HOW WE WORK FOR THE PROFESSIONSimply stated, the ABA is the most effective, far-reaching advocate for the legal profession.

Empowered by the strength of its nearly 400,000 members, the ABA’s influence is seen supporting numerous professional and public policy issues, staunchly protecting the nation’s legal and judicial systems, and advocating for the profession and the rule of law before Congress, the Executive Branch and other governmental bodies.

Yet the Association remains a nonpartisan advocate, making no political contributions and having no political action committee.

Use this guide as a basic introduction to some of the many ways that the association is improving the administration of justice, establishing ethics codes, accrediting law schools and serving as your national representative of the legal profession.

Developing policy and standardsLeading the way in creating a just society, the ABA is a powerful voice on ethics and professional responsibility for lawyers. The Association created and continually updates the Model Rules of Professional Conduct that serve as standards for the ethics rules of most states. The ABA has continued to lead by creating Model Rules for Lawyer Disciplinary Enforcement and a Model Code for Judicial Conduct. Lawyers everywhere rely on opinions issued by the ABA’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

Protecting the legal and judicial systemsServing as the “eyes, ears and voice” of the organized bar in DC, the ABA Governmental Affairs Office has seen a host of recent successes, including federal funding for the Legal Services Corporation, modification of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines to protect attorney-client privilege, federal funding for indigent defense and support of the independence of the judiciary.

The ABA’s Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary provides the White House with the Committee’s evaluation of the professional qualifications of each prospective nominee to the lower federal courts in advance of the President making a nomination. The evaluation looks at the professional competence, integrity and judicial temperament of each nominee.

Advocating from the grass roots to the corridors of powerVolunteer members are encouraged to take an active role in the ABA’s advocacy efforts through such events as ABA Day on Capitol Hill.

ABA PolicyThe ABA House of Delegates has ultimate authority for establishing Association policy. This policy-making body is composed of approximately 550 delegates who represent various groups within the ABA and the legal profession as a whole.

Recommendations and reports adopted as ABA Policy can be searched in the online ABA Policy library.

Governmental and Legislative WorkThe Governmental Affairs Office serves as the focal point for the Association’s advocacy efforts before Congress, the Executive Branch and other governmental entities on diverse issues of importance to the legal profession. The GAO coordinates the Association’s activities and all representation on its behalf before governmental entities or officials.

ABA Day, the Association’s annual “lobby day” in Washington, DC, brings together volunteer leaders from local, territorial, state and specialty bar associations as well as from the ABA to speak with their elected representatives on issues critically important to members, the profession and the public at large

Ethics and ProfessionalismTurn to the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility for national leadership in developing and interpreting standards and scholarly resources in legal and judicial ethics, professional regulation, professionalism and client protection.

Amicus Curiae BriefsThe ABA files briefs, usually in the United States Supreme Court, that are based on ABA policies and that concern issues including access to justice for underserved and disadvantaged groups, fair and impartial criminal and civil procedure, and other issues of importance to the practice of law and lawyers.

AccreditationThe Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and the Accreditation Committee are recognized by the United States Department of Education as the accrediting agencies for programs that lead to the J.D. degree. This helps ensure high standards for a quality legal education.

Diversity and InclusionDiversity The ABA supports diversity in the legal profession through the Center for Racial and Ethnic Diversity and dedicated, active commissions, coalitions and scholarship programs. The ABA’s Sections, Divisions and Forums also have their own diversity-related groups that ensure inclusion as a common thread throughout the Association.

Women in the ProfessionAs the national voice for women lawyers, the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession fosters a new and better profession that ensures that women have equal opportunities for professional growth and advancement commensurate with their male counterparts.

ABA Diverse Speakers DirectoryA new resource for lawyers in all practice areas who have an interest in speaking and program-moderating opportunities. Members can become part of a national database of legal experts. Through the Legal Expert Author Pool (LEAP), the ABA offers a comparable service for diverse lawyers interested in writing for ABA publications.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship FundSince 2001, the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship has annually awarded 20 incoming diverse law students with $15,000 of financial assistance over the course of their three years in law school. This Scholarship is just one of many ways the ABA supports diversity in the educational pipeline to the profession.

Advocate for the ProfessionThe ABA advocates for the profession on numerous professional and public policy issues. The ABA also protects the legal and judicial systems of the U.S. by defending the independence of the profession and the judiciary and by fighting for access to justice through preservation of the Legal Services Corporation.

HOW WE WORK FOR SOCIETY“To advance the rule of law.” That is Goal IV of the ABA’s mission – a critical objective that the Association strives ceaselessly to attain throughout this nation and around the world.

ABA resources address a wide range of national issues, including low-income housing, assistance to veterans and service members, violence against women, cybersecurity and gender equity.

On the international front, ABA-fostered programs and projects are providing legal assistance for human rights advocates, supporting efforts to hold accountable perpetrators of atrocities and building sustainable institutions and societies that deliver justice, foster economic opportunity and ensure respect for human dignity.

Addressing national issues of critical concern ABA advocacy has garnered recent successes including Congressional reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, the debut of the ABA Veterans Claims and Assistance Network and record numbers of events nationwide as part of the association’s fifth annual National Pro Bono Celebration.

Making a difference internationallyThe global impact of the Association’s work to develop legal and judicial infrastructure is notable and expanding. The ABA Rule of Law Initiative recently received the Justice in the World Award for work with in-country partners in more than 60 countries including Guinea, China, Armenia, Serbia, Haiti, Peru and Tajikistan.

Social ResponsibilityFund for Justice and EducationFor nearly 50 years, the ABA Fund for Justice and Education, the ABA’s 501(c)3, has strengthened the Association’s ability to improve our justice system and serve those in need by helping to protect the elderly, represent the impoverished, advocate on behalf of youth in crisis and defend our human rights here and abroad.

Public EducationPromoting a public understanding of the law and its role in society is a fundamental mission of the Association. The ABA works to enrich classroom conversations through ABA Law Day activities, the National Civics & Law Academy for high school students, publications such as Insights on Law and Society, mock trial how-to guides for school children and more.

Death Penalty Representation ProjectThe Death Penalty Representation Project is the ABA’s expert source on issues related to legal representation in death penalty cases. This project receives countless requests for assistance from prisoners on death row and welcomes private attorneys from the civil bar willing to donate their time and skills to ensure high-quality legal representation for all.

Law and Aging Through research, policy development, technical assistance, advocacy, education and training, the ABA Commission on Law and Aging strengthens and secures the legal rights, quality of life and quality of care for elders.
