Profile. Russell Edwards In a small place like Hadley Wood it comesas a surprise to discover just how manywriters have graced our leafy suburb. WithAnthony Trollope, Kingsley Amis, WilliamBooth and probably many others includingthe currently very active Aubrey Rose weseem to have had more than our fair share.A new one has now joined the parade albeitwith a more gruesome subject than hispredecessors. Russell Edwards met me inPaninis. Now 48 and living in Hadley Woodwith his wife and two children, his earlyyears showed no evidence of literary orforensic interests. Battling his way up fromselling Teddy Bears in Birkenhead hestudied at University for an MBA inBusiness studies and started a successfulcareer in software distribution ending upemploying over one hundred staff. At anearlier stage he lived and worked close byBrick Lane in London’s East End and cameto know the area and its history well. Achance viewing of Johnny Depp’s film

‘From Hell’ in 2001 based in the same partof the city fired his interest in the story ofJack the Ripper. Several years of amateurdetective work about the Ripper’s unsolvedidentity followed. Matters came to a head in2007. Alerted by a friend he attended anauction at which a shawl was on sale. Ashawl reputed to having been used byCatherine Eddowes one of the Ripper’svictims. Russell purchased the shawl andwas eventually able to have its stainsanalysed by a scientist at Liverpool’s JohnMoores University using DNA technology. The scientist was Senior Lecturer inMolecular Biology Dr Jari Louhelainenwhose two major lines of research wereforensic genetics and medical/mammaliangenetics. His studies of the shawl andthose of Dr David Miller, Reader inMolecular Andrology at the University ofLeeds took several years but leadeventually to the DNA identification ofdescendants of Eddowes and those of herassailant Aaron Kosminski. A local residentin 1888 Kosminski was the police’s mainsuspect. Russell’s detective work convinced him

that Kosminski was in fact Jack the Ripper. His book that followed, ‘Naming Jack theRipper’ has re- opened and possibly closedthe controversy over who Jack the Ripperwas. Apart from the book Russell hasarranged guided walks at the scene of thecrime. For those of you with an interest inhorror these walks would suit you down tothe ground. Choose a wet night with BrickLane’s mean streets illuminated only bylamplight and ladies, maybe leave theshawl at home? Details are on the websitewww.thejacktheripperexperience.co.ukNice to meet you Russell. A great story. Rod Armstrong.

‘Friends of St Paul’s’ –how you can help ourNeighbourhood Church Earlier this year I was asked by theReverend Rupert Mackay to take over asTreasurer of St Paul’s Church. I had no previous experience of church

finances and had never paused to thinkabout how St Paul’s is funded. Tania and Iwere married there in 1996, and ourchildren, Claudia and George, were bothChristened and Confirmed there. If anything, I had assumed St Paul’s was

simply paid for by a central Church ofEngland fund and that it would always bethere when we needed it. I was thereforesurprised to learn that St Paul’s needs togenerate some £100,000 annually to coverits costs and that this is before buildingsmaintenance! I was further surprised tolearn just how dependent St Paul’s is on theregular and very generous giving of only avery small number of local residents. It soon became clear to me that St Paul’s

needed much wider local supportespecially if it is to put in place a properbuildings maintenance program topreserve it for future generations. St Paul’sis now over 100 years old. Its buildings areshowing many signs of aging and are inneed of constant maintenance and repair. In more recent years, its walls have

cracked as a result of poor foundationswhich as well as being based on Londonclay (which expands and contractsdepending on the weather!) are threatenedby encroaching tree roots. I would like tobring this urgent need for funding to theattention of local residents who do notattend St Paul’s regularly but who

nonetheless use St Paul’s as an importantfocal point at occasional times; forweddings, christenings, funerals andseasonal events, or who perhaps simplyenjoy its open garden space. The role of StPaul’s in our wider community is nevermore apparent than during the festiveseason when our local school uses it for itscarol concert (including children from allreligious backgrounds) and the communitygathers in it for the large Christingleservices or on Christmas Eve to enjoy theheartwarming atmosphere of the Christmasspirit. With a view to setting up next year amore formal ‘Friends of St Paul’s’ to helpfund the repair and maintenance of thebuildings and grounds of St Paul’s Church, the Church Wardens and I would be verygrateful to know whether you would bewilling to help by making a small monthlycontribution by way of standing order and

An Idea above our Station! Are you (tick all that apply):

a parent with a baby or toddlers? a West End shopper?suffering with a bad back or mobility problems? a cyclist?a commuter with a habitually heavy briefcase? a non-driver?a holidaymaker? registered disabled?

