    Faith Community Welcomes You

    TODAYS GOSPELLuke 4:7-8

Then he took him and showed him all

the kingdoms of the world in an in-

stant. The devil said to him, All thiswill be yours if you worship me.

Jesus said to him in reply,

It is written: you shall worship the

Lord, your God, and him alone shall

    you serve.

St. Francis heard the Lord speak to him, saying: Go and rebuild my Church.

    FR. ADRIANS CORNER...

Im sure like me you were taken by surprise by Pope Bene-dicts decision to resign from his ministry as Bishop of Romeand Universal Pastor of the Church last week. He is 86 andnot in great health. He has courageously and prayerfullydecided that it is me to hand over to someone younger. Iadmire him for this and for opening the way for future popesto do the same. This week as a tribute to the Holy Father I

just wanted to quote from two speeches he gave recently. The first quote is from remarks to the faithful at his generalaudience in Rome last Wednesday, and the second from arecent encounter with men and women his own age whomhe visited in Rome. I believe youll hear the voice of a kindand loving pastor and the gentle encouragement of a genu-inely holy man:

As you know, I have decided thank you for your kindness to renounce the ministry which the Lord entrusted to me on19 April 2005. I have done this in full freedom for the good ofthe Church, aer much prayer and having examined my con-science before God, knowing full well the seriousness of this

act, but also realizing that I am no longer able to carry outthe Petrine ministry with the strength which it demands. I amstrengthened and reassured by the certainty that the Churchis Christs, who will never leave her without His guidance andcare. I thank all of you for the love and for the prayers withwhich you have accompanied me. Thank you; in these dayswhich have not been easy for me, I have felt almost physicallythe power of prayer your prayers which the love of theChurch has given me. Connue to pray for me, for the Churchand for the future Pope. The Lord will guide us.

Dear elderly brothers and sisters, the days somemesseem long and empty, with difficules, few engagements andfew meengs; never feel down at heart: you are a wealth forsociety, even in suffering and sickness. And this phase of lifeis also a gi for deepening the relaonship with God.... Donot forget that one of the valuable resources you possess isthe essenal one of prayer: become interceders with God,praying with faith and with constancy. Pray for the Church, and pray for me, for the needs of the world, for the poor, sothat there may be no more violence in the world. The prayersof the elderly can protect the world, helping it, perhaps moreeffecvely than collecve anxiety. Today I would like to en-trust to your prayers the good of the Church and peace in theworld. The Pope loves you and relies on all of you! May you

feel beloved by God and know how to bring a ray of Godslove to this society of ours, oen so individualisc and so effi-ciency-oriented. And God will always be with you and with allthose who support you with their affecon and their help.

Let us keep the Holy Father in our prayers these days andalso the Church, that the Holy Spirit may guide us to re-newed vigor in the service of the Gospel.

    Fr. Adrian

    CATECHETICAL MINUTEA Model for Ministry

    By Bill Bischoff

This last week Pope Benedict announced his steppingdown from the office of the Bishop of Rome, the PetrineMinistry. In this acon we have been given an insight into arelaonal model of ministry. Pope Benedicts reason for

stepping down is that he is no longer strong enough to fulfillthe dues and obligaons of the office and in that affecngthe Church itself. Simply put his age and health are affecnghis relaonship with the greater Church.

Ministry is rooted in relaonship, first the sacramentalrelaonship begun in Bapsm and sealed in Confirmaonwith the person of Jesus Christ. Secondly from this sacra-mentalrelaonship we are called to a ministry of service inmarriage, a vowed or ordained life, or the single life. Fromthe grace given in living out these relaonships we discernhow we are called in a ministry of service to the Church.

Some are called to be of ministry as Ecclesial Lay Ministers

working for the church, in parish life; extra-ordinary Eucha-risc ministers to the sick, liturgical ministers etc. We alsoare called to a ministry of example in how we live in rela-onship to world around us. Pope Benedict has given thewitness of this by his acons of last week.

The other element of this tells us no one person owns, oris a ministry, by themselves or unto themselves. Relaon-ship and ministry only take place in community. If we losethat link we are not truly in ministry but in an unhealthyunderstanding of Church and Sacrament.

We are called to ministry and there comes a me in thatrelaonship those things will change out of necessity. As the

Church itself is changing new models of ministry are emerg-ing and we must be open to them. It calls all of us to takeme to discern where we are in our current relaonship toMinistry.

As we enter the season of Lent we are given opportuniesto reflect on this. Bishop Michael Lenihans O.F.M. ParishRetreat gives us the opportunity for such. It is an opportuni-ty we all should take advantage of.

It is obvious that Pope Benedict will sll be of ser-vice to the Church in his new relaonship to ministry. Ourhope might be that he will have the me to write for us the

journey of faith that brought him to this moment.
