Cole undefeated at Knobbys

Tyson Cole made his way undefeated through a field of eighteen players to win Knobbys 9 and under 8-Ball event on April 3rd.

Cole had notable wins over Claudia Morado, Chuck Parrill and Pete Barrios on his way to the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Parrill was eliminating Sara Sorg in 4th place (for her first Knobbys tourney cash). Parrill would then join Sorg on the rail, after losing to Barrios 2-1.

The finals would go one set with Cole winning 2-0 for first place.

Ideas are easy to come by in the pool world. Ev-eryone seems to have an opinion as to what the pool world needs, but very few people actually come up with an idea and then see it through to it’s completion. The Arizona pool community got a chance to see what can happen though, when an idea is made reality.

The Saguaro Cup, conceived and executed brilliantly by Jeremy Gibbs, started taking the local pool community by storm in early March when Gibbs announced his idea for an “East vs West” challenge match to resemble the Mosconi Cup. The event would be limited to the top 9’s in town, with one open rated player to serve a leadership role on the team.

A date was set for April 18th at Skip and Jans, not leaving Gibbs much time to put everything together. That didn’t seem to deter him in any way though.

Ben Sutherland and Donald Mangahas were chosen as team captains and they got to work on the unenviable task of choosing their teams. Team #Bestside - representing the West - would be Sutherland, Brian Reich, Bret Huth, Carlos Avalos, John Ritonya and Tres Kane. Team #Eastmode would be Mangahas, Nick De Leon, Mike Sandoval, Gibbs, Lee Brown and Spike Aiardo.

As the woofing (and photoshopping) got under-way between the two teams, a sponsor program was announced by Gibbs, Within a short period of time, Gibbs had sold 10 sponsorships to local businesses that were affiliated in one way or another with the pool scene.

With sponsors on board, the event soon had a

beautiful trophy for the well deserving winning team to go along with $3000 in total prize mon-ey. Team shirts and even custom printed score-boards for all the fans to follow the action were quickly put together..

Daniel Busch of POV Pool in California was brought on to stream the event and Rick Schmitz came out from Tucson to handle photography.

Even with all of the interest on social media, the players had to be shocked on the day of the event with the turn-out from fans of both teams. Well over 100 people came decked out in shirts to support their favorite team, and each & every game or match won was greeted with rau-cous celebration from the fans supporting their teams.

Team #Eastmode looked like a team on a mission to end any possible event drama as they quickly raced to a 7-2 lead. They comfortably won match after match and looked poised to make an early day of it. Sutherland & Huth then won match 10, followed by Reich winning match 11, and Team #Bestside had something to build on. Before Team #Eastmode knew what hit them, Team #Bestside had won five straight matches and tied the score at 7-7.

Mangahas pulled Team #Eastmode back ahead 8-7, but Ritonya knotted things again at 8-8.

With every ball seeming to be the toughest ball these players had every pocketed, Gibbs, Aiardo and Suther-land pushed back their nerves and won three straight matches to give Team #Eastmode the victory.

When the celebrations finally slowed down, players from both teams were seen toasting the completion of a great event, and hopefully an event that will continue in Arizona for many years to come.

Team captains have already been announced for next year, with Eric Nordstrom representing Team #Eastmode and Ryan Anderson representing Team #Bestside. The event will move to Bullshooters on the West Side and Team #Bestside will certainly be looking to even the score with the rivals from the East.

Joven Bustamante scored back to back wins over Scott Frost to top off an unde-feated run through the field at the Diamond Pool Tour’s third stop of the year at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill in Glendale, AZ on April 11th and 12th.

The event drew a field of 80 players, with 25 “A” players and 55 “B” players. The “A” bracket saw surprise early losses by points leader Bobby Emmons and Nick De Leon. Neither player would qualify for Sunday play, much to the crowd’s surprise. Bustamante, who had not fared well in last month’s event, had wins over Tucson’s George Teyechea, Jason Polk and Spike Aiardo, before facing off against Frost for the “A” bracket hot-seat. Frost looked unstoppable all day with wins over Rick Armbrust, Mickey Provencio and Tyson Cole. Frost did not allow an opponent past three games, and entered the hot-seat match with a combined 27-5 rack record. Even as strong as Frost was playing, he would drop the hot-seat match to Bustamante 9-7.