An odd collection of questions, you mightthink, but anyone who’s answered Yes toany of them would benefit from step-free

access to our local station. Carryingyourself, others or heavy or awkward loadsup and down the 30-odd steps in order to

use Hadley Wood’s primaryamenity, its train service, can rangefrom a challenge to a completeimpediment. The alternative foranyone wishing to travel to or fromHadley Wood without a car is a taxito the nearest accessible station –Potters Bar, High Barnet orOakwood – requiring an outlay ofsome £7 each way plus the captivetime. Older residents rememberthat step-free access used to exist, and indeed there is a short tarmacramp to Bartram’s Lane behind

railings midway up the western platform. But on the steep slope alongside theeastern platform, an unexpectedopportunity has just presented itself.Network Rail’s current bridge strengtheningworks have already required the creation ofan access ramp from the south-easterncorner of the road bridge down to theLondon-bound platform for use by theirheavy machinery, and work is also plannedto the retaining wall. So on behalf of the Hadley Wood

Association, I have opened discussionsthrough our Station Manager DuncanPrimrose to seek the conversion of this neweastern ramp into a pedestrian accessramp once the bridge works are complete, and I hope that if necessary we can counton your support. Together with the opening of the western

ramp, full step-free access to Hadley WoodStation could be achieved in a very shorttime at marginal cost, benefitting allresidents and their visitors. Francesca Caine

On 11th September, 2014, 80golfers soaked up the gloriousSeptember weather at the HadleyWood Golf Club for the 2014 AlanCox and Associates AnnualCharity Golf Day. All moneyraised went to local charities,Cherry Lodge Cancer Care, TheBravo Trust and national charity,Diabetes UK. The course, designed by Alistair Mackenzie, creator of the US Masters course, was in magnificent condition andravenous golfers and spectatorsenjoyed superb food and warmservice from the club, drawingplaudits from Alan Cox on behalfof the organising committee(Peter Ciccone, Byron Daviesand Richard Mason). This was atrue community event, with localpeople donating auction and

raffle prizes, advertising in the brochure or on the course, andparticipating in the auction and raffle. A special mention toBarclays Bank who kindly matched the funds raised from the “beatthe pro” competition on the tricky par 3 17th hole. But the daywasn’t without a little healthy competition. Bernard Riley won the individual competition and the team event

(best 2 of 4 scores per hole) was won by ASC with 80 points. Allthree charities are absolutely delighted with the donations (stillbeing received at time of press) and would like to give thanks to all who planned, attended and supported the day. This was agreat example of local people and businesses pulling together to raise much- needed funds for worthy causes. Chase Farm HospitalUpdate As a member of the Health Scrutiny Panelon Enfield Council I am delighted that thepurchase of the Barnet and Chase FarmHospital NHS Trust by the Royal FreeLondon NHS Foundation Trust has beencompleted. This is the first piece of positivenews in the chequered history of ChaseFarm Hospital for a long time. The siteneeds to be redeveloped and it isacknowledged that part of the hospital is nolonger fit for purpose regarding the deliveryof modern day health care. I look forwardto working with our Planning Departmentand the Royal Free to secure this muchneeded and long overdue redevelopmentand ensure that it is delivered as soon aspossible for the benefit of Enfield residents.Listed below are the services, some of

which are up and running at the presentmoment which hopefully the hospital will bedelivering and should be fully functional by2018. The Trust hopes to start work on thefirst phase of the site by January 2015.Urgent Care Centre The urgent care centre is available formedical treatment or advice which does notneed a visit to A&E. The centre treats mostinjuries and illnesses that are urgent but notlife threatening. For example sprains andstrains, broken bones, minor burns andscalds, minor head and eye injuries, bitesand stings. You don’t need to book anappointment – just turn up and you will beseen promptly by either a doctor or nurse. The service is open 9.00am- 9.pm, sevendays a week. The co- -location of the GPout of hours service means that access tocare can continue overnight. Radiology The X- ray dept and MRI Scanner arelocated adjacent to the Urgent Care Centre. Elective Surgery Chase Farm is focusing on providing acomprehensive range of planned surgery.Having no emergency cases means nointerruptions to planned operations. Thiswill reduce the chance of operations beingcancelled and therefore avoid the stress

