We have lots of new stuff added to the paper this month.

First off, I would like to welcome Carl Stewart back to the paper. Carl will be working on a monthly contribution to the paper starting this month.

I also want to welcome the Crossroads Bar & Grill to the pages of the paper. They are one of the few places on the far west side with pool tables. Check out their ad on page 33.

I also want to welcome Melissa Little’s column to the paper. Melissa interviews various pro and semi pro players across the country and we will be running her column each month.

Dart players are not left out this month with a new column from Karlheinz Zochling starting this month.

Bret Huth beat Evans Bishop two out of three sets on June 7th and 8th to win Ryan Anderson’s $500 entry 10’s and Under 10-ball event at Skip & Jan’s.

Anderson announced the event on Facebook and had a full field of players willing to get in and play against the best in a long race format. Anderson, Huth, Bishop, Jose Gonzalez, Mike Sandoval, Steve Murray, Mike Williams and John Ritonya all got their $500 entry in to lock up their spots in the event. Anderson commented with regards to putting together the event, “A lot of good players don’t get out to play because of the time it takes to play in a traditional format. Typically you grind all weekend for 12-20 hours and walk away with $200-$500. This tournament had $4000 and only 8 players competing for 3 spots to get the money.”

The winners side on Saturday was ruled by a name from the past in Evans Bishop. Bishop had been away from the tournament scene for the better part of three years but showed his old form by going undefeated on Saturday, including a win over Huth for the hot-seat.

Three players came back on Sunday and Bret Huth took control of the day with a 21-14 win over Ryan Anderson in the first match of the day. With that win, Huth put himself in the unenvi-able position of having to defeat Bishop twice in the finals. The first set of the finals was close, with Huth scoring a 21-15 win. The second set was all Huth, with Bret cruising to a comfortable 21-9 win for first place.

“I probably put together the best three sets I’ve played in the last few years on Sunday to win.” said Huth after his victory. Bishop had nothing

but compliments for Huth after the event. “Bret played fantastic. He played very smart. You show a little weakness against someone like him and you are done” Bishop commented.

Huth had good things to say about the event and orga-nizer. “Thanks to Ryan Anderson for running a class act tournament. There were some of the best matches I’ve seen or been a part of in a while.” said Huth. When asked about future plans for this format, Ander-son commented “I plan on running this format tourney 2 times a year. The format could change depending on interest. Maybe 9 ft tables, bar table 8 ball, one pocket.”

John Cassidy made his way through a field of twenty two players undefeated to win Knobbys 9’s and Under 8-Ball tournament on June 6th.

Cassidy’s path to the hot seat included wins over Sophia Morquecho, Lynn Shoemaker and Ray Ryan.

On the one loss side, Tyson Cole was on a roll after a winners side loss to Shoe-maker. On the one loss side, Cole eliminated Ed Scott, Charles Peten, Shoemak-er, Scott Perry and then Ryan in the semi-finals.

Cassidy brought Cole’s winning streak to a halt in the finals, with a 2-1 score-line.

Saturday, June 7th, found 29 fillies in the starting gate at Stingers Sports Bar, ready to race to win the 3rd leg of the 2014 AWBT season. At the wire, Su-san Williams edged Bernie Store by 2 lengths (7-5) ensuring no Triple Crown winner (Rebecca Wagner did not enter due to prior commitment), Nina Tagley showed for 3rd. There were no winning Exacta or Trifecta tickets!

Stingers, with their 12 Diamond 7’ tables, played host for the AWBT’s only 8-ball event. A large crowd of Off Track Betters there for the Belmont Stakes were treated to some outstanding matches by our ladies. Originally scheduled for races to 4 on the winners and 4 on the one-loss side, players voted to raise the race to 5 on the winners. Even with the longer races the matches came in on time and the brackets moved along smoothly. It is a testament to the great strides all these ladies have made in the skill and tactics of 8-ball in the last 10 years! Good Show Ladies!

Tucson’s Tracie Hamman, with a big win over Amanda Pulley, and then Donna Taylor, found her way into Sunday’s semi-final. Nina Tagley, in her first event of the year, played spectacularly in a 5-1 win over Susan Williams for her spot in the semis. Another first timer, Sophia Morquecho beat Marcy Thomas (5-3) to make it to Sunday’s Final 8. Bernie Store (5-0) over Terri Johnson McCauley rounded out the Final Four of the winner’s side.

