Neighbourhood Forum.Working PartyThe Government’s Localism Act of 2011provided an opportunity for Parishes,Resident’s organisations and communities toassemble a Neighbourhood Forum.Formed from a diverse group of residents a

Forum would number a minimum of 21 personswho would have to consult, study andeventually agree on a written Plan. This would include a map of the proposed

area. Once approved by the local Council thePlan would be subject to a local referendumarranged and paid for by the Council. If carried through a Forum would give the

community statutory power to ‘guide’ localdevelopment plans including regeneration andconservation. Under the umbrella of the HadleyWood Association a working party has now metwith a Planning officer atEnfield Council and learned more about the

process. It is clear from these preliminarydiscussions that the formation of aNeighbourhood Forum would involve a greatdeal of work. However in the long term a Forumwould have more input into the futuredevelopment of Hadley Wood rather than beingin the current position of having no input at all.The working party has elected Esther Kurlandas its Chairman and is meeting again soon. Atthis stage the objective of the Working Party isto decide if the community has enough ability, manpower and energy to create a Forum andwhether the community is likely to benefit fromsuch an organisation. If that decision is taken, the next step would be a major consultationexercise within our Community.Interested residents should contact

members of the working party via the HadleyWood Association on 02084497193 or [email protected]

Hadley Wood’s newtrees.Residents in Parkgate Avenue andCrescent, Covert way, Greenbrook andBeech Hill Avenue will have noticed manynew young trees planted alongside theroads. They all look healthy and haveclearly been planted by people who knowwhat they are doing. These trees are much appreciated by

residents and are a credit to Enfield’s streetscene policies and their Regeneration andEnvironment staff. We emailed AndyRobinson Enfield’s Senior ArboriculturalOfficer to express our appreciation and hisreply is printed in the Letters section. We have also been on the receiving end

of some saplings from Sustrans the

national Charity which looks after UK’s pathand cycleways. Sustrans it was whoupgraded the path running from the stationup alongside the railway and through thewoods to Waggon Road. As they had to cutdown a few small trees in the process theyvery generously donated fifteen youngsaplings including Flowering Cherry, Oakand Beech. These were planted with thehelp of the Sustrans team and its volunteerson a hot day in early April. Dotted about theHadley Wood Association grounds theylook very attractive already. Thanks go toSustrans and to the volunteers especiallylocal resident Dominic without whoseherculean efforts the planting would neverhave been finished.HWA

Marathon efforts. At least two local residents ran in the Londonmarathon this year raising money forcharities. Sen Al Ahmadi ran again, this timeraising money for Chicken Shed. Sen is wellknown amongst local runners. She startedthe Hadley Wood Running Club and is now aqualified running coach. This year she waslucky enough to receive from Chicken Sheda position in the Green Start section. Thisgives runners a much more civilized startingpoint, an easy access to the loos and thedoubtful pleasure of being with manycelebrities. When she had finished taking‘selfies’ with Michael Owen, Amy Willerton,Michel Roux and our rowing gold medallists(Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins) sheran the course in 4 hours 13 minutes raising£2000 for Chicken Shed in the process.(Over the last few years Sen and herhusband Rashid have raised approximately£13000 running for charities!). Julie Nortonwas also running. I asked her for somedetails. She replies…

‘This was my fourth London marathon, this time raising money for Parkinson’s UK.My father has Parkinson’s and I wanted to raise money for this charity in the hopethat one day a cure might be found for such a debilitating disease. I have so farraised over £1,500. I completed themarathon in 3 hours 45 minutes after eightmonths of training and approximately 1800 miles covered. A marathon is not

Meadow project. If you walk from the HWA Car park up thefield and turn left along the path through thetree line leading to the bridge over therailway you come to a clearing. To your leftlies a small field. This is the site of a jointventure between the HWA and HadleyWood primary school to create a wildflowermeadow. The plan is to spend the springand summer months recording what isactually growing there at the moment andto see whether the field supports much beeor butterfly life. Year 4 children from theschool will be doing this on a weekly basiskeeping a record of what they have found

