Are you on “The List”? What list are you on? Are you going to challenge someone on the list? June saw Facebook light up with lists of top players, overall and in each different rating number. It’s all based on the ficticious “list” on The Huster’s on TruTV and it seemed like all that people could talk about. We will try our best to keep you readers informed as to what happens on the list of top players, but each ratings list is just too much for us to keep tabs on. Check out “The List” on page 20 and let the debates begin.

June also saw the closing of the doors at Skip and Jan’s. Fear not though, as a new location has been located and an all new Skip and Jan’s should be open for business somewhere around September.

-Until next time Mike

Arizona Billiard & Dart News July 2015

The year was 1982 and I had been a serious prac-titioner of pool for about four years when one day I opened up a copy of Billiards Digest maga-zine. Inside, I found an article about a young road hustler/turned tournament player, who had just won the National 9-Ball Championship in Chicago. That magazine article offered me my first introduction to the 6’ 4” hulk of a man known to some as Tennessee Tarzan, but better known among fellow pros as Mike Massey.

Legend has it that Mike was pegged with the nickname “Tennessee Tarzan” because of his frequently demonstrated ability to perform one-armed pushups on the tops of pool tables. But one-armed pushups aren’t the only amazing feat Massey has demonstrated on a pool table. Take for instance the time he broke and ran 330 racks of 9-Ball in a 24-hour period as part of an exhibition in Austria. Or the time he set another marathon record by pocketing 8030 balls in a 24-hour period…all one-handed.

After reading that magazine article back in 1982, it became a dream of mine that I might one day meet Mike Massey. I call it a “dream” because logic told me at that time there was little chance that a player like Tennessee Tarzan would ever come through the then-pool-dead-town of Phoe-nix, and it seemed even less likely that I would ever travel to a place where he might be. But then something happened that changed all that.

In 1986 I moved to Florida, whereupon I struck up a friendship with a resident pro there by the name of Tommy Kennedy. One weekend in 1990, while attending a tournament in Ft. Lau-derdale with Tommy, he asked me if I’d like to meet Mike Massey. Would I! Upon introduction, Mike and I also became fast friends, and a couple

months later he came to the pool-room I owned in Lakeland to play in the first Lakeland Open. To his, and my delight, he won that tournament

In 1994 I sold my poolroom and moved back to Arizona. In the years since, Mike Massey has remained busy adding to his legacy as one of the greatest all-around pool players and entertainers the billiard industry has ever seen. In traveling to 40 different countries, Mike has enter-tained, and helped, tens of thousands of people with his trick shot shows, finger pool demonstrations, card tricks, singing, and pool lessons. And that’s not to mention the tens of thousands who have witnessed his awesome prow-ess as a competitive player in winning many major championships in nearly all disciplines. Some of his performances are strictly story book material, too, such as the time he ran 186 and out on Richie Ambrose in a major 14.1 tournament. Or the time he won that Na-tional 9-Ball Championship in Chicago when it was planned to be nothing more than a stopover for he and Jim McDermott while on their way to McDermott’s cue shop in Wisconsin.

Massey’s many accomplishments earned him induction into the BCA Hall of Fame in 2005.

Lately, Mike Massey has slowed some. Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s maturity. Or maybe it’s just a desire to stop and smell the roses, for a change. Whatever the cause, Arizona pool players are the beneficiaries of this “shifting-of-gears” for Tennessee Tarzan because he has chosen our fair state as a sort of base of operations for himself. His travel schedule is still quite full at the mo-ment; with a missionary trip to the Philippines coming

up soon, followed by several visits to Las Vegas to work league championships and the annual BCA Trade Show. But after all that, he plans to return to Arizona and spend some time promoting pool in and around Phoenix.

During his “home” time, Mike is making himself available for private and group lessons. For private lessons, he charges $100 for a single hour, or $200 for a 3-hour session. To schedule a session with Mike, he can be reached at 435-659-4949.

Or maybe you’ll have the good fortune to run into him some time at one of the Phoenix-area pool-rooms that he frequents. He’s been known to spend quite a bit of time at Bull Shooters and Main Street Billiards; just to mention two of the places where there is a pretty good chance of catching him. You’ll know him when you see him. He’s the great big, bearded guy, with the beautiful Meucci cue.