On the one-loss side, it was Susan Williams stopping Las Vegas’ Tina Larsen (4-2). Jamie Goodwin (4-3) over Donna Taylor. Sara Sorg (4-1) versus Terri Johnson McCauley and Claudia Morado past Marcy Thomas to make up the one-loss side Final Four.

Sunday found Bernie sitting in the hot seat with wins over Morquecho (5-0) and Nina (5-3) who earlier sent Hamman to the loser’s (5-4). The B-side had roommates Sara Sorg and Claudia Morado playing each other. Sara had the house bragging rights winning (4-0) and then beat Hamman (4-1) before losing to Williams (4-0) to achieve her best AWBT finish of 4th place. Susan Williams beat ‘first time casher’ Jamie Goodwin 7th place, Sophia (4-1) and then Sorg to set up a rematch with Nina. This time Susan turned it around (4-2) and Nina had to settle for 3rd.

A close match final was expected between these two many titled players. Susan got out fast winning the first 2 games and never seemed to lose control. She galloped to a (7-5) victory and won the purse of $360. Bernie placed for $270. Congratulations go out to all the new faces in the money.

Sunday’s Second Chance had a 19 player field. Six of those ladies, who hadn’t played Saturday, took advantage of the low $5 entry to come and get some AWBT experience. Amanda Pulley beat Jaye Succo to win the $100 First Prize.

The AWBT thanks all the players throughout the Southwest who traveled to make this a great event. Good luck to all of you in the upcoming BCA Champi-onships. Represent!

Thanks to Dale Hanson and his staff for hosting and adding $300 to the Main Event and $50 to the Second Chance.

Thanks to Jose Gonzales, of Las Glorias Grille, for adding $100.

Thanks to the Friends of the AWBT for adding $100

Thanks to my partner Kristie Ortega and her man Scooter for running a smooth operation. Our next event will be at BullShooters, September 6th & 7th. Hope to see you there and bring a friend!

The Desert Classic Tour stayed on the bar tables in June with an 8-ball event at Skip & Jan’s in Tempe, Az. Playing on the bar tables, and play-ing without Mitch Ellerman or Scott Frost, meant that Jon Smith would be the tournament favorite and he didn’t disappoint; but it wasn’t as easy as some fans might have thought it would be.

Things got underway on Saturday with forty two players competing for the title as well as more than $2,000 in prize money.

Brian Reich got the award for the worst draw of the event after posting a “two and out” with losses to Dennis Orender and Chuck Evans.

Chuck Evans presence on the one loss side was certainly a surprise after a loss to Oro Valley’s Kevin Peterson. Evans would take the loss in stride and put together a six match winning streak on the left side of the board that included a hill-hill win to eliminate Peterson early Sunday.

Three B players turned in outstanding perfor-mances with George Bell scoring wins over Darryl Smith and John Cassidy, Oscar Avila eliminating Carl Stewart, Tom Neil, Mike Wil-liams and Dennis Orender, and Rick Armbrust competing for the hot-seat on Sunday,

Sunday play on the winners side saw Armbrust defeat Tim Daniels 5-0, while Smith was sending Gus Briseno to the one loss side 6-3.

Smith got out to a 2-0 lead over Armbrust in the hot-seat match, but was forced to watch Arm-brust win four games in a row to get to the hill at 4-2. Smith dug down and won four games of his own, including back-to-back table runs at the end, to take the match 6-4. “I thought he had me” said Smith after the match. “Somehow I put it together to get out of that one with the win” he continued.

On the one loss side, Sunday dawned with Chuck Evans exacting his revenge against Peterson, and Tucson’s George Teyechea sending Tres Kane to the seats 6-4.

Both players coming over from the winners side won in the next round with Daniel upending Ev-ans 6-5 and Briseno ending Teyechea’s tourna-ment 8-4.

Gus looked to be in complete control in his match with Daniel in the following round, as he led the 8-6 race early 6-2. Daniel would mount a comeback though, as he won three straight games to get to the hill at 6-5. Briseno joined Daniel on he hill at 7-5, but Daniel had control

of a wide open table and missed a ball late in the run to give Briseno new life and Gus took advantage to run a tough rack for the 8-5 win.

The semi-finals was another tight match as Briseno took a 7-0 lead in the 8-5 race. Armbrust then came back to win four straight games and join Briseno on the hill with Armbrust breaking. The pool gods got involved in the final game as Armbrust broke dry and Briseno proceeded to run the rack for the hill-hill win.

