Enfield Council has regrettablyrejected Community Assetstatus for Trent Park. Despiteoverwhelming public demandand a 4000 signature petition, the Council rejected theapplications with an inadequateone paragraph explanation incontempt of the hugelysignificant military and culturalheritage on our doorstep. Thedecision was announced on theday another country house,Clandon Park, was devastatedby fire. In a tragically fateful coincidence,Clandon contained much of Trent Park’soriginal furniture and china collection, someof which has fortunately been salvaged. What better place to house this salvagedfurniture than it’s original home – a restoredand publicly accessible Trent Park? Iconsider Enfield’s decision to be unlawfuland the Campaign group is considering allavenues to challenge it. The good news, however, is that a cross- party workinggroup has now been established todetermine the future planning status of thesite – I will be on this group and will ensurethe case is made for public access and aneducational heritage centre to honour thehugely important role played by Trent Parkin WWII.

Mobile Phone Mast After opposing anunsightly 20mmetal phone mast at the endof Bartrams Lane, O2 has now respondedwith a proposal to introduce one dressed

up as a tree! I fullysupport better mobilephone coverage and itis good to see that withsufficient pressurethese companies candevelop masts that aremore sympathetic totheir surroundings.

PlanningThere has been aproliferation of planningapplications for new

developments in Hadley Wood which manyresidents are rightfully concerned about. Mycolleagues and I have been offering oursupport however these often fall on deafears at the Council. With the Hadley WoodPlanning Forum consultation now open(with notices now up across Hadley Wood)I urge all residents who care about localplanning issues to support this as it will givea much needed voice to our communityover future developments.

Cycle RacksMany thanks to all those who have written insupporting my campaign for cycle racksnear Hadley Wood train station – I amcontinuing to press the Council on this as Ifeel they will be a well used and welcomeaddition to our shopping parade.

Parking Restrictions on Duchy RoadAlmost! Good news has finally beenreceived for Duchy Road – after two years

Update From Cllr Jason CharalambousSave Trent Park Campaign

of public demands and over 106 almostunanimously supportive responses toOctober’s public consultation, the Councilhas finally agreed to introduce doubleyellow lines between Douglas Close andthe junction of Duchy Road/LancasterAvenue. The bad news is that I have beenadvised that this 45 minute job could takeup to two years to complete, and evenmore ludicrously the entire exercise will cost£2000 – a couple hundred pounds forpainting the lines and the rest of the moneyon council bureaucracy! An unnecessary20 page report was compiled by theCouncil to consider the merits of yellowlines, reaching the conclusion which wasobvious to most residents several yearsago. Consider this in contrast to the oneparagraph rejection of Trent Park’sCommunity Asset status. Something seemsvery wrong with the way this Councilconducts its business, and I will bestepping up my demands for betteraccountability, improved efficiency andbetter use of public money. The next Cockfosters Ward Forum will be

held on 10 June from 7:30pm at the ScoutsHut next to Christ Church Hall, Chalk Lane– please feel free to attend to discuss localissues with me and my colleagues; thelocal police will also be giving an updateand taking questions. A Message from DavidBurrowes MPI am delighted and privileged to be re-elected as your MP for another 5 years.Thank you to all those in Hadley Wood whovoted for me. At the declaration of the resultI committed myself to love service not

power; to be concerned for others and tobe a strong advocate for our local area. That commitment is to all constituentswhether you voted for me or not.Now that we have a majority Conservative

