It’s a dangerous over-simplification to believe that some people are innately ‘good’ while others are innately ‘evil’ or ‘bad.’ Sometimes we behave in a saintly fashion, when empathy and compassion impel us to put the needs of others before our own, resulting in altruism and kindness and sometimes we may behave badly, when egocentric impulses cause us to put our needs before the welfare of others. For an example, which did not have a direct relation with good and evil, I want to introduce the readers an animal, which produce us coffee through its system.Small, furry animals known as civets snack on coffee berries, then pass the partially digested coffee beans through their system. Enzymes inside of the animals’ stomachs bring out a flavor and body in the coffee that make a convert out of anyone who drinks.The droppings - perhaps the most expensive feces in existence - are gathered, processed, and turned into the most unique coffee in the world, known as kopi luwak.We have to believe that there are a lot of good things in this world, that are far away from evil, even if we see something bad, we have to believe, that from this bad thing, something good can be the result.Dearest Readers, I wish you all the best in life and I hope you will enjoy this Issue of Alkoun and Superstar.

لعّل موضوع الخير والّشر من أكثر المواضيع اّلتي تأّمل فيها اإلنسان، رغم أّنه ال يوجد انسان شرير بطبيعته، انما تتولد لديه نزعة بنار صدره يلهب ومن ورداً، يجني لن شوكًا يزرع فمن وسلوكه. حياته على تأثيراتها تتبلور حياته في تعتريه ظروف تلقاء الشر الضغائن سيحرق ويحترق. ولكن إن نظرنا إلى الشر بمنظور آخر فسوف نجد أّن الشر أحيانًا يؤدي إلى الخير، فإلنسان إن يقصد بتصرٍف ما إيذاء اآلخر، ينسى أّن الذي أمامه ممكن أن يُحول الشر هذا إلى خير. برغم كل الصعوبات التي تواجه البشر إال ان هناك قوة كبيرة لن

توقفهم عن تحقيق أحالمهم. اإليمان، الصبر واألمل هم الذين يجعلوننا نتخطى كل الصعاب.

فإن كان حيوان زباد البري، الذي يأكل حبوب قهوة في جزيرة بالي اإلندونيسية، يصنع أحد أهم أصناف القهوة المتميزة في شتى أنحاء العالم، واألغلى ثمنًا، عبر إطعامه حبوب البن ثم جمع فضالته وغسلها وإخراج الحبوب منها، وهو ما يعطي هذه القهوة نكهتها

المميزة، فأليس باستطاعة إنسان طموح إستخراج الخير من الشرالموجه إليه؟

تحدثت عن الشر أعزائي القّراء، ألّن هناك شر استهدف المجلة التي تنتظرونها بشغف بكل عدد بطريقة تثير اإلشمئزاز. من الصعب جداً فهم طمع اإلنسان الذي يحوله في لحظة إلى ذئب مفترس، أين الضمير في التعامل مع اهلل أوال ثّم مع البشر؟ أنا أعلم علم

اليقين أن الشر يعود إلى صاحبه بشٍر أسوأ منه والشاطر من يضحك أخيراً.

First state visit to India

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa paid his first state visit to India in February, 2014. HM the King was accompanied by HH Shaikh Nasser, HH Shaikh Khalid, a high-level delegation comprising Ministers, senior officials and

business leaders. The King and his delegation of notables paid a visit to the memorial of the pre-eminent lndian leader Mahatma Gandhi at ‘Raj Ghat’ where

he placed a wreath, and rose petals were laid down on the tomb by HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.

The King also visited the beautiful and historic Taj Mahal, a mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century in loving memory of his late wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Indian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Mohan Kumar described the historic visit as a huge success.

Gruelling 42km swim for

charity

TOP Bahraini sportsman h.h. Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa has completed a gruelling 42km swim from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain for charity. The Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) deputy chairman joined 70 participants from around the world taking part in the event. His Majesty King Hamad greeted his son after he swam non-stop from the Sunset Beach Resort in Saudi to the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa.The King said the achievement was an outstanding accomplishment for Bahrain and an inspiration for young Bahraini sportsmen and women. He added it was a reflection of the fraternal relations between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, and that it served to build bridges of friendship with athletic people throughout the world.

وكانت سباحة التحدي شهدت تحديات عديدة بعد أن تعرض المشاركين ألجواء متقلبة في حالة الطقس، غلبت عليها سرعة وشدة الرياح التي وصلت لثالثين عقدة، إلى جانب ارتفاع الموج ومعاكسة التيارات البحرية لمسار السباحة.

غير أن إصرار سمو الشيخ خالد بن حمد وعزيمته غلبا كل الظروف التي عاكسته، في إطار إنهائه للسباحة في الوقت المتوقع.

Aabar Investments based in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, announced the launch of a competition to send an Emirati citizen to the space. It was announced during a visit by George Whitesides recently to Abu Dhabi, the President and CEO of Virgin Galactic in Abu Dhabi.

Whitesides said: “I am pleased to announce that Aabar Investments and Virgin Galactic has set aside a special ticket for an Emirati citizen to travel to space on board the vehicle, “Space Ship 2 “ of the Virgin Galactic. Currently the tickets are being sold for 250 thousand dollars per ticket.

Aabar will organize in consultation with its parent

company, the International Petroleum Investment

Company, a special contest in the United Arab

Emirates to choose the lucky winner. Details and

In Kuwait there are a lot of creative energy and youth leaders, who are capable of planning. One of them is Sheikh Talal Abu Mohammad al-Sabah, the President of the Federation of Asia and Kuwait for Bowling.

Because of the efforts of this man, the national team qualified for the Bowling World Championships in Los Angeles year, 2013.

If you followed journey of Sheikh Talal can realize the magnitude of his achievements. The Bowling club is one of the most active and organized clubs. Although Kuwait has been through difficult situations regards the level of sports in recent years, the club stood under the leadership of Sheikh Talal Al-Mohammad, an example of success.

Sheikh Talal was able to build a large base of Bowling in Kuwait and to prepare several line ups, so he was being able to participate in five tournaments in different countries at the same time. He developed the game, and was able to lead the club in a successful way. Every year the Bolwing team achieves new sucess, that raises

the name of Kuwait high on the international sporting arena.

Emperor of bowling, Sheikh Talal Al-Mohammad was proud to win the post of Prime AFC bowling for the third time in a row last September.

He was able to develop this game, and he made the Asian Bowling at the forefront of World Bowling. As he was a player in this kind of sport, he knows well the entrances and exits of it. In 2012, the national team was qualified for the World Championship, hosted by Los Angeles.

The success of Sheikh Talal did not stop at this point, his efforts continued and yielded the establishment of the International Center for Bowling, which will host the international Championship for Bowling this year.

Sheikh Talal Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah is an honored example for the ruling family in Kuwait and the Gulf.