With two straight hill-hill matches, the fans were defi-nitely surprised to see the final match between Smith and Briseno only go one set and end much quicker than anyone anticipated.

After the tournament was over, Smith gave his thanks to Bryan Mordt for the great cue that Mordt made for Smith. “My cue plays great and I can’t wait to buy

another one from Bryan” said Smith. Smith also complimented Dennis Orender on another well run tournament and all of the staff at Skip & Jan’s for the great service and food all weekend long.

With the win, Smith moves into second place on the DCT points list, sixty points behind Mitch Ellerman.

The Desert Classic Tour now takes a break until September 20th and 21st, when they visit Pockets in Tucson for big table 9-ball.

Rick Armbrust turned in an outstanding third place performance

Tim Daniel scored his best finish on tour so far

Good Mechanics, Step Two

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

In my last article, I talked about the mechan-ics involved in achieving proper alignment. In this article, I’ll wrap up my discussion on good mechanics by talking about the mechanics involved in maintaining a level cue.

Any time a cue is stroked through a cue ball at a downward angle, the cue ball is almost always curved off of its straight-line path. The reason for this is because the downward angle puts a backspin on the ball, which then sets up friction between the ball and the cloth, which then generates heat, which then causes the cue ball to “drag”. If there is any sidespin (English) on the cue ball (which there almost always is, due to the fact that the cue ball is rarely struck at exactly dead center on the vertical axis), the ball will curve in the direction of the English, i.e., Right English will produce a right-hand curve. Therefore, unless the shooter is inten-tionally wanting to curve the cue ball, the cue stick must be held as level as possible all through the stroke.

The best way to keep the cue level all the way through the stroke is to use what is called a “pendulum stroke” (see Diagram A). A pendu-lum stroke is one where you start with a level cue, and then you move only the forearm back

and forth, keeping everything else, including the upper arm, locked into place. The motion resulting from this stroke will look like the swinging of a pendulum on a clock. When you use a pendulum stroke you are eliminating all unnecessary body and extremity movements from which miss-hits on the cue ball generally occur.

Another thing to be considered is where you should grip the cue. This will vary from player to player depending on physical make up and personal style (upright stance, low stance, etc.). The one thing everyone should try to practice, however, is adopting a grip that will have the forearm perpendicular to the floor as the tip contacts the cue ball (see Diagram B). Grip-ping the cue at this spot will ensure that you contact the cue ball at the cue’s most level

point (at the bottom of the pendulum arc) when executing the stroke.

Well, dear shooters; that about sums up my own viewpoints on mechanics that can help achieve better fundamentals. But just remem-ber, you’re not going to see all great players using these exact mechanics − many have developed their own ways of achieving straight and level strokes. So don’t let me, or anyone else, tell you that you absolutely have to do things this way. Only you can be the judge of what’s right for you.

Several teams are getting ready for the APA National Team Championships to be held in Las Vegas this August. Over the past month and a half APA Phoenix Metro has been qualifying teams that will be competing at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. We will be sending three 8 Ball teams, two 9 Ball teams, one Ladies Only team, 2 Masters Teams and one Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles team Gina Nowlin, League Operator for the Phoenix APA announced. The teams that represent Phoenix in Vegas will have their entries paid, rooms comped, and a little spending money to take with them. The 5 person teams all receive $1100 Cash and the doubles teams received approximately $200 in cash. The 5 player teams are the highlight of the National event with over 1600 teams competing last year. APA National Team Championships is the largest pool tour-nament in the world and is in the Guinness book of world records as such.

To qualify for this year’s National event teams compete in a series of Local Team Championship tournaments that began a year ago. At the end of each 14 week session the top teams from each division compete in the ‘Tri-Cities Event. This tournament is a two day tournament that produces 12 teams to advance to the ‘Cities’ event. After two more sessions (three in all) there will be a total of 36 teams to playoff for the three 8 ball and two 9 ball spots.

APA is the only league in the world that allows absolute beginners in the sport of billiards to compete in such a large tournament with a chance to win so much money. Over $1.6 Million is up for grabs in the APA National events, and every team that competes must have a range of skilled players from beginner to a highly skilled player. Teams consist of 8 players on a roster with 5 playing in each match. Each individual match is handicapped to give the lower ranked players a chance to win. It makes for some very interesting matchups Gina told us. When a 3 rated player is matched up against a 7 rated player they only have to win 2 games to their opponent’s 6 games.