Government, rather than a coalition, youcan hold me and my Party to account forthe promises and commitments we have

made during the election. Please do so! It would helpus keep in touch if yousigned up to my regular emailnewsletters or visit my websiteor make an appointment.Much of my work as MP

goes beyond decisions andvotes in Parliament to localissues and concerns. It isoften not so much what I cando as an MP but rather whatwe can do together as a localcommunity. A key issue on the

doorstep and in meetings has beenplanning and development in HadleyWood. I am resolved to work closely withyour local Councillors, Hadley WoodAssociation and the Hadley WoodNeighbourhood Planning Forum. Can Iencourage you to get involved in the Forumso that the community can have moreinfluence over development in HadleyWood? Finally, over the last few months I have

arranged a number of "meet yourneighbours" evenings at homes in HadleyWood. They have been successful atbringing neighbours together withCouncillors, and have been useful to raiseissues with me. If you would like to host oneplease let me know.I very much look forward to representing

you over the next 5 years.David Burrowes MPwww.davidburrowes.com

Where’s Sailor Jack?Hadley Wood’s reputation as fertile groundfor writers has been bolstered by a newentrant. John Uttley OBE has just publishedhis first book “Where’s Sailor Jack?” I wentto see him to find out how he managed tofit in a book with all his other interests andresponsibilities. John is from Lancashire, with Blackpool and Bolton links. Educatedat King George V Grammar school inSouthport he then went up to OxfordUniversity (New College) to study Physics. After graduation he trained as anaccountant working first at English Electricand then, rapidly progressing up the careerladder, became Financial Director at theCentral Electricity Generating Board(CEGB) and the National Grid. In this rolehe was well placed to experience theeffects of the Miners strike in 1984/5 andthe beginning of the British Nuclear industryat Sizewell. Marriage to Janet and threechildren brought him to Hadley Wood 28years ago. Retirement meant several posts

as non executive Director and a Degree inDivinity. Timmy the Border collie needs amention here as the two of them are oftenseen together walking our local fields. What about the book. This is a family

saga which draws authenticity from John’supbringing in the North West. The storyfollows the lives of two main characters Bob(an engineer) and Richard (an investment

banker). Both are Grammar school ladswhose careers progress rapidly upwards inthe meritocracy. The story recounts theirsuccesses, loves, their marriages to twoclever and combative women and divorce(in Bob’s case). Throughout this funny, engaging and sometimes very poignantnarrative, the main characters struggle withtheir beliefs and consciences. The home of one of the characters

(Richard) is in an imaginary Hertfordshirevillage called Monken Mead. John Uttleywould like to make it clear that the village isnot meant to be Hadley Wood but onefifteen miles further north. As well as a very good story there are

philosophical issues here debated in aneveryday language by characters thereader can easily identify with. Reading it,unused areas of my brain lit up andcreaked into life. Details and extracts canbe found at www.wheressailorjack.com orthe book in paperback or Kindle format canbe purchased from Amazon.Rod Armstrong

Having qualified for the Allianz Cup Finals(teams from all over the South of England)at the back end of last year (second in ourpool) we looked forward to playing the bestof the best on Saturday 11th April at AllianzPark. With Old Coelfanians and Blackheathin our pool we knew it would be a toughday of rugby but from the whistle the boysfrom Barnet were on fire. Knowing thepitches we'd be playing on would benarrow, we ran a few training sessionspractising our straight running, pop passesfrom the tackle area and short passesto change the focus. In addition, ourdefensive line speed would be critical. These skills proved to be decisive. Weromped home with multiple tries againstOCs and whilst Blackheath were excellent(well drilled and organised with some verystrong runners) they struggled to copewith the directness, speed and controlledphysicality of the U10s. Having won ourpool we drew Huntingdon Stags in thesemi- finals. They are a great team withsome very talented young players. Whilstwe secured the majority of the possession,we failed to convert this pressure intopoints. Huntingdon always looked