والمتتبع لمشوار الشيخ طالل الرياضي يدرك حجم اإلنجازات الكبيرة التي حققها، فنادي البولينغ من أكثر النوادي الرياضي خالل السنوات نشاطا وتنظيمًا وإنجازا، ورغم ما عانته الكويت من حاالت هبوط وصعود على المستوى الكويت، ومثااًل لنجاح ال يعرف المحمد منارة مضيئة في سماء البولينغ ورئيسه الشيخ طالل نادي األخيرة، ظل

التوقف.

استطاع الشيخ طالل أن يبني قاعدة كبيرة للبولنغ في الكويت وأن يجهز عدة تشكيالت تمكنه من المشاركة النادي لقيادة وناجحة محكمة وخطة للعبة، اطارا وضع كما واحد، بوقت مختلفة دول في بطوالت خمس في النادي انجازات كبيرة ترفع اسم الكويت عاليًا على ساحة والتشكيالت المختلفة، وال يمر عام من دون أن يحقق

الرياضات العالمية.

ويكفي امبراطور البولينغ الشيخ طالل المحمد فخراً فوزه بمنصب رئيس االتحاد االسيوي للبولينغ للمرة الثالثة الرياضة على مستوى الماضي، وذلك باجماع جميع اعضاء االتحاد وذلك لما قدمه لهذه التوالي في سبتمبر على قارة آسيا، حيث استطاع أن يطور هذه اللعبة، وأن يجعل البولينغ اآلسيوي في مقدمة البولينغ العالمي، فكونه كان العبًا في هذه الرياضة، وعاشقًا لها، فهو يعرف جيداً مداخلها ومخارجها، كما يعرف بذكائه القيادي كيف يقود النوادي واالتحادات ويحفز جميع من يعمل معه على النجاح المتواصل، فإنجازات نادي البولينغ الكويتي بقيادته تشكل في

كل عام رقما قياسيا لم يستطع اي ناد تحقيقه.

في انجلوس لوس استضافتها التي العالم بطولة الى الوطني الكويت منتخب تأهل المنصرم 2012 عام ففي العام الجاري، باالضافة الى مشاركته في أربع بطوالت آسيوية وبطولة خليجية، حصد خاللها ذهبية و6 فضيات و4

ميداليات برونزية.

نجاح الشيخ طالل لم يتوقف عند هذا الحد، فجهوده المتواصلة ومثابرته أثمرت إنشاء المركز العالمي للبولينغ الذي تم افتتاحه مؤخراً، ليكون من أبرز المنشآت الرياضية في الشرق األوسط، كما سيستضيف هذا المركز بطولة

العالم للبولنغ هذا العام.

الماضي الكويت في شهر رمضان البولينغ بل استضافة النجاح لم تتوقف نجاحاته على رياضة وكذلك امبراطور الخطوه العالم بهذه العربي وحتى والخليج الكويت أهل الذي فاجأه القدم، للصاالت لكرة لألندية العالم بطولة الذكيه التي تحسب للكويت وللشيخ طالل المحمد على المستوي الشخصي، مما أجبر االنحاد الدولي لكرة القدم األعتراف ببطولة العالم لألندية للصاالت بفضل النجاح والتنظيم الرائع الذي أشرف عليه الشيخ طالل المحمد على

كل صغيره وكبيره.

الجدير بالذكر أن الشيخ طالل المحمد لقب في أبو الخيرين ألنه صاحب أياد بيضاء وقلب كبير مفتوح للجميع خصوصا رعايته أليتام وفقراء المسلمين سواء بالكويت او خارج الكويت ، وكانت له بصمه واضحه ودور فعال في تبرعات انسانيه لمخيم الالجئين السوريين بالزعتري وإضافة إلى كل جهوده في رياضة البولينغ فهو يعمل دائمًا على دعم الفرق الرياضية األخرى، ككرة قدم الصاالت وفرق كرة اليد والفروسيه، إضافة إلى دعمه لكثير

من الرياضيين والمدربين في كافة االلعاب.

Because of his experience, wisdom and diplomacy, he began his work as a diplomat after graduating from the university directly. When you listen to his Arabic language you will not recognize that he is not from the Middle East.

A modest and tolerant Diplomat, that is, what was praised by staff and associates. What we hear from businessmen and diplomats who have had an opportunity to deal with him from time to time, is enough to know how much he is a modest and tolerant person.

He is, His Excellency Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to Bahrain. Alkoun Magazine had the pleasure to interview him, to let you know this special personality.

His Excellency is from Beijing the capital of the People’s Republic of China. He joined the Chinese Foreign Ministry after graduation to work in the diplomatic corps, which he is still in.

He spent most of his time between China and the Arab world. He worked for the Ministry in the management of western Asia and Northern Africa. He also worked in embassies of the Peoples Republic of China in the region, such as the Syrian Arab Republic, Jordan, the State of Palestine and the Arab Republic of Egypt. This was an opportunity for him, to visit all the Arab countries and more than once.

Before becoming an Ambassador, his Excellency visited Bahrain in the year 2001. This experience allowed him the opportunity to see the progress and development that

took place in this country. The Juffair area where the Chinese Embassy is was almost empty. Also what left him a deep impression is that in one of his visits with the official delegation of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, they have had the honor to meet His Highness the Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Emir of the State at that time.

The Fluency and the eloquence in his Arabic, raised our desire to know about the secret, he told us, saying: “My journey with the Arabic language began in the 70th, when I traveled and spent four years in Egypt with the family, where my father had an official mission. I have been educated in Egyptian schools and in the Arabic language. That was the main reason to continue my study of Arabic at the University in Beijing and to work in the diplomatic corps later. The constant practice has a great merit in being able to understand the language and its beauty, but it’s a difficult language such as the Chinese one, that I am proud of.”

It is noticeable that there are an increasing number of Bahraini students now traveling to study in China on their own expenses. The Ambassador surprised us when he told us, that the number of students reached more than 200 students in the past year .

In addition, the Academy schools promote the spread of the language as Hawar International School in Bahrain, where the Chinese language is being techaed since few years ago for primary students , the Ambassador was asked many times for a place to learn Chinese in the Kingdom of Bahrain .

All this encouraged him to put the distinct idea to HE Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Janahi, Chairman of the University of Bahrain, to establish a center for Chinese language at the university, which was highly welcomed, and they worked together on it, until the agreement was signed with His Majesty the King and President Xi Jinping, during the visit of His Majesty the King to China.

The center will be established as the “Confucius Institute”, such as what was found years ago in the Arab Republic of Egypt as well as in the United Arab Emirates. “I think that step will be important and useful for the Bahraini student, who wants to learn Chinese and know about the Chinese culture and it will be easy to study in China, I personally see it as a broad prospect .” said His Excellency.

