As you can see from the paper in your hands, we had to bite the bullet and expand the paper again. This is the first time we have published a paper with this many pages. I don’t see the paper staying this large; we just had a lot of content this month and had to expand to make it all fit. Vegas is right around the corner for the pool players. Can’t wait to see how everyone does out there. And the dart players just got back from the NDA’s in Vegas. Look for results from that one next month. We finally have some photos from the Az Open this month. Sorry about the delay on those. Nice to see so many players out at various tournaments last month. It sure does appear that more players are getting out and playing. It could just be my imagination, but I sure hope not.

John Smith took the longest route possible to the finals and put on a dominating performance in those finals to capture the third Desert Clas-sic Tour stop of the season at Skip and Jan’s on March 31st and April 1st.

With the third stop’s game being bar-table 8-ball, a strong field was expected and that field did not disappoint. Forty six players including such notables as tour points leader Gus Briseno, Scott Frost, Chuck Evans, Nick De Leon and Brett Huth where in attendance. Toss in a handful of the west side’s top bar table players, and a con-tingent of players from Tucson that included Don Westbrooks, Rudy Alameda, Chris Paradowski and Mike Hamman.

The field for this one was so strong that it was hard to choose a clear cut favorite. With that in mind, fans might not have placed much impor-tance on Nick De Leon’s first round win over John Smith. What the fans didn’t know is that the loss to De Leon would be the only loss Smith would take for the weekend.

Gus Briseno’s hope for another tour victory were dashed on Saturday with losses to De Leon and Tres Kane.

The two players who went through the field untouched to face off for the hot-seat were Mike Sandoval (looking for his first DCT Tour win) and Brett Huth (looking to shake his recent string of third place finishes).

Sandoval had already scored wins over Preacher Ronn, Lenny Marshall, Dennis Orender and Chris Paradowski - and it looked like he might be getting fitted for his first DCT crown after a lopsided 7-2 win over Huth for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, John Smith was navigating a very dangerous minefield of tough opponents. Smith had wins over Mike Ham-man, Dennis Orender, Jose Gonzales, Tres Kane, Chuck Evans and then Brett Huth for 2nd/3rd place. (Huth’s third straight third place fin-ish at a DCT stop).

The finals were a text book example of a player taking his opponent out of his game as the player that John Smith allowed to show himself in the finals was not the Mike Sandoval who had earned that spot in the finals. Smith played a very calculated game and was simply too strong for anyone in the room to be able to stop him.

The first set of the finals saw Smith win four games before Sandoval could move a bead, and Smith was on the hill at 6-1 before Sandoval would move his second bead. The final score of the first set was 7-2, and half of Smith’s seven wins were in the form of table runs.

If the first set was bad for Sandoval, the second set would be even worse. The first game saw Sandoval run six balls and leave himself hooked. Sandoval would bring out the jump stick, but would not be able to hit the hidden object ball. And that is the way the set would go for him. The only good thing about the set for Sandoval was that Smith made it quick and merciful with a 6-0 win.

With side pots included, Smith pocketed $1025 for first

place, while Sandoval settled for $565 for second. Chuck Evans, who finished in fourth place, moved to the top of the points list with a slim lead over Brett Huth.

The Desert Classic Tour’s next stop will be June 23rd and 24th at Pockets in Tucson.

Final Payouts (including side pots):1st John Smith $10252nd Mike Sandoval $5653rd Brett Huth $3554th Chuck Evans $2005th Tres Kane $1205th Chris Paradowski $1207th Scott Frost $1157th Jose Gonzalez $75

“Hollywood” Bell Fights Back to the Top In Metro Tournament

By W. Scot Grey

Phoenix—Split-ting the top prize on the nine-ball pool tournament at Metro Sportz Bar were Bruce Osburn and George “Holly-wood” Bell, Mon. April 9.

Osburn held the winner’s bracket solidly and had to wait for the loser’s bracket to finish, where Bell fought back to the top. By the time he got there, Osburn had “had enough,” and decided to split the top prize so both got to take home $70.

Bell also won the side pot for an additional $35. Coming in 3rd was “Aroz,” taking home a $30 prize in the one-off handicap nine-ball tournament.

Only the top three get a pay out in the $5 entry tournament. Osburn and Bell won out of 17 players, “about average turn out,” said the tournament director.

Metro Sportz Bar runs pool tournaments every day save Wednesday, and are located at 10402 N. Black Canyon Highway, in the Metrocenter loop, south of Peoria.

Saenz undefeated at MetroGabe Saenz went unde-feated through a full field of 33 players to win the Metro Sportz Bar’s 6’s & Under 9-ball event on April 7th.

Saenz defeated Miguel 6-2 for the hot-seat and made himself comfortable wait-ing for an opponent in the finals.

That opponent would be Justin Wethington, who had dropped an early match to Daniel Jaworski and came back to win six matches on the one loss side, including a win over Miguel in the semi-finals.

The final match would be a close one, but Saenz eventually took the match 6-4 for first place.

Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill, in Glendale, Ari-zona, hosted Stop #2 of the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour on April 14th & 15th. Longtime AWBT favorite, Susan Williams was the winner, 7-3, over Terri Johnson-McCauley. Susan would claim her first title in over a year. For Terri, who traveled all the way from Farmington, New Mexico, it was her highest AWBT finish ever.