Hanson and Balancad Split at Knobbys

Doug Hanson took a longer route, but still ended up in the finals to earn a split of first and second place with Burt Balancad at Knobbys 9’s & Under 8-Ball event on June 5th.

Hanson dropped a 2-1 decision to Balancad mid event, but came back with wins over Rob Livingston, Tyson Cole, Sophia Morquecho and Pete Barrios to earn his spot in the finals. It was a shorter path for Balancad, who followed his win over Hanson with wins over Morquecho and Joe Briggs.

Hanson was on the verge of elimination in the semi-finals when Briggs broke and ran the first rack, but he came back to win two games in a row to send Joe home in third place.

Instead of playing out the finals, Hanson and Balancad agreed on a split from there.

Scott Frost knew he would have to defeat the best that Arizona pool has to offer in order to win his second Diamond Pool Tour of the season at Stingers on June 6th - 7th; what he wasn’t expecting was that he would also have to beat a couple of the best players that France and Spain have to offer.

The field of seventy one players was split with twenty six “A” players and forty five “B” players in attendance. Fans were treated by the play of French National Champion Nicolas Kalb and top Spanish player Daniel Jimenez, who took a break from visiting friends in Las Vegas to come out to Arizona and see how they fared against the players on the Diamond Tour. Kalb would score wins over JR Burhart and Gus Briseno before dropping a 5-3 match to Frost. Jimenez would score wins over JR Jiron and Nick De Leon before falling to James Les-ter 5-4. Frost would go on to take the “A bracket” hot-seat with a 5-2 win over Lester.

Play was extremely competitive in the “B bracket” with Ed Scott and Joey Bar-rera distancing themselves from the pack. Barrera had notable wins over Brian Poore, Oscar Avila and Sara Miller before beating Scott for the “B Bracket” hot-seat.

With a 7th place finish in the event, Sara Miller easily won the Greenmail top lady bonus, as well as the ladies side pot.

While Bobby Emmons finished out of the money, he did earn the $50 Greenmail bounty on last month’s winner Spike Aiardo. Aiardo turned in an uncharacteris-tic “2 and out” performance, with losses to Mike Sandoval and Emmons.

When the two brackets came together on Sunday, it was Frost scoring a 5-2 win over Barrera on the winner’s side, and Spain’s Jimenez defeating Tony Page 5-3 on the one loss side. Jimenez went on to defeat Barrera by the same 5-3 score, but could only manage two racks in the lone set of the finals as Frost won 5-2.

The Neil’s Garage Cabinets Second Chance tournament saw JR Burkhart defeat a field of seventeen players for first place. Burkhart defeated Jamie Cole 3-2 for the hot-seat and then blanked Todd Rowitz 3-0 in the first set of the finals.

Presenting Sponsor, Casino Del Sol Resort, provided vouchers for all of the players in attendance. Each voucher was good for a $60 credit at the Casino’s amphitheater.

There was no movement at the top of either points list with Frost and Nick Kline leading their respective lists. Aiardo still clings to second place on the “A Player” list, while Barrera and Rick Schmitz are tied for second place on the “B Player” list.

Tour organizers expressed their thanks to Dale and his staff for putting up with us pool players for two long days. Lenny Marshall put in overtime at this event as he manned the streaming camera and commentary all weekend. Rick Schmitz was also on hand, providing the tour with more great photos. The tour just wouldn’t be the same without the help of everyone involved.

The Diamond Pool Tour will take July off, for a well deserved summer break, but will be back in action on August 15th and 16th for the Arizona State One Pocket Championship at Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe.

The Balabushka Cue Company

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

The Balabushka, Adam and Helmstetter trade-marks were purchased from the Adam Cue Company in 2011 by Robert Mallen who restructured and incorporated as the Balabushka Cue Company, LLC. Robert has been knee-deep into the billiard scene in Arizona for the past 20 years through the ownership of the TAP Billiard League and a brick and mortar retail billiard supply store located in Tempe, AZ. by the name of G Cue Billiard Store.

