Never let it be said that I can’t admit when I am wrong. With that being said, I would like to personally congratulate the three Eastside teams for their victory over the Westside at the East/West Challenge. As the captain of the 7’s team, it was especially tough to witness the beatdown that the Eastside teams laid down. Nice shooting (and captaining to John Marquis) to all of you.
And with “that” out of the way, April 23rd is the date for the 2nd Saguaro Cup. Go Westside!!!
Congratulations to Bernie Store for her win in Vegas in late March. Nice to see our players getting out there and showing off just how well we play in Arizona.
-Until next time Mike

Burt & Pete Split at Knobbys
Burt Balancad and Pete Barrios played once, and that was enough, as they de-cided to split Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-Ball tournament on March 4th.
Balancad and Barrios made their ways through the winner’s bracket, meeting up for the hot-seat, which was won by Barrios.
On the left side of the board, Balancad found Frank Alvarez looking for a little revenge. It had been Balancad that sent Alvarez to the one loss side, and Alvarez had won four matches to earn a shot at redemption in the semi-finals. Balancad shot Alvarez down again, forcing Frank to settle for third place.
With the late hour, Burt and Pete agreed on a split of first and second place.
Complete Payouts:1st Pete Barrios $1802nd Burt Balancad $1803rd Frank Alvarez $504th Sophia Morquecho $20

They’ve gathered every year since 2010 to play 9-ball for The Shade Tree, a Las Vegas shelter for women, children and their pets. This year, 36 women came together on the weekend of March 26-27 at the Rum Runner Tropicana in Las Vegas, and between $10 entry-fee donations and raffles, they raised about $6,800 to benefit The Shade Tree. The Western Women’s 9-Ball Charity, a handicapped event, is generally the third tournament, every year, hosted by The Rum Runner in March, and is preceded by the Doc Hill Memorial Tournament for B players and the Andy Mercer Memorial for A players.
At this 7th annual women’s charity challenge, Bernie Store, a regular on the Arizona Women’s Tour and Gina Quinones battled three times to claim the event title. Store took two out of three in a double elimination final to win it.
They met first in the hot seat match. Store had sent Shirell Ivey to the loss side in a double hill match, as Quinones was busy sending Robin Verner west 5-2. In a double hill hot seat match, Quinones survived, sending Store to the semifi-nals.
On the loss side, Ivey picked up Anne Carmona, who’d defeated Gina Valerio, double hill, and Trinh Lu 4-4 to reach her (Lu, racing to 6). Verner drew Katy Moore, who’d gotten by Amy Kane 5-2 and Debra Aarens 5-3. Verner elimi-nated Moore 5-2 and in the quarterfinals, faced Carmona, who’d handed Ivey her second straight loss 4-1.
Verner took the quarterfinal match 5-1 for a shot at Store in the semifinals. An apparently deter-mined Bernie Store shut Verner out 6-0 for her own second shot against Quinones in the hot
seat. Store took that shutout momentum into the open-ing set of the true double elimination final, allowing Quinones only a single rack and forcing a second set. Quinones chalked up two more racks in the second set, but Store got her six to claim the event title.
Tournament representatives thanked Gino and Gordie Hill, owners of the Rum Runner Tropicana and their staff for their hospitality, as well as thanking sponsors the Vegas TAP Pool League, APA Las Vegas, BCA Pool League, USAPL, Pool Tools, Vegas Billiards Buzz, CSI, Fargo Rate, Long Horn Casino, the All City BCAPL, and Southern Nevada 9-Ball Tavern Owners’ Association.