dangerous with the ball and a number oftimes threatened to break through ourranks. Fortunately for us, our boys hadbrought their 'A game', tackling likedemons when needed. The scorelinefinished 0-0 (a fair result) but due to ourshowing in the pool, we progressed tothe Final against our old foe 'HemelHempstead'. Played at half time in aPremiership game between Saracens andLeicester, the boys from Barnet ran out infront of thousands. Having been bolsteredby some excellent pre-match motivationaltalks from Martin, Nigel and Pete the boysplayed with 'fire and ice'. James Wellingswent over for our first score from abeautifully executed set piece play. In thedying minutes Luca Stevens crashed overfor a second score to put the game beyondHemel's reach. Considering our formagainst Hemel who have beaten us on 4previous occasions in the last few yearsand recently eclipsed us in the County Cupto lift the trophy, this was a tremendousachievement by Barnet. It is a hugepsychological boost to the U10s andshows what you can do with passion, skilland belief. Martin Smeaton (junior) lifted

the Winners Cup for the Barnet U10s infront of the biggest crowd we have everplayed before. This was a truly magnificentteam performance. We utilised all the skillswe learned this season and this win was avery fitting end to what has been a highlysuccessful campaign. The boys havetasted victory and an occasional defeat butabove all, they have enjoyed the journeyand grown with the experience. Massivecongratulations to all the team and to theirindefatigable coaches Martin Smeaton, aswell as Nigel Wellings and Peter Gassner(both of Hadley Wood) It was fantastic tohear 'The Winners are BARNET', ringingaround a packed Allianz Park. Thank youfor all the support from parents, and theU9s there on the day.Scott StevensContact details for those interested injoining the U10s areMartin Smeaton07867 528 [email protected] Stevens07768 557 348scott.w.stevens @bnymellon.com

Our services areled by two Macmillan Cancer InformationNurses and are available free of charge. The majority of therapies, includingacupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reflexology, reiki healing and counsellingare based in Howard House; we can oftenarrange home visits when people areunable to come to us. There are weeklydrop-ins and twice monthly evening drop-

ins; people can speak to a nurse, enjoy atea or coffee, receive a short therapy andshare their experiences. Group activitiesinclude a singing group, an art group andexercise classes. There are also supportgroups for people with lymphoma, ovarian, prostate and bladder cancer One of ourMacmillan Nurses runs our outreachservice, providing one--to--one confidentialadvice regarding cancer and otherhealthcare issues in various communitycentres throughout the borough. We now have some 1,500 active

members and if not for our wonderful groupof more than 150 volunteers, we certainlywould not be able to help and support somany people. We have two charity shops,Barnet and Borehamwood, hold our ownfundraising and networking events andsupport third party events. What do ourmembers think of us: “An Oasis of Love”,“Friendly and Unthreatening”, “Wonderfulfor one’s sanity”, “Understanding and Fullof Warmth”, and “A great healer for cancerpatients”. It has not always been an easyjourney. Our charity was founded in 1988,when palliative care was in its infancy.Initially it was all about providing such care,

starting with a very successful symptom--control support team at Barnet Hospital, itwas soon realised that we needed toextend our work to supporting people withcancer all the way through their cancerjourney. Our first Information and Support Centre

opened in May 1988 in a Portakabin atBarnet Hospital. An important milestonewas reached in 2003 with the arrival of our1000th new member. The following year wehad to leave the Barnet Hospital site butwere fortunate in finding our currentbuilding in Union Street. No charity can stand still, so should

anyone reading this article have new ideaswhether it is to raise funds, offer newnetworking opportunities, or to volunteer,we would love to hear from you.To know more or to offer support,

please go to our website,www.cherrylodgecancercare.org.uk, oryou can always telephone 020 8441 7000and we will more than happy to talk aboutthe work we do and our hopes for thefuture.Barbara Moody

Simba went missing on aThursday morning after he followed a door-to-door delivery ladytoo far from his house and could not find his way home. Wood contacted the family to report sightings of the cat enablingthem to trace his movements. He was reported to be approachingpeople and trying to get inside houses. Then at 11pm on theSaturday night the family received a phone call to say Simba wasalive and well and being looked after by a kind rescuer who livedon Cockfosters Road. Young Theodore thanked the rescuers witha box of chocolates and told them “I love my cat“. Simba is verypleased to be home and now has a collar and microchip!Paul Sutters