With twelve (12) 7’ Diamond tables, Stinger’s was an excellent host for AWBT’s only bar table event for 2012. This tournament was scheduled to get our gals ready to compete in the BCAPL Nationals in Las Vegas in May. We saw several new faces and welcomed back some old friends as twenty-six (26) ladies came out Saturday to play. With such a strong response, this will surely be a yearly event.

Saturday’s play began with races to five in both the winner’s and loser’s brackets. Play was ag-gressive and games that used to slow matches to a crawl were won in a matter of minutes by strong tactics and accurate shooting. Many layouts were expertly sliced and diced for 8-ball runouts. This was not your Grandmother’s 8-ball game. With all the excellent play on Saturday, only eight (8) would come back for Sunday. On the A-side, it was Susan Williams, Terri John-sonMcCauley, Leandrea Gaff and Jodie Villegas. On the B-side it was Sara Miller, Veronica Poore, Justine Bishop and Beverly Cook.

Susan would win the hot seat by defeating Jodie 5-1, and then overcome a, 1-3 deficit, and beat Terri. Veronica Poore took time out from her doctoral studies to win 5-4 over Bev Cook, only to lose to Jodie 5-3 and take home a nice 5th-6th finish. Sara Miller excused Justine Bishop 5-3 to finish celebrating Greek Easter. Her next match

was with arch enemy Le-andrea Gaff who originally put Sara in the loser’s side. These two seem to play each other every tournament. This time Leo was the victor 5-3 leaving Sara in 5th-6th hop-ing for another chance to beat Leo in the next tourna-ment. Jodie Villegas ended Leandrea’s run by beating her 5-3. Great job Leo! Then it was Terri Johnson McCau-ley’s turn to stop Jodie 5-3. A nice 3rd place finish might be Jodie’s highest AWBT result to date.

The finals, a single race to 7, would be a rematch between Susan Williams and Terri Johnson McCauley. Terri had come ever so close in the previous match scratching with only the 8-ball left to go up 4-1 only to lose 5-3. Susan knew she had a dangerous foe. The match stayed close up until 3-3 but then Susan pulled away, winning the next four games in a row for the match and the title. Congratulations to Susan on some great runout 8-ball. Congratulations to 2nd place fin-isher, Terri Johnson McCauley. You played awesome.

The 2nd Chance tournament was taken by Jaye Succo, 4-3 over Alicia Streenz. We had ten (10) players return for the free tournament and even Co-Director, Kris-tie, put in her $5 dollars to play. Stingers added $50, bringing the redemption tournament prize fund to $145. Jaye received $75 for 1st, Alicia $45 for 2nd and Rayna Gainey, who traveled with Alicia up from Tucson, got $25 for 3rd.

The AWBT would like to thank Stinger’s owner Dale Hanson for hosting and adding a total of $350 to both tournaments. Pool players, come and check out Sting

er’s newly remodeled room. With twelve 7’ Diamonds, two 9’ Diamonds and two Valley bar boxes, Stingers has positioned itself as a major room in the Valley.

Thanks to AWBT sponsor Jose Gonzales and LAS GLORIAS GRILL for adding $100.

Thanks to the friends of the AWBT for adding $200. We encourage this type of behavior. Contact Tres Kane if you would like to become a friend of the AWBT.

Thanks to my Co-Director Kristie Ortega for all her hard work in making the tournament run smoothly. Thanks to Scooter for helping set up and teardown of the tournament.

Good luck to all AWBT members in Vegas. Let ‘em know where you come from.

The AWBT’s Stop #3 is Skip ‘n Jan’s in Tempe, June 30th-July 1st. The game is 9-ball on 9’ tables. Come play, have some fun and bring a friend!

Susan Williams is back and wins Stop #2 of the AWBT 2012 Season

Final Eight Players

Alvarez & Cole Split Knobbys 8-Ball

Frank Alvarez split two matches with Tyson Cole, and then decided to split first and second place with him at the Knobby’s April Open 8-Ball event on April 6th.

Alvarez and Cole’s first meeting was for the hot-seat, and that match went to Alvarez with a close 2-1 scoreline.

After Cole eliminated Rob Takacs in third place, Alvarez and Cole faced off again in the true double elimination finals.

The first set of the finals saw Cole score a 2-0 win and that was enough for both players as they decided to split from there.

The next Open 8-Ball event at Knobbys will be on May 4th.

Total Payouts:1st Frank Alvarez $1802nd Tyson Cole $1803rd Rob Takacs $804th Steve Henderson $20

Kitty’s Scotch Split

The team of Pete Barrios & Mel Kirsch were undefeated in a field of eighteen teams to split the tournament with the team of Leo Satterwhite & Dan Young.

Barrios & Kirsch defeated the team of Tenadore Lee & Billy Coulston 9-2 in a one sided match for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Lee & Coulston faced off against familiar opponents - Sat-terwhite & Young, who they had beaten on the winners side in a 9-1 massacre.

The second meeting between these teams would go a little different. With the handicap, Satterwhite and Young were racing to six, while Lee and Coulston were going to nine. Satterwhite and Young stayed with them in a close match and ended up winning by a final score of 6-6.

Considering the late hour, a split was negotiated between the final two teams, with Barrios and Kirsch being awarded first place in the event.