We want to wish all the players competing in Vegas next month all the luck in the world. 8-Ball and 9-Ball teams are shown in photos below.

The Dart Thrower: Tension

By Karlheinz Zöchlingwww.dartbase.com

Dart players often complain that they have been very tense at crucial points of a match and have therefore been unable to take what advantage of what seemed to be a big opportunity for a win or a good chance to fight back. You all know these ugly situations of being on this nice double 16 in the decid-ing leg, three darts in your hand, but it simply must be in ‘cause you are down and out if you fail. Nerves are coming in. Your hand is shaking, your knees feel like melted butter in the sun, and you praise God or Buddha for just this dart to go in - but God is out for dinner at the moment, Buddha is having a meditation on his own, and so you blunder. Your opponent goes on with a smile on his face and kills his dirty 60 points left with two straight darts.

Later you think “what was go-ing on with you”. If you would

have been up with two legs you would have hit that double 16 nearly blind. Bloody nerves you say, and you are right. It’s all a matter of thinking.

If you go there with the thought on your mind that you HAVE TO HIT ‘cause otherwise you will be lost, the chance is big that you will miss. It’s that simple and that hard: Don’t think of winning or losing. Simply think of PLAYING. When I got to such an im-portant point in a match, I quietly said to myself: “simply play”. Don’t waste one single thought in the whole match on losing. Strike out this word in your mental dictionary, you won’t need it in play. Learn to control your thinking. Whenever you become aware of such a *negative* thought during a game, give yourself a short mental rest and say “Stop!”. Raise your shoulders, take a breath and stand up with full con-centration on only one thing in your mind: Play. That’s enough for most situations where you feel tense.

But sometimes your hand won’t stop shaking and you can’t find a focus on

the board. If the situation is that hard, I want to introduce you to a simple relaxation exercise which only requires a little practice. It is called “The Quiet Place”.

Take ten minutes of time to yourself, as often as you can. The best would be each day, at least once a week. Sit down and relax. Now with one hand press the thumb of the other hand. Think about a quiet place you like. This can be a tropical island where you lay down in the sun, that confortable chair in your living room or anything else you find quiet and relaxing. Keep this thought for about five or ten minutes, and keep your thumb pressed during this time. If you repeat this exercise regularly you will later only need to press the thumb of your hand at these nerve - shaking moments in a match and all tension will be gone.

On the left side of the board, Todd Dilley was smarting from an earlier loss to Main. Dilley had already won four matches and Flullen turned out to be win #5 after Dilley sent him to the rail hill-hill.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News July 2014Marshall Wins Round Robin One Pocket

A small field of players at Kolby’s handicapped one pocket event on June 7th led to a full day of round robin play.

After a first round loss to Bernie Pettipiece, Lenny Marshall knew that he would have to play perfect the rest of the day for a chance to cash at this event.

Paul Grande and Eric Young both brought undefeated 3-0 records to their match late on Saturday, and Young scored the win to take the tournament lead with a 4-0 record.

Grande then lost his match against Marshall, falling to 3-2 with Marshall still needing to play Young. A Young win would give him the tournament win and leave Grande, Pettipiece and Marshall all tied at 3-2. Marshall did away with any worries of anyone having to play a tie-breaker with his 2-0 win over Eric Young and Marshall took the tournament win due to his victory over Young in round robin play.

An Interview with Professional Player Danny Smith from Toledo, OH

By Melissa “The Viper” Little

Viper: Where were you born?

Danny: I was born in Toledo, OH in 1987.

Viper: What are your biggest accomplishments in the sport of billiards?

Danny: In 2013 I won the “Music City Open” in Nashville, TN and I defeated pro player Larry Nevel twice 11-10 both sets to win the championships. I finished 4th out of 419 play-ers at the Derby City Classic ‘Banks” division a few years ago.

Viper: Do you have a nickname yet?

Danny: They have been calling me “Shredder” for a bit because I either shred my opponents or shred my entire bankroll.

Viper: What are your short-term goals?

Danny: I’m flying home from Denver to par-ticipate in a “Thanksgiving tournament” then off to defend my title next month at the “Music City Open” in Nashville. From there I’m off to participate in the “Derby City Classic” in Louisville.