The “B” bracket was taken to school by Junior Point Leader Nick Kline. Kline had knocked on the door of making it to Sunday play in tour stops one and two, but he was a force to be reckoned with in the “B” bracket all weekend. Kline’s aggressive play led to wins over Trevor Long, Claudia Justus and Joe Chyzy on Saturday. Kline came back Sunday, and picked up where he left off on Saturday, with wins over Rick Schmitz and Jamie Cole to take the “B” bracket hot-seat.

The Greenmail top lady bonus was split again this month, with Heather Cortez and Sophia Morquecho both earning $50. Morquecho was also the winner of the random drawing for a two night stay at The Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson, the presenting sponsor for the tour.

There was no Greenmail bounty awarded since last month’s winner, Vilmos Foldes, was not in attendance at this event.

The “A” and “B” brackets came together late Sunday with Bustamante, Frost, Kline and Cole fighting it out. Frost eliminated Cole in fourth place, while Bustamante was sending Kline left to face Frost in the semi-final match. The match between Frost and Kline was close, with Kline representing himself well, before dropping the match 7-4. This led to the rematch between Bustamante and Frost in the double elimination finals. Both players showed the fans in atten-dance what run-out 9-ball looks like on a 7’ Diamond Smart Table, but in the end it was Bustamante who scored the 9-6 win in the first set of the finals.

The Neil’s Garage Cabinets Second Chance tournament on Sunday drew 14 players, with last month’s winner, Steve Blackburn, settling for second place after a 3-0 / 3-0 double dipping at the hand of Daric Craft. Todd Dilley turned in a third place finish.

The Diamond Pool Tour will head to Pockets Pool & Pub in Tucson on May 2nd and 3rd, for their fourth stop of the season.

Tour organizers thanked Dale and his great wait staff for hosting two days of pool players, as well as Lenny Marshall from On The Rail TV for the live streaming coverage all weekend. Thanks also went out to George Teyechea and Jerry Briesath for their help commentating matches, and to Rick Schmitz for all the great photos from the event.

Rebecca Wagner wasn’t even planning on making the trip from Vegas to Phoe-nix for the AWBT’s second tour stop at Bullshooters on April 25th and 26th. It was only when she was able to get the weekend off work, that she agreed to ac-company road partner Ashea Erdahl to the event. Wagner would end up mowing down a field of twenty eight players to earn first place in her first event of the new season.

Wagner would not have an easy path to the win however. Matches against Cyn-thia Haeffner and Tracie Hamman on Saturday were followed by equally tough matches against Jaye Succo and Bernie Store on Sunday. Wagner did not allow an opponent to the hill against her, and won two of those four matches 7-1.

Wagner’s opponent for the hot-seat, Store, would not have a path any easier. Store scored wins over Alicia De Leon, Jodie Villegas, Susan Williams and Erdahl before dropping the hot-seat to Wagner 7-4.

The one loss side on Sunday was a “who’s who” of top female talent, includ-ing Williams, Amanda Pulley, Justine Bishop and Susan Mello. After Susan and Susan scored wins over Pulley and Bishop, they were joined on the left side of the board by Erdahl and Succo. Susan Williams would keep her winning ways going, with a 7-2 win over Succo, but Mello would drop a hill-hill decision to Erdahl.

Things were not looking good for Williams in her next match, against Erdahl, as she trailed 5-2 in the race to seven. Williams had been in that position before though, and she drew on that experience to mount a great comeback for the hill-hill win.

The semi-finals between Williams and Store started out well for Williams, as she took an early 2-0 lead, but then it was time for Store to mount a comeback and she won seven of the next nine games for the 7-4 win and a rematch with Wagner in the finals.

The single race to nine extended final was closer than their earlier battle, but it ended in the same result, as Wagner defeated Store 9-6 for first place.