Payouts:1st Pete Barrios & Mel Kirsch $5402nd Leo Satterwhite & Dan Young $3603rd Billy Coulston & Tenadore Lee $1504th George Pickering & Jason Crugar $40

Bobbitt and Muchow Wins at Kittys

Twenty Three teams made their way to Kitty’s on April 28th for the April 15th & Under Scotch Doubles event. They would face off for over $1300 in total prize money.

The hot-seat match found Chuck Bobbitt and Kevin Muchow facing off against Bill Wilcox and Dennis Winkler. After a hard fought match, Chuck and Kevin won the hot seat.

Coming through the loser side, Layton Thomas and Junior Flores won 4rd place and took home $ 160.

After the win over Layton and Junior, Ricky Jones and Don Schilling dropped a match to Bill and Dennis to settle for 3rd place and $ 140 in prize money.

The day ended with a rematch between Chuck & Kevin vs Bill & Dennis.

Chuck & Kevin out lasted Bill & Dennis claiming 1st place and $ 710. For their efforts, Bill and Dennis won 2nd and took home $370.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

Dennis Winkler, Bill Wilcox, Kitty Carroll, Kevin Muchow and Chuck Bobbitt

APA Shark Bite Event

The APA raised over $750 to benefit the local shriners in their 1st annual ‘Shark Bite’ pool tournament held at the Cactus Moon Sports Grill in Mesa on April 21. 39 players turned out to play in a very unique format of 8 ball. In this tournament, players were allowed to ‘shark’ their opponents. Players found themselves hav-ing to not only deal with their opponent trying to distract them, but there were also two young ladies walking around and randomly victimizing players as well. Some of the stunts that were played on shooters were making them shoot with a very short cue, or a cue with no tip. Some even went so far as having to shoot with a mop handle. It was all in great fun though and everyone had a great time. There were raffles that netted some great gifts from some very generous sponsors. Prizes included Glider rides, Golfland passes, Dinners, and a break cue.

The first place winner of the tournament was Taura Dugan, who is a very big supporter of the APA pool league. She received the 1st place trophy and a $75 gift Certificate to Houston’s Steak House. Second place trophy and a nice gift basket went to Pat McNichols

The APA and Shriners would like to thank City Billiards, Joe’s Crab Shack, and Estrella Sailport for their contributions to this benefit tournament. They would also like to thank Cactus Moon Sports Grill for letting them hold the event in their establishment who were also gracious enough to let the players and spec-tators stay after the tournament for fight night waving the cover charge. This event would not have been the success it was without all of the support from these groups.

Next year should be even bigger and better.

Three Phoenix players and two Scotch Doubles teams competed in the APA Single Nationals Tournament in Las Vegas Nevada on April 25 through the 29th. Will Sexton, rated a 7 in the APA, was the top performer from Phoenix finish-ing in seventeenth place from a field of several hundred players. Will topped some of the very best players in the country while playing for $15,000 in cash and prizes. Other players from our area were David McCauley and Christine Hanson, both of whom play out of Bullshooters on the west side of Phoenix. David, who was recently rated a skill level 6, performed excep-tionally well at the new level. David also serves as a Division Representative for the Phoenix APA. Christine plays at a skill level 3 and was also playing for $15000 in her tier level. Gina Nowlin, APA’s league operator here in Maricopa, said Christine has improved her game so much in just a very short time.

Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles teams were Tim and Nancy Witts, and Karlos Chavez and Jamie Goodwin. Tim and Nancy are a husband and wife team that has been playing together for several years. They play on a five person team and they also compete on a Jack and Jill doubles team that plays at Bullshooters every Friday night. It is from this J&J Scotch Doubles division that they qualified to compete in Vegas. Tim is no stranger to the APA National scene. He is an active National Referee during the Team Nation-als that are played in August, and he and his wife Nancy are big supporters of our League, Gina Said. Karlos and Jamie qualified for this event by winning a special Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles tournament that was held at Main Street Billiards on Valentine Day. This tournament is a yearly event that qualifies the doubles teams to go to Las Vegas and compete for $25000 in cash and

prizes.

The Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles tournament is incor-porated into the Singles pro-gram each April at the APA Single National Tournament. APA pays for the participants to travel, stay and play in the event. This program is the best value for your dollar, said Gina. You qualify on a local board, and then win at the Regional level, and you are off to Vegas on the APA. All this for just $15 cost to play on the local board with 7 other players.

The Single National Tourna-ment is the prequel to the Team Nationals that will be played in August. The APA Team Nationals is listed in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records ‘as the larg-est pool tournament in the world. Over 900 teams com-peted in last year’s event and over $1.5 million was given out in the National events.

APA Phoenix Metro held its 1st Annual Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) Junior National 9-Ball Championship Qualifying Tournament April 29th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. 2 entries were up for grabs in the 14 and under boys and 1 for the 14 and under girls. The BEF will host their 24th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Cham-pionships on July 11 -15, 2012, at Romine’s High Pockets in Greenfield, Wisconsin.

On the boy’s side, Mark Avalos took control of the hot seat while Michael Dale, Orlando Chavez and Jahnythan Craig battled it out on the loser’s side. Orlando took the 1st match and waited for his opponent while Michael and Jahnythan battled it out to see who would be playing Or-lando and going forward. Finally it was Jahny-than playing Orlando to see who would advance to play Mark for 1st Place. It was decided that since both Mark and Orlando were going to get the entries into the BEF Junior National that they would as the saying goes split the 1st and 2nd place winnings with no real 1st or 2nd place win-ners since APA Phoenix Metro League Operator Gina Nowlin believes all the Junior players who participated in this tournament were winners.