It all started last year with the Saguaro Cup, the Eastside’s domination of the Westside in head to head team challenges. There were hopes amongst the Westside’s players that this domination would end on March 5th at the East vs West Shootout at Skip and Jan’s, but those hopes were quickly put to rest after another dominating Eastside performance and a sweep of all three divisions.
This event, created by Abie Padilla and Chuck Bower, saw six player teams of 6’s, 7’s and 8’s representing their side of town on the 9’ tables. Players were not necessarily representing the side of town that they lived in, but more repre-senting the side of town that they played out of. The event was modeled on the Mosconi Cup with team, scotch and singles matches being contested.
Things did not start well for the Westside, as the 7’s were done playing first in the day. The Eastside team of Heather Torpin-Cortez, Chris Carpenter, Brian DeSantis, Harry McKee, Luke Willkom, David Linke and non-playing cap-tain John Marquis basically had their way with the Westside squad of Amanda Pulley, Mike Ramirez, Brian McGee, Jon Driver, Tony Page, Joe Chyzy and non-playing captain Mike Howerton. The Eastside team jumped on the team from the Westside and never let up. Driver and Chyzy were able to score singles match wins for the Westside, but that was the only positives for the day as the Eastside team ran over the Westside team 11-2.
The match between the 6 rated teams was closer, but still saw an Eastside win. The Eastside team of Sandeep Sharma, Jeremy Zastrow, Brandon Hinners, Randell Moore, Chuck Bower and Tim Benally started out with a win in the full team event, and then increased their lead to 2-0 with Sharma and Bower’s scotch win over Donna Taylor and Junior Carrizosa. The Westside team of Tay-lor, Carrizosa, Mike Nevarez, Abie Padilla, Tyler Williams and Shane O’Dell came back with two wins and tied things at 2-2, before the Eastside pushed back out to a 5-3 lead. The Eastside would not give up that lead, although the West-side team did get back within one match at 6-5. The Eastside team got to the hill at 10-5, but singles wins from Carrizosa and Tyler Williams got the Westside team back to 10-7 before Tim Benally scored the final match win for the East-side. The final score was 11-7 to the Eastside.
Although it was even closer, the match between the 8 rated teams saw the East-side complete it’s clean sweep of the Westside. The Eastside squad of Junior Flores, Joey Barrera, Evan Brinkman, Eric Lervold, Justin Smith and Greg Brown started things out with a 6-5 win in the full team event. The Westside team (Oz Avila, George Bell, Scott Chadwick, Manny Luevano, Crash Red-
din and Bernie Store) won the next two matches for the first Westside lead at 2-1. The Eastside team didn’t take trailing well, and quickly won three straight matches for a 4-2 lead, but the Westside then fought back for four wins and a 6-4 lead. The next four matches were split between the two teams, leading to an 8-6 Westside lead, going into the singles matches. Flores and Barrera both won their matches and things were tied at 8-8. Bernie Store defeated Evan Brinkman to give the Westside the lead back at 9-8, but Greg Brown tied things back up at 9-9 after his win over Crash Reddin. The Eastside found themselves on the hill after Lervold’s 5-1 win over Chadwick. Manny Luevano defeated Justin Smith in their singles match to tie things at 10-10, but the Eastside won the final team matchup 6-1 for the 11-10 Eastside win.
All in all, the day featured competitive play from all of the competitors, that helped to continue the friendly East/West rivalry that is growing with each one of these events. That rivalry will move to the Westside in April, when the 2nd Annual Saguaro Cup is played at Bullshooters on April 23rd. Come on out and witness the spectacle. If last year is any indication, it will be a crazy day.

My Opponent Just Had The Match of Their Life Against MeBy Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor
On reflection I could not do anything right in that match and it seemed like my opponent could do nothing wrong. How many times has this hap-pen to you? What do you do next, after the match or event? Most players lick their wounds and wonder why they ever decided to play this silly game. Some players try to figure out what they did wrong and review these three main areas: Mental, Physical, Fundamentals.
Let us look at these one at a time. The mental game is a wide-open area and we can get lost easy and chase our tails if we are not careful. Re-member the game of pool is 90% mental. That covers a lot of ground. The biggest area in this category is confidence. A player that plays confi-dent wins more games and matches.
Next area, physical. Was something hurt or out of place in your game? The slightest back strain can change alignment.
Finally, a lot of training books wrote by the game’s best tell us funda-mentals are the key to this game. When you watch matches on youtube and find the CSI channel you see many what I like to call “runaway” matches and even super players miss simple shots. The champion’s hand each other runaway matches. I often think how a champion cannot win more than two games or sometimes no games in a longer set.
Now that the reflection is completed and maybe you found an adjust-ment, maybe not. I would say most of the time nothing was wrong. One huge mistake I see players make is to try too change to many things at once. Just rack up the next set and compete at your highest level and you will be on the correct side of a runaway match more often than not.

