Migration• Improved API for migration

MinRole• Previous versions of SharePoint, administrator determines a box’s role by
choosing the services that run.
• Roles in 2016 are defined in code instead of documentation
• Automatic optimization for chosen role
• This new method helps patching be more targeted
• Health Analyzer will check server against MS’s definition for role

Patching• Fewer MSIs and MSPs and Updates are smaller and execute faster
• Translation: Reduced number of patch components
• B2B updates are online with zero downtime

Boundaries & Limits• Content database support moves into Terabytes instead of Gigabytes (exact
figure TBD)
• List view threshold will go past 5000
• Max file size increased to 10 GB
• Search index, site collection, and other increases coming

Identity and Authentication• SAML claims becomes the preferred identity provider due to better
compatibility with cloud
• Windows identity remains supported, but the move is toward a SAML future.

Hybrid Deployment• Hybrid configuration wizard, includes pre-req installer
• Deployment automation for hybrid services
• Promoted hybrid services: search, user profiles, office graph, e-
discovery, compliance

User Profile Service• UPSync is no longer built into SharePoint. Now you have to put a separate
server up if you want to have the old FIM experience……….
• AD Sync is the only native-SharePoint method now!

Cloud Search Service Application• Unified result sources from both cloud and on-prem indexes
• Office Graph now looks into on-prem content
• Delve can now be used with on-prem data!

• Improvements to Distributed Cache
