We want to give a big welcome to Thunder Pass, who joins the Az Billiard & Dart News family this month. Players on the far east side need to check them out. They are getting into the monthly tournament business with scotch doubles on the 15th. Looks like everyone is gearing up for Vegas in July. We have upcoming warm up tourneys at Stingers and River City Pockets. Look for more info in their ads. We also want to send a big congrats out to Gina and Doug Nowlin for winning the APA League Operators of the Year award. All of that hard work is being noticed by more than just Az players. The ACUI has announced that they will be holding their 2013 Collegiate Championships at Sparky’s Den on the ASU campus on June 28th - 29th. This is a great chance to see some of the stars of tomorrow competing for a prestigous title. Until next time... - Mike

Scott Frost beat his Bonus Ball teammate Manny Chau twice as part of an undefeated run through a field of thirty four players to win the Desert Classic Tour’s Arizona State One Pocket Cham-pionship at Kolby’s Corner Pocket on May 18th and 19th.

While Frost’s one pocket ability has never been questioned, some might have been surprised to see Chau playing deeply into a one pocket event against the best that Arizona has to offer. Chau’s success at the event on this weekend came down to his ball-making ability. Chau may not have the tactical experience that others have in one pocket, but when given an opening at the table, Chau does not miss.

Chau went through his Saturday matches with wins over Pete Lhotka, Dennis Orender and Len-ny Marshall; and started off Sunday play with a win over Bernie Pettipiece. While that match was happening, Frost was sending Tres Kane to the one loss side to earn his place against Chau for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, eight players were trying to keep their tournament hopes alive on Sunday. Mike Pankoff eliminated Jim Galati, Eric Young beat Lenny Marshall, Dennis Orender defeated Brian Reich and Bobby Emmons took advantage of a forfeit against California’s Kenny Thoma-son.

Young then beat Pankoff and Orender ended Em-mons’ tournament.

Young kept his hopes alive by eliminating Tres Kane in 5th place. Joining Tres in 5th place was Dennis Orender, after a loss to Bernie on the left side of the board.

Back on the right side of the board, Frost made quick work of Chau 3-0 and took his place in the hot-seat.

Bernie would face off against Chau on the one loss side after eliminat-ing Eric Young in 4th place.

Bernie seemed to have no answer for Chau’s ball-making in their semi-final match as Manny scored three quick 8-0 game wins to eliminate Bernie in 3rd place.

Frost took early control of the final race to five and held a quick 4-1 lead. Considering he had beaten Chau in seven of their last eight games, Frost might have taken his foot off the gas a little bit and Chau quickly won two games to get back within one at 4-3. Chau’s two game winning streak seemed to get Frost’s attention as he re-focused on the task at hand and won the next game for the 5-3 win and yet another Arizona State One Pocket Championship for the Freezer.

The Desert Classic Tour will be back in action on June 1st and 2nd on the 7’ Diamond tables at Stingers in Phoenix.

Final Payouts:1st Scott Frost $8802nd Manny Chau $4653rd Bernie Pettipiece $3054th Eric Young $1805th Dennis Orender $1005th Tres Kane $1007th Bobby Emmons $707th Mike Pankoff $70

Flores & Briggs Split at Knobbys

Junior Flores and Joe Briggs split 1st and 2nd place at Knobby’s monthly 8-Ball event on May 3rd.

This month, the field included two of Vegas’ top female players as Stacy Allsup and Rebecca Wagner were in town for another event over the weekend.

Flores and Briggs met up for the hot-seat and Briggs won that match 2-1.

On the one loss side, Wagner was recovering from an earlier loss to Flores and had already eliminated Sutherland and Ed Scott. She would not get her revenge on Flores on this night as he won their match and sent Rebecca to the rail in third place.

Considering the late hour, Flores and Briggs decided on a split instead of play-ing out their match.

Complete Payouts:1st Joe Briggs $2351st Junior Flores $2353rd Rebecca Wagner $1004th Ed Scott $505th Ben Sutherland $205th Joe Farias $20

John Pegnam came back from an early loss to ride the one loss side and win the Slikster 8’s & Under 9-Ball event at Metro Sportz Bar on May 4th.