On the girls side it was Selena West, Kyra Avalos and Hailey Dauphine who were going to battle it out for the one entry. Selena grabbed control of the hot seat while Kyra came around to play Selena for the 1st place prize. At the end it was Selena who won the entry to the National Event.

To participate in the BEF Junior Nationals, play-ers must earn entry through a BEF qualifier, or must be appointed by their local junior league. The national event features four divisions: boys 18 and under, girls 18 and under, boys 14 and un-der and girls 14 and under. Qualifiers will be held

throughout the United States and are currently being scheduled through May.

In addition to winning the entries APA Phoenix Metro will be giv-ing each participant a travel al-lowance to help with expenses. The last event to raise funds for this trip will be a car wash and raffle on June 9th from 12:00 NOON to 3:00 PM at Bullshooters (35th Ave. and Peoria).

APA Phoenix Metro has over 25 junior players who par-ticipate in league play every other Sunday at 1:00 PM at Bullshooters. It is open to all juniors in Maricopa County. The kids range in age from 6 to 17. Juniors are split into two divisions 6-11 and 12-17. The kids in this league know how to play pool, but more importantly they also know how to show respect to their opponent and be a good sport. If interested in signing up a junior call 602-920-9193.

Again we would like to thank Mike Bates from Bullshooters and his family for letting us host this event there and as always for their support.

Arizona Hot Shots has long watched the dart community in Arizona be treated to ‘The Mas-ters’ division in their league system. For those that don’t know what the Dart Masters are let me explain. This ‘draft style’ league takes the best 8 dart players in stats and designates them as captains. The league holds a draft party in where the captains choose teammates from a list of interested players in a draft style format to form their teams. Eight captains, three draft rounds, eight outstanding teams. Team captains can choose their ‘picks’ each round from the player list considering many factors. Some captains use the players previous statistics, choose them by their known ability or just people they like or are friends with. But when 1st place takes home $2000 and only the top four teams cash, captains need to choose wisely. After the 10 week season is over and players are recognized as the best of the best and paid accordingly ($2000), the top eight players in stats are designated as captains for the upcoming session. If one captain chooses to sit out, they go on down to the next player in stats to offer him/her the captainship.

Now, Dart Master (Mike Bates) was told it wouldn’t work in the beginning. People will lose interest and it will not last. Well, the first season had over 70 players sign up with only 32 spots available. After the first season ended, the inter-est grew even larger and the list of players not chosen so long that Dart Master formed the ‘B’ Masters division to accommodate 8 more teams. This gave many interested players a chance to play and battle for big prize money & recogni-tion of being a master player. Many players have found their way to the A’s by being noticed in the B’s. B division started with the top eight play-ers listed in stats that were not chosen for the A’s becoming captains in the ‘B’ Masters Division.

Thus the B’s started its long run. Continue on years later and with the growth of the top lady shooters Phoe-nix has seen the Lady Masters division formed. This format/league is now regarded as the best run league & format in the nation and giving Arizona the status of having the BEST dart players in the country.

What has enamored me with the Masters format was I witnessed dart players work so hard to improve in their stats, abilities and tournament performance just to improve their chances of making the A’s. Whereas, I have seen over the years many tournament pool play-ers dumb down their games, for lack of a better term, to stay rated lower than their ability just to win a few tournaments or have a gambling edge when discussing ratings. I love the concept of these players over the years doing everything to improve and get noticed to be picked to be on a Masters team. Years ago the kids of tomorrow that were working hard to play in the Masters are some of Arizona’s best Dart Players (Masters) today. Mike Scarborough and Justin Babel are two examples of that drive and success. I want to see this format used in pool to bring out the best players to compete against the best. To have captains draft players who they may not have ever played with before. To provide many up-coming players the chance to team up with great players to further their game. And the chance to become Mas-ters Champions.

Format - Monday Night Masters Draft 8-Ball10 Weeks – 16 race to two matches nightly played In-House @ Bullshooters on 7’ Tables

$100 Per Player paid at the draft. 100% plus payback to the players

1st Place - $20002nd Place - $10003rd Place - $5004th Place - $200

The Awards Banquet/Payout Party will feature a $500 added blind draw scotch tournament with a $15.00 entry fee. That is potentially a $1000 payout without any subs even participating.

1st session the league director will determine by Known Ability (KA) the top 8 players and desig-nate them as captains. Subsequent seasons the cap-tains will be determined by current stats or (KA) for new incoming players. Draft Night will be held at Bullshooters Sports Bar on June 4th with play beginning on June 11th. Interested players can go to the league website and have their name added to the draft list. Everybody is eligible to sign up.

Friendship More Important Than Win For Groggy’s 8-Ball Tournament

By W. Scot Grey

Mesa—The seri-ous players take most tournaments, but the winner of the April 10 match at Groggy’s just enjoys his friends.

Dave Albrecht, who came in first in the regular Tues 8-ball tournament has more fun playing if it isn’t serious.

“These are my friends, there’s no animosity,” said Albrecht.

Not being serious doesn’t mean the matches are easy. Albrecht fought off a packed house of players, including “the favorite,” according to the tournament director.