After what we got about the prospects of the Chinese language in the Kingdom of Bahrain, we asked his Excellency about the Kingdom of Bahrain, he said: “Bahrain is a small country in area and population but large in its location and its special role in the region. And do not forget that it was the center of economic, financial and maritime to the Gulf region and is still, even though it is now facing stiff competition. Bahrain is characterized by openness, cultural and civilizational diversity, where different cultures and religions and everyone living here safely and freed with harmony and this is what encouraged the expatriates of various nationalities to work and life here for many years. All guests on this good earth see and feel how the Bahraini people are characterized by the hospitality and humility. This is what I have seen in the general public as well as in the leadership.”

HE added: “The historic visit by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al -Khalifa to China last September, culminated in a complete of success. The visit addressed the various aspects of the relationship and cooperation between the two countries.”

Talking to his Excellency was very interesting, but each beginning has an end. In conclusion he said: “I would like to thank “Alkoun Magazine” for hosting me in this distinctive issue. فى كسفير مجيئه من تقريبا سنوات 10 قبل الفرصة له أتاحت التجربة وهذه 2012 عام يونيو أن يرى التطور والتقدم الذي حصل في هذا البلد الرنانة العربية فبكلماته ذلك. على ويشهد كان كيف متحدثا، الوراء الى بالذاكرة نقلنا فقد ذهنه في عالقا كان حيث البحرين، باب شكل منذ الزيارة األولى انه كان مقابل البحر ولكن اآلن تغير كليا، ومنطقة الجفير التى توجد فيها سفارة أكثر من صارت واآلن خالية شبه كانت الصين المناطق ازدهارا. ويحدثنا أيضا ان ما ترك له انطباع عميق هو انه فى احدى زياراته مع وفد رسمى من مقابلة فى الشرف لهم كان الصينية الخارجية صاحب السمو األمير عيسى بن سلمان آل خليفة مزيج وهي الكريمة وشخصيته آنذاك الدولة أمير الرؤية وصاحب والتواضع والبساطة الطيبة من الجاللة صاحب لدى اآلن نلمسه ما تماما الثاقبة

الطالقة والفصاحة باللغة العربية مع الكثير من الهدوء عند تحدثه للغة العربية، أثار رغبتنا للتعرف العربية اللغة عن سرها، فأخبرنا قائال: »رحلتي مع أربع بدأت فى السبعنيات عندما سافرت وقضيت الوالد يعمل حيث العائلة مع مصر فى سنوات فى تعليمى من جزء فأنهيت رسمية مهمة فى كانت وهذه العربية وباللغة المصرية المدارس اللغة دراستى مواصلة فى الرئيسى السبب في والعمل بكين في الجامعة في العربية السلك الدبلوماسي الحقا. والممارسة المستمرة كانت لها الفضل الكبير فى اجادتى لهذه اللغة وأنا الصينية اللغة مثل صعبة ولكنها الجميلة

فخور بها.«

»اطلبوا العلم ولو في الصين« مقولة من قديم أبناء جاء وها يرددها من وكثيٌر نسمعها الزمان هناك أن المالحظ فمن يطبقونها. البحرين اهل يسافرون البحرينيين الطلبة من متزايدة أعداد اآلن للدراسة فى الصين وعلى نفقاتهم الخاصة ان أخبرنا عندما السفير سعادة مع تفاجئنا وقد طالب 200 عن يزيد ما الى وصل الطلبة عدد المدارس ان الى إضافة الماضية. السنة في فعلت كما اللغة انتشار من تعزز االكاديمية مدرسة حوار الدولية فى البحرين حيث فتحت منذ سنوات حصة للغة الصينية أمام تالميذ االبتدائية مكان عن عديدة مرات ُسئِلت انني الى إضافة البحرين. مملكة في هنا الصينية اللغة لتعلم على متميزة فكرة طرح على شجعنى ذلك كل رئيس جناحي محمد ابراهيم الدكتور سعادة جامعة البحرين وذلك بإنشاء مركز لتعليم اللغة الصينية في الجامعة الذي رحب بها بحماس عاٍل وعملنا معا حتى تم تتويج هذه الفكرة أثناء زيارة صاحب الجاللة الملك الى الصين بالتوقيع على االتفاقية أمام جاللة الملك والرئيس الصيني شي معهد »باسم المركز انشاء سيتم لذا جينبينغ. سنوات منذ موجود هو ما مثل كونفوشيوس« االمارات في وكذلك العربية مصر جمهورية في

العربية المتحدة وأعتقد ان هذه الخطوة ستكون في الراغب البحريني للطالب ومفيدة مهمة تعلم اللغة الصينية والتعرف عن الثقافة الصينية الصين فى الدراسة فى ويسهل الباب له ويفتح

وأنا شخصيا أرى في ذلك آفاقا واسعة.

بعد ان تعرفنا عن آفاق اللغة الصينية في مملكة البحرين كان ال بد ان نستطلع من سعادته عن رأيه البحرين، مملكة بشأن متكلف والغير المتواضع صغير بلد »البحرين قائال: يحدثنا الصدد وبهذا فى كبيرة لكنها السكان وعدد المساحة في ننسى وال المنطقة. فى المميز ودورها موقعها والمالحي والمالي االقتصادي المركز كانت انها اآلن تواجه انها رغم والتزال الخليج لمنطقة باالنفتاح تتميز البحرين مملكة شديدة. منافسة والتنوع الثقافي والحضاري، فتوجد فيها الثقافات واألديان المختلفة والكل يعيش هنا بأمان وحرية مختلف من المغتربين شجع ما وهذا وانسجام ولسنوات هنا والحياة العمل على الجنسيات الطيبة األرض هذه على كضيوف وكلنا طويلة. نرى ونشعر كيف ان الشعب البحريني يتميز بكرم لمسته ما وهذا والتواضع الناس وحب الضيافة القيادة. لدى وكذلك الشعب عامة لدى حقيقة والمعاملة ترحاب بكل قوبلت كسفير هنا فأنا والمسؤولين الناس مع وتواصلى الطيبة

والقيادة سهلة وبدون أيقيود.

ان العالقات الصينية البحرينية بدأت بمسار نور أضاف حيث مراحلها بأحسن اآلن وهي متوهج قام التى التاريخية الزيارة بفضل هذا « سعادته: ال عيسى بن حمد الملك الجاللة صاحب بها الماضي سبتمبر شهر في الصين الى الخليفة جاللته قوبل حيث كامل. بنجاح تكللت والتي بأعلى مستوى االستقبال من قبل فخامة الرئيس مع مثمرة محادثات جاللته وأجرى شيجينبينغ العالقة جوانب مختلف تناول الصينية القيادة والتعاون بين البلدين الصديقين. الزيارة وضعت الصين بين العالقات لتطور جديدة أسس بين والتعاون بالصداقة تدفع وسوف والبحرين مستويات الى المجاالت مختلف فى البلدين هذه لخدمة بالعمل وسعيد أتشرف وأنا جديدة. مختلف التواصلمع بتكثيف حاليا وأقوم العالقة من عليه االتفاق تم ما وتطبيق لمتابعة الجهات قبل القيادتين ونبنى عليه لما يرجع بالخير والنفع

للبلدين والشعبين«.