Viper: What do you do when you’re not com-peting?

Danny: On my off time I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, watching sports, movies and I love engaging in outdoor sports activities.

Viper: Do you have siblings?

Danny: I have an older sister named Lauren who plays in a weekly league.

Viper: Who got you started in playing pool?

Danny: Both my parents played in tourna-ments and leagues and I tagged along to watch as a young kid. When I was 13-14, I had a few friends that I ran around with to different tournaments. At 16, I got an opportunity to play in the Glass City Open, which had some of the best pros around playing in it. That same tournament I drew legendary Rodney Morris, the crowd was packed in the stands rooting for me, and I almost beat him. At that moment I knew I had an opportunity to move forward playing professional pool. The thrill and hav-ing everyone watch and encourage me sparked me to keep going.

Viper: What do your parents think of your pool career?

Danny: My parents always encouraged me to be one of the best, weather it was playing other sports or pool.

Viper: In your opinion, what parts of the world produce the best players?

Danny: The best pool players are from the Philippines by far because for one I have played most of them, there practice regiment is so much superior and it’s there whole liveli-hood. I admire that they take it so seriously and try hard on every shot.

Viper: Who is/was your favorite pro player growing up?

Danny: Corey Deuel because when I was just starting he was a young player. His stroke is so pure and fluid. His cue ball control is perfect and he had won so many events as a young person.

Viper: Do you currently have any sponsors?

Danny: Lomax custom cues and OB cues.

Viper: Did you ever play in a pool league?

Danny: Yes, I used to sub for my mom’s weekly league when I finally turned 18 and after that I played in a few with friends.

Viper: Are you good at any other sports?

Danny: I am talented in most sports but my favorite growing up was hockey even though throughout my childhood I played in baseball, basketball, soccer, football, golf and track.

Viper: Describe yourself in three words?

Danny: Competitive, energetic and outgoing.

Viper: If you had to live your life over again, what would one thing you change about your-self and/or your pool career?

Danny: Its unfortunate that other sports around the country have bigger purses and sometimes I wish I would have continued in another venue but loving the sport of billiards, I contin-ued doing what I love to do.

Viper: How do you prepare for events?

Danny: Two weeks prior to majors I practice between 4-6 hours per day.

Viper: What was the best advice you were ever given?

Danny: Tommy Dalfonso aka “Shorty” en-couraged me and taught me a lot of the mental aspect of the game.

Viper: What is one thing that you enjoy most while playing pool?

Danny: Travelling, meeting new people and the thrill of competing.

Viper: If you could say one thing to a young up-coming player what would it be?

Danny: Be unique and don’t copy others, be yourself and take your skill level to the best that you can be!

Viper: What’s your Favorite game?

Danny: One-pocket because you get a shot every game. You don’t see much luck in the game and playing One-Pocket forces you to be creative at times. It requires you to use most aspects of other games like banking, shooting and safeties.

Here are some Facebook questions for you

Colin Brandt asks: What’s the biggest differ-ence between pool in Colorado and Ohio?

Danny: They have better players, more tourna-ments and more competition.

Anthony Gonzales asks: What is your favorite cue and why?

Danny: I have always playing with a laminated shaft and I am a good friend with Lomax and OB cues and it was a perfect combination.

A special “Thank-you” to Danny for taking time out of his busy schedule to participate in my “Ask the Viper”.

Till next month you can find me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/melissalittleakatheviper

Does Size Matter?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Of course, I am referring to a pool table and the question “Does size matter for improv-ing your game?”. I am going to address a few questions my students ask me when they are thinking of purchasing a table for their home. First, when a student asks me since they can-not fit a 4.5 X 9 foot table into their home, should they even get one at all? Second, does playing on a bigger table make you a better player? Third, how do they figure out what size of table will fit inside their homes?

The answer to the first two questions is having any size table helps your game. The main factor in game improve-ment is correct practice and any table inside your home will equal more hours on the table. Trying to figure out which table size will fit comfortably in a house is tricky. The website http://www.brunswickbilliards.

com/helpful_information/room_size_requirements.html has a helpful chart for figuring out what you will need for each sized table. Another great way is to cut out a piece of cardboard 4.5 feet wide and 9 feet long and then place it inside the desired area and this makes for a great visual template.

In the end, size does not matter since the goal is to have fun and improve your pool game with family and friends.