this causes patients. Bringing togetherdoctors, nurses and other staff whospecialise in a particular surgical area helpsto make more effective use of theirknowledge, skills and expertise. Plannedsurgery includes such operations asorthopedics, urology and ear, nose andthroat. Chase Farm Hospital alreadyprovides a ‘joint school’ where patients canfind out more about their orthopedicoperation and have the opportunity to askquestions. There will be two inpatientsurgical wards and a day surgical unit. There will be a unit providing on- the- daysurgical admissions where patients willarrive before going to the operating theatre, then go to the ward after their operation.Paediatric Assessment Unit This specialist unit provides a uniqueopportunity for children to be assessed whoare not seriously ill but would otherwisehave gone to an acute hospital. Trainedpaediatric staff will see patients who requireassessment and on- going treatment. Theunit is located within the Urgent Care centreand patients are referred by their GP, theurgent care centre or another medical teamand is open 12 hours a day. Older Person’s Assessment Unit The aim of the unit is to provide a one- stopshop approach to improve the care of olderpeople by providing rapid access to care, tests and treatment, avoiding inappropriateadmissions to hospital. Referral is from theirGP, urgent care centre or other medicalteam. The unit is open from 9.00am to7.00pm but when the unit is closed allpatients are safely discharged ortransferred to hospital for admission, depending on their individual clinicallyassessed needs. Into Africa. One of Hadley Wood’s redeeming featuresis the amount of charity work by localresidents which goes on here quiteunobtrusively. People run, cycle, walk, climbmountains, sing, arrange events, holdcoffee mornings, write cookery books andsell things all in support of a wide range ofcharities. Some go further by devoting theirlives to a particular charitable organization.Amongst these are Katie and Steve Machell.Katie (nee Bolton) moved to Crescent Eastin Hadley Wood in 1981. After Hadley Wood Primary school she continued atHaberdashers and then took a gap year inrural Kenya. There she worked for the AfricaInland mission (AIM) teaching in a villagesecondary school before returning to the UKto study Theology at Durham University. The year in Kenya was, however, a life

changing experience for Katie and thebeginning of her journey living and workingin Africa. In 1996 at a Young People’sconference organized by AIM she metSteve. Steve was also very interested inmission work after experiencing a similargap year and in 1997 they married. Hopingto get back to Africa they realized theimportance of having specific training toprepare for cross- cultural living andmission work. At that stage Katie was amidwife at Frimley Park hospital and Stevea patent attorney. Deciding on a futureworking in the Mission service theyattended a two year course at All NationsChristian College in Ware Hertfordshire

living in a community with people of manynationalities and gaining experience ofmany different cultures. Their firstplacement was in Tanzania living with amissionary family on the shores of LakeVictoria. The family was increasing. Jackwas one year old, Toby followed in 2002and with their children Katie and Steve setoff for their next placement in the ComoresIslands off the coast of Madagascar. Theystayed there for two years with Steve actingas administrator for the team of teachersand medics of which they were part. ByMarch 2005 they were in Nairobi. Steveworking as finance controller for Aim Airsupporting remote missionaries and churchworkers in East Africa whilst Katie, by nowthe mother of Jack, Toby and Ethan, wasteaching in one of Nairobi’s many slums. They returned to the UK in 2007, Steve toobtain a Pilot’s licence and Katie to renewher midwifery qualification. By 2012 theywere back in Kenya with Mission AviationFellowship (MAF) and Steve fulfilling a life’sambition flying as a mission pilot in aCessna 206 the smallest plane in the MAF. I asked Katie about their lifestyle in

Kenya. “We lead a relatively normal life!’she explained, ‘the boys are at Braeburn alocal international school. Jack, the eldestis taking IGCSE’s this summer and inSeptember will be Head Prefect there. Allthree boys play cricket, hockey and rugbyfor the school. Over this last year they haveeven been treading the boards of theschool theatre!’ ‘What about security?’‘Well, security is an issue although atpresent most problems are on the coast along way from where we live in Nairobi. Wehave to be vigilant when out and about and we are quite used to the sight of armedofficers on most street corners.Nevertheless’ she adds ‘ it is a fantasticplace to live and to bring up children. Thereis such a diversity of experience here andthe opportunities we have are wonderful. Infact we would recommend it for anyonewanting to share their gifts and skills withthose in need’. ‘What about the future?’ Iask ‘We return to Kenya at the beginning ofSeptember. Steve will carry on flying anddoing management work. He flies mostly toMarsabit in Northern Kenya about twice aweek. It’s a very needy area where there isa significant lack of food, water and otherresources as well as ongoing inter- tribalconflict. I will be working part time as acommunications officer for MAF Kenya. Reflecting on this story I wonder at the

example these young people set. Unsungand unreported, they and many others inthis country work to help others. Inspiring?Absolutely. Rod Armstrong

The Tree Rat Menace Scirus Carolinensis is the proper name forthose sweet little and oh so clever creaturesthat are found in all our gardens. 100 greysquirrels were introduced into these islandsfrom north America at the end of the 19thcentury. Some black squirrels, which areotherwise identical, were introduced into the Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire andCambridgeshire areas. In north America theywere a popular food for the native Americans. In this country many of us see them as

clever little animals in the garden. They arehowever killers. Not only do they spread apox which doesn’t affect them but which isdeadly to our native red squirrels but theycan also carry Weils disease which can bea killer for humans. We all know that theydig up bulbs, raid birds’ nests of eggs andyoung, but they also severely damageyoung broad leaf saplings. Andrew Woods of the Royal Forestry