الحديث مع سعادته كان شيقا جدا ولكن لكل بداية ال بد من نهاية وفي الختام قال سعادته : أود أن أشكر مجلتكم »مجلة الكون« على استضافتها خالص خاللها من وأوجه المتميز العدد بهذا لي تحياتي الى المملكة البحرين العزيزة شعبا وقادة على واالزدهار والتقدم النمو استمرار لها داعيا .

وشمالى آسيا غربي ادارة فى وباألخص افريقيا وهي االدارة المعنية بالشؤون العربية والشرق األوسطية كما خدم في سفارات عدة المنطقة في الشعبية الصين لجمهورية المملكة ، السورية العربية الجمهورية مثل األردنية الهاشمية ، دولة فلسطين وجمهورية مصر العربية فكان له الفرصة لطبيعة عمله أن زار كافة الدول العربية وألكثر من مرة. وهذا بدول مفكرته واثراء معرفته في ساهم ما بأنه يشعر ان جعله وما المنطقة وشعوب

جزءا منهم.

Nelson Mandela led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa with a multi-racial democracy. Imprisoned for 27 years he refused to compromise his principles, while for most of that time his own party, the African National Congress (ANC), was broken. But he emerged in February 1990 to become the dominant influence in his country, without whom peace was unlikely. When he was elected President in April 1994, whites as well as blacks accepted him as the embodiment of his country’s new democracy, with a unique moral authority. Mandela ultimately became South Africa’s

first black president.Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on 18 July 1918 and was given the name of Nelson by one of his teachers. His father Henry was a respected advisor to the Thembu royal family.Mandela was educated at the University of Fort Hare and later at the University of Witwatersrand, qualifying in law in 1942. He became increasingly involved with the African National Congress (ANC), a multi-racial nationalist movement trying to bring about political change in South Africa.In 1948, the National Party came to power and began to implement

a policy of ‘apartheid’, or forced segregation on the basis of race. The ANC staged a campaign of passive resistance against apartheid laws.In 1952, Mandela became one of the ANC’s deputy presidents. By the late 1950s, faced with increasing government discrimination, Mandela, his friend Oliver Tambo and others began to move the ANC in a more radical direction. In 1956, Mandela went on trial for treason. The court case lasted five years, and ended with Mandela being acquittedIn March 1960, police at Sharpeville killed 69 black anti-apartheid

demonstrators. The government declared a state of emergency and banned the ANC. In response, the organisation abandoned its policy of non-violence and Mandela helped establish the ANC’s military wing ‘Umkhonto we Sizwe’ or ‘The Spear of the Nation’. He was appointed its commander-in-chief and travelled abroad to receive military training and to find support for the ANC.On his return he was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. In 1963, Mandela and other ANC leaders were tried for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. The following year

Nelson Mandela was and still is the most respected, and probably the most loved of all world leaders in the late 20th century, and the most enduring of the heroes who emerged from the political convulsions of the 1980s. He personified the peaceful and rapid transition of power in South Africa that many had thought impossible, while his commitment to reconciliation was underlined by his own experience of personal sacrifice and forgiveness.

Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was held in Robben Island prison, off the coast of Cape Town, and later in Pollsmoor Prison on the mainland. During his years in prison he became an international symbol of resistance to apartheid.In 1990, the South African government responded to internal and international pressure and released Mandela, at the same time lifting the ban against the ANC. In 1991 Mandela became the ANC’s leader.He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with FW de Klerk,

then president of South Africa, in 1993. The following year South Africa held its first multi-racial election and Mandela was elected its first black president.In 1998, he was married for the third time to Graça Machel, the widow of the president of Mozambique. Mandela’s second wife, Winnie, whom he married in 1958 and divorced in 1996, remains a controversial anti-apartheid activist.In 1997 he stepped down as ANC leader and in 1999 his presidency of South Africa came to an end. In 2004, Mandela announced his retirement from public life, although

his charitable work continued. On 29 August 2007, a permanent statue to him was unveiled in Parliament Square, London.Mandela had been increasingly frail and in poor health in recent years and had been in hospital several times in the last year. He had a history of lung problems dating back to his years in prison, when he contracted tuberculosis. In June 2013, Mandela was hospitalized for a lung infection, which persisted until December 5th 2013, when the 95 year old, sadly passed away.On the 15th of December 2013, South Africa held the state funeral

for Nelson Mandela. The ceremony was held in Mandela’s home at Qunu, a province of Eastern Cape. U.S President Barack Obama had also presented a powerful speech a few days earlier for Mandela’s four-hour memorial service. An estimated 5000 guests attended the ceremony, including Prince Charles, Malawian President, Joyce Banda, and Rev Jesse Jackson among other esteemed dignitaries.Even though his soul has been laid to rest, Mandela has become a historic icon and will be reminisced globally for the years to come.

بطل النضال والكفاح ....نيلسون مانديال

مناضل سياسي إستحق لقب الزعيم عن جداره كانت العنصرية عدوه اللدود ، وسعيه الدئوب وكفاحه كان لرفع راية المساواه عاليًة لترفرف بجناحيها علي عالم مليئ بالتفرقه ، لكن شجاعته وصموده تحدوا كل الصعاب لتحقيق هذا الحلم الذي لم يفارقه لحظه وإستطاع أن يكون هو أول رئيس أسود لجنوب أفريقيا في عام 1٩٩4 ثم تنحي عن هذا المنصب بعد خمس سنوات من توليه إياه . حكيم، دمث الخلق ، شجاع و يتحلي بصفات النبالء مما جعل خلودة في قائمة العظماء شئ مؤكد بفعد سجنه لمدة 2٧ عامًا بسبب ناضله ضدد )االبارتايد( اي سياسة الفصل العنصري خرج من سجنه ليصفح عن سجانيه البيض السابقين

بعد إطالق سراحه من السجن في تسعينيات القرن الماضي نشآته وطفولته:

ولد » نيلسون روليهالهال مانديال » في 18 يوليو 1٩18 ، في قبيلة الطهوسا للعائلة المالكة تهمبو .. في حي افريقي فقير جدا .. فعانى منذ طفولته مظالم التمييز العرقي والطبقي والحرمان . درس مانديال في جامعة قاسمته سمراء شابة علي تعرف ثم حياته بداية في محاميًا عمل ، ويتواترسراند وجامعة هير فورت طريقة للكفاح ضدد العنصرية بل وكانت أكثر منه حماسة واشتعااًل نحو التغييرفأعجب بيها وتزوجها . حياتهم الزوجية كانت حياة بائسة تعيسة وكتبت الزوجة الشابة عن حياتها مع الزعيم كتابا قالت في احدى صفحاته )ان حياتي معه كانت حياتي بدونه( اشارة الى حياة السجن واالبعاد واالعتقال والنفي التي تعرض

لها مانديال في حياته مما انعكس بشكل سلبي علي حياتهما الزوجية .قصة كفاحه ومجاباته للفصل العنصري:

ولم تمض سوى سنوات قليلة بعد ذلك حتى حكم على مانديال بالسجن المؤبد .. ليبتدا من سجنه نضااًل أخر عن طريق المراسالت والمقاالت .. والكلمات التي كانت تبث الحماسة في نفوس األجيال الجديدة ، تجرع انفرادية لنحو 2٧ سنة فتبعه مجددا ناس البقاء في زنازين مانديال قسوة السجن ورهبة االعتقال ومرارة الحرية مجددا لينتخب .. وبعد أن اطلق سجين العصر )مانديال( من سجنه ليمارس حياة كثيرون اخرون الذين . والذي أعلن سياسة اإلعفاء عن كل أول رئيس أسود لها افريقيا ويصبح رئيسًا لجمهورية جنوب أساءوا بحق الشعب األسود من العنصريين البيض من خالل مشروع المصالحة الوطنية على ان يعترف من اخطأوا بحق السود بذنبهم وليعتذروا عما بدر منهم اتجاههم..وفعال حصلت المصالحة الوطنية الكبرى ـــتقام وطغت لغة ـ ـ ـ .. وانطوت صفحة الماضي االليم بكل مآسيها وآثارها البغيضة فساد العفو على االنـالسالم على االحتراب وانطلق الجميع يد واحدة لبناء جنوب افريقيا جديدة ولم يكتف مانديال بذلك الصفح .. متناسيا كل ماجرى له ولشعبه نائبا له ـــيس جمهورية جنوب افريقيا السابق رئـ والسماحة بل عين على يده ويد العنصريين البيض الذين تراسهم فيما مضى .. وهكذا انتهى كل فساد السالم االجتماعي بدال

للتناحر العرقي والسياسي . الفارس يخوض آخر معاركه :

خاض الزعيم آخر معاركه مع المرض الذي توفي علي أثره عن عمر يناهز ٩5 عام أمضي أغلبها في السعي وراء الكفاح ضدد العنصرية تجرع العالم شربة المر لفراق هذا الزعيم العظيم وخاصة من ناضل من أجلهم ، وكان مانديال قد أنتقل للمستشفي إثر إصابته بالتهاب رئوي حاد ، ويرجح أن إصابته بهذا المرض كانت خالل العنصري والذي أصيب خاللها الفصل الكاب في زنزانات نظام آيالند قبالة مدينة سجنه في معتقل روبن

بمشاكل تنفسية ناجمة عن تداعيات إصابته بالسل خالل تلك األعوام .أٌقوال عظيمة لرجل عظيم

األفواه العظيمة ال يخرج منها اال العظمة والعقول الكبيرة التي إنغمست في خضم الحياة والنضال البد أن تنتج حكم خالدة وهذه بعض األقوال المأثورة عن مانديال:

إننا نقتل أنفسنا عندما نضّيق خياراتنا في الحياة.التسامح الحق ال يستلزم نسيان الماضي بالكامل.

الحرية ال يمكن القيام بعد كل مرة نتعثر فيها.ال يوجد شيء مثل العودة إلى المكان…الذي يبقى بدون تغيير لتجد فيه ما عدلته بنفسك.

البقاء في ظروف سر هي الراسخة المعتقدات أن ، كما أي ظروف قاسية اإلنسان فيتكيف مع أما جسم الحرمان.

إني أتجول بين عالمين ، أحدهما ميت واآلخر عاجز أن يولد .ليس هناك مكان حتى اآلن أريح عليه رأسي.

إذا خرجت من السجن في نفس الظروف التي اعتقلت فيها فإنني سأقوم بنفس الممارسات التي سجنت من أجلها.

the battery precision with their subtle mechanical inventions;others can appreciate a new

time lecture or a special design. Watches are objects that remain companions of our life time

Génie 01 by Breva

The Breva Génie 01 is the world’s first wristwatch with time, altimeter, barometer – for forecasting the weather – and power reserve indications provided by a fully mechanical movement, much of which is on display through the open dial and display back. The proprietary movement of the Génie 01 was developed exclusively for Breva by Jean-François Mojon/Chronode.

A dial side tour reveals a plethora of easy-to-read indications to keep the wearer fully informed about current time, altitude, remaining power in the mainspring, and a weather forecasting barometer.

Hours and minutes are displayed on a semi-transparent smoky-sapphire sub dial at 8 o’clock, with small seconds below 12 o’clock. A scale displaying altitude arcs around the top perimeter of the ‘dial’. Barometric pressure is indicated on a second semi-transparent smoky-sapphire sub dial at 2 o’clock, with icons providing scientifically based forecasts of likely weather conditions to come.

A 65-hour power reserve indicator at 4 o’clock is instantly recognizable thanks to its engraved compass rose – an icon found throughout Génie 01. At 6 o’clock, an anaerobic capsule

measuring air pressure dominates the lower section, with another

identical anaerobic capsule underneath it to maximize sensitivity to the

slightest change in air pressure.

Three dual-purpose crowns on the case band

provide power to, and allow setting of, the

proprietary Breva movement. On the

left at 9 o’clock, a two-position

crown is dedicated to winding

the watch and setting the time.

On the top right at 2 o’clock,

a knurled exterior ring adjusts

the barometric pressure scale,

while an inner pusher adjusts

the position of the altitude

indication.

At 4 o’clock, a second crown

on the right has a knurled locking

ring that rotates 90° to lock/unlock an

air valve. When unlocked, the valve opens

and allows a small amount of air to equalize

air pressure inside the case with the exterior

air pressure. Longevity and reliability of the

timepiece are maximized by means of an osmotic

Teflon membrane that filters any moisture from any

air before it enters the movement. Just above the

crown, a red indicator on the dial marked ‘SEALED’

warns when the valve is unlocked.

Louis Moinet’s Derrick is a world first, combining a tourbillon with a working oil derrick. This unique device, visible over a large part of the petroleum blue dial, is in constant motion, completing its cycle every 15

seconds. Its rocking lever is made entirely of brushed aluminium.

Crafted in a limited edition of 12, the exclusive DERRICK tourbillon movement is hand-wound and beats at a cadence of 21,600 vibrations per hour. One particularly striking technical characteristic is the spectacular

visibility of the winding mechanism through the case-back. The “octopus” spring plays three roles by acting as pull-out piece spring, lever spring and click spring.

DERRICK Tourbillon is presented in an exceptional 18K white gold case. Composed of 59 different parts, it is equipped with the Louis Moinet crown guard, incorporating the stem in such a way as to enable easy

Alkoun Magazine had the great pleasure to find out more about the brand’s latest collection “My Journey” in an exclusive interview with Ivanka Trump.

How did you first develop an interest in Jewellery?

A: On my 21st birthday my mother gave me a beautiful diamond necklace that is obviously very special to me. I still wear it frequently and it was definitely the piece that sparked my interest in fine jewellery.

What is your philosophy behind “Ivanka Trump Fine Jewellery”?

A: Traditional elegance with a youthful edge.