The name George Balabushka has been syn-onymous as one of the most famous cue makers primarily by being referenced in the 1986 bil-liard movie, “The Color of Money” with Tom Cruise and Paul Newman. One of the reasons for the reference was because of his reputation as a top cue maker on the East Coast.

Below is an interview I organized with Robert to get some insight as to how he came about owning such a prestigious name, how the new company is structured, and plans for the future. Q: How and when did the opportunity pres-ent itself to purchase the Balabushka, Adam and Helmstetter trademark from the Adam Cue Company?A: Because of a relationship cultivated over the years with the previous owner of the Adam Cue Company, I was honored to be the first to be considered when it came up for sale. After the purchase, the Adam Cue Company no longer exists and Balabushka, Adam and Helmstetter are under the Balabushka Cue Companies “um-brella” of products.

Q: Why the George Balabushka (GB) brand name?’A: Although his cues were well known in the East during the 60’s & 70’s, it was the movie “The Color of Money” released in 1986, with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise that really pro-pelled his name as billiard cue-making aficio-nado. Just like many brilliant artists, he passed away before his name became one of the most revered in the billiard industry making his cues highly collectible.

Q: Can you give us a brief history of how George Balabushka’s cues became so highly valued?A: Starting at a very young age, George be-came a master at intricate carpentry. Balabush-ka loved to play pool for fun. He loved to hang around the pros, or the equivalent of pros in the days before professional pool. He especially liked to play and watch straight pool, competing in or attending nearly every competition in the New York City area. Something about see-ing ball after ball after ball fall into the pocket hypnotized him. And then in 1959, he bought a local Brooklyn pool hall with his friend Frank McGown. While running the pool hall he began to repair cues and then make cues for friends as gifts. This was the first intersection of his gift of carpentry and his love of pool. Soon, other regulars began asking him to make cues for them. Then, at some point in the early six-

ties, his name, and his cues, began circulating around the professional billiards community.

In the 1960’s George was making cues full time, since he had a love for the game of pool. His cues departed from the ornate pieces of art that were just becoming popular and instead focused on making high performance hand-crafted cues. He pioneered the use of Irish linen wraps and for the majority of his cues he used straight grain maple over curly or Birdseye maple in the butt. Checkered rings just above the wrap, known as “Balabushka” rings was his signature design, as well as many other cue features universally used today.

Q: Technology has changed since this cue was first made What enhancements have you made since buy-ing the brand name?A: Yes, technology has changed giving us the ability to incorporate higher quality, longer aged, woods for the butt; higher grade shaft wood; upgraded ferrule material; upgraded per-formance layered tips and extra layers of finish to help lock in the beauty of the cue for many years. We also made a few internal changes to authenticate the feel of the cue even further.

Q: Do you have any connections to the Bala-bushka family?A: Yes. I am in contact with his two sons, George and Gregory. George Jr. flew out to meet with me after my purchase and gave me valuable personal information about their father along with a few of his original business cards. There were many interesting stories about his Dad in a three-hour visit that gave me a deeper look into who George was. The family also receives royalties from each item sold under the Balabushka name. Q: How have you changed the construction of the cue? A: Through extensive research and consulta-tion with his colleagues such as Pete Tascarella, the construction of the cues are in line with George’s standards and always will be. Q: What is the future of the line and brand?A: The future of the Balabushka line of prod-ucts is very exciting. We have plans for many new items with the quality “Balabushka” name on them. It’s a little too early to reveal these products, but they will be appearing within the next 12 months.

In addition to the original ten models that we started with from the Adam Cue Company introduced, the newly-formed Balabushka Cue Company has released the SLE (100 made), the Era Series (one model from the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s), and the most recent “Core” Series which we will be promoting in the next few weeks. The Core series is priced for the player who wants a top-quality cue at a mid-range price point. These cues are simple and classic Bala-bushka in design and have exceptional play-ability.

I also want to mention that in addition to cues, two years ago, we introduced Balabushka Performance Chalk in blue and blonde. This chalk is becoming very popular because of how well it increases performance, adheres to the tip of a cue and is very clean leaving behind little residue.