The win moves Wagner to second place on the AWBT points list, with Store still holding a comfortable lead over the rest of the list in first place. Williams, Haef-fner and Barbara Lee fill out the top five positions on the list.

Although this event worked out well for Wagner, she still doesn’t see herself able to compete in many events this season due to work conflicts.

The AWBT has been forced to change their schedule, and the upcoming Sting-er’s event has been moved to May 23rd and 24th.

The second chance event on Sunday saw Cynthia Haeffner beat Diana Leon for the hot-seat and then beat Tami Hathcock in the finals for an undefeated victory.

Assistant Tour director Tres Kane gave his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, and the staff of Bullshooters for hosting and adding $300 to the main event and $100 to the second chance event, Jose Gonzales of Las Glorias Grille for adding $100 to the main event and his partner Kristie Ortega for running another fine event.

APA’s Junior Division held their tri-annual “Junior/Adult” tournament and awards ceremony on Sunday, March 29th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. The popular tournament is where the kids get to pick an adult of their choice to play in a scotch doubles match with opponents of the same skill level and age. This event is becoming one of the most popular tournaments that we run, said Gina Nowlin, APA league Operator for Maricopa County. Both the juniors and the Adults have a great time playing together as a team, she said. This event is a great way that parents and kids can spend an afternoon together having a good time doing something that’s fun and safe.

The Juniors Division has grown to over 45 young players from all over the valley. The new ‘East Side’ division played their 3 week last Sunday and has grown in just a couple short weeks to 15 kids. There are two divisions for the juniors. The “Young Guns” division includes players from ages 11 to 17. The younger group, dubbed “Junior Guns” consist of shooters under the age of 11.

There were 12 teams who showed up to play for trophies and gift cards this time around. As always, lunch was served to the players while the awards for the players who excelled in the weekly division were being handed out.Winners for the junior division’s Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles tournament this session were:

First place – Michael Flinn and Adam LangleySecond Place – James and Perfecto DiazThird Place – Michael Dale and Anthony Rounds

The juniors play every other Sunday afternoon at Bullshooters in Phoenix and Main Street Billiards in Mesa. They play three sessions per year, ending each session with an awards ceremony, lunch, and then the coveted Junior/ Adult Scotch Doubles Tournament.

You can check the local website at www.apaphx.com for more information on this tournament. You can also check out our ad in this issue for date and time. We would like to invite everyone to come down and support the juniors. They are the future of our sport.

What does a pool player do when her scheduled partner is a no-show for a scotch doubles event? Well, if that pool player is Heather Morvay, she takes whatever partner is available and runs through the tourney to take the hot-seat.

Morvay teamed up with Dave Linke to cruise through the field of thirteen teams, at Skip & Jan’s Jack & Jill Scotch event on April 11th, and take the hot-seat with a hill-hill win over Claudia Morado & Jon Driver.

On the left side of the board, Donna Taylor & Rick Jones were busy eliminating Laura Boothroyd & Brady Williams 7-4 in fourth place.

Donna & Rick kept things rolling with another 7-4 win, this time eliminating Claudia & Jon in third place.

Instead of playing out the finals, both teams agreed on a split of first and second place from there.

While the rest the room was going crazy with the Saguaro Cup on April 18th, Cathy Kelley was also holding two separate events on the Diamond 7’ Smart Tables at Skip & Jan’s. One event was an ultimate 6’s 10-ball event, capped at sixteen players, while the other was a 9’s & Under 9-ball event with nineteen players.

The 6s event saw Derrik Murphey take the hot-seat with a win over Luke Willkom.

Brady Williams was making his way through the one loss side, and defeated Tony Davis 4-1 to send Tony to the rail in 4th place.

Williams didn’t slow down as he then went on to defeat Willkom 4-1 in the semi-final match, to earn his place in the finals against Murphey.

Murphey turned the tables on Williams though, and defeated him 4-1 in the first and only set of the finals.