This event had to be considered a rousing suc-cess with a full field of 64 players pre-paid two weeks before the first rack was played. There were enough players on the waiting list that a second tournament was played on the 9’ tables with a field of twenty five players where JR Burkhart took first place.

Although many pundits didn’t think the event could be played in two days, Jaz was able to play the entire event in just one fourteen hour day.

The winners side of this event came down to Las Vegas’ Rebecca Wagner and Eric Lervold. Nei-ther player had an easy route through the win-ners side as Wagner had notable wins over Jason Sweet, Tenadore Lee and Justin Wethington. Le-rvold had notable wins over Hopell Ampongan, Eric Lacey and Amado Martinez to his credit.

The hot-seat match saw Wagner take a quick 3-0 lead, only to see that lead evaporate in a 5-5 loss to Lervold in their 6-5 race.

On the one loss side, two players were both in the midst of long winning streaks. John Pegnam had lost midday to Jonny M, but had put together a five match winning streak. Outdoing Pegnam, Jason Sweet had lost his first match of the day and put together an eight match winning streak of his own.

One of these players would have to see their winning streak end, and that player would be Jason Sweet. Sweet appeared to run out of gas

and Pegnam took advantage of every opportunity he was given. Pegnam held a 3-1 lead when Sweet would shoot at his last ball. Pegnam won that rack for a 4-1 lead and proceeded to break and run the final two racks for a 6-1 victory.

Next up for Pegnam was Rebecca Wagner. John kept up his strong play and took an early 4-0 lead in their race to six match. Pegnam was playing a very calculated game as he very seldom took on a shot that he didn’t like. When faced with a tough shot, he would play an even tougher safety and leave Wagner with nothing to shoot at. Wag-ner was finally able to win a game at 4-1 and she put together a run of her own to knot the match at 4-4 with her usual strong shotmaking and position play. Wagner picked the worst time to scratch on the break as she gave control of the table to Pegnam in the 9th rack and he regained the lead at 5-4. Wagner was on her way to tying the match up again when she missed a ball late in the run and was forced to watch Pegnam finish off the case rack for a 6-4 win.

The final double elimination match between Pegnam and Lervold saw Pegnam continue with his careful play from the last match on his way to what looked to be an insurmountable 5-0 lead in the first set. One game away from the finish line, Pegnam stumbled and Lervold won three straight games for a 5-3 scoreline. Lervold was not able to continue his comeback though, as Pegnam won the next game to take the first set 6-3.

The two players agreed to a split at that time, but played

one game to determine a tournament winner. With the pressure off and the game only being played for the trophy, neither player had their “A game”, but it was Pegnam who finally pocketed the final 9-ball for the tournament trophy.

Next up in the Slikster series of events is 16 & under scotch doubles 9-Ball at Metro on June 15th (re-scheduled so as to not run against the Desert Classic Tour stop on June 1st.)

Complete Payouts:1st John Pegnam $1,6131st Eric Lervold $1,1633rd Rebecca Wager $4814th Jason Sweet $2435th Justin Wethington $655th Amado Martinez $657th Luke Haggerty $407th Jason Polk $40

Pankoff Wins Kolby’s One PocketMike Pankoff put in a great performance and won the Kolby’s One Pocket Tourna-ment on May 25th.

It was a smaller than normal field, but it made up for the low quantity with very high quality play-ers and play. All but one player in the field was ten rated or better and it was hard to pick an early favorite.

Az One Pocket State Champion Scott Frost found out just how strong the field was as he dropped his first two matches and was sent to the sidelines to watch the rest of the event.

The winners side saw Bobby Emmons defeat Bernie Pettipiece for the hot-seat 2-0.

On the one loss side, it was Mike Pankoff sending players home. Pankoff elimi-nated Rod Elliott, Manny Chau and then Pettipiece to setup the final match with Emmons.

Pankoff looked in control during the finals and scored a decisive 3-1 win for first place.

Az APA Operators Win Prestigous Award

Any reader of this paper can see that the local American Poolplayers Associa-tion (APA) league operators are more than busy with events in various parts of the valley. The main APA office has also taken notice of the hard work by Doug and Gina Nowlin, and have named the pair as the League Operators of the Year for Level 5 markets.

The APA splits their league systems into five markets based on the population of the league area, with Level 5 being for an area with a population over 1,600,000 million people.