Q: How does GB line compare to other lines in pricing?A: Since cue prices range from under $50 to $2500+ and there are several hundred or even thousand cue manufacturers throughout the world it’s difficult to do a comparison overall. One thing that I can promise players is that The Balabushka Cue Company delivers quality and affordability.

Q: How many models are out currently? A: Of the three lines of cues offered by the Balabushka Cue Company, there are sixteen models of Balabushka, ten Adam and three Helmstetter carom cues. Q: Where can a person see and test drive one of these cues? A: There are many dealers all over the USA and Canada and can be found at www.balabush-kacues.com. If you are in Arizona, there are two dealers 1) G Cue Billiard Store, 1342 W. Warner Road, Tempe, AZ. (480) 940-7003; 2) Shoot the Bull, 1336 W. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013 (602) 293-3384.

Q: What year did George make his last cue?A: No known date for production of his final cue, but he passed away in 1975 and was mak-ing them up until that time.

Q: What length weight shaft options are avail-able in the GB series? A: Today’s cues are 58”; however, keeping with George Balabushka’s standards, all cues manufactured through the Balabushka Cue Company are 57-1/2”. Q: The George Balabushka cue was named and shown in one of the biggest pool movies ever starring Tom Cruise and Paul Newman in (1986) The Color of Money. How close is your modern day model to the one we see in the movie? A: The actual cue used in the movie was a Joss cue, not a Balabushka. Our theory is that the producers did not want to purchase a real Bala-bushka because of the expense; however, they used the Balabushka name because it had the reputation for being the world-renowned, top-of-the-line cue. Plus Paul Newman’s character “Fast Eddy Felson” was the original owner of a Balabushka cue during the time George was producing cues.

Q: IF you had to describe the GB line you are producing in one word what would it be? A: Excellence!

Arizona Billiard & Dart News July 2015

Several teams are getting ready for the APA National Team Championships to be held in Las Vegas this August. Over the past month and a half APA Phoenix Metro has been qualifying teams that will be competing at the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. We will be sending three 8 Ball teams, two 9 Ball teams, two Ladies Only teams, 2 Masters Teams and two Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles teams Gina Nowlin, League Operator for the Phoenix APA announced. The teams that represent Phoenix in Vegas will have their entries paid, rooms comped, and a little spending money to take with them. The 5 person teams all receive $1100 Cash and the doubles teams received approximately $200 in cash. The 5 player teams are the highlight of the National event with over 1600 teams competing last year. APA National Team Championships is the largest pool tour-nament in the world and is in the Guinness book of world records as such.

To qualify for this year’s National event teams compete in a series of Local Team Championship tournaments that began a year ago. At the end of each 14 week session the top teams from each division compete in the ‘Tri-Cities Event. This tournament is a two day tournament that produces 12 teams to advance to the ‘Cities’ event. After two more sessions (three in all) there will be a total of 36 teams to playoff for the three 8 ball and two 9 ball spots.

APA is the only league in the world that allows absolute beginners in the sport of billiards to compete in such a large tournament with a chance to win so much money. Over $1.6 Million is up for grabs in the APA National events, and every team that competes must have a range of skilled players from beginner to a highly skilled player. Teams consist of 8 players on a roster with 5 playing in each match. Each individual match is handicapped to give the lower ranked players a chance to win. It makes for some very interesting matchups Gina told us. When a 3 rated player is matched up against a 7 rated player the 3 only has to win 2 games to the 7’s six games.

The TAP Pool League of Phoenix recently concluded their Spring Session with a “Titleholder’s Tourna-ment” held at Main Street Billiards on June 20th. It was the end of the first session under the new owner-ship of Pati Martinez-Muehling and John Muehling.

Eighteen teams gathered for the Tournament, which started at 10am and didn’t conclude until 11:45 that night. “It was a long day, but we had a ton of fun and saw a lot of great competition,” said John Muehling. “With the growth we’ve experienced this session and the momentum we have going into summer, we see this Tournament growing into a 2 day event. It’s very exciting for our players,” continued Muehling.