APA players met at the Westgate Hotel and Casi-no in Las Vegas on March 17th through the 20th, where 10 teams from Phoenix joined 240 other teams from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada for the 2016 8 Ball Southwest Chal-lenge Tournament. Three player teams from all over the Southwest competed for over $25,000 in Cash at this popular annual event. This year for the first time a Scotch Doubles event was held at the same time. Besides the two main events, Mini tournaments were also available to play in all weekend long. The Southwest Challenge is a 3-person team event along with a 2-person scotch doubles event at the same time. In March it’s 8 ball with a 9 Ball Scotch Doubles event. In October they hold the 9 Ball 3-man team event alongside an 8 Ball Scotch Doubles. It’s a great way for players from all over the Southwest to meet up a couple of times a year and have a great time. There are players from Phoenix who have met lifetime friends there and continue to con-nect every year. Everyone had a great time playing in both the main event and the all night mini tournaments. There were vendors there to take care of the player’s equipment and accessories, as well as souvenirs from the event.

AZPL March Highlights
Briseno Wins One Pocket Madness
Gus Briseno took the long way, but he still found his way to the winner’s circle at Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on March 12th.
Briseno took a much earlier than expected trip to the west side of the board, after dropping a match to Bobby Emmons. Emmons would lose to Jim Galati, as just part of Jim’s path to the hot-seat. He would win the hot-seat match 2-1 over Rod Elliott.
On the one loss side, Briseno was on a roll. A 2-1 win over Mitch Ellerman was followed by by a 2-0 win over Elliott in the semi-final match.
Briseno didn’t let anything stop him when he got to the finals, as he dispatched Galati 3-0 for first place.
Complete Payouts:1st Gus Briseno $230 3rd Rod Elliott $1102nd Jim Galati $170 4th Mitch Ellerman $70

PJ Undefeated at Kolbys
A smaller than normal field of players at Kolbys’ 8 & Under One Pocket event on March 26th resulted in a round robin win for Percival “PJ” Jauregui.
The field of six players faced off in race to three matches, and PJ was near per-fect, only dropping one game each to Nick Kline and Junior Flores.
With his undefeated match score and 15-2 game score, PJ was far and away the first place finisher.
Second place went to Nick Kline, who only lost a match to PJ. Kline turned in a 13-6 game score for the day.

Team Craft raced to the hot-seat, which they took with a 6-4 (hill-hill) win over Scott Vogelsberg & Kathryn Christianson.
Scott & Kathryn ran into a buzz-saw on the one loss side. Burt Balancad & Sophia Morquecho had lost their first match of the day, but won their next four. Team Sophia kept their winning streak alive with a 6-2 win in their 6-5 race against Scott & Kathryn.
The finals were a rare “even race” as both teams were within 4 points of each other in Fargorate. That match would go one set with Team Craft scoring the 5-2 win for first place.

Nevarez Top 6 at Skip and Jan’s
Mike Nevarez suffered an early loss to Kirk Jewel, but was still the last man standing at Skip & Jan’s 6 & Under combination 8-ball/9-ball event on March 26th. This unique event saw players playing 9-ball on the 9’ table on the win-ner’s side, and barbox 8-ball on the one loss side.
The hot-seat in this tournament went to Jeff Lenschow, who scored a 4-1 win over John Chavez.
Nevarez looked like a different player when he started playing barbox 8-ball on the one loss side. After a 1-1 match record (5-5 game record) in big table 9-ball, Nevarez won six 8-ball matches with a combined game score of 18-2.
Nevarez defeated Becky Onnembo, Phil Anderson, Bob Hillen, James Diaz, Chavez and Lenschow. Nevarez defeated Lenschow 4-3 on the big tables, and 3-0 on the smaller tables.
In addition to prize money at this event, Carl Stewart of the Az Billiard Acad-emy donated two hour lessons to three lucky competitors. Those winners were Jules Ray, Becky Onnembo and Phil Anderson.