But the two who split second and third, calling the match before it was played, were friends Joey Barrera and Michael J.

“By the time we get to the top three, the director is gone, and we all know who will win, so it is easier just to split second/third and give the victory to Dave,” said Barrera.

Groggy’s holds pool tournaments every Tues, Thurs, and Sat, and are located at 2207 W. Main St in Mesa, just off SR101.

Charlie & Quinten at Groggys

Sixteen Scotch Doubles teams came to Groggy’s on April 7th ready to vie for over $900 in prize money.

The hot seat match pitted Charlie and Quinten against Rich and Wizzard. In the end, Charlie and Quinten held the hot seat.

After coming through the one loss side, Tony and Ray played Rich and Wizzard for 3rd place. After a hard fought match, Rich and Wizzard claimed 3rd place and $ 80.

In the end, Charlie and Quinten defended their position and claimed 1st, while Tony and Ray laid claim to 2nd. For their efforts, Tony and Ray went home with $ 185, while Charlie and Quinten received $ 605

As always, Leon and his staff provided a great venue, wonderful food and ex-cellent service.

By Roger LongAdvanced Certifi ed Instructor

Jerry Briesath, a man long con-sidered by many people to be this country’s foremost pocket billiard instructor, has fi nally come out with another DVD. This second DVD titled, A Pool Lesson, is a great follow-up to Jerry’s BCA produced, HOW TO PLAY POOL RIGHT.

In A Pool Lesson, Jerry again provides all the basic instruc-tion found in HOW TO PLAY POOL RIGHT, but then he adds another 3-1/2 hours of information that one would normally obtain only through years of lessons and experi-ence. In this new DVD, Jerry receives assistance from for-mer world-class player, Mark Wilson, who now spends much his time as a master instructor, himself.

A Pool Lesson has something for everybody. Mere begin-ners will be delighted to learn the basics of stance, grip,

bridge, and stroke as Jerry presents it all in a relaxing style that can make viewers feel as though they are sitting right there in the room with him and they are his solitary student. As well, intermediate players are going to love learning about tangent lines, speed trade-off, and the importance of prac-ticing to gain position off of “hangers.” Even advanced players will enjoy Jerry’s perspective on such topics as the break, the 30-Degree Rule, and throw shots. Plus, there is a lot more for players of all levels.

The content in this 3-disc video is well thought out. Disc #1 pertains mainly to the fundamentals, while discs 2 & 3 contain the “meatier” stuff. In the disc folder, each disc has its full menu printed out in the order it is presented on the disc. This makes fi nding any desired subject quick and easy for viewers. Also, the camera work, coupled with Jerry’s smooth narration and Mark’s precise execution, make this DVD set a powerful addition to any serious student’s collection.

If there is any-thing about A Pool Lesson I didn’t like, it would probably have to be that I felt like maybe a little less time could have been spent on dem-onstrating some of the shots, and that time-savings could have then been used to explain why some things work the way they do rather than leaving the viewer with the impression that they must accept certain points merely because the author said so.

At any rate, A Pool Lesson is still a great value.

Mike, Why do so many people get excited about the NDA Vegas tournament, they seem to plan a year in advance to go?

It is a special tournament that you have to go at least once to understand what it is about.

One great thing is you can be a beginner and play people from all over the world with the same skill level. You meet people from different states and countries and make friends for life with some of them.

For Arizona players, it is even more special because they party together, go places together andhang out together.

Since 1990, I think Arizona has ranked 1st or 2nd on how many players attend the tournament.

You can see the top soft tip players in the world battle in singles , doubles and team events. You can see play-ers from our great country compete on Team USA against the best of the best from all over the world.

It can be a 10 day party with lots of fun and lots of darts. Some players take their only vacations of the year at the tournament, others have been known to quit their jobs so they could go. Sounds crazy? It’s happened and more than once.

Many of our players have moved and now play in other states and they get a chance to see their former teammates

and see how well each is shooting.

For many years, a player from Ger-many named Stephan would bring me a bottle of wine from his home town in Germany. It is crazy when you play a team and they have their own inter-preter. It is also a great time to show the rest of the soft tip world how good players from the USA are, and espe-cially from our great state.

Many players have had the honor of going to Vegas and representing our state and our country.

It is the best time you can have, and it’s a great party.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Daryl Chester and a full house of Phoenix area dart players made their way to Jester’s Billiards on March 31st for a fundraiser to benefit the fam-ily of longtime dart player Katie Lawien, who passed away in February from a brain aneurism.

With a healthly supply of raffle prizes donated by such notables as Troy Vending, DogFish Head Brewery, Mike Bates (Bullshooters), Don Stankus, Daryl Chester and Fox Sports; there was a steady flow of raffle tickets being pur-chased throughout the day.

The blind draw doubles event saw Kim Swift and Vic Carlucci defeat Garry Kelloge and Lon-nie Amone for first place.

After the dust settled, everyone involved had raised just over $2,100 for Katie’s family.

Nice job everyone..

SEASONING, DO YOU HAVE IT?