This Titleholder’s Tournament is the last of three qualifiers for their Master’s Tournament, also being held at Main Street on August 8-9. Five teams each from the Summer 2014 and Fall/Winter 2015 Ses-sions will be combined with seven winning teams from this Titleholder’s for a 2-day Tournament that will determine the teams that will represent TAP at their National Championship in Nashville, November 4-8. More information, along with video and photos from Titleholder’s can be found on their website at www.TAPTHISBilliards.com.

“The Chariots” (made up of Scott Vogelsberg, Chuck Ryan and Hugo Villanue-va) completed an undefeated run through the field to win Stingers’ 3-man team 8-ball event on June 27th.

After wins over “We Need a 10” and “Crunch Time”, the Chariots won a hill-hill match against “We Need the Rolls” (Robert Banta, Ben Sutherland and Nick Cipiti).

“We Need the Rolls” then dropped a 13-11 decision to “Chillin” (Bill Vander Weyst, Chad Purvis and Dave Linke), setting up the final match of the night.

The first (and only) set of the finals came down to the end, but “The Chariots” scored a 9-11 win over “Chillin” for first place.

Cole Holds Off Burkhart at Stingers

Tyson Cole dug down deep and found his “A game” when it mattered, to win Stingers 9’s & Under Call 9-ball event on June 20th.

Cole & Doug Hanson made their way through a field of 29 players and met up for the hot-seat, which went to Cole 8-5.

JR Burkhart had lost a tough 8-6 match to Hanson late in the event, but that loss just seemed to get his attention. Burkhart bounced back with three dominating wins over Patrick McGovern, Jamie Cole and Hanson.

The first set of the finals was Burkhart in complete control and he ran out from every opportunity in an 8-1 match. It looked like the second set would be more of the same as Burkhart led the match 6-3, but Cole came back with a three pack that froze Burkhart in the chair. A dry break in the final rack allowed Bur-khart back to the table, but he lost a short safety battle and could only watch as Cole ran out the rack for first place.

Bret Huth Wins One Pocket Madness

Bret Huth completed an undefeated run through a full field of sixteen players to win Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on June 20th.

Huth took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Valley newcomer Emilio Maestas, and made his way to the tv screen that was set up for fans in attendance to watch the Scott Frost / Alex Pagulayan challenge match.

On the one loss side, Bernie Pettipiece was making his way through the bracket. A 2-0 win over Tres Kane was followed up by a 2-0 win over Maestas to earn him a place in the finals against Huth.

The final match went the same as all the rest on this day, as Huth won 3-1 for first place.

Tres Kane took a break from directing the event to express thanks to Brian Reich for setting up the PPV stream for Scott and Alex for everyone to watch. Everyone in Phoenix was cheering Scott on as he tried to bring home the cash. The crowd wished a big thanks to Scott for everything he has done for one pocket in the Valley.

List Fever Hits Arizona“List Fever” has taken over the Arizona Billiards Social Media world, with no less than five different lists being created, based on “The List” from the TruTV reality series “The Hustlers”. The idea behind “The List” is a heirarchy of top players in the state, ranked by ability. Players on the list can challenge the play-er above them and take that spot if they win the challenge. Those who are not on the list, can challenge the #10 player for a chance to take that players spot.

While there are already lists for each different Arizona rating, we will try to keep you loyal readers as updated on the top list as we can. Players will change positions during each month, but as of press time, these were the players on the list.

Fargo Ratings

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

Mike Page, the owner of Fargo Billiards in Fargo, ND, has developed a system for rating pool players that appears to be a viable solu-tion to the long-standing problem of accurately and fairly handicapping players in league and tournament competitions. Mr. Page’s system has been appropriately dubbed, “Fargo Rat-ings.”

CSI - the parent company of BCAPL and USAPL – two of the country’s leading amateur pool leagues – has embraced Fargo Ratings and is now using them to estimate win-prob-ability percentages between any two teams or individuals. When used in June at the 2015 BCAPL/USAPL Warm-Up tournament in Tuc-son, Fargo Ratings demonstrated a high degree of accuracy in predicting match outcomes.