and seen. In the meantime soil analysis willbe carried out to measure acidity/alkalinity,nitrogen and phosphate concentrations sothat wildflower seeds appropriate for theseconditions can be planted into anexperimental lower section of the field.Comparisons of flower and insect life in thenew (seeded) and old sections (untouched)can then be made. Wildflowers do not dowell if the soil is fertile or fertilized. Howeverlocal knowledge suggests that this field hasnot been farmed for at least 50 years. Thiswould be in favour of wildflower survival.Wildflowers other enemy is grass. This hasto be regularly cut, the cuttings disposed of

and if necessary some centimetres of topsoil removed from the experimental lowersection of the field. There will be noherbicides used. Making a wild flowermeadow is not an easy process but withsteady care to keep the grass at bay thereis every chance of a slow conversion of this field to a meadow. It might take a fewyears. It might end up looking like this! (seephoto left). If there are any experts orenthusiasts in Hadley Wood who would like to be involved please let me know. Rod Armstrong Tel: 020 8449 5924

The Hadley Wood Dance Centre wasestablished in the Hadley Wood AssociationCentre 46 years ago. I have now been thePrincipal of the school for over 30 years andto mark this anniversary 135 pupils, ranging

in age from four years to adult, performedthe full- length ballet of The Nutcracker on21st and 22nd March at The WyllyottsTheatre, Potters Bar to very supportive andenthusiastic audiences. All the pupils

thoroughly enjoyed their theatrical experienceand, as a result of the three performances,we have been able to send a donation of£3125 to the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Janice Salmon

The Wimbledon TennisChampionshipsI am a self-confessed tennis nut and lookforward every year to Wimbledon or TheChampionships as it is often called. Indeed,I could say that they are the highlight of thesummer for me.On my retirement from the City, I was

fortunate to be accepted into the ranks ofthe Honorary Stewards (HS) after somerigorous questioning and on site training. My day starts at 08.00 sharp when I join thelarge team of stewards in Wimbledon Parkwhere the day queue for tickets is formed. Some spectators will have queuedovernight with others arriving early in themorning hoping to secure a ticket for amajor show court that day. Most people arecontent to buy a Ground Pass which givesaccess to all the outside courts and alimited number of unreserved seats onthree show courts. The queue will have been managed by

Honorary Stewards overnight, and some ofour team start at 06.00 in order to assist the

early queue management. A big team ofDay Stewards made up of young universitystudents bring enthusiastic support to theoverall effort. As the trains bring peoplefrom far and wide, the queue quickly growsand in no time the numbers can swell to10,000 or more. Naturally, good weatherencourages people to come to Wimbledon, but if a certain Scottish gentleman happensto be playing that day, then the numbersswell exponentially.Working with the queues outside the

ground sounds like a rather unattractivepart of the job – in fact the opposite is true. One meets people from all around theworld who share the same enthusiasm forthe game. The atmosphere is unique in myexperience, with everyone well behavedand in high spirits in the anticipation ofseeing some tennis later in the day. Manyof the fans are seasoned Wimbledonvisitors and prefer to queue for tickets ratherthan chance their luck in the official publicballot. I would probably award theAustralian visitors the prize for the bestparty makers! The role of the Honorary

Stewards is to marshal thequeues and provide assistanceand information to visitors. TheService Stewards from H.M.Forces and EmergencyServices perform a different butvital role and they are allexceptional people who arecommitted to do their very best. After a very quick lunch, a

posting to one of the showcourts is the reward for themorning’s hard work. Duringservice breaks, spectatorscome and go from the courtsand occasionally people moveduring play. This presents aconstant challenge to keeppeople in their seats to respectboth the players and spectators.Mobile phones provide thelargest headache and thebiggest source of irritation to

fellow spectators, and while the vastmajority are happy to switch them off or putthem on silent mode, there are always oneor two serial offenders who we have to dealwith. Tact and diplomacy are as ever theway forward and it is heartening to have thegratitude of other spectators after dealingwith these types of situations. The Stewardsare required to stay until the end of play ontheir courts which could be 9.00 p.m. or even until 11.00 p.m. if a match isrunning late on Centre Court. With extremeexhaustion and aching legs and feet, I drivehome, collapse into bed and then rise again at 05.45 to start the next day. TheChampionships seem to reach a climax onthe middle Saturday and the secondMonday, after which the queues start toreduce. This is because the singlesmatches are concentrated mainly on CentreCourt, for which there are no on-day salesafter the second Wednesday. The reason isa long-standing policy borne out of concernfor the Club’s neighbours over thepotentially enormous crowds which couldresult – particularly with a British finalist – ifCentre Court tickets were still sold on thegate. At this stage it feels a little as though the

