Beverley talks about Kisharon Day School

l This week Kisharon heard good news.

l The government is happy with the teaching and Jewishethos at Kisharon Day School.

l The government wants Kisharon to be able to help morechildren and will help us build a new school to do so.

l The government has said we can become a free school.

l Everyone at Kisharon is very happy and we are workingwith the government to see that this can happen.

l Volunteer Ari Blum learns with three men supported

by Kisharon.

l He teaches Halachos to Eli Cohen and Meir

Halpern at their home in The Drive on Monday

afternoons.

l He goes there in the evenings too. This time he

learns Mishnayos with Chaim Dovid Rotenberg.

l Chaim Dovid is studying Mesechtes Brachos for his

mother’s yahrzeit.

l Ari said: “I enjoy learning with the men.”

l Kisharon staff can now have therapy.

l Emily Snell is an art therapist. She works with people

supported by Kisharon.

l She is working with staff at Hackney Day Services.

l “Kisharon staff work hard. Art can be relaxing,” said

Aviva Braunold, Manager of Kisharon Adult Day

A free schoolfor Kisharonl Prime Minister David Cameron said that Kisharon

Day School can become a free school.

l Everyone is very pleased.

l This means that the government will further helpto run the school.

l Kisharon wants to be sure all pupils are helped toget the best start in life.

l A new, modern school building is needed.Becoming a free school will help.

l The good work that goes on at Kisharon DaySchool convinced the government to make it afree school.

l Also, local Rabbis, Barnet council, teachers, staffand parents helped.

l More children will be able to go to Kisharon DaySchool in the future.

l But there is a lot of work to do to make this allhappen.

Take part in Nightrider 100km

l Good cyclists can raise money for Kisharon.

l They raise money by taking part in Nightrider

100km.

l In Nightrider 100km, cyclists pedal all night in

central London.

l They will pass interesting sights along the route.

l Sponsors will give money to the cyclists for taking

part.

l The cyclists will give this money to Kisharon.

l Nightrider 100km takes place on 6/7 June this year.

l This week (Friday 13 March) is the start of JewishLegacy Shabbos.

l Newspapers, information leaflets and even rabbiswill tell everyone about legacies.

l When someone dies, they write in a will who will gettheir money and possessions.

l Kisharon and other Jewish charities need legacies,which is money left to them in a will.

l Legacies are a very important source of income.

l This Shabbos was chosen because the Torahreading is Vayakhel Pekudei.

l The Jewish people brought gold, silver, copper,wool, linen, wood and much more to build theMishkan.

l They gave so much that Moses had to tell them tostop.

Cards designedby children

l Do you know any children who are good at

art?

l Could they design a greetings card for Rosh

Hashanah?

l The Kisharon Print Shop will print the cards

with the best designs.

l These cards will be sold in shops before Rosh

Hashanah.

l The lucky artist will get a £100 voucher to

spend at the Print Shop.

l The competition will start in Jewish primary

schools this summer.

l More information about this

exciting competition will be

available soon.

l Kisharon and Barnet Mencap got together to

help anyone who needed advice and

information.

l Two free drop-in sessions were run at the Asher

Loftus Business Centre in Hendon.

l People asked questions about housing, benefits,

money and staying safe.

l The sessions were held on two Tuesdays earlier this

month.

Free advice for all

l Tickets for concerts can be very expensive.

l But people supported by Kisharon get good

deals.

l Hadassa Kessler, Supported Living Services

Manager, said: “Thank you to event organisers

for always offering Kisharon discounted tickets.

l “This means that people can enjoy live Jewish

music even if they don't have a lot of money.”

l Chometz is made when flour and water are mixedtogether and left for more than 18 minutes.

l The Torah tells us that we must not eat or own anytype of chometz on Pesach.

l We clean all our rooms and cupboards thoroughlyto make sure there are no chometz items, includingcrumbs.

l We must also remove any chometz from our car orany other areas that belongs to us.

l The night before Pesach we perform the ceremonyof Bedikas Chometz – a final search of our housefor chometz.

l All food we eat on Pesach must be approved‘Kosher for Pesach’.

Visit from local MPl Labour member of parliament Diane Abbott

came to see Kisharon@HCC, the new college at

the Brenner Centre in Stamford Hill.

l She is the MP for Hackney North and Stoke

Newington, and the college is in this constituency.

l Ms Abbott had not seen Kisharon’s work at the

Brenner Centre. But she had visited the Brenner

Centre before.

l She met men and women in Kisharon’s adult day

services there.

l Ms Abbott spoke to Gillian Adamson, Curriculum

Manager at Kisharon@HCC and Zeesel Spitzer, a

student.

l She heard how the students were learning to lead

independent lives and saw the classrooms.

l Ms Abbott was very impressed.

Kisharon’s helping handsl Kisharon needs to raise money at Purim. Everyone helps.

l The Print Shop sold Purim cards.

l Ari Kesser played music outside his house. He askedpassers by for money.

l His mum is Hadassa Kessler, Kisharon’s Supported LivingServices Development Manager.

l Even the children at Tuffkid Nursery helped. Theypacked mishloach manot!

l These stunning Purim masks were made by women

supported by Kisharon.

l Illana Ellison, Natasha Gordon and Elianne Vogel

decorated them with glitter, jewels and pipe

cleaners.

l Artistic Kisharon volunteer Irit Levit-Hajioff had the

idea of making masks.

l She volunteers at Kisharon once a week.

Thank you JFSl JFS is giving all the money it collected on Purim to

Kisharon.

l Other schools may donate money to Kisharontoo.

l Beverley Jacobson, Chief Executive and RichardFranklin, Director of Fundraising andCommunications went to six Jewish schools.

l Beverley and Richard told pupils about Kisharon’samazing work.

l They asked the young people to give their Purimcollections to Kisharon.

l Kisharon does not know how much money willcome from JFS. It is being counted.

l Jonathan Miller, Headteacher at JFS said: “Wewere delighted to support Kisharon in theirimportant work.”

l Beverley and Richard also went to HasmoneanBoys’ School, Hasmonean Girls’ School, WolfsonHillel Primary School, Yavneh College andImmanuel College.

Making musicl Moishe Goldblatt played the cello in a concert at the

Barbican.

l He learned to play the cello in the Discovery

programme run by the London Symphony Orchestra.

l This gives adults with learning disabilities the chance to

enjoy music.

l He played a piece written by Zoltan Kodaly, a

Hungarian composer.
