station with vehicles; w h i l s t t h e S t a t i o n Commander: Ms PN Ximba, looked on from her vehicle as her officers were chanting in protest. When asked for comment Ms Ximba referred us to Kwanele Ncalane. Mr Ncalane was unavailable for comment.

The other issue which another t raff ic off icer

pointed out was the rusty infrastructure claiming that it could fall on him. Officers in unison agreed that a borehole w a s n e e d e d urgently as well.

At the time of going to press, Naicker said: “Our members demands have been met and c a m e r a installation will be suspended until they sort

water and toilet problems.”He added that each officer

would get a 1.5 litre bottled water and water will be

available at the office. In addition VIP toilets will be in place until the water system is connected. “A forum will

be formed to keep the process on going for repairs,” said the PSA.

ordinary citizens, who have expressed to me, their displeasure on the state of public roads. My office then

initiated this project working together with the affected communities. It is with great satisfaction that we are

finally delivering this project to the community in the knowledge and expectation that activities taking place

within these roads will be more economical and more vibrant, in favour of road-users and residents.

“This is long overdue. I believe that this project will also assist with job creation, as 100% of labour will come f r o m t h e a r e a , ” s a i dMthembu.

He added that residents s h o u l d n o t b einconvenienced by the construction work being done.

“People must be informed about when the roads will be blocked, and signs must be put up so that residents will not be inconvenienced. Residents must also be tolerant,” he said.

Community members have expressed their support of the project.

“I am very pleased that KwaDukuza Municipality has responded to our call of concern as this area has been neglected for quite some time. This really shows that KwaDukuza is serious about delivering on our needs,” said local resident, Lucky Narayan.

Community frustrated with basic services

By Xpress Reporter

Various communities within the KwaDukuza Munic ipa l i ty (KDM), have been plagued by lack of service delivery as it relates to the most basic being water for two weeks.

P e o p l e f r o m G l e n h i l l s , Townview and Rocky Park had to endure water curfews that were put in place that started in the early hours of the morning and lifted the next night. This trend continued for two weeks until normalcy returned on Friday. The Glenhills community bared the brunt.

R e s i d e n t s f r o m Townview received various explanations from the Ilembe Call Centre as well as Ilembe employees which did not add up.

Various responses included: “Drought” to “a switch tripped” to “reservoir is low” and all within hours in a day. The Xpress Times sent an inquiry to the Ilembe District Municipality, two weeks ago and at the time of going to press we received no official explanations.

Social media was abuzz with residents from Glenhills keeping FRESH WATER FLOODING: Water floods this kitchen due to a month long leaking

pipe that allegedly burst on Saturday morning

Winter Fair 2016The most popular event on

KwaDukuza's entertainment calendar is undoubtedly the Winter Fair. The whole town comes alive during this time.

Winter Fair 2016 will be held from Friday, 1 July to Sunday, 3 July at the KwaDukuza Country Club and Recreation grounds.

The fair is Child Welfare SA: K w a D u k u z a ' s m a j o r fundraising event and the Winter Fair committee strive to improve the standards and quality of the fair every year. Bringing “smiles” to children

kiddies entertainment and a spectacular fun fair.

Proceeds from the fair will be used to render social work services to the community and ensure the sustainability of the Society (Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza). The fair gives the community an opportunity to have great fun with the family and at the same time contribute to a worthy cause. In view of financial constraints faced by child welfare organizations, the Society will collapse if the fair is not held.

Stall bookings are now open. To confirm bookings of stalls, a 50% deposit together with a s igned cont rac t must be received before 31 May 2016.

Only 60 stalls are available for sale. The balance of the payment must be received before the commencement of the fair on 1 July 2016. For stall bookings contact Penny Dhaver on 032-5512129.

President and Fair Director, M r S a n d e e p O u d h r a m commenced with meetings to plan Winter Fair 2016, the much a n t i c i p a t e d e v e n t i n KwaDukuza. Meetings are held every Mondays and Thursdays at 5pm at the Welfare Centre.

Interested members of the community are invited to attend these meetings and make input to improve the standards and quality of the fair.

a log as per Facebook…“6th day without water in Lot14

Murugan Road, as for ILEMBE is full of nonsense they pump water @ 11pm to 4am only when everyone is alseep.”

This past Sunday… Indian Village residents had to endure the “raw smell” of sewer water discharges and complained about Ilembe's response time.

A local businessman's Dad's

home was flooded due to what initially was a leak in Greyridge Drive only to burst on Saturday. The IT guy said that the leak had been going on for a month before the burst.

“Took over one-and-a-halfhours for the plumbers to get here. The main call centre number was unanswered. Thanks to Libra who went to Ilembe House then a response,” he said.

Premier Senzo Mchunu's “blue light” VIP protection support vehicles are still in the dark about the events leading to the collision near KwaDukuza on Friday night.

Mchunu's bodyguards allegedly lost control of their Ford Ranger on the N2 in Zinkwazi about 8pm on Friday. The bodyguards were slightly injured.