The 9s & Under event saw 7 rated player William Weiss take the hot-seat with a 4-4 win over Bill Vander Weyst.

The one loss side was coming down to Matt Gagne & Daric Craft. Gagne had stayed on the winners side most of the day, while Craft had lost to Vander Weyst early in the event and was forced to ride the left side of the brackets all day. Gagne would come out ahead in the match 6-5, and Craft would settle for 4th place.

Gagne stayed hot and defeated Vander Weyst 5-2 in the next match.

Instead of playing out the finals, Weiss and Gagne agreed on a split of first and second place prize money.

Oh, For Rating’s Sake!

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

I recently posted up the following question online: If someone new moves to Arizona and wants to start playing in local pool tournaments — but quickly learns that they need a rating to do so — what do you tell them?

Some people didn’t think I was being serious in asking that question. They held the opinion that I, along with everyone else who has been in Arizona for a while, already knows how our rating system works, so why was I asking? Others thought I was asking, “How do raters rate people?” and offered their suggestions on things they felt needed to be done to ensure that accurate ratings are initially set.

Only a couple people seemed to actually understand my question, and also understand my reason for asking it. The responses from those who understood highlighted the fact that there really is no good answer to that question. That’s because no published list exists that tells people where they can go, and who they can see, to get their first rating. To my knowledge, no such list has ever existed. And that just puzzles me.

Almost every place that holds pool tourna-ments advertises those tournaments in the local billiard newspapers. In their ads, they tell

people the date and time of the tournament, the game, the format, the entry fee, the added money, the address, and the telephone number; all of which is pertinent information. But even though most of these tournaments are handi-capped and/or limited by skill level — which means every interested player is required to have a rating — none of them advertise who their tournament director is, and whether or not he or she can, or will, assign a new rating. Why is that? It doesn’t make sense to not use the rating service as another tool for promoting your room and your tournaments.

My online question revealed that some people seem to disagree that a problem exists with a “system” that does not make it clear how newcomers can get involved. They feel that if over 10,000 players have already figured it out, then anybody can do it. They have a valid point there, but that still doesn’t mean the process can’t be improved upon. And that’s what Bull Shooters and myself have decided to do.

In May, Bull Shooters will begin holding two weekly tournaments. One tournament will be 8-Ball while the other will be 9-Ball. Both will be open and non-handicapped. The entry fee for each player will be the equivalent of his/her rating, i.e. 4’s pay $4 — 10-2’s pay $12. Un-

rated players will be charged $12 to play their first tournament, after which a rating will be assigned to them and they can play at that rate in subsequent tournaments.

But the tournaments are just one way new play-ers will be able to get a rating at Bull Shooters. The other way is to schedule a rating session with myself, Bull Shooters’ representative on the Arizona Rating Committee. The fee for the session will be $20. Once the rating session has been completed, the applicant will be issued a temporary rating card that will be valid until the date of the next meeting of the rating com-mittee, at which time their final rating will be added to the official rating list. It will be ex-plained to new applicants that the rating on their temporary rating card may, or may not, be hon-ored at establishments other than Bull Shooters, but will at least give everyone a starting point for observation and evaluation in determining a final rating.

We at Bull Shooters are not trying to upset the apple cart. We understand the importance of protecting Arizona’s established players from dishonest hustlers who would try to sneak their way in with a low rating and then grab a wad of easy money before being caught. But we also understand that there is a need for making the system more accessible to honest newcomers who have no other intention than to compete fairly; and that is the need we are trying to meet.

More information on Bull Shooters’ tourna-ments and rating procedure will be available through various media communications, soon.

Seth and Jeff Win Skip and Jan’s Scotch

Chet Lahti moved his 16 & Under Scotch Doubles 9-ball event to Skip and Jan’s on April 4th, much to the delight of the nineteen teams that took their shot at first place.

Seth Johnson & Jeff Vikete were the happiest of the teams, as they took the hot-seat with a one-sided 5-1 win over Junior Flores & Steve Stowers.

At the same time as the hot-seat match, Doug Hanson & Jason Shriner were eliminating Chad Purvis & David Link in fourth place.