party is already over. Some of my fellowHonorary Stewards bid farewell then andreturn to their homes in various corners ofthe UK. Not all these people are retired likeme and many have full time demandingjobs. I meet people from all walks of lifeincluding many from the professions – allwith one thing in common – a love of tennis.I particularly like the discipline and order ofthe whole Championships which run likeclockwork. This does not happen bychance but through the meticulousplanning and the considerable efforts of somany people. Many of the HonoraryStewards return year after year and, ifinvited to take part again, I will certainly doso. It is seriously hard work but great fun,and I am fortunate to have met some reallyoutstanding people.Paul Wenham

My trip to South Africa April2014Some of my neighbours kindly sponsored me to raisemoney for the school Rugby tour to South Africa backin the Autumn, and I can’t believe I’ve had theexperience already. We were two teams raring to gointo battle against the strong lads from the heat ofSouth Africa. On Friday 4th April, we set off on our journey to

Johannesburg, to then get another internal flight toCape Town. Straight after we got off the plane we didn’teven go to our hotel. We left straight to conquer themighty Table Mountain. We spent four more days here, including a match against some of the township lads.THEY WERE MASSIVE!! All of the games except onewere bare foot, which upheld traditions in all SA BoysSchools. We then spent some time in the local town. This was

truly an amazing experience, meeting the townshippeople. Everyone saw a new light and the people wemet inspired us. After Cape Town, we flew off to Durban to encounter

the mighty Zulus. When we got there we met the mostsmiley and welcoming warriors in the world from thebeautiful plains in the Zulu cultural village, Shakaland. There we learnt many of the Zulu ways of life. It reallytaught us that the way we live is not the only way andthat we have to have open minds about learning fromthese different cultures. Also in Durban we went to a safari park and came face

to face with the great beasts of South Africa. This tripreally taught me new things about the world and thathow we live isn’t always the best way. When I was in thetownship, I met an amazing little girl called Buombola. Iwill never forget her. She told me something thatchanged me as a person; she told me that her oldestbrother has to fight for food to keep his family alive, butthe most amazing thing was she always had a smile onher face. That taught me something. They have probablyone of the worst places to live in the world, sometimeswithout food but they are probably still the happiestpeople in the world. Truly a humbling experience! This trip was the best thing that has ever happened

to me and I will never forget it (even though I sufferedsix stitches in my foot, it didn’t put me off one bit). George Hawkins

New Captain at HadleyWood Golf Club.Following Mike Edwards’ excellent year asCaptain the club has welcomed RobAnderson to take his place. Rob is aYorkshireman from Harrogate. Both parentswere keen golfers and thus it was that hestarted playing golf aged 14 yrs. Two yearslater his mother was offered the post ofSecretary of the Ladies Golf Union based inSt Andrews. The family moved forthwith andhis mother, a fine golfer herself, occupiedher new office overlooking the 18th greenof the Old Course at St Andrews. This wasa nice move for his parents who had metwhilst university students there in the waryears. Rob joined one of the local golf clubsin St Andrews paying an exorbitant £25.00a year for the use of all four courses (thereare now seven!) This was 1978. (‘A fewyears later’ says Rob ‘all hell broke loose’when a three pound surcharge was addedfor playing on the Old Course). Afterfinishing school Rob went to WarwickUniversity studied Maths and Economicsand after graduating moved to London tobecome a trainee chartered accountant atPeat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co, later KPMG.Marrying Sally in 1986 he set up home inTottenham and then spent four years inSydney, Australia before returning toHertfordshire. Later he co-founded his owncompany Edengene which advises largecompanies on applying innovationtechniques to grow their business. He andSally went on to have three children, theeldest two now being at university in StAndrews and at Imperial College in London, whilst the youngest is at Dame AliceOwen’s school in Potters Bar. With a strongmusical background (his two sisters are

music teachers) all thechildren sing and playvarious instruments to ahigh standard. Rob takesparticular pleasure injoining them at gigs in hisrole as drummer (‘not aproper musician’). Healso takes part in theband at the church inBarnet which he and hisfamily regularly attend.Rob joined HWGC in