You have recently launched a new collection; can you tell us more about it?

A: In 2013 we launched my Journey jewellery series. The Journey is inspired by my passion for travel, architecture and design. Each collection is directly influenced by a personal favourite location around the globe. Within the four new collections customers will travel to New York, Greece, France and Scotland. I also really wanted to focus on day-to-night jewellery. I’m always on the go and I love being able to wear pieces that easily transition from the office to dinner.

Did you also create a limited edition within this particular collection?

A: I did not, but in 2012 we expanded into colour for the first time with emeralds in my Lao Tong special edition collection.

From the collection, which has proven to be most popular? And why do you think so?

A: My Patras collection is our first full colour collection. It’s incredibly exciting that we’ve expanded from the neutral black and white palate we’ve been known for since inception and added another dimension to the brand.

What has been your proudest achievement so far with the brand?

A: I’m extremely proud of the growth my company has seen since we launched in 2007. I’m especially proud of our global presence with a boutique in Beijing and around the world with retailers in the Middle East, Caribbean and Asia.

Throughout your many travels and experiences, what or who has been your biggest inspiration?

A: I’m always inspired by the architectural designs of our global portfolio and saw an opportunity to apply the same concept to create memorable art deco jewellery by capturing a sense of fine workmanship, tradition and luxury.

Being a successful entrepreneur and being part of different businesses, must take quite a toll on you. How do you manage to take time out and relax?

A: I’m fortunate to have a very supportive and equally ambitious husband, but our family is most important to both of us. Proximity is key - nothing beats living close enough to the office where I can run home in between meetings for a few precious moments with my children. I have learned to become incredibly efficient!

There are many young women out there who aspire to be as successful as you have become. What words of wisdom can you give all the women out there?

A: As a businesswoman there is a need to constantly reinvent myself through creativity, innovation and continued personal and professional growth. Ask questions! You can’t be an expert at everything and asking intelligent questions demonstrates your desire to learn and grow. It only makes you better.

Brazil is one of the few countries in the world that has it all, tropical islands; lush rainforests, marvelous cities and picture-perfect beaches set the scene for the great Brazilian adventure. It is no wonder that we all wish to travel to this fascinating destination at least once in our lives. There is so much to explore and it is evident that Brazil has something for all of us to enjoy. Beginning with the Brazilian beats in Rio de Janerio’s streets, to the wonderful tropical forests of the amazon, following through to some of the world’s untouched white sandy beaches; there is no doubt you will fall in love with this country.

Brazil offers big adventures for travelers with budgets large and small. There’s horseback riding and wildlife watching in the Pantanal, kayaking flooded forests in the Amazon, ascending rocky cliff tops to panoramic

views, whale watching off the coast, surfing stellar

breaks off palm-fringed beaches and snorkeling

crystal-clear rivers or coastal reefs, all are part of the

great Brazilian experience.

One cannot fail to mention one of Brazil’s most

famous celebrations, the Carnaval. It storms through

the country’s cities and towns with hip-shaking samba

and frevo (music and dance style), dazzling costumes

and parties that last until sun up, but Brazilians hardly

limit their revelry to a few weeks of the year. Festas

(festivals) happen throughout the year, and provide a

window into Brazil’s incredible diversity. The streets

are carpeted with flowers during Semana Santa (Holy

Week), while in the north, Bumba Meu Boi blends

indigenous, African and Portuguese folklore.

Wherever there’s music, that carefree lust for life tends

to appear – whether dancing with cariocas (residents

of Rio) at Rio’s atmospheric samba clubs or following

powerful drumbeats through the streets of Salvador.

There’s the dance hall forró of the Northeast, twirling

carimbó music of the Amazon, scratch-skilled DJs of

São Paulo and an endless variety of regional sounds

that extends from the twangy country music of the

sunbaked sertanejo to the hard-edged reggae of

Maranhão.

Simply put, the beaches, the music, the wildlife and not

to mention its people tempt travelers to never want

Sao Paulo’s work-oriented vocation attracted huge contingents of immigrants after the turn of the 19th century. As a consequence, the capital of the state of Sao Paulo is by far the most ethnically diverse city in Brazil, including the largest community of people of Japanese descent outside Japan, the largest population of Italian descendants outside Italy and a significant Arab community fueled mostly by Lebanese and Syrian immigration. There are one million people of German stock and, as well, sizable Chinese, Armenian, Lithuanian, Greek, Syrian, Korean, Polish and Hungarian communities.

Sao Paulo hosts an estimated 100 different ethnicities that have helped put up the country’s major economy, responsible for 12,26 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.

Although it is an inevitable business destination, it is not all about work for the paulistanos: Sao Paulo is a high-profile cultural centre that displays a wide range of options, from various top-flight concerts and exhibitions to a colossal gastronomy scene of more than 12,000 restaurants. Three of Brazil’s most powerful clubs are from Sao Paulo: old-time rivals Corinthians, Palmeiras and São Paulo, who combine for an impressive 14 Campeonato Brasileiro titles. Sao Paulo’s home ground, the Morumbi, is the city’s biggest stadium and was one of the venues of the maiden FIFA Club World Club, in 2000, while the city-owned Pacaembu, which also houses a phenomenal Football Museum, hosted six matches at the 1950 FIFA World Cup Brazil. Palmeiras own its home ground, the Palestra Italia.

Of the three biggest clubs in Sao Paulo, the only one which previously did not own a stadium with the necessary size and infrastructure to host games was the city’s best-supported side: Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. Yet this long-yearned for dream of the Corinthians faithful will finally come true ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the shape of the Arena de Sao Paulo. The stadium works are also expected to boost development in the Eastern Zone, which is one of Sao Paulo’s most deprived areas and home to nearly four million people, as well as ensuring hundreds of workers gain professional qualifications. A total of close to 6,000 people have been employed either directly or indirectly over the course of the construction process.

The Arena de Sao Paulo has been chosen to host the Opening Match of Brazil 2014 and will also welcome five other encounters, including one semi-final.

Recife – The “Venice” of Brazil

Although Recife is the fourth-largest city in Brazil, it is less modern and cosmopolitan than its more famous counterparts. Recife and its environs have only recently become a tourist destination, so visitors are often a novelty for its inhabitants, especially those of the neighbouring fishing villages. Recife’s name was derived from the Portuguese word for reef, referring simply to the city’s situation behind a long and protective coastal reef. Recife is a major port city, and much of its energy and culture has its source in the constant influx and outflow of trade. High rises, colonial churches, and markets quilt the city with a mix of old and new. Often called the Venice of Brazil for its many canals, bridges, and tiny one-way streets, Recife is a wonderful city in which to wander about, letting chance provide a memorable discovery or two.

Recife’s deep cultural roots are notable, and its traditional cultural activities should not be over-looked. Recife is one of Brazil’s richest places to explore folk art and craft, including music, dance, sculpture, and painting. If travellers wish to opt for a more relaxing holiday, the charming and far more tranquil historic town of Olinda lies on Recife’s northern edge. Many visitors, in fact opt to stay in Olinda and visit Recife during the day, or venture into Recife for the animated nightlife.