Society says “The grey squirrelsare wiping out Britain’s beech andoaklands. They strip the bark ofthe young trees which then die.”Grey squirrels have threatenedthe governments pledge toincrease woodland cover from10% to 12% by 2060. You will bepleased to learn that PrinceCharles is the patron of the redsquirrel survival trust. What canwe do to help him and to rid thecountry of these nasty northAmerican pests? Well first of all deter them from

entering your garden. Use birdfeeders which are squirrel proof. You can trap them in special traps but the RSPCA who are veryhot on squirrels says you shouldcheck the trap every few hours.(That more or less excludes the use of professional verminexterminators who wouldn’t beable to do that). According to theWildlife and Countryside act of

1981 and the later European Directive2009/147/EC there are right and wrongways to deal with a caught squirrel. Whatyou must not do is to release the squirrelinto another area. This is against the law and to quote the

RSPCA pamphlet “Such action may not behumane since a squirrel moved to a newarea is likely to have difficulty in settling intoan established population and may eitherdie or keep travelling” Also what youdefinitely must not do is to drown thesquirrel as this will incur a visit to the courtand a penalty of £1,500. (However it seemsto me that drowning takes a minute at mostand is painless and certain). No, the only way to dispatch the little

rotter, as the young attractive lady from theRSPCA told me when she visited me, is to give it one sharp blow to the head with a blunt instrument; having naturallytransferred the squirrel from the cage to asack and confining it to one end of the

sack. Or to shoot it with a shot gun, forwhich you will need a licence, and of coursebe aware that you can’t discharge a shot gun within 25 yards of a publicthoroughfare, or with one shot to the headfrom an air rifle. Though how you can dothat when the squirrel is racing up anddown in the trap, and also avoid ricochets isbeyond me. Lord Redesdale, the LiberalDemocratic peer was able to rid his severalhundred acres of Northumberland forest ofgrey squirrels, and in fact killed 23,400 buthe needed a team to do it, and a grant fromthe government of £150,000. I can remember as a boy there being a

reward of sixpence for each grey squirreltail. That would translate to a sizeable sumin today’s money. We must not be deterred. We must at least try to get rid of theseforeigners and after that we can think aboutthe Canada geese which were also foolishlybrought over here in the 19th century. LettersDebit card fraud In the early evening of October 7th wereceived a telephone call from someoneclaiming to be Detective ConstableAndrew Smith from the Fraud Squad atNew Scotland Yard. He volunteered hisbadge number. D.C.Smith informed methat a man was in custody, who alreadyhad previous convictions for theft, havingbeen caught using a debit card in myname to purchase just under £1,000 ofApple computer equipment. He told methat the man was also in possession of abank statement from our joint account. He said the debit card had either been stolen or copied. We immediatelychecked that all our cards were safe. Iasked Smith for details of the debit cardand bank statement but he said he wasunable to disclose that information andasked me to verify that we had not madeany Apple purchase for that amount. Ihad begun to be suspicious because hespoke with a strong foreign accent andhis speech was uneducated. I told him

that I never gave any personal bankingdetails over the telephone and I needed toprove his identity. He told me to ring 999and ask for him at New Scotland Yard. Ipointed out the emergency services werepurely for emergencies, but he insisted thatthis was an emergency. Of course, when Idialled 999 (having a perfectly normaldialling tone on our telephone) theresponse was definitely not the legitimateservice, but was answered by someonewith a voice suspiciously like Smith’s. Irelayed this impression to him and saidunless he could give me details of the debitcard and bank statement in his possession,I intended to contact my local police stationand also New Scotland Yard independentlyto verify his claims. Even though ourtelephone again had the normal diallingtone, when I tried to ring Southgate PoliceStation I was answered by a woman withthe same foreign accent and then passedacross to Smith. At this point I told Smiththat I would make these calls on my mobiletelephone and he said he would ring backten minutes later. He made no furthercontact with me. Up to this point Smith had

not actually asked for any compromisingfinancial details, but I was absolutelycertain that this was an intended fraud inprogress. I then contacted our debit cardsecurity departments and they verifiedthat no money had disappeared from ouraccounts. The following morning Ireported this to Southgate Police Station. The desk officer told me that, had Iproved more gullible, Smith would havesaid that they needed to see my debitcard to match it to the thief’s and that adespatch rider or taxi would be comingto collect it. The normal dialling tone Iseemed to be getting on my telephonewas almost certainly a recording used by Smith. Community P.C. SteveDouglas, Southgate Police Station,(telephone 0208 721 2688. Email:[email protected] ) hassince delivered leaflets and posters forme to distribute locally to warn HadleyWood residents of the danger of this andother types of scams.