So you practice, you play league and you go to your Friday tournaments thinking that when you walk into a room like the NDA or similar you are about to be a force to domi-nate your level… then BAM, you are out!!! “How can I be out? Don’t these guys know I work hard at my game and I am a PLAYER?” So what hap-pened???? Well I had this chat with a few players at the NDA so I will share my thoughts…. What happened is you THOUGHT you were good, you THOUGHT you were ready and you THOUGHT you had all the skills needed… well now you get to think about why you did not see the results you wanted. The truth is you may have the some of the skills to be a success but what you are is like a perfectly cooked steak

that was bland…you had no seasoning. Seasoning?? “What’s that?” You ask, “ I play my tournaments every weekend. Is that not gaining me experience?” Sorry, NO!! What you gained was one event experience multiple times over. The trick to being a player is you need to leave your pub to gain experience, you need to go get un-comfortable by going in to a new place to play. Play new players, new atmospheres and different rules even. Get in your car and drive to Southern Cali once in awhile to play out there. Drive to Las Vegas to play an event up there or jump on a plane to really test yourself. Hell, go play a steel event even though you do not play steel. If you have spent any time around me at all you will have heard me use the words “he’s a good pub player” or “ he’s a big fi sh in his pond.” I am not slighting people as some may think, I am just stating that when they become

UNCOMFORTABLE they will not be the same player anymore. So you need to go out of your way to play events AWAY from your comfort zone if you want to really improve. Then there is even a change in how you play the game at the big events. There was an event that took place during a Team Cricket match which prompted one of my guys to get upset and my response was “ Hey chill! We are not in the pub anymore, do you really think he is not going to make sure you can’t win this game?” The whole “respect” “disrespect” thing gets left in your league game. Surpris-ing to some when they watch me in a big event is that I actually score a lot in a match but when I play locally I just close down the numbers and score as needed. Now when I am off in Asia playing for the big money? If I hit a 7-9 in the 20’s and the other guy opens weak with like a 3-5 mark I may just go up there and hit another 9 in the

20’s to ensure he will always be behind me. Why have a 10 point lead when having 190 point lead means you remove all the pressure from yourself, place an impossible shot on the other guy and now you get to cruise out the game? Ahh that’s where SEASONING (aka EXPERIENCE) comes in. So do yourself a favor and go get the experience you need to win those matches. Leave being a big fi sh behind to transform to being a SHARK in the sea.

Playing darts is all about competition, so New League Order is bringing some competition to league operators in the Central Valley.

“We just want to make darts better,” said Gary Zies, co-owner of NLO.

Zies started NLO in Yuma three years ago, to strike out on his own as a vending supplier to bring jukeboxes, pool tables, ATMs, video games and of course darts to an underserved area of the Valley.

Part of the contract he worked out with Arachnid, one of the foremost dartboard manufacturers, was that he would wait two years to move into the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

Those two years were up in November, so Zies teamed-up with Tobin Crouch to re-imagine dart leagues for the Central Valley.

Crouch had more than two decades of experience running leagues for Troy Vending, the leading dart league operator in the valley.

Zies and Crouch wanted to pave the way for new players, and eventually bring a masters level game back downtown.

“I’m not trying to put down Troy Vending,” Zies said, “but they weren’t servicing beginners very well, and if you want to play masters level, you have to go to the west valley.”

Zies has his dartboards in three locations downtown so far: The Catalina, at 16th St. and Thomas Road, Daisy Dukes, near 56th St. and

McDowell Road, and The Hideaway, at 32nd St. and Thomas Road, his flagship location.

NLO boards sit across from the en-trance from Troy Vending boards at the Hideaway.

“Name another vending company that would be willing to go head-to-head in one location with a larger vendor,” Zies said.

Since bringing NLO to the Valley, some have criticized Zies for not be-ing NDA sanctioned, and not being able to service his machines promptly.

“All of that is unfounded,” he said, “we’re working on the NDA saction-ing, and the beginning players we’re working with now don’t need sanc-tioning until September. Also, I’ve got brand new machines, they don’t need service…and if they did, I’d be right out there. Arachnid sent me to school to learn how to build one of these dart boards, I’m on call anytime to come fix them.”

NLO has two leagues for players with a 2.0 rating or lower. They’re on Tuesday and Wednesday at The Hide-away. There is a 4.0-5.0 and under league on Sunday and Monday. All leagues are two man teams, and are short sets—4 games 501, and 4 games Cricket.

“I am out every league night to help beginners with things like strategy and rules. I want new people to enjoy this game. I want to make darts fun again,” Zies said.

“Competition is good for darts in the valley, and I started this because I’m a dart player and I want to make darts better,” he said.

More Top Hits for 9-Ball at Stinger’sApril 17 marked another strong tournament show-ing at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill. 15 players entered the $5 tournament to try to claim the 9-ball championship.

The winner, Ken Gouso walked away with $140 without losing a game. Coming in second, Ricky Tyrell just missed the win, losing only to Gouso, and leaving with $70 in tour-nament winnings.

Todd Rowitz rounded out the top three, after battling through the loser’s bracket to take home $40.

The tournament was standard 9-ball, with a one-and-two under handicap set.

Tournament Director Jimmy Brewer said all of the players were putting on some of the best pool he’d seen.

“I played, but I always get knocked out early. These guys are really good,” he said.

Stinger’s holds tournaments weekly on Tuesdays, and is at 10040 N. 43rd Ave. Make sure to check out their new “Dart Room.”

Skip & Jan’s Scotch Split

A field of seventeen Scotch Doubles teams came to Skip & Jan’s on April 14th to do battle for over $1,400 in prize money at the April Scotch Doubles event.