1997. He is known for hissense of humour, playsoff a handicap of 6 and isa past captain of theScratch team. I askedhim whether he had anyplans for the year asCaptain. ‘Well, probably continuousimprovement rather than any radicalchange’ says Rob. ‘I want to maintain thetraditions of this great club but would like totry and make it a little more inclusive, familyfriendly and informal. I would particularlylike to see a more integrated membership

with plenty of events that allow members toget to know each other better’. He dashedoff to represent the club in a county event, and I returned home reflecting that it lookedlike being another very good year for thegolf club.Rod Armstrong

It started off, a morning like any other, whenI was in my bedroom listening to the sweettweet of the morning birds. They were sparrows, my favourite bird.

Gliding swiftly, as light as a feather, beautifulcreatures. I reached out my arm. Myfavourite one which I named Snowy cameand sat on it. I called him Snowy becauseof his strange, white wings. Suddenly, breaking the beautiful silence my Ma burstin, shouting at me to come and eatbreakfast before school. Snowy jumped offmy arm in fright. I scowled and with a groanof reply, I trudged downstairs.Sitting at the table, I devoured my food

like a hungry wolf, keen to return to thesparrows. “What’s up? “asked Ma. I didn’treply. She shook my shoulder as if she wassaying “come on tell me”. Her eyes weredeep, black, oily pools staring into mine. She turned and opened the rickety door. Asquick as a cat pouncing on its prey I racedoutside trying to catch a glimpse of Snowy.Suddenly, a screaming shout from Ma

filled the air. “Look out behind you” sheshouted frantically. I turned horrified as ashell whizzed towards me. Luckily I duckedand it sped through the back door andexploded in the hallway.Fear crept up my back like a cold hand. I

shrieked for my parents. Ma, Pa and mybrother leapt out the door. But what aboutSnowy?Quickly I raced up the half destroyed

stairs to my deserted room. Sure enoughthere sat Snowy on the windowsill. Grabbinghim gently, I went back downstairs and shotout of the house like a bullet. “Now where?”questioned Ma angrily. Together we racedout onto the streets. Everywhere werechildren screaming, doctors kneeling on theground, timbers of wood scattered here andthere like a giant skeleton. I shivered at thethought of living on the streets with no foodor water. Questions whizzed through mymind. Would our house be ok? Would thestreet get destroyed? Would I even survive?I could hear my younger brother asking

questions to himself and sobbing every nowand then. I comforted him thinking how hardit must be for him. I told him it would be okbut on the inside I wasn’t so sure…Half an hour passed and bombs were still

whizzing through the air with anger. Thensilence struck the street. Soon after that, people started coming out of brokenhouses wiping dirt from their forlorn facesand looking around in disbelief.I gazed up at the sky. The grey forbidding

clouds seemed to part and a ray ofsunshine filtered through. I reached into mypocket. A frightened creature sat on myarm, I held him up to the sun. He stretchedout his beautiful, white wings and flew intothe horizon to find a new home. I sighedheavily. What would happen to us? Wherewould our new home be?Katie Partridge. Aged 8 years.

LettersDear Editor Many thanks for the emailregarding the new trees recently plantedwithin the Hadley Wood area. The treeswere planted as part of our annual re-placement planting programme, this areaof EN4 receiving approximately 50 newtrees of the 400 we had funding for. We alsoapplied for a grant from the MayorsRELEAF scheme that resulted in a further90 trees and along with other fundingmanaged to plant a total of approximately550 trees borough wide just on thehighways in Enfield. All of the trees plantedin the EN4 area are Ornamental other than4 x Ginkos that probably fall into the Foresttype category. Although they are very slowgrowing, all trees will provide manyenvironmental ecological and socialbenefits. They will blossom and some willproduce small ornamental fruits all of whichwill benefit the wildlife and the environmentfor the area. We are keen to continue thisplanting programme in the EN4 area toreplenish stock as part of next wintersplanting programme so if any residentswould like trees in other roads please let mehave a list of sites and we will survey andsee if we can accommodate any requests. Each year I have to apply for funding fortree planting. Any evidence that our effortsare being appreciated by residents of theborough helps with acquiring the fundingrequired to allow us to ensure Enfield'sstreets remain tree lined for many years tocome.