The Exquisite Villa GrazioliIt is as if it were still possible to hear the evocative noise of carriages that used to

transport their noble passengers up here to enjoy breathtaking views of Rome, among

the surviving secular trees of the long imposing driveway that leads to Villa Grazioli,

where time seems to have stopped. Villa Grazioli is today a gorgeous hotel in Frascati

(Italy) on the hills around Rome, but more than that it is a treasure chest of history, art

Dating back to the Renaissance period (it was completed in 1580), the names of its

owners throughout centuries witness the importance of the building. Borghese, Peretti,

Odescalchi are only some of the princes, dukes and noble families who owned it.

Many illustrious guests had the pleasure to stay here: in 1776 Alphonse Donatien

Francois, more known as the Marquis de Sade, wrote in his diary that Villa Grazioli was

the best among all villas in Frascati. He had been particularly impressed by the beauty

of its frescoes, so real that one “... could not help touching them”.

Actually, many prestigious Italian painters worked here and created astonishing frescoes

that a visitor can still admire today. But it is above all in the so called Galleria del Pannini

decade, Benfica ranked with Inter Milan as the best side in Europe. They reached the European Cup Final three more times, and thrice Eusébio was its leading scorer. Aside from claiming the Ballon d’Or for Europe’s best player in 1965, he also finished as runner-up for the award in 1962 and in 1966, when he lost it by a single vote to Bobby Charlton.

His nine goals in the 1966 World Cup had made him so well-known globally, that by the end of it Madame Tussaud’s had added him to their collection of waxworks. Inter Milan tried to buy him, offering to pay him 40 times his salary at Benfica, and going so far as to get Eusébio’s wife to sign a contract as his proxy. The deal was scotched, however, by Portugal’s strident ruler, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, who forbade him from playing abroad. Eusébio was never to grace a World Cup again.

He left Benfica in 1975, and although his right knee was beginning to require constant treatment, managed to play on for several more years in North America, even winning a championship there with Toronto Metros-Croatia in 1976. After he hung up his boots for good in 1980 he became an ambassador for both Benfica and the Portugal team.

Although he remained enthusiastic about the prospects for football, especially in Africa, he felt that he had played during the sport’s greatest era, against players who, like him, had learned their skills in the streets with balls made from rolled-up socks or newspaper. “I respect the football of today,” he said, “but the football of my time was better. Football today is just commercial.”

In 1992 a statue of him was erected outside Benfica’s ground, the Estádio da Luz, and in polls he was regularly voted Portugal’s greatest footballer, and one of the 10 best ever to have played the game. Late in life Eusébio’s recollections were tinged with sadness for the one competition he had failed to win. “I was the best player in the world, top scorer in the world,” he said. “I did everything, except win a World Cup.”

A Tribute to “The Black Panther”

of Football

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, who recently passed away aged 71 of heart failure, was the first great African footballer, and ranked alongside Pelé as one of the finest strikers in the history of the sport. He was voted Europe’s player of the year in 1965 and representing Portugal, was the

leading goal scorer in the 1966 World Cup.

Eusébio emerged from his neighbourhood streets in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, to become

a world-renowned talent and voice of fair play

during football’s golden age of the 1960s and

1970s. In his 15-year duration (1960-1975) with

the Portuguese team Benfica, he won 11 league

titles and in 715 games had scored 727 goals. His

tally still remains a record for the club. He was

also then the Portugal’s leading scorer, netting 41

times in 64 matches. British journalists dubbed

him “The Black Panther” and “The Black Pearl”.

To the Portuguese, he was simply “O Rei” – “The King”.Eusébio first made an impact in a friendly against Santos, Pele’s club, scoring a hat trick as a substitute. By 1962 he was a regular in the Benfica team, which already contained five other players from Portugal’s colonial outposts. It was not so much his pace, which marked him out as his phenomenal acceleration, and his thunderous right-footed shot. For the remainder of the

On 13th January 2014, Real Madrid’s midfielder

Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d’Or for

a second time throughout his professional football

career. A well-deserved award as each season the

player’s performance has kept on improving since

his first appearance in Manchester United in 2000.

But how did Ronaldo get to become the 10th multiple

winner of the Ballon d’Or? The great player began his

journey to stardom at the tender age of eighteen, when he

first set foot in Manchester United’s Carrington training

complex. Ronaldo’s speed and skill were evident at the

Estadio Jose Alvalde in a friendly against Manchester

United for Sporting Lisbon in August 2003, displaying every

last ounce of potential from the natural talents gifted to

him and an outstanding performance, which ultimately

sealed a £12.24m transfer to Old Trafford days later.

It was in Manchester that the Portuguese sought out the

expertise of a man by the name of Mike Clegg - the Old

Trafford club’s power development coach between 2000

and 2011 - as he began his quest to not only become the

greatest player on earth, but an athlete with no equal in

the modern game. “He was a lively lad,” Clegg told BBC

Sport. The young player came across as a really determined

boy and Ferguson and Carlos really liked that about him.

Ronaldo was a keen observer. A vacancy had arisen to

join that elite group following the departure of David

Beckham - another member of the ‘gym club’ - to Real

Madrid, and though his English was limited at best and

his frame more featherweight boxer than sculpted

Adonis, Ronaldo wasted little time in turning his vision

into reality. Ronaldo’s success not only comes from

his natural talent and remarkable skills on the pitch,

but also from behind the scenes, with hours spent in

the gym. His physical evolution incorporated all facets

of athletic performance, with additional sprint and

reaction work polishing up his raw, genetic gifts. But it

was the mastering of strength workouts and Olympic

lifts - total body exercises performed in an explosive

manner at pace - that were behind the development of a

muscular physique that has gone on to adorn billboards

and magazine covers across the world. Deadlifts and

power cleans were two favourites in his gym routine,

with the level of resistance and speed of execution

slowly increased over his near six years in Manchester.

The hard work paid off tremendously as Ronaldo

lifted a hat trick of Premier League titles between

2007 and 2009, as well as the Champions League in

2008 - a success which saw him named World Player

of the Year for the first time that same year. In

Ronaldo’s mind, his time at Old Trafford was done.

In 2009 his transfer to Real Madrid proved to break

yet another world record with a £80m transfer fee.

Trophies have been harder to come by in Spain, with

Ronaldo winning one La Liga, one Copa del Rey and the

Supercopa de Espana in his four years there to date,

but on an individual basis he continues to surpass his

own remarkable standards. In 2013 alone, the Portugal

captain scored 66 goals in 55 appearances and is

already Madrid’s fifth-highest goal scorer of all-time.

Ronaldo’s determination and hard work have led him to

the Ballon d’Or for a second time, and this is not the end

of the road for this remarkable athlete, who improves

each season. We can still expect great things from the

twenty-eight year old Portuguese football superstar.