Doug & Jason would settle for third place, after losing to Junior & Steve 8-6.

The finals was another win for Seth & Jeff, as they defeated Junior & Steve 5-3 in the first set.

Complete Payouts:1st Seth Johnson & Jeff Vikete $8102nd Junior Flores & Steve Stowers $3153rd Doug Hanson & Jason Shriner $1504th Chad Purvis & David Link $455th Billy Norish & Tony Denton $205th Matt Koskella & Justin Turner $20

Owen & Mahoney Win Close One at Kittys

Bill Owen & Pat Mahoney clawed out two hill-hill wins over William Weiss & Mark Norman to take first place at Kitty’s 13 & Under scotch doubles event on April 4th.

Win #1 for Bill & Pat came for the hot-seat, where they held off William & Mark in a hill-hill match.

Ken Gillies & Tom Martin were on a roll on the left side of the board with three straight wins, but would settle for third place after losing to William & Mark 8-5.

That win led to a rematch in the finals between Bill & Pat vs William & Mark. The first set of the finals couldn’t have been much closer with the score tied five different times before William & Mark scored an 8-6 win.

The second set was even closer as Bill & Pat scored a hill-hill win for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Bill Owen & Pat Mahoney $3402nd William Weiss & Mark Norman $1603rd Ken Gillies & Tom Martin $40

Walsh & North Win at Kittys

John Walsh teamed up with Scott North for an undefeated win at Kitty’s 12 & Under scotch doubles event on April 18th.

JW & Scott were unstoppable in the hot-seat match, where they defeated Jim Digregorio & Manny Steele 6-0.

Jim & Manny then lost to Dave Kay & his partner Rin in the semi-final match 7-4.

The opponents didn’t matter for JW & Scott, as they defeated Dave & Rin 6-3 in the first set of the finals.

Complete Payouts:1st John Walsh & Scott North $4302nd Dave Kay & Rin $2103rd Jim Digregorio & Manny Steele $30

Purdy & Schramm Win All Tucson Finals

Aaron Purdy & John Schramm topped an all-Tucson finals to win Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 25th.

Purdy & Schramm had very little difficulty taking the hot-seat with a 9-3 win over fellow Tucsonians Steve Barker & Scott Vogelsberg.

Chuck Ryan & Hugo Villanueva were able to derail plans for an all-Tucson final three teams, when they defeated Jose Mendoza & Diane McCoy 7-4 for 3rd and 4th place.

Chuck & Hugo could not break Tucson’s hold on the finals though, as they lost to Steve & Scott 9-5.

The final match looked to be fated for two sets as Steve & Scott raced to an early 3-0 lead, but Aaron & John came back to win the match 9-6 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Aaron Purdy & John Schramm $5102nd Steve Barker & Scott Vogelsberg $3103rd Chuck Ryan & Hugo Villanueva $150

Sophia Morquecho split her time between two events on the weekend of April 18th - 19th. One event saw thirty four 5’s and 6’s playing 8-ball, while the other event drew twenty two 7’s and 8’s for another 8-ball event.

The 7’s and 8’s finished play on Saturday, with Frank Alvarez mowing down the field of players. Alvarez took the hot-seat in a lopsided 4-1 match against Karloz Chavez.

Karloz found Ed Scott waiting on the one loss side. Ed had lost to Tenadore Lee in the second round, but then won four matches to challenge Chavez in the semi-finals. Scott would have to settle for third place though, after dropping the semi-final match to Chavez.

The final rematch between Alvarez and Chavez didn’t go any better for Chavez, as Alvarez cruised to a 4-0 win in the first and only set.

The 5’s and 6’s took two days to crown a winner, but it was Mike Bevins turn-ing in a dominating performance for first place.

Bevins looked pretty much unstoppable in his 4-1 win over Phillip Salas for the hot-seat

Salas would earn another shot at Bevins by defeating Leroy Smith 4-3 in the semi-final match.

The rematch between Bevins and Salas was almost a repeat of the hot-seat match, with Bevins running away with a 4-0 win in the first and only set.