Finding A Formula For Consistency
By Roger LongCertified Instructor
The only thing many players do with any consistency is to complain about their inconsis-tency. They’re talking about the inconsistency in their games, of course, so that’s what we’re going to focus on in this article.
To start, let me say that I believe consistency is the product of two components, combined – and those two components are confidence and concentration. Confidence is your own self-awareness that you possess the necessary skills to perform difficult tasks, and concentration is a matter of paying close attention to the execu-tion of those tasks.
That all sounds simple enough, but it actually just raises more questions. Like, how does one develop this confidence, aka self-awareness? Well, let’s find out.
Let’s say you selected one difficult shot and then practiced it over and over, day after day, until you could make that shot ten times out of ten in practice. Now wouldn’t it be per-fectly logical to expect to execute that same shot in competition with the same degree of success? That’s confidence. But then again, that’s confidence in only that one shot. To have overall confidence, you have to practice all the shots. And to have lasting confidence, you
have to practice all the shots all the time. Plus, you should keep in mind that practicing a shot doesn’t mean just pocketing the ball, it also means getting shape for the next shot.
Once you’ve gained the degree of skill neces-sary to bring on full confidence, you have to remember to concentrate. But what does it mean to concentrate? Simply put, it means to keep your eyes on the table and your mind on the game. Shut out distractions. How? Just don’t think about them. As a matter of fact, you won’t be thinking about much of anything when you’re concentrating best. And that’s when you’ll be playing your best pool. You’ll be totally immersed in the game, seeing every-thing, feeling everything, doubting nothing, missing nothing, and enjoying every minute of the contest. Pool players call that being in dead stroke.
Dead stroke is a unique and elusive state of mind, so don’t expect to enter that state often. All conditions have to be perfect to get into genuine dead stroke. Unless, that is, you want to get there by using mind altering substances, which is a practice that makes finding dead stroke considerably easier. But even without that particular aide, a high degree of concentra-tion should be expected at all times by accom-
plished players. They should not be having to remind themselves how to shoot. They should not be doubting what to do and how to do it. Instead, they should be shutting their conscious minds off and allowing their sub-conscious minds and their bodies to work together to do the job they have been trained to do. To ignore everything except the game at hand is true concentration.
So there you have it, a formula for consistency. Let’s call it C1+C2=C3, or Confidence + Con-centration = Consistency. If you have studied, practiced and gained experience, your level of confidence should be high. If your level of confidence is high, concentration should come easy. And if you’re confident and you concen-trate, you should be consistent.