Doug commented that he and Gina knew they were nominated but hadn’t even prepared a speech as they didn’t think they had any chance to win the award. “No one was more surprised than we were when they called our names.” he said. While the award might have come as a surprise to the Nowlin’s, local APA league players were certainly not surprised.

In addition to a nice trophy, Doug and Gina received a check for $1,000 from the APA.

Dr. Cue Holds Az Clinic

Tom “Dr Cue” Rossman made an Arizona appearance on May 20th to put on a private clinic at local player Will Sexton’s home.

Eight local players attended the clinic and spent three hours learning from this forty year veteran of the game.

The clinic was arranged by local player James Main and hosted at Will Sexton’s home. “This is my second time going through Dr. Cues lessons. My game has improved significantly over the last 2 years including back to back 17th place finishes at APA nationals. If you ever get the opportunity to attend one of his clinics I highly recommend it.” commented Sexton after the event.

Interested players can get more info on Rossman’s clinics at http://www.drcuepromotions.com/

The “On the Road to Vegas” Tour continued in May with the APA National Team Champion-ships to be held in Las Vegas this upcoming August.

Over the weekend of May 18th and 19th APA held its 9 ball Local Team Championships at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 32 Teams com-peted for a chance to go to Vegas and compete in the National event. One team was left standing at the end of the weekend and will receive their entry fee and rooms paid along with $1100 in cash to spend when they get there. But it doesn’t end there. Winning teams at the National event will receive cash and awards totaling more than $1million. Teams consist of from 5 to 8 players ranging in skill level from a complete beginner to a seasoned player with many years under their belt. Gina Nowlin, the APA Phoenix league op-erator, says this is a really great way for someone who plays for fun and recreation to go to Las Vegas and compete fairly in a major tournament, and get paid for it. Everything is based on a handicap system that allows even the most nov-ice of players to have a good chance of winning their match and help their team advance in the tournament. Gina said, we have players going to Vegas this year that have only been playing pool for a couple of months. How great is that!

Throughout the year APA runs a series of tour-naments called “On the Road to Vegas”. This series of tournaments includes Singles, Doubles, and 5 player Team events that allow the win-ners the chance to go to Las Vegas and represent Phoenix in the APA National Team Champion-ships. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… I’m proud to announce the winner of the 30th AZPL State Championship held at Stinger’s Sports Bar is J.R. Jordan, Ryan Levengood & Scott Gwil-liam of The El Diablos from Jester’s Billiards! They tore through five teams, losing only 9 games, in route to a 5-0 record, winning $1500 along the way! Their first opponent was DRBJ. Ryan led it off with his first of four 10-0s in the tournament, this one Vs Rob Turner. J.R. & Scott followed that with a pair of wins to take a 30-10 lead. In the second round DRBJ scratched out 19 points with Rob winning his game but the Diablos scored 27 to take a 57-29 lead into the final round. Rob once again won his game but Ryan scored his second 10-0 to complete the 30 to put away the match after 8 games. The final score was 74-39.

In their second match they faced off against Doc’s Gang, who went 13-1 this season. After two games the score was 17-16 after trading wins but it was all El Diablos after that as they rattled off four straight wins including a 10-0 by Ryan Vs Doc Rogers and a 10-1 by Scott Vs Doug Molhook to win the match in 6 games with a 57-28 victory.

Their third and final match on Saturday was against Team Ram Rod, who had just gone on a winning streak of their own. It started out the same with all three winning their first games, taking a 30-16 lead into the 2nd round. And they would need it as they were outscored 24-16 with Brady Williams scoring a 10-0 against Scott to finish with a 46-40 lead. It would be the only round they lose throughout the tournament. The teams scored 16-15 in the next two games giving The El Diablos a 62-55 lead heading into the finalgame. Scott promptly scored the necessary 3 to seal the deal to take the win in what would be their closest match.

On Sunday The El Diablos would return at 2pm to face off against Balls in Hand in what would be the first of two matches against them. In the opening round Pete Williams and Harold Lyons combined for a pair of wins to take a 20-13 lead after two games but the Diablos won the next three to take a 43-34 lead after five. They lost the next one but won the next two by a score of 20-8 to finish the match after 8 games with a 69-52 score, sending Balls in Hand to face off against No Name.