Barrera and Siebels Split at Stingers

Joey Barrera and Kurt Siebels split two matches against each other, and then split 1st and 2nd place at a massive 8’s & Under event at Stingers on April 25th.

The first time the two players met was for the hot-seat, where Siebels scored a hill-hill win over Barrera.

The one loss side came down to two tired warriors as Burt Balancad faced off against Tony Page. Both players had lost their first matches of the day and had then won a total of 14 matches between them. Balancad would come out ahead of Page 7-2.

The full day of matches seemed to take their toll on Balancad as he then lost to a hot-shooting Barrera 7-3 in the semi-final match.

The first set of the finals was all Barrera, as he cruised to a 7-0 win. From there, both players agreed on a split of first and second place.

Nick Kline had already proven to the Diamond Pool Tour that he was one of the top junior play-ers in the state after two events, but at the third event - just one day after his seventeen birthday - he proved that he is one of the top players no matter what age is being considered.

Kline cruised through the B bracket without a loss, taking down such notables as 8 rated play-ers Trevor Long, Jamie Cole and Rick Schmitz. Kline’s finish puts him atop the Junior and B Player points lists.

Kline’s finish, as the “B bracket” hot seat win-ner, gave him the opportunity to fulfill one of his pool goals. “My goal at the start of the season was to just get as much experience as possible; and maybe play Scott Frost” said Kline after the tournament. Kline would “get to play” Frost, and he held his own in a 7-4 loss.

Kline says he has been playing the game for roughly four years. He got started playing pool when he would visit his Mom, where she worked at the Moose Lodge 319 in Prescott after school. “The only thing to do there is play darts or pool, and I got more interested in pool.” said Kline. When asked what drew him to the game of pool, Kline replied “I think I just like how many vari-eties as to how the game can end up. There are a million different ways a ball can roll and I find it fascinating how it rolls in that one spot”.

Kline joined the APA’s Junior league in Phoenix and he said that has helped his game a lot. Kline is rated a 7 in the APA and the league’s handicap system makes him have to try hard no matter who he plays. “I have to get to 55 before my opponents get to a different number. That makes me work as hard as playing another 7.” explained

Kline.

The APA and Diamond Pool Tour are not the only organized events that Kline has competed in. He revealed that he has taken a liking to one pocket and com-peted in a couple one pocket events at Barefoot Bob’s in Prescott. When asked what drew him to one pocket, Kline said “I enjoy that there is a lot more skill and thinking, strategy wise, involved than anything else I play”.

While noting Scott Frost’s confidence at the table as something he would like to emulate, Kline mentioned a couple other top players that he especially likes. “I recently started a stroke copying Corey Deuel. It’s a loose stroke, that tightens up as you deliver the stroke. It’s been working really well. I always like the way Shane Van Boening plays too. He has a very powerful stroke.” said Kline.

When asked about his high finish on the Diamond Tour, Kline revealed the secret to his success. “Whenever I play a tournament, and younger players who look up to me are playing, I always tell them to just have fun with it. You played to get more experience, but also to have fun. I took my own advice this time and no matter what happened, if I shot a bad shot or got a lucky roll, I just had fun with it. “

Kline’s 3rd place finish earned him $700 in prize money, and he says he is saving up that money for a new Meucci cue that he has his eye on.

When asked about the future, Kline said that his main goal was “to try to be the best. I have fun with it and I might as well do something that I enjoy. If I could be up there with players like Shane and Corey and Scott, that would be great”.

Kline isn’t just a kid with the idea of making mil-lions playing pool though. He is currently learning how to make cues and hopes to study woodwork-ing in college to help with that goal. He says he might like to run a pool hall or maybe teach others how to play when he gets older. No matter what it is that he ends up doing, he is certain that he wants to work within the pool industry.

As for the short term future, Kline plans on com-peting at all of the Diamond Pool Tour stops, as well as the upcoming Az State Junior Champion-ship at Bullshooters in May. He has hopes that a good finish there will qualify him to play in the Junior Nationals event in Las Vegas later this year and he hopes to represent his state well in that event.