The Origins of Bull Fighting

Bull fighting (Corrida de toros in Spanish) in Spain seems to have its origins during the 8 long centuries of the Spanish War of Reconquest (711-1492 A.D.) when the knights of both the Moors and Christians would organize hunting competitions as a respite from killing each other and they soon realized that of all the prey the Iberian bull offered the greatest challenge as unlike other animals it preferred to die fighting rather than fleeing.

The history of bull fighting recalls that the first real bullfight, or corrida, took place in 1133 at Vera, Logroño in honour of the coronation of King Alfonso VIII. From then on they became a popular pass time at many important events and continued after the wars of reconquest had finished offering noblemen an outlet to demonstrate the zeal and daring with which he defeated the Moors. King Philip II however found the spectacle disgusting and enlisted the help of Pope Pius V to get it banned by papel decree.

Bulls also played an important role in the religious ceremonies of the Iberian tribes living in Spain in prehistoric times. While religious bull cults go back to Iberians, it was Greek and Roman influences that converted it into a spectacle. During the Middle Ages it was a diversion for the aristocracy to torear on horseback-a style known as suerte de cañas.

In the 18th century this tradition was more or less abandoned and the poorer population invented bull fighting on foot. Francisco Romero was a key figure in laying down the rules for the new sport.

By 1726 they were ready to adopt their first bull-fighting hero in the form of Francisco Romero from Ronda. He was a man of humble origins who became the first professional bullfighter in Spain. With him the corrida developed into more of an art form. He introduced the estoque or sword, and the muleta or small cape used in the last part of the fight as it is more easily wielded.

Bull fighting is certainly one of the best known although at the same time most controversial-Spanish popular customs. This Fiesta could not exist without the Toro bravo, a species of bull of an ancient race that is only conserved in Spain. Formerly this bull’s forebears, the primitive urus, were spread out over wide areas of the world. Many civilizations revered them; the bull cults on the Greek island of Crete are very well known. The Bible tells of sacrifices of bulls in honour of divine justice.

Today’s bullfight is much as it was developed in the time of Romero. Normally six bulls and three matadors are required for an afternoon’s corrida. The three matadors dressed in their suit of lights (trajes de luces) enter the arena accompanied

by their banderilleros (matador’s assistants) and picadors and the strains of a traditional paso doble.

A corrida starts with the paseillo, when everybody involved in the bullfight enters the ring and presents themselves to the president and public.

Two alguacilillos on horseback look up to the president’s box and symbolically ask for the keys to the puerta de los toriles. Behind that door the bulls are waiting. When the door opens and the first bull enters the spectacle starts for real. It consists of three parts, called tercios (“thirds”), the separation of which is signalled with a bugle call. There are three toreros-bullfighters (the better-known word “toreador” is actually never used in modern Spanish) in each corrida, each being allotted two bulls. In the first tercio the bullfighter uses the capote, a rather large cape that is a pinkish-mauve colour on one side and yellow on the other.

Now the two picadors enter on horseback, armed with a sort of lance. The second tercio is la suerte de banderillas. Three banderilleros must stick a pair of banderillas into the charging bull’s back. In the final suerte suprema the bullfighter uses the muleta, a small red cloth draped from a stick. He has to show his mastery to dominate the bull, and to establish an artistic symbiosis between man and beast. Finally the corrida ends with the torero using his sword to kill the bull.

Bullfighting has gotten much safer over the years, especially with the introduction of padded protection for the horses and special medical surgical units for the toreros. For toreros, the most dangerous part of the corrida is when they perform the estocada. With no protection, one error can cost life of the matador. Cogidas is the word used when the torero is “gored” by the bull.

Bullfighting has generated controversy in many parts of the world, including Spain, Portugal, Peru, Mexico and Ecuador. It was even recently prohibited in Catalonia, an autonomous region of Spain. Supporters argue that it is a cultural tradition and an important source of tourism while animal rights advocates consider it a blood sport that tortures both bulls and horses. However, it is part of Spanish tradition and lengthy historical culture, would it be unjust to ban the Corrida completely?

يومنا هذا ال تزال مصارعة الثيران إرث يضرب بجذوه في أذهان األسبان ، و ينظر لمصارعة الثيران على أنها رمزاً للشخصية األسبانية ،

ورغم أن األيام التي كانت فيها هذه الرياضة أكثر شعبية من كرة القدم قد ولت منذ زمن طويل إال إن مشجعيها اليزالون ينتشرون

و تشكل هذه الرياضة خطر كبير على من يمارسونها وعلي الحيوان ذاته ، حيث تتم فيها المواجهة بين المصارع والثور في حلبة

على مرأى ومسمع من الناس ، ويشترط أن يكون الثور قويًا ضخمًا صحيح البنية وقرونه حادة للغاية وتتم المواجهة بينه وبين

المصارع دون وجود حماية كافية لجسد المصارع الذي يجب أن يكون لديه الشجاعة والمهارة الكافية لمواجهة الثيران . ويرتدي

المصارع حلة مطرزة غالية الثمن تصل في بعض األحيان إلى 20 ألف دوالر. ويتعرض المصارعون لخطر االصابة والوفاة أحيانًا. أما الثور

فال تنتهي المباراة اال بقتله ، ثم تأتي البغال ويكون عددها حوالي 4 لجر الثور للخارج ويكون الجزارون بانتظاره ليتم تقطيع لحمه

ثم يباع. وتسبق المباريات عادة قديمة ترافقها الخطورة أيضًا وهي إطالق الثيران من حظائرها لتصل إلى حلبة المصارعة ويجري

الناس أمامهم وهم يرتدون محارم حمراء اللون لالعتقاد بأن اللون األحمر يثير الثور، ويتسابق الناس في الجري أمام الثيران حتى

تصل إلى الحلبة ، الجدير بالذكر أن هناك إصابات تحدث بين الناس من جراء ذلك ، إال أنهم يحبون المشاركة باعتبار ذلك دليل على

الشجاعة ودرب من دروب اإلثارة والمغامرة.

وأثارت مصارعة الثيران مؤخراً الكثير من ردود األفعال المضادة الرافضة لها، وخصوصًا من جانب جماعات الرفق بالحيوان التي تنظر

لهذه الرياضة الشعبية بوصفها تعذيب للثيران وقتل لها بطريقة وحشية فخرجت المظاهرات التي تنادي بوقف ممارسة تلك

الرياضة الشعبية من أجل حقوق الحيوان. ولكن بعض األسبان ومن بينهم الكاتالونيون ، ال يشعرون أنهم معنيون باالتهامات

التي توجه إليهم حول قضية القسوة عل ى الحيوانات. فمن وجهة نظرهم يرون أن الثيران تربى وتعيش في ظل طمأنينة الريف

ثم تموت ميتة شريفة وسط الحلبة .ولكن البرلمان الكاتالوني في العام المنصرم قام بمنع ممارسة رياضة مصارعة الثيران