After watching their future opponents for the next two hours in a 66-62 nailbiter it was back to business! Ryan went on a 20-2 run Vs Pete & Harold to lead the way as The El Diablos won 6 straight games to win the match 60-28! Talk about a debut! Welcome to the league boys!

The 30th AZPL State Championships and 10th Anniversary Celebration began at Stinger’s on May 3rd at 7pm! To kick off the festivities we enjoyed a huge sheet cake that was decorated with the Cactus Couple! If you missed it you missed out as it was delicious! We had three different events going on on Friday night, all of which started at 8. The MVP Singles Tournament had a full field of 16 players playing for $120 & a free season in the league. Robert Berry became the first 3x champion beating out J.R. Jordan, Marko Robles, Anthony Begay and Cathy Beyale twice, once for the hot seat and the second time in the finals. Finishing 2nd, Cathy won $80 and Gary Wimmer won $40 for taking 3rd place.

For the summer season we’ll be expanding this tournament to 32 players, paying $200 for 1st place down to $50 for 4th based on a full field.

There were 11 teams in the scotch doubles

tournament. After a 1st round bye Harold Lyons & Barry Dire defeated Curtis Neal & Anthony Tomei, Lance Tucker & Jim Green and Bob Ryan & Cecil Attson to take the hot seat. It was Lance & Jim who returned for a rematch but once again Harold & Barry won, sweeping their series 4-0 to win $80 and get 50% off their dues this season! Lance & Jim won $50 and Bob & Cecil took home $30 in 3rd.

We opened up 8-Ball Break & Run Derby to anyone and had 29 par-ticipants! In the opening round it was Kip Ander-son in the lead with 22 points. Chris Miller was right behind with 20. There were 20 players who made it to round two with 4 being the cut-off to make it. After scoring 22 in the previous round, Kip scored just 3 for a total of 25. Chris added another 17 points to take the lead with 37. Eugene matched his first round score with another 17 points to come in 2nd with 34. This time the cut off was 20 as ten more players got eliminated. In the third round it was all Eugene as he scored 40 consecu-tive points to set a single round record as well as finish with 74 points, also a record, to finish 1st. Chris scored 9 to get a final score of 46, good enough for 2nd place. Kip held on with 7 to get 32 to take the 3rd and final spot. In the final round Kip led off with a 7. It wasn’t enough as Chris went on to run the table, scoring all 17 points.Nothing went in on the next break, ending the run with 17 points. Eu-gene went next and it was more of the same. Ran out all 17 points but missed on the next break to finish in a tie! In the playoff round Chris scored 6 before missing but as we saw earlier that would be no match for Eugene as he quickly ran out 7 balls before stopping to take the win! He won $40 in cash & a $50 credit! Chris won $25 & a $35 credit and Kip got $15 & a $15 credit.

To finish the night Jaded came down from Globe and rocked the house! Once again they brought a great selection of tunes to jam out the night! Listening to the crowd they were definitely enjoyed by all! Thanks for coming down and playing Jean!

At 9am Saturday the Wild Card teams began play. Ev-ery team in the tournament wins cash with the bottom four getting $30 each. Considering there is no entry, you’re ranked 32nd and you just went 0-2 to get $30 is fair. Every round the prize money went up with 24 teams picking up up to $125 on Saturday.

The final 8 teams came back on Sunday. Finishing tied for 7th was the Four Kings & DRBJ who each won $200. 5th place went to Team Ram Rod and Dazed &

Confused who each took home $300. Finishing in 4th place was the Elk Hunters, who won $400.

Winning $500 for 3rd place was No Name. Balls in Hand won $750 for their 2nd place finish and of course, $1,500 went to The El Diablos for 1st Place!

Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated with us at the Championships at Stingers! It was another great time and like always, I can’t wait for the next one! Thanks to Jen, Dave, Will, Darren and everyone else who helped out over the week-end. Thanks to Dale and the staff at Stinger’s for a great weekend! And thanks to everyone of you who have participated in the league over the past 10 years. Without each of you this never could have happened and for that I thank you! It’s been a wonderful decade and I look forward to many more as your league operator!

Mike, your darts aren’t as good as they used to be. It is hard to want to play like you used to?