By Jim King
Let the Leagues Begin…Come one, come all valley foosers as the 2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League has launch dates of April 12th and 13th, depending which conference your team resides. And since the league will be starting that means the Interim League is wrapping up its final couple of weeks. In addition, get the latest scoop on how our state players fared against the rest of the field at the 2016 Hall of Fame Classic held at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas held March 9-13.
Interim League/Saturday ScrimmagesThis season’s Interim League has been very successful in terms of the number of players participating (77), the number of events (33), and the overall camaraderie/momentum that is growing amongst the foosball community here in town. Despite the fact that we have local events year-round here in the Valley of Sun, we continue to draw good numbers on a weekly basis and this shows there’s plenty of interest in our sport.
As the Interim League is coming to a close, we’ve had some changes in the standings as players are vying for the following prizes. • League medal to the player with the best
overall winning percentage• FREE ENTRY to the next official league
season to the player with the best winning percentage with a current rating/handicap > 4
• FREE ENTRY to the next official league season to the player with the best winning percentage with a current rating/handicap < 4
• 50% of league fees for the person with the most interim events played
Current standings as of March 23rd are as fol-lows:1. Chris Petit: 0.7502. Rick Weirman: 0.7343. Del Compton: 0.6694. Bob Duncan: 0.6475. Paul Freund: 0.6376. Jim King: 0.6167. Holly Minnig: 0.6148. Afshin Mirzazadeh: 0.6129. Rulon Smith: 0.60910. Billy Nolan: 0.598
Paul has a definite lock on the most events played and it appears Chris has sealed up the top spot for players with a rating above 4.0. However, I believe Del has a statistical chance of catching Rick for those foosers below a 4.0 rating. Regarding the league medal for the best overall winning percentage, it’s going to come down to Chris and Rick, depending on how many of the remaining events they both play and how they perform. Let the battle continue!
2016 Spring Arizona Foosball LeagueThe 2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League will begin on Tuesday, April 12th, for the Western
Conference and on Wednesday, April 13th, for the Eastern Conference. Per Billy Nolan “Coordinators will be finalizing conferences, schedules, and home fields over the next two weeks. (For those that are still in need of part-ners, a league coordinator will be contacting you shortly to resolve your roster and help get you ready for action!) In the meantime, take a minute to make sure your team has properly filled out its home field request(s) and other preferences” on the league signup URL www.ArizonaFoosball.com Leagues.
Currently, the league has 16 teams in the pro-cess of being formed with a total of 90 players having registered to play or be a substitute/reserve. In addition to the initial 16 teams, there are another 7 players looking to form teams. So, if anyone out there is looking to get on a team now is the time to do it. Also, if you’re a beginner, rookie, or veteran to the foosball scene and haven’t attended any of the four weekly events, but have an interest, please contact Billy Nolan, as noted below, or visit the above mentioned foosball site and get reg-istered. This league truly provides beginners with the possibility and ability to complete and beat the veteran players on a consistent level, which brings them back time and again to continue improving their game and foosball fellowship.
2016 Hall of Fame Classic TournamentThe 2016 Hall of Fame Classic tourney took place at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas March 9-13. Although I didn’t receive the ac-tual number of contestants, I heard there were 450 players from around the globe participat-ing in a wide variety of events. Following is a summary of how the Arizona players placed in the noted events. (Foos Pulse Continued From Page 19)Sad News…There are many of us saddened over the news that Harry White passed away on March 22nd, details of exactly what happened aren’t available. Harry was one of those folks that initially I thought was a little obnox-ious and full of himself. However, my thoughts of him totally changed after being around him a few times as I learned that was Harry just being Harry. He was a conscientious and caring person. I always looked for-ward to our matches with him as he always brought passion, humor, and a different perspective to foosball and life’s experiences. I’m sure there will be many of us missing Harry…my prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends.

What an honor it is for a junior pool player, age 14 through 18, to be chosen for the spring train-ing camp, sponsored and put on by the Black Widow Foundation, to prepare for the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Atlantic Challenge Cup. Ten players are invited to the camp and out of ten, six will be chosen as the official starting team. Emily Herpel is one of those ten partici-pants and here is her story.
Emily started playing pool when she was six (she’s now 16). She started to seriously compete after her first tournament at the Super Billiards Expo, in 2011 at the age of 11. From then on, she has collected a string of accolades to include (but not limited to)…• 2013 – 3rd place – BEF Junior National
Championships – Las Vegas (Girls 18 & under)
• 2014 – 4th place – BEF Junior National Championships – Kentucky (Girls 18 & under)
• 2013 & 2014 – 1st place Dr. Cue Artistic Pool Championships (alongside BEF Junior Nationals)
• 2015 – 2nd place BEF Junior National Championships – Las Vegas (Girls 18 & under)
• 2015 – 1st place New York Junior State 9 Ball Championships (Girls 18 & under)
• 2015 – 2nd place New Jersey Junior State 9 Ball Championships
• 2015 – 2nd place New York Junior State 8 Ball Championships
Emily’s parents are avid pool players, so she was introduced to pool at a very young age. Her mother, Jessica, is also a TAP (The Association
for P.O.O.L.) League licensee from New York, so many of Emily’s friends and acquaintances throughout the years have been players as well. With all this exposure and support it makes sense that she would excel at the sport.
Emily practices no less than 1-2 hours each day with a variety of drills to develop a well-rounded skill set. An excellent junior player needs repetitive experience on all shot variations to be able to compete with the best junior players in the country.
Being part of the Team USA, means there is much travel involved and even though Emily loves to travel, she values her time with her family and being away from them for long periods of time is probably one of the only things that she finds difficult when competing.
There is more to Emily than billiards. She participates in many volunteer programs, one in particular, called the “Interact Club” is a non-profit which helps local businesses, organizations and fundraisers. The others are the “Kids Fit Club” which is a mentoring program for grades K-2, where she works with kids who need extra help, teaching them character-building and help them open up and make new friends.
Also, she is a member of RAPP (Responsible Adoles-cent Peer Program). This organization works with the local New York Greene County Public Health Center to help raise awareness for teens and give support for vari-ous teen-related issues.
Emily presents herself very professionally and ap-pears to be wiser than her age, considering she is only a sophomore in High School with plans to continue on to college. She tells me, “I feel that every person and new friend that I meet has an impact on my life greatly. They
inspire me to be the best player that I can possibly be and to constantly push myself harder. Also, my sponsor is Cyborg through On-Tips USA. They are the best sponsor that I could ever have, and they give me an unbelievable amount of support.”
She certainly has a positive outlook for her future; which, by the way, includes a career in professional billiards, and to one day have her own pool room and be a TAP league operator like her parents.
The Billiard Congress of America, The Black Widow Foundation and The Billiard Education Foundation is doing an excellent job of bringing up-and-coming talent to the game of billiards. Their hard work and dedication to offer a path for the junior players is unsurpassed. Emily is just starting on her journey to become an excellent pool player and a conscientious adult. I see her excelling at everything she does in life.
[More about the Atlantic Challenge Cup (July 8-11, 2016) spring training camp, via James Do-ner: The ten players (six boys and four girls) were selected, out of thirty junior players nominated nationwide by the Billiard Congress of America through its supporting members, to make up the US team. These ten then participate in an inten-sive training camp sponsored, and hosted, by Hall of Fame Professional Jeanette Lee and her Black Window Foundation. At the end of this training camp, six team members (four boys and two girls) will be chosen as the starters for this year’s event, with the remaining four (two boys and two girls) being named alternate players.]

