In addition, roadways still scheduled to receive a new top coat of pavement within the next 2 weeks include: James Road, Sherwood Road, Whitehall Lane, and Pasture Road.

Later this summer, the Town will be micro-surfacing Ashley Place, Fairchild Drive, Jessica Circle, and LindsayLane. Micro-surfacing is the process where any cracks are sealed, and a new asphalt wearing surface is applied to the existing pavement. Residents will receive more notification of this prior to the work commencing on their street. The Town is in the process of finalizing which streets will be included in resurfacing work to be completed this fall and next spring (2016). Please refer to the Engineering Division’s webpage later this summer for an updated list ofstreets to be resurfaced in the future. _____________________________________________________________________________________________

Real Estate Taxes… Water/Sewer… Storm Water Bills… Electronic Payments…

Water/Sewer/Storm Water bills were mailed on June 10 and must be paid by 5:30 PM on July 15 in order to receive the 10% discount. Payments not received by July 31 will accrue interest daily at an annual rate of 14% until payment is received. Postmarks are not accepted. The white mail box in the parking lot will be emptied at 5:30 PM on July 15 with no exceptions allowed so please plan ahead. The next bills will be mailed on September 10.

We can only accept debit and credit card payments through our online payment service and the link is available on the home page of the Town’s website.

The first installment of the FY16 Preliminary Real Estate/Personal Property tax bills were mailed by June 30. Payment is due by August 3. The preliminary bills do not show either the valuation of the property or the tax rate; this information will be included on the actual tax bills after they are approved by the Department of Revenue in the late fall.

The preliminary bills are based on last year’s actual bills, plus liens and betterments, less abatements and exemptions, as adjusted to reflect the annual 2.5% tax increase allowed under Proposition 2 1/2. The state mandated interest rate is 14% for late payments. The first installment of the FY16 Actual bills will be mailed in December. Payments not received by the due dates are subject to interest and demand fees.

The demand fee increased from $5.00 to $25.00 as of January 1, 2009 by vote of Town Meeting. Effective January 1, 2014 we are no longer mailing payment reminders before imposing the demand fees on unpaid bills.

Please be sure that if you’re using an online bill payment service through your bank that you allow plenty of time for your bank to mail a check to our office. Most banks require 7 – 10 business days to guarantee on-time payment. Also, please verify that you have the proper bill number or account number referenced on your payment. Bill numbers change each cycle and are often not updated on your on-line bill payment checks.

We do not receive electronic payments from your bank unless you use the link from our website. If you choose to use this link, you may pay up until the due date and your payment will be considered timely.

Taking Root for the Future

A Commemorative Shade Tree Planting Program

The Town of Reading is proud of its “Taking Root for the Future” shade tree planting program. The tree planting program offers an opportunity for you to help beautify Reading and recognize a person or event with the planting of a shade tree.

Any person, business, group or organization may sponsor a tree and be recognized on the Town’s commemorative plaque located in the Town Hall and on the Town of Reading website. You may be celebrating a birth, a graduation or wedding, or donate in memory of a loved one, or acknowledge your businesses, group or organization.

Reading’s publicly owned trees are a capital asset and are as important as our streets, sidewalk, public building and recreational facilities. In addition to the advantage of sponsorship, our community will enjoy the numerous benefits of the trees for generations to come.

Your sponsorship contribution of $300 will pay for the tree, it’s planting and care, as well as a plate on the commemorative plaque displayed in the Town Hall. Please note that the planting location for an individual tree cannot be specified. Acknowledgement of sponsorship will be through the town plaque and the website.

For more information, or to sponsor a tree, contact the Public Works Department at 781-942-9077.