To say that my darts aren’t what they used to be is the big-gest understatement ever. They suck compared to what I used to shoot.

In the 80’s, I feel that I was the best soft tip player in Arizona. When we went to Las Vegas to play in 1990 for the World Championship, I finished sec-ond in the world to John Gray as he won the championship. That that, I still played good - shooting in the 4’s and averag-ing about 33 ppd in 01. Played some great darts at time, but was never as consistent as I was in the 80’s.

The first season that we played Masters on the Arachnid boards, I shot a 4.48 and my team won the league. That same year, myself and Rick

Kerska finished 2nd in the World in Master’s 501.

The last year has been tough as my darts have really fallen off, but for the first time in over a year, the pain in my shoulder is gone. At least for a few days.

It is very hard to play when you are used to shooting a lot better. The worst is the new players wondering how the heck I made the Hall of Fame shoot-ing the way that I am. I was always a consistent player and now it is “hit this, miss that”.

I still love the game as much as ever and understand that to get anywhere near what I shot in the past, I will have to work very hard. So to close, I hate letting partners down and will do everything I can to get my game back. This is what I think and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Ask Mike

This month our city lost two Police Officers and one Fire Fighter. The Arizona 100 Club is a great organization that helps the families of the fallen officers and firefighters.

At Bull Shooters, we believe in helping in any way we can, so we put some great raffle prizes together - including a 32” flat screen TV - and held a $1000 dart tournament over the Memorial Day weekend. All week, our pa-trons purchased tickets and we had forty players show up for the dart tourna-ment.

Two of Az’s best players drew each other and were going to be tough to beat. Bob Castillo and Kix Alcala can beat anyone in the country, so they were go-ing to be the overwhelming favorites. Several teams have them a run, includ-ing JC Martinez and Terry Deguise, but it was not to be in the end.

Tom McCartney and Mark Rhodes played great and took third with Dave Hild and Van Williams finishing second. The top six teams all got cash, with a total payout of $1,022.

We had one ladies team that shot great and earned some side cash. Suzi Smith and Alvi Dubose played great winning three matches and shooting great darts.

It was a fun time and made even better by Richard Bernal, who came out on his own time to take great photos for the players to keep.

DartsLive & A Reproducible Throw

Well, it’s been a super busy last two months and thats why I missed getting an article done last month. I am just preparing to leave back to Hong Kong for the third time in 6 weeks for the DARTSLIVE WORLD events which brings me to the first thing I will talk about.

Finally, America has its first Soft-Tip Dart tour in DART-SLIVE AMERICA. The first event is being held up in my old stopping grounds of Kent (Seattle) Washington on July 19th weekend. This will be the first stop of 4 events held this year with the other three being in Madison Wisconsin Aug 3rd, then Virginia Beach Va. Oct 19th and the final event will be in Honolulu Hawaii Nov 16th.

Each event will pay $5000 for 1st, $3500 2nd, $1500 top 4, $1000 top 8 and $500 for the top 16 players! To be honest, other than the first prize the money is better on this tour

than the WORLD TOUR; especially if you factor in the cost difference. Also, the top 4 players off the tour get a cash bonus of $5000 for 1st $3000 for 2nd 2000 for 3rd and $1000 for 4th. Not bad for the first year, and the way DARTSLIVE is taking off in Phoenix, I am willing to bet we see a tour stop here next year when it expands!

Don’t forget there is The WORLD Stage 6 held in Las Vegas in Septem-ber which is a great event for players of all levels.

So, I have been helping a few players of late and there is a common theme with newer or lower rated players. They don’t develop a reproducible throw. This means that they throw each dart differently and think of ways to “ADJUST”. See, the thing is I NEV-ER make a conscious thought to adjust anything other than becoming smooth-er. I say it all the time “Develop a throw you can repeat so your hand and your eye will then begin to start work-ing together without you needing to make the adjustment!”

It cracks me up when I help someone develop a smoother, longer throw then five minutes later they are right back to their old habits because “ I could not hit anything that way”. Ummm HEL-LO McFly, you were not hitting any-thing the other way either. If you want to be good at darts or even just better at darts, you need to realize that you have to develop a good throw AND THEN learn to use it to hit targets.