Stowers & Benavides Dominate at Stingers
Steve Stowers & Andy Benavides dominated the field at Stingers’ 16 & Under Scotch Doubles event on March 12th.
Steve & Andy took the hot-seat with a lopsided 9-4 win over George Bell & Hopell Ampongan.
On the one loss side, Tucson’s Aaron Purdy & John Schramm were on a four match winning streak after losing their first match of the day. George & Hopell helped the Tucson pair pack up their cues and sent them back home in third place after a 9-3 match.
Even with the momentum of the semi-final win, George & Hopell could find no answer for Steve & Andy in the finals. The finals went one set, with Steve & Andy scoring a 9-2 win for first place.
Complete Payouts:1st Steve Stowers & Andy Benavides $6402nd George Bell & Hopell Ampongan $3153rd Aaron Purdy & John Schramm $170

Doc Rice wins Senior Event
Doc Rice and Frank Alvarez both lost to Pete Lhotka, but still ended up playing in the last match of the tournament at Skip & Jan’s Senior 8-Ball Tournament on March 13th.
The final four on the winner’s side saw Alvarez defeat Joe Masi 5-3, and Lhotka defeat Rice 6-4. Lhotka would go on to defeat Alvarez 6-0 for the hot-seat.
On the left side of the board, Masi lost to Pete Bruton 5-2 and Rice defeated Jim Hendrickson 6-3. Rice then went on to defeat Bruton 6-3. By the time Rice and Alvarez were matching up in the semi-finals, they both already knew that Lhot-ka had succumbed to the late hour and headed home (finishing in 2nd place).
With that in mind, Rice’s 6-3 win over Alvarez was enough for first place.
Complete Payouts:1st Doc Rice $1702nd Pete Lhotka $1303rd Frank Alvarez $854th Pete Bruton $40

Teufel and Moore Split
Randell Moore took the hot-seat, but ended up splitting 1st and 2nd with Mar-cus Teufel at Kolbys’ 7 & Under 9-Ball tournament on March 12th.
Moore (a six rated player) navigated a field of eighteen players and captured the hot-seat with a 5-2 win over Tony Major.
Meanwhile, the one loss side was seeing a battle between Chet Lahti and Teufel. Both players had lost in the third round on the winner’s side, and had three match winning streaks going. Lahti would be the player to see his streak end as Teufel scored a 5-3 win.
Teufel scored another 5-3 win, this time over Major, in his next match.
The first set of the finals went to Teufel 6-1, and both players agreed on a split from there.
Complete Payouts:1st Randell Moore $182.502nd Marcus Teufel $182.503rd Tony Major $554th Chet Lahti $30