The pool world has seen a lot of young talent get sidetracked with everything that can grab a young-ster’s attention. Kline doesn’t strike us as someone who is just into the game for the short term though. We expect to see a lot more of Kline in the Arizona pool scene in the year’s to come.

Nick Kline - Top Junior with plans for the future

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

Hello, Valley of the Sun foosers! Just as the weather is starting to warm up here in the valley, anticipation for the start of the 2015 Summer League is also heating up. We’re seeing more and more newcomers showing up at events around the valley, and the possibility to add a few more teams for the next league, which is tentatively scheduled to start in early June.

INTERIM LEAGUEWe just wrapped up 11 weeks of our Interim League tournaments, having had 51 differ-ent foosers participate to date. Turnout at the events has been steady with an average of 9 teams competing each week. An interesting fact is that there have been five events where teams including lower handicap players (rat-ings below 2.0) have taken first place. Our beginners are undeniably bringing their skill levels up and are more than capable of con-tending against the veteran players. Congratu-lations go out to Brian Sternberg, Phil Tran, Colten Dusenberry, Jacqueline d’Estries, Paul Freund, and Rick Weirman on raising their games so rapidly.

Brian Salke continues to lead the interim league with a .800 winning percentage, Billy Nolan following up with .663, Brian Sternberg (rookie) at .662, and Jim Sherman at .652. Interim events are always on Wednesday nights and are typically held at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. However, keep your eyes and ears open for a possible new interim event on Sat-urday afternoon at Stinger’s Sports Bar in the west valley!

TOURNAMENTSWeekly tourneys are continuing to take place at Cactus Moon in Mesa on Friday nights, Stinger’s Sports Bar in northwest Phoenix on Saturday nights, and The Loft Again in north Phoenix on Sunday afternoons. The formats vary from Draw Your Partner (DYP), Bring Your Partner (BYP), No-Two-Pro BYP, Roto Doubles DYP, Roto Doubles High-Low DYP, Pick Your Partner (PYP), or 12 Limited. De-tails on each format can be found by visiting www.ArizonaFoosball.com and clicking on Coming Events.

The level of players can fluctuate from Begin-ner to Pro-Master at some of these events. Interpretation: Take advantage of learning from those better than you!

SPECIAL: CHAMPIONS OF SEASONS PAST(Started last month, we re-live some accom-plishments from previous season’s champs...)

Foos Bowl XI Champions: #Town. This team ended the 2013 Spring season in third place in the Eastern Conference, yet beat both higher seeded teams (Ginsu and Hot Shots: Part Foos) to gain a birth to the title match. #Town came out on top over the Western Champions, Stingers, with a solid 3-1 victory in the final.

Foos Bowl X Champions: Hot Shots: Part Foos. This second version of the original Hot Shots team ended the regular season in third place in the Eastern Conference, and defeated both the first and second place teams (Ginsu and #Town, respectively) in the playoffs to earn their shot at the title. The West was repre-sented by the Foos Brothers, who finished the season atop their conference. However, once again, the East rose to the challenge and came out on top, easily beating the “Brothers” 4-1.

2015 SUMMER LEAGUEEveryone who’s been in the league over the past several years realizes how awesome, well organized, and fun it is. Where else can a true beginner in a new sport realize success against veteran players on a consistent basis, bringing them back again and again to continue their quest at improving their game? Each fresh season always offers up new and improved fac-ets, whether it’s tweaking the rules, enhancing the website, or adding new players, teams, and venues. The current Arizona Foosball League has become a veritable “Tour de Foos”!

The 2015 Summer League is tentatively sched-uled to start early June and preparation is start-ing to take shape. As always, players of all skill levels are welcome to join. Also, we are currently looking to add several coordinators to help with league startup and administration (by the way, coordinators get free league entry!). If you are interested in getting involved at any level, visit www.ArizonaFoosball.com and join the current sign-up sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818.Keep Foosin’ Fun!