If you just worry about hitting more bulls with some magical one eyed hopped throw, then you are going to be where you are now forever. If you learn to throw the dart smoother, longer and the exact same way each time, then your hand-eye coordina-tion will begin to develop, leading you to get better. All of it takes time and effort to be better but it all starts with the foundation of a REPRODUCIBLE THROW, not short stroking with three different release points.

So take some time to back-up to get ahead. Pro golfers will still put clubs down to do drills to check their align-ment, put beach balls in their knees

to work on rotation etc…. the point is that pros always do the things that made them pros; they work on the fundamentals just as much as they do work on playing practice games.

Just food for thought.

Todd Dilley Wins Kitty’s 7’s & Under

Todd Dilley came back to avenge his only loss and win Kitty’s 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on May 11th.

Dilley and Pete Williams both made their way through the eleven player field to play for the hot-seat, but Dilley would find himself on the wrong side of a lopsided 6-1 scoreline.

On the left side of the board, Johnny Garcia had just eliminated Eric Lervold and faced off against Dilley to see who would play Williams in the finals. Al-though the final score read 7-3, Dilley’s win over Garcia was much closer than the score indicated.

The final double elimination match saw Dilley earn his revenge and double dip Williams 7-4 and 7-3 to take first place in the event.

Stinger’s Triple Split

Stingers Sports Bar saw a rare triple split at their May 8’s & Under 9-Ball tour-nament as Ken Gouso, Tenadore Lee and Jason Polk negotiated a split in lieu of playing out the last two (or three) matches.

To set up the split, Gouso took the hot-seat with an 8-6 win over Jason Polk. Polk struggled with his game in this match, and Gouso was more than happy to take advantage of the chances that Polk gave him.

Polk moved to the left side of the board and found Tenadore Lee waiting. Ten has lost his second round match Mike Hamman, but won six straight matches on the left side of the board.

Before the semi-final match could get underway, the three players came together and discussed a possible split. Gouso was in none of the side pots, so he knew his potential payday was limited. Polk and Ten were happy to agree to the split instead of playing the rest of the event.

Complete Payouts:1st Ken Gouso $5501st Jason Polk $4801st Tenadore Lee $4804th John Cassidy $705th Mike Lalumiere / Burt Balancad $30

WPBL Announces Second Alternates

In an attempt to allow more Bonus Ball players to compete in major events dur-ing the upcoming season, the World Professional Billiard League has announced a round of second alternates for each time.

The Phoenix Fire proudly welcome barbox specialist Jesse Bowman to the team. Bowman will join team regulars Scott Frost, Tommy Kennedy and Manny Chau, as well as first alternate Marc Vidal. Team captain Scott Frost commented “With an exciting 24 second clock, Jesse’s quick thinking and powerful shot-making will set the roof of the WPBL arena on file!”.

Arizona’s young gun Mitch Ellerman also found a place on Jeremy Jones’ Houston Hustlers team where he will join Jones, Chip Compton, Justin Hall and Joey Gray.

The season gets underway May 30th and the Phoenix Fire season begins on June 1st as they take on the Minnesota Outlaws. The remainder of the month sees Phoenix playing the Las Vegas Dice on June 8th, the Pittsburgh Poison on June 9th, the Miami Cruise on June 14th and the Pittsburgh Poison again on June 15th.

All matches can be watched online at www.wpbltv.com

What Would A Sucker Do?

By Jacqueline KarolHouse Pro at Oasis Billiards, Bar & Grill in Chico, California

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!

You are playing 9-ball and you have ball-in-hand. What do you do?

Idea #1: “Bank the 1-ball in the corner pocket!”

Idea #2: “Play safe by trying to put the 2-ball between the cue ball and 1-ball!”

Suckers…

Why aren’t these the best ideas?

Idea #1: It is very unlikely that you will pocket this ball and if you miss your penalty is huge. You will most likely sell out and your op-ponent will win especially with the 9-ball hanging in the jaws and the 2-ball is so close to it that you will probably leave them an easy combo or carom.

Idea #2: This is a better idea than Idea #1 but why do that when you could easily win the game right now?

Answer:

This is an easy follow shot. Just set up the cue ball on a straight line through the 1-ball and 9-ball, hit with high English and pocket the 9-ball and win!
