MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND

If you have someone in your life who is unable to come to Church and he/she needs communion to be brought home to them, please con-tact the office at 760-757-3250 or

[email protected] to schedule a visit from one of our Sick and Homebound Ministers. If you took the prepara on class with Bill Bis-choff and have not been contacted, please call or contact the parish as soon as possible.

FROM THE PASTOR,

I have to admit, we heard today one of my favorite psalms. “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, til the moon be no more.” Can you imagine a world ruled by “profound peace?” Where everyone knows, loves and adores God? It’s hard to imagine, and yet that is what we are called to build each day-- a world of peace, love and justice. As pastor, I’m privileged to work with and meet a lot of people who are working hard to build that world. Every day with a smile, a word, a humble job well done, they witness to the Light which is Jesus Christ. What I see faith building at Mission San Luis Rey is not just a wonderful list of improvements made this past year (and there were many), but a feeling of tenderness and closeness among the people who share their time and their talents with their God. That’s the profound peace that comes with faith. I wish you and your family a blessed, peaceful and faith filled New Year. Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

WHAT IS A LIVE CHURCH?...

A live church has parking problems; a dying church doesn’t.

A live church has lots of noisy children around; a dying church enjoys quiet and peace.

A live church o en chang-es the way things are done to do things be er; a dying church doesn’t need to change a thing.

A live church dreams greater dreams for God’s Kingdom; a dying church has nightmares.

A live church invites people to risk involvement and new ideas; a dying church plays it safe and never risks anything.

A live church supports world mission, a dying church says: “charity begins at home.”

A live church uses its tradi on and buildings to serve God and people, a dying church uses peo-ple to serve its tradi ons and buildings.

A live church worships; a dying church worries. A live church is filled with thers, a dying church

is filled with ppers. A live church forgives and seeks forgiveness; a

dying church never makes mistakes. A live church looks for challenge and opportuni-

es, a dying church looks out for problems and dangers.

A live church evangelizes; a dying church fossiliz-es.

HEROD AND THE EPIPHANY Why impious Herod, vainly fear That Christ the Savior cometh here? He takes no earthly realms away Who gives the crown that lasts for aye.

THE LIGHT OF FAITH

The first reading today is charged with the glory of the Lord. Everyone who can come to the holy city does come—whole caravans of people of all ages on foot and on dromedaries and camels. This descrip on of an irresis ble lightfilled city prepares us for the story of the magi. They are guid-ed by their own lights—their study of astronomy and astrology—and by the light of a peculiar star. Their study tells them that an unusual event in the heavens is a sign of an extraordinary birth on earth. They mean to find out about this, and they set out with gi s worthy of a king. They are welcomed into an insignificant house in Bethlehem, offer gi s be-fi ng a king, and receive the gi of faith. Paul reinforces the great gi of faith available to the Gen les, whom the magi represent. What they have seen has changed them, just as it changed Paul and all who heeded his proclama on. Like the magi and like Paul, we are invited to receive this life that is filled with the light of faith.

moribunda nunca comete errores.

The Epiphany of the Lord

They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star-gazers, meaning-makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Ma hew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusa-lem, they asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage. Herod was less than delighted, indeed “greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,” at hear-ing of a new king on the block (Ma hew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Mi-cah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So they set out again, with Herod’s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star re-appeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in wor-ship, they offered gi s, and went back home. End of story—as we like to remember it. Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome compe on, even in the form of a child. But God wills all people to know salva on. Je-sus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God-life that is the Father’s gi . The darkness of evil con nues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD REFLEXIONANDO EN LA PALABRA DE DIOS

Lect. 20: Isiah 60:1-6, / Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13 (R/. Cf 11) / Ephesians 3:2—3a, 5-6 / Matthew 2:1-12