On Sunday Mchunu visited the two families in KwaMbonambi and Mhlathuze in Empangeni to pay his respects.

according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. His resurrection symbolizes the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him.

It is believed by Christians that through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus assuring all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

The meaning of Easter, for million of Christians, is that of honoring and recognizing Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead and His glorious promise of eternal life. Friends Buyi Hadebe and Nonto

Xulu were driving a Toyota Yaris from Empangeni to Durban with three passengers on Friday night for a conference at Christ Embassy Church.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed shock and called for a ban on blue light brigades.

Mchunu has assigned a special advisor to work with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) because he said the route had many anomalies yet to be solved.

THIS 1 DAY SPECIAL PRAYER FIXED ALL MY MARRIAGE AND MY FINANCIAL PROBLEMS IN 1 DAY

I am Trishni from Ballito, 6 years before I met this powerful spiritual healer, I was unhappy because my husband was cheating on me, our kids were always sickly and I had no money, I

tried everything from healers, priests and gurus but nothing seemed to work for me. I wasted a lot of money, luckily I saw two testimony; in the local papers by an old man whose draught

had been saved from drugs and alcohol abuse and a divorced lady had re-united with her ex-husband after 9 years. I made a call to her and booked an appointment to meet her. I paid a

R100 consultation and accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems before I spoke a word to her, she used a mirror to show face of people were trying to pull me down. She

performed a 1 day special prayer to clean me from bad - luck and also gave me very powerful love crystals for indian and plus a special ring to fix my financial problems. Within 3 days of

prayers. My husband confessed everything and asked for forgiveness. My kids are now healthy and I recently got a senior job promotion. Are you feeling totally helpless, heart broken

and financially miserable? Is the situation getting worse? Don't loose hope! I have referred many people and she has delivered

Letters to the Editor

Stalwarts' letter to the ANC NEC

To: The National Executive Committee of the ANC

c/o The Secretary-General, Mr Gwede Mantashe

The Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation jointly write to you at a difficult time in the history of the African National Congress and our country, South Africa.

The ANC has been through challenging times before, but with the resourceful and courageous leadership the organisation has been blessed with in its long history, it can yet again provide an invigorated, visionary course into the future.

We are deeply concerned about the current course on which our country is headed. We believe this course is contrary to the individual and collective legacy of our Founders.

We read disturbing stories in newspapers and other media about “state capture”; we see important institutions of democracy such as Parliament under great strain; we hear what ordinary South Africans tell us through our work, and are challenged by friends and comrades who witness cumulative fragmentation of the ANC, a great organisation our Founders helped build and sustain over generations. In the spirit of our Founders, we cannot passively watch these deeply concerning developments unfold and get worse by the day.

Leaders such as Tambo, Mandela and Kathrada helped shape the ANC by providing a vision of a better future for all our people. Their vision of freedom, social justice, and democracy was embraced by millions of South Africans. It was based on and driven by strong moral authority and principled engagement. Their leadership and that of the ANC were admired the world over. It inspired other people in their own struggles.

In 1994, the humanity and dignity of our people were restored, and the new state, a constitutional democracy, began to support that humanity and dignity with varied institutions it created and which were dedicated to achieving a better quality of life for all its citizens. In its leadership of this new democracy the government of the African National Congress enjoyed overwhelming support across the nation: the youth, religious communities, civil society, and South Africans of all persuasions. The worldwide solidarity in support of a cause that was as universal as it was humanistic, showed the extent to which South Africa had inspired the world. Sadly, by the day we witness the steady erosion of something very rare in human history: a near universal admiration of

a country and what it had pledged itself to achieve.

All South Africans have a living memory of the freedoms we have won and experienced. We cannot sit back and watch those freedoms being taken away. It is in this respect that it seems to us that the ANC has

significantly drifted away from the ideals to which our Founders and many others, dedicated their lives. We are disturbed by accounts we receive from students, religious leaders, members of our community, the media and from civil society organisations about the disillusionment of our people and their waning trust in the ANC as a result of the unfolding events.

We believe we have reached a watershed moment. We appeal to the National Executive Committee of the ANC as they meet over the weekend to take note of the mood of the people across the country, to r e f l e c t d e e p l y o n t h e i r s o l e m n responsibilities, to make urgent choices, and to take urgent corrective actions in the best interest of South Africa and its peoples. We make this call to remain true to our Founders and to continue their life's work to champion the cause of freedom and democracy for our people. It is for these that they were “prepared to die”. History will judge the ANC leadership harshly if it fails to take the decisions that will restore the trust and confidence of the people of South Africa.

In the true spirit of our Founders we offer our experience and expertise in any manner that might assist in facilitating a critical process of dialogue in which South Africans can find one another in the restoration of visionary cohesion and nation-building at this hour of need. Our doors are open!

