    A FRANCISCAN VIEW OF STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship starts with a belief.the belief thateverything we have is a gift from God. Ourlives. Our families. Our talents. Our treasure(money). They are all gifts from God.

It is the realization that even those things that wethink of as having done ourselves are really based

on gifts. They are based on talents given to us byGod or a work ethic passed on to us from our fam-ily. We came by them through an education en-couraged by a teacher or because by the luck of thedraw, we ended up in a family that valued educa-tion, and perhaps, had the means to help us outwith college expenses or a car to get there.

Seeing life as a gift makes people generous. Gen-erous with their time, talent and treasure. We allknow these people. They volunteer for the toughtasks, not just the easy ones. They take time to lis-

ten. Theyre quick with a compliment. They aregenerous with their money as well as their time. And when it comes to giving to the church, they arelike the widow in the gospel. They give out of theirneed, not just out of their excess.

There is no question about it; our first responsi-bility is to care for our familys needs. Notice I saidneeds not every want! Then the church suggestsa 10% tithe. What that means is that we should de-vote 10% of our income to the needs of others; 5%to our parish to sustain its operation so that we can

have beautiful liturgies, maintain this worshipspace, provide programs for our youth, bring com-munion to the sick and support the 60 ministrieswe have here.

The church recommends we give the other 5% toother organizations that do good. Organizations likethe Womans Resource Center or the Heart Associa-tion or whatever groups speak to our hearts. Now 5% or 10% might seem like a lot, especially ifweve never thought about this before. Some peo-ple might start at 2 or 3% and work their way up

over time. Obviously, if you are experiencing finan-cial hardship right now this doesnt apply to you.The point isnt how much we give. Its that we seelife as a gift. And that we share the gifts we havebeen blessed with including our treasure.

When we pray for these servants of Christ, wealso win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying are further-ing His work. Moreover by praying for vocations we are help-ing our children and our childrens children because we areusing meritorious means of preserving our faith for them.

RECONCILIATION SERVICES AT SAN LUIS REY PARISH

There are two Reconciliation Services in Advent at San LuisParish. Both give the opportunity to go to confession or cele-brate the Sacrament ofReconciliation, to give it its correct ti-tle. All sacraments give grace; that help from God which en-ables us to live the Christian life. Reconciliation is a sacramentof repair and renewal it offers the grace to be sorry for pastwrongs and to strengthen us in our resolve to be more faithful.

All Catholics are encouraged to go to confession/

reconciliation before Christmas. Advent is a period of prepara-tion for the celebration of the birth of Christ, which we call theIncarnation, the feast of Christmas. At Christmas we receiveOur Lord again as if for the first time when he became one ofus in flesh and blood. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is awonderful way to welcome Him. In Advent John the Baptistwill tell us, Prepare the way of the Lord; make his pathsstraight! What better way to prepare and make straightthanby confessing our sins, receiving Gods pardon and renewingour faith in Jesus, born again in our hearts this Christmas.