Mr. Page was in Phoenix in May to attend the latest meeting of the Arizona Rating Commit-tee where he presented the committee with a short introduction to the Fargo Rating system. While it is unknown at this time whether or not the committee will replace the Arizona rating system with the Fargo rating system, Page’s visit has stirred much discussion of Fargo Ratings among local pool players. The main subject in question is: What, exactly, are Fargo Ratings? In an attempt to answer that question, we can take a look at direct quotes from the home page of Fargo Billiards’ website:

Fargo Ratings are a chess-like (ELO) sys-tem for rating pool players. There have been considerable recent developments that we will describe soon.

Below is a description of an earlier system used locally to rate 8-ball players.

* * * * * * * * *

The “Fargo Rating” is a new approach to rating and handicapping players in the game of eight ball. Fargo Ratings allow beginner

players to compete with all skill levels, includ-ing experts.

How is the Fargo Ratings determined?

Following an initial estimate, a player’s Fargo Rating changes continuously based on actual win/loss record against opponents of known rating. Most new players start with a 400 rat-ing and that rating is automatically adjusted after every league night or tournament. Adjust-ments happen more quickly for newer players. The more games one plays, the more “robust” his or her rating becomes and the smaller will become the post-league-night or post-tourna-ment adjustments. As of August 2010, there are over 23,000 8-ball games that contribute to the ratings of over 500 players.

How does this affect me?

The Fargo Rating allows us – if we choose – to provide a level playing field for all players. We know, for example, that if a 350-rated player matches up with a 450-rated player, the higher-rated player (the 450) is expected statistically to win two-thirds of the games. We can use this information to create a match between the two players that each has the same chance to win. We use the Fargo Rating system in our leagues and many of our tournaments.

Leagues

We limit the skill levels of teams in league divi-sions by capping the combined Fargo Ratings of the teams’ members. For example, teams in the Monday Fun Division have a cap of 1400 Fargo Rating points. This means the average rating of the four people playing a match in this division must be below 350. New play-ers – those who have never played in a pool league – may enter with a Fargo Rating of 300 for the purpose of this requirement. Therefore, although each team might be able to squeeze one or two slightly more experienced players

into its ranks, Monday teams consist largely of new players. The Intermediate Division has a cap of 1850 points, and the Advanced Division has a cap of 2100 points. As a result of these rating caps, there are no “stacked” teams in a division and there are no higher-skilled teams in lower divisions. In addition, the top teams in each division will be fairly equally skilled and thus fairly competitive with one another.

Tournaments

We offer several tournaments that are handi-capped based on the Fargo Rating system. In a tournament format, the Fargo Rating system is designed to put two players on a level, or at least close-to-level, playing field for a match. The two players are generally required to win a different number of games to win the match.

Rating Higher-rated Lower-ratedDifference player goes to player goes to 0-34 5 5 35-62 5 4 63-80 6 4 81-109 5 3110-131 6 3132-175 7 3176-199 8 3200-219 7 2222-up 8 2

Every Sunday, we offer a handicapped 8-Ball tournament. The above chart determines how many games each player must win in order to win the match. For example, Kevin (503) is playing Mary (297). They have a rating differ-ence of 503 – 297 = 206. By reference to the “rating difference” column, this means that Kevin must win 7 games of 8-ball before Mary wins 2 games.

I hope this helps explain a little about the sys-tem that could possibly become the latest thing in Arizona pool.

It might not be the typical reading of the old adage, but on June 6th at Kittys 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event; the family that played together, won together. Chris & Dawn Carpenter teamed up and didn’t drop a match all day.

Team Carpenter took the hot-seat with a 6-4 win over Tom Martin & Ken Gil-lies.

Tom & Ken would be back for more though, after a win over Willie Thompson & Phil Salas in the semi-finals.

The 6-4 win for the hot-seat was so much fun for Chris & Dawn, that they went ahead and duplicated it with another 6-4 win in the first set of the finals for first place.

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

Hello fellow foosers, and welcome to the 2015 Summer Foosball sea-son! By the time you read this the league will have launched with West-ern and Eastern Division matches being played on June 30th and July 1st, respectively. We’ve also had a major change in venues that has been extremely well received by players from all over the valley. We’ll also visit another past Foos Bowl champion, as well as an offering to have your thoughts published.