The hot seat match found Ricky and Joe going against Eric and Dave for the hot seat. After a hard fought match, Eric and Davis came away with the hot seat.

After coming through the left side, Robert and Cee laid claim to 3rd place and took home $ 120.

The finals were a rematch of Joe and Ricky against Eric and Davis. Joe and Ricky would have to beat Eric and Davis twice to win the event and they got off to a good start with a win in the first set of the finals.

The teams then got together and considering the lateness of the hour, decided to split with each team receiving $570.

As always, Natalie and her staff provided a great venue, great food and excel-lent service.

Chris & Mark win Kitty’s 12 & Under

Eighteen 12 & under Scotch Doubles teams came to Kitty’s on April 21st to take their shot at over $1,200 in prize money.

The hot-seat match found Steve and Dan going against Mark and Chris. After a hard fought match, Mark and Chris won the hot seat.

Coming through the loser’s side, Travis and Guy won 3rd place and took home $ 160 for their efforts.

After a grueling day, the final was a rematch between Steve and Dave vs Mark and Chris.

After losing the first set of the finals, Mark and Chris regrouped and came back to win the tournament.

For their efforts, Steve and Dave won 2nd place and $ 365. Chris and Mark claimed a 1st place prize of $ 650.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

James Lewis wins Kitty’s 7’s & Under

James Lewis held off Tom Leutz to win the April 7’s & Under and Kittys on April 7th.

Lewis looked unstoppable early in the event and captured the hot-seat with a strong 7-1 win over Tom ‘Tommy Gun’ Leutz.

On the one loss side, Travis Jackson was mowing down opponents after a first round loss to Don Stillings. Jackson’s run through the one loss side would be brought to a halt by Leutz though as Leutz scored a 7-2 win to earn another shot at Lewis in the finals.

Tom came out strong in the first set of the finals and held an early 2-0 lead. Lewis fought back to tie the score at 2-2, only to see Leutz regain the lead at 3-2. That would be Leutz’s final game won as Lewis shifted into overdrive and won the next five games to earn a 7-3 win.

A total of almost forty players took the opportu-nity to get ready for May’s BCA Nationals in Ve-gas with the BCA Warm Up tournament on April 21st at Stingers in Phoenix. The format was the same as the players will face in Vegas and as usual, Arizona players proved that they are quite competitive at the game of bar-table 8-ball.

The ladies event featured one player (Sophia Morquecho) playing as an advanced player and all others playing as open players. This meant that Sophia raced to five instead of four.

Even with that spot, Morquecho faced Lori Kinny for the hot-seat. That match would go to Kinny with a 4-3 scoreline.

On the one loss side, Morquecho dropped a hill-hill contest to Jaye Succo and had to settle for 3rd place.

The finals couldn’t have been any closer with neither player able to build any kind of momen-tum. The match came down to hill-hill before Kinny pocketed the final 8-ball for the 4-3 win and first place.

After his win earlier this month at the DCT stop, John Smith was the man to beat in the men’s division, and he lived up to that billing. Smith scored wins over Burt Balancad, Chuck Evans, Jose Gonzalez and Brett Huth on his way to the hot-seat match with Jeff Hagan. Hagan did not have an easy path either, with wins over Marvin Valdez, Mike Sandoval, Rob Turner and Tyson Cole.

The hot-seat match was a close one, with Smith scoring the hill-hill win for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Jerry Stuckart had caught a gear and was mowing down opponents. After a winners side loss to Huth, Stuckart eliminated Balancad, Gonazalez, Cole and Huth on the one loss side.

Hagan would soon find himself on the wrong side of a match with Stuckart as Jerry broke open a close match at 3-3 to score a 5-3 win.

Fans in attendance already knew how dominating John Smith could be on the bar-table, and he put on another clinic in 8-ball strategy in the final match against Stuckart. John played as a master player which meant he was racing to seven while Stuckart only went to five. The two game handicap turned out to just be a bigger chance for Smith to shine.

Smith had won four games before Stuck-art got on the board and that game would be Stuckart’s only win as Smith closed out the match with a 7-1 victory and his second major bar table win of the month.

Stinger’s Sports Bar along with AZPoolScene.com joined together to start up the ever popular Marathon Tournament Series that Alexander’s Bar (RIP) use to run in previous years. The first installment was barbox 9-ball on the 12 Diamond Smart Tables from Stinger’s. 32 players were invited for the event and the field was filled with many top bar table players in the State.

The top rated players included names such as Mike Williams, Mike Sandoval, Ben Hrabina, Brett Huth and Nick De Leon, although none of these 9 rated players were able to crack the top 4. Thirteen 8 rated players joined the field along with numerous lower rated players that jumped up to challenge themselves in this race to Full Handicap Tournament.

The Marathon Tournament was run in a way that any player would only have to play 1 tourna-ment match per week, after the BCA Champions League concluded each Wednesday Night at Stingers. Many players played in different pool leagues and would venture over for their one match that week. The first night of play was February 1st, 2012 with half of the first round playing. With numerous lower rated players upsetting higher ranked players. Alex Aroz knocked off Ben Hrabina, Rico Gonzalez beat Bernie Store and Hopell Ampongan beat Nick De Leon. Two more of the 9’s failed to get out of the 1st round the 2nd week of play with Jason Polk beating Mike Sandoval and Ray Shobe beating Brett Huth.

