Sara L Warber of the University of Michigan has studied the benefits humans experience when they get outin nature.

Physical: People tend to be more active when out and about, Warber says. When people repeatedly go out forwalks or just enjoy the outside, they tend to move more, conferring benefits on the immune and endocrinesystems. Blood pressure can also improve.

Mental: Thinking improves when people experience nature. They begin to have a sense of well-being, lessstress, and less depression. They might also recover more quickly from stress. Group walks are especiallyhelpful.

Emotional: People in parks , camp settings, or group activity, like bird watching, experience more positiveemotions.

Spiritual: Spending time in nature gives adults a sense of transcendence, serenity and tranquility.

Writer Michael Grothaus tried his own experiment to discover if his city spirit could be calmed by parks.Turned out it was. He wrote in Fast Company that after dedicating no less than one hour in nature, heimmediately felt less stressed. It was as if the parks acted like a cocoon, sheltering him from city noises andhis own racing thoughts.

After two weeks, he found her overall mood improved.

By the third week, he felt more creative.

On the fourth week, he was surprised and excited to realize his memory improved and he no longer neededto write out a list of tasks.

Warber said everyone could benefit from an hour of nature immersion each day.

Humans Get Lift FromNature

"I figure, if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one."

Calamity Jane, the self-styled heroine and cowgirl of the Wild West, said that in her sensational1890 autobiography, "Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane, By Herself." It was a pamphlet-sizestory she dictated to a printer, but eager fans paid several pennies to re-live her tales of the West.

She was born Martha Jane Canary, the oldest of six children. Her father was an inveterate gambler, and her mother was a part-time prostitute. By the time she was 12, both her parents were dead, andshe had to support her siblings.

She grew up fast. She earned money as a cook, dishwasher, dance-hall girl, and even a prostitute.Along the way, she took on a male persona. She chewed and spat tobacco, guzzled booze, cussed andbragged about her exploits with equal audacity. She was a crack shot and a fearless rider, shootingfrom the saddle like a cowboy.

Part of many Indian and Calvary conflicts, she claimed her heroics earned her the nickname Calamity.

She met Wild Bill Hickok on a wagon-train from Wyoming to Deadwood, S. Dakota. Some say theywere romantically involved. When Hickok was murdered August 2, 1876, while playing poker,Calamity was devastated.

For the next 25 years, she traveled from state to state. Still a sharp-shooter, she joined Buffalo Bill'sWild West Show. Her insatiable thirst for whiskey got her fired.

She returned to the Black Hills but soon discovered the Old West had moved on.

Calamity Jane died in a motel room not far from Deadwood on August 1, 1903. Her dying requestwas to make her death date August 2 and to bury her next to Wild Bill Hickok.

“Words conceived in your heart will be formed by your tongue, and by speaking them out of yourmouth you will release their ability to either create negativity or positive creative energy; these arethe words that will create your life each day.” Unknown

You know how I love to hear about people who have learned to use their minds to improve their livesand overcome obstacles. One of my favorite true stories is about a remarkable man who overcamewhat many of us would consider one of the most debilitating of physical handicaps. I’ve written abouthim before and if you’ve taken part in the weekly Power Groups, you will be familiar with TonyMelendez. Like me, you may have wondered about his present life.

Tony was born in Chino, California, the same town where I grew up, and attended the same church,Our Lady of Guadalupe. I didn’t know him because he is much younger than I. He was born inNicaragua then moved to the U.S. when he was a year old. His father died early on. Tony’s motherhad taken thalidomide, a drug to calm morning sickness, which we now know causes birth defects.Tony was born without arms.

Having no arms didn’t stop Tony from accomplishing his musical dream, however. He started playingthe guitar at the little church in Chino, then his big break came right after he played “Never be theSame” for Pope John Paul II, during his Los Angeles papal visit in 1987. And as many of you mayhave seen the T.V. ceremonies celebrating Pope John Paul’s life which included a rerun of thatmoment, the Pope embraced and kissed Tony on the cheek; he told Tony to

It was clear that the Pope was truly touched by the manwho had turned a handicap into music.

National Television aired it all and that is the way the world first of heard of Tony Melendez, theremarkable guitarist who has no fingers, hands, or arms. However, he was blessed with feet and toes, and it was with those toes that he played the guitar for The Pope. He uses his right foot for pickingand his left foot for the fretting on his 12 string instrument. His musical album debut came inMarch of that year at the age of twenty-six. He specialized in love ballads and gospel. Today Tonyis married, has children and lives in Branson, Mo., where he performs.

Tony is an excellent example of what the empowered living philosophy embraces. The mind is apowerful tool, waiting to carry out our commands. Every day we give our minds the commands thatwill determine what kind of day we will have and what kind of life we will live. Here are a fewguidelines.

1. Check your thoughts the first thing in the morning and be sure they are positive.2. Only allow positive, life giving thoughts to exist in your mind.3. Surround yourself with positive, upbeat people4. Read and watch uplifting, mind developing material5. Be hopeful but take action; don’t sit back and wait for something to happen automatically.6. Develop a love for people, smile and be friendly7. Always go to bed with good thoughts

“A man is literally , his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.” –James