LEAGUE

As mentioned in past Foos Pulse articles, the league is continuing to grow and as of this writing we have a minimum of 20 teams signed up to take their shot at winning Foos Bowl XIV. This is an unprecedented number of teams with unprecedented number of new league players anx-ious to get on the tables and prove themselves as contenders.Although there remains a few players to have their handicaps evaluated, the average for the 60 players currently registered to play is 3.54, with the lowest being 0.1 and the highest coming in at 7.7. Another interest-ing observation is that there are only three teams returning with the same roster, ten teams returning with a single roster change, and seven teams I’d classify as new since they have at least two new members and three of those seven have never played in the league. I think this dynamic of team makeup can only be answered by saying there must have been a lot of strategizing taking place during the off season. Time will definitely tell how successful this player maneuvering has been.

INTERIM LEAGUE

The interim league came to a close after 19 events with the finale tak-ing place on Wednesday, June 17, at Duke’s Sports Bar in Scottsdale. Veteran Brian Salke was the overall winner for the session with a 0.720 winning percentage with Billy Nolan a close second at 0.700. The leader of the rookies was Brian Sternberg with a 0.690 winning ratio with Phil Tran close behind at 0.679. Both Brian and Paul Freund tied with playing in the most events at 17 out of 19 possible.

Overall I’d say the interim league was very well supported and success-ful in continuing to feed the growth of foosball here in the Valley of the Sun. We had 67 different foosers participating in the events in additional to quite a few of those being ‘new’ players. I say ‘new’ because most of these players have been away from foosball for a number of years and are just now returning to the foos scene due to continued promotion by the regular players in additional to our ArizonaFoosball.com website.

NEW VENUE

Duke’s Sports Bar in Scottsdale is the new venue hosting our Friday night tournaments. While previously it was a regular venue for league play, it has now bumped up its status to one of the premium locations hosting mid-to-large tournaments. Currently there are five T-3000 tables but there’s room for more if the need arises. It has a large dedicated room with plenty of tables/chairs, ceiling fans, cold A/C, and space to accommodate foosers and onlookers. In addition, there’s plenty of good food and drinks on the menu so don’t be afraid to come hungry.

The inaugural event kicked off on June 19th with both Open Singles and Open Doubles tournaments. The Singles tourney had 17 participants and Open Doubles had 13 teams. Following are the top four finishers for each event.

Singles: 1st: Steve T.; 2nd: Nick B.; 3rd: Mike S.; 4th: Mike L.Doubles: 1st: Pat H. & Nick B.; 2nd: Mike L. & Holly M.; 3rd: Jessie R. & Jeff M.; 4th: Cowboy & Bryan H.

SPECIAL: CHAMPIONS OF SEASON’S PAST(Started a few months ago, we re-live some accomplishments from pre-vious season’s champs)

It seems like only yesterday when Foos Bowl IX took place at Stinger’s Sports Bar in Peoria. However, that was three years ago when the Three Amigos (Mike Miller, Jeremy Katz, Billy Nolan) put a shellacking on Pullshotz.

Three Amigos hailed from the Western Division, edging into the playoffs via the third and final spot and then overcoming the conference favorites Foos Brothers (2nd place) and Stingers (1st place). Pullshotz finished in second place in the Eastern Division and had to play Night Crawl-ers in the wildcard match and then had to beat the first place team and defending league champions Hot Shots: Part Foos in the conference title match. Foos Bowl IX was easily won by the Three Amigos in a 3-1 victory over Pullshotz. Congrats!!

ET CETERA

Phoenix foosball has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Week-ly tournament action now draws an average of 18-24 players for any given event, several days a week. Come try out your game this weekend at any of the following venues:

Friday @ 8:30PM: Duke’s Sports Bar, 7607 E. McDowell Rd., Scotts-daleSaturday @ 8:00PM: Stinger’s Sports Bar, 10040 N. 43rd Ave., Glen-daleSunday @ 3:15PM: The Loft Again, 15015 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoe-nix

Once again, if anyone is interested getting involved in Arizona Foosball Leagues in any capacity, visit www.ArizonaFoosball.com and register using the current signup sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818.Remember…Keep Foosin’ Fun!