Yours sincerely,Dr Frene Ginwala Acting Chairperson of

the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation

Prof Njabulo S Ndebele Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Mr. Derek Hanekom On behalf of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation - News 24

Corruption is a misery to South Africans

Righteousness and i ts synonyms goodness, virtue, decency, integrity, worthiness, rectitude, probity, morality, justice, honesty, honour, promises are fast disappearing from the vocabulary of politicians as the public purse is rapidly converted into personal troughs. As public resources are squandered, the ultimate losers are the urban poor. This is because corruption perpetuates and widens inequalities as it diverts resources away from the poor and undermines good governance, constitutional democracy, human rights and the rule of law. I believe when public money is stolen for private gain, it means fewer resources to build schools, hospitals, roads, water treatment facilities and also the fight to crime. The vulnerable suffer first and worst. There were great expectations that South Africa, the world's youngest democracy, would be d i f f e r en t , w i th i t s cons t i t u t i ona l

commitments to equality, transparency, apartheid, redress and improving the lot of the poor and disadvantaged. But 22 years into democracy, corruption has become endemic, with government officials estimating that R30 billion of public funds are lost annually to graft. Nelson Mandela said “We need a collective sense of mission to change mindsets; and to steer the nation away from dangerous course. Democracy has taken root in our country and with it have come peace and political stability. But all this will be little more than the shifting sands of illusion, if we do not take decisive measures to strengthen the moral fibre of our nation.” As he retreated from public life, Mandela lamented: “Little did we suspect that our own people, when they got a chance, would be as corrupt as the apartheid regime. That is one of the things that has really hurt us.”

South Africa is at a tipping point, where delivery of basic services to the poor communities is threatened by corrupt politicians, public service officials and individuals while the rest of society is left to struggle. Mahatma Gandhi argued: “ I would go to the length of giving the whole congress a decent burial, rather than put up with the corruption that is rampant.” (May 1939). Remember, righteousness must be practiced by all politicians then only we the people can live a better life. God bless South Africa.

Every drop counts?I took it upon myself to measure the loss of

water at a leaking tap. This tap is situated at

the Town Hall. After learning about our drought situation, I expected those in charge to lead by example. Lo and behold, they merely provide a lip service as usual.

Nevertheless, I placed a cup below the leak and it took approximately 10 minutes to fill up 250ml. this means in total the loss of water is 1 litre in 40 minutes. In a 24 hour period, how much water have we lost. You do the math. The second concern is the constant dripping of water outside the tote Woolworths area which I have not measured. Oh and most amazingly, did anyone notice the contraption placed in the centre of the pavement of that same spot? Thirdly, has anyone seen the water discharge outside the local court. I am told that there are pumps beneath the court building which throws out hundreds of litres of water every time the levels reach a certain height. Now, if this water which is obviously coming from some source beneath the court was sourced, it would add relief to many affected areas.

Lastly, did someone touch a raw nerve when they raised the issue of Hullett Street being renamed and got authorities to decide to tar other roads in the CBD. If they did, well done, as we will now have some relief from the poor roads. But I am quiet sure this renaming will take place close to election time to swing votes in favour of the self-proclaimed saviours who have clearly lost the plot. Allow me to remind you councillors you are our servants who have been elected to serve us and not some authority who knows it all as you want to believe. Shame on you for believing that you are some sort of angelic being. You are ordinary people whom we expect to do ordinary things.

sorry to say so but I used to beat her everyday, I could come home drunk, I never knew why I

was beating her and why I couldn’t stop drinking It used to hurt me whenever I saw her crying and wounded but still I continued doing

the same thing, Which led her to leave my home and she went to her aunties place. I begged her to forgive me and come back

home she refused my life became a real mess because she left me with a kid who had to be taken to school every morning but sometimes I couldn’t take him because of my too much

drinking. Really I had confused life until when I saw Mama Latifah’s advert and I went to her she is so nice because the first thing she did was to give me muti that stopped me from

Randsons through to final of Xpress Times Easter tourney

Randsons Volleyball Club are through to the finals of the K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association Easter Tournament sponsored by Xpress Times as they beat Darnall Sporting 2-0 in an enthralling semi-final played last Thursday.

Darnal l gave the i r more experienced Randsons a run for their money in the first set, keeping them on their toes throughout m a t c h i n g t h e m i n e v e r y department. The difference between the two sides was the ever fresh Sandhir 'Tin Boy' Jugmohan who played his heart out to secure the first set 25-22 for Randsons.

The second set was also evenly poised but man-of-the- match, Jugmohan assured Randsons a place for the second time this year after Randsons cruised to a 25-17

Jubilant Randsons are in the final of the Xpress Times Easter KO cup

victory in the second set. Randsons had earlier secured

their semi-final place after a convincing 25-19, 25-20 win over Cool Leaders.

The shock of the evening was the upset caused by 2015 Division I winners, Sunbrook over 2015 runner up in the Premier League, KSST. This ought to be the hugest upset in v o l l e y b a l l h i s t o r y i n KwaDukuza. Sunbrook were easily defeated 25-17 in the opening set. They stunned KSST in the second set beating them 25-21 to level matters and send the game into the final third set. The crowds expected a backlash from KSST but it was not to be. Sunbrook proved their mettle whilst the wheels of the KSST bus came off. Sunbrook cruised to a

humiliating 15-6 victory to secure their place in the semi-final.