After a few more weeks (rounds), Jerry Stuckart advanced to the final 4 of the winners with an 8-4 victory over Carlos Avalos, Ken Gouso advanced with an 8-3 over Hopell, Jason Polk 8-5 over Mike Williams and Ray Shobe 8-3 over Burt

Balancad. On the 1 loss side, players were fighting and were waiting for people to come on over from the winners side. Ben was able to beat Hopell, Carlos knocked off Chad Barber, Burt won a hill-hill battle with Mike Sandoval, and Mike Williams bested Brian Poore.

Ken Gouso and Ray Shobe both advanced to the Hot-Seat Match with wins of 8-3 and 8-4 respec-tively over Jerry and Jason Polk. On the other side, Carlos beat Ben 8-7 to advance to play Jason, and Mike Williams beat Burt hill-hill to advance to play Jerry. Ben and Burt each finished in 7th/8th and cashed with $75 each. Carlos bested Jason Polk hill-hill and Jerry blew by Mike Williams 8-2 to make up the top 4. Jason and Mike both took home $120 for their efforts.

The final 4 pitted foes that are all too familiar with each others’ games. Jerry once again defeated Carlos by the identical 8-4 score as on the winners’ side many weeks earlier. And Teammates Ken and Ray battled for the Hot Seat with Ray coming away victor by the 8-3 score. Carlos finished in 4th place and $260. Ken then beat Jerry for the 2nd time in the same tournament by the score of 8-5 to get his 2nd shot at Ray in the finals! Jerry took home $420 for 3rd place.

In the finals, Ray jumped out early at 5-3 like he did in every match of the tournament, but with a couple care-less errors Ken got the door opened that he needed and the two battled to a hill-hill match in the first set of the finals with Ken Breaking. But Ken got a cold roll on the break when the cue ball was kicked into the pocket and giving Ray a routine out for the 1st place victory!

Ken took home $630 for his 2nd place finish and Ray took home a cool $1000 for 1st.

I want to thank Dale at Stinger’s for his generous $500 added to the event and also working a $10 greens fee for the entire tournament for the play-ers. Players were treated to an open table each and every night that they had a match for the original $10 at the start of the tournament.

The next installment of the Marathon Tourna-ment will kick off in June with Bar Table 10-ball and once again be limited to 9 & Under players. Invitations will be sent out in early June and then extended to others as spots become available. Stinger’s has expanded to include 12 Diamond Bar Boxes and now 2 brand new Diamond 9’ tables. The 3rd Installment of the Marathon will kick off in the Winter and will be an 8-ball event with 64 players running up until the BCAPL in Las Vegas next Summer at the Rio.

Ellerman Undefeated for One Pocket WinMitch Ellerman showed that he plays the “non rotation” games pretty well too, with an undefeated run through the fi eld at Bullshooter’s One Pocket Madness event on April 21st.

The fi eld included the usual assortment of one pocket talent, in-cluding such notables as Bernie Pettipiece, Preacher Ronn, “Fast” Lenny Marshall, Tres Kane, Gus Briseno and Bobby Emmons.

The fi nal two shooters on the winners side were Ellerman (with wins over Marshall, Briseno and Preacher Ronn) and Kevin Arco (who had wins over Eric Young and Mike Pankoff). Soon enough, Arco was sent to the left side of the board and Ellerman sat in the hot-seat.

Meanwhile, Mike Pankoff was scoring a 2-1 win to eliminate Preacher Ronn in 4th place.

Pankoff faced off against Arco on the one loss side and had problems fi nishing in the fi rst game of the match. Pankoff missed multiple chances to win the game and Arco took a 1-0 lead. Pankoff regrouped and sent Arco home in third place 2-1.

The extended fi nal set was a close one as Ellerman and Pankoff took turns controlling racks for a 1-1 tie. Two close games later, they were tied at 2-2 and playing one game for the win. This fi nal game saw Ellerman take control of the table early and coast to the 3-2 win for fi rst place.

Brett Huth Wins at Kolby’sBrett Huth has been mak-ing a habit of scoring third and fourth place fi nishes at recent events and that was a habit that had to be getting the better of him.

He put all of that hehind him with a win at Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket event on April 28th at Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe.

The hot-seat came down to Huth and last month’s winner Bernie Pettipiece, with Bernie having to make 9 balls before Brett pocketed 7. That match went to Pettipiece 2-0 and Brett took the trip to the one loss side.

On the left side of the board, Huth faced Mike Pankoff. Pankoff had dropped a match to Pettipiece on the winners side and was looking for a chance to redeem himself against Pettipiece in the fi nals.

The match between Huth and Pankoff was close with the players tied at 1-1. A loss in this match would have left Huth with yet another third place fi nish, but that was a pill that Brett was not willing to swallow on this day. Huth won the next game for the 2-1 win and got ready to face Pettipiece in the fi nals.

The win over Pankoff (and the knowledge that he would not be fi nishing in third place) seemed to be the spark that Huth needed as he won a long safety battle in the fi rst game against Pettipiece for a 1-0 lead and never looked back.

Two games later, it was Huth scoring the 3-0 win over Pettipiece and celebrat-ing fi rst place.

Huth collected $180 for fi rst place, while Pettipiece settled for $100 in second place prize money.

Preacher Ronn’s May One Pocket Event will be on May 26th at Kolbys.
