Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekend we find a familiar

parable in the Gospel of Matthew (25:1-13)—the story

of the ten virgins (in some translations, referred to as

‘bridesmaids’). Half of them are ‘wise’—they have pre-

pared for the coming of the Bridegroom. The other fivehave failed to be vigilant and are locked out of the wed-

ding celebration. If we look only to the fate of the five

foolish virgins, Matthew’s appears ominous. There is a

sense of impending doom in the air for those who do

not meet their responsibilities. But what about the

other five virgins—those who remained awake and are

received into God’s Kingdom of life and love?

It’s not at all difficult to draw the appropriate infer-

ence. We, too, need to be prepared, alert and awake

for the coming of the Lord in our lives. That ‘coming’

occurs both in a partial way each and every day of ourlives, and in a most complete way when we meet the

Lord at the end of our lives and at the end of time. But

our preparations should be filled with joy and anticipa-

tion, not with fear and dread. Too often we have been

given false information about God—representations of

God as avenging and punitive— out to get us. But the

image and reality of God shown to us by Jesus is just the

opposite. God is a God of love, of peace, of friendship,

hope, and justice—who comes to us in our daily lives in

a thousand disguises, both attractive and distressing. It

is our job to search for the God who is in our midst—at

least in a partial way—right here and right now. Disci-

pleship, by its nature, requires authentic discipline—a

willingness to ‘show up’ for God with consistent effort

and to trust that God will always show up for us.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta put it this way: "At the end

of our lives, we will not be judged by how many diplo-

mas we have received, how much money we have

made or how many great things we have done. We will

be judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I

was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you

took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread-but hungry for

love. Naked not only for clothing-but naked of humandignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a

room of bricks-but homeless because of rejection. This

is Christ in distressing disguise."

Many thanks to the members of Las Madrinas Altar & Ro-sary Society for their generous contribution toward the pur-

chase of the new statue of St. Francis in the Koi Pond. Con-

gratulations, also, to their newly elected President, MarilynGilliland, and to outgoing President Margaret Hernandez.

Las Madrinas has been an invaluable source of leadership

and support in the Parish for many years. Women interested

Kudos to everyone involved in the extraordinary celebra-

tion of the Dia de los Muertos this past weekend. The al-

tares in front of the Serra Center-- memory and honor of the

families of deceased parishioners. They were lovingly con-

structed by the ministry groups in our Hispanic Community.

Thanks, also, to everyone who helped with the event—from

parking (Knights of Columbus, MOP) to volunteer help at the

Old Mission. What a wonderful celebration of our unity and

faith!

Speaking of the Knights of Columbus, many thanks to the

Knights, their Ladies and—in a special way—the Squires— alltheir hard work on this weekend’s Great Spaghetti Dinner.

Father Adrian was one of the featured chefs, so we know the

food was good! Thanks, also, to the Knights, for their work

on the recent Tootsie Roll Drive to benefit people with intel-

lectual disabilities….

Finally, thanks to the member of our Parish Youth Group

who assisted in the recent Blood Drive here. Next YouthMass: Sunday, November 13, 5pm.

The New Roman MissalThe 3

rdedition of the Roman Missal will come into use on

the First Sunday in Advent 2011. The Missal is the book used

at Mass containing all the prayers said by the priest and con-

gregation, including the Eucharistic Prayers. These used to

be in Latin until 1965 when we got the 2nd

edition of the Mis-

sal in English. This new edition of the Missal contains a fresh

translation from the original Latin into English of all the

prayers we use at Mass. The biggest challenge will be for

the priests who will be praying these prayers aloud on behalf

of the whole assembly. There are some changes to the Glo-

ria, the Creed, and in some other places, but these are not

extensive. You’ll find as you listen to the new translationthat our prayers are more lyrical or poetic than they have

been. I have no doubt that our ears and our heats will adjust

in time, so…”be not afraid!”

On Sunday 13 and Sunday 20 of November we are offering

short workshops (20 minutes) on the Roman Missal in the

McKeon Center after all the English Masses (except the 7:00

am). This will give everyone who wishes an opportunity to

learn more about this new translation and to ask questions.

TOWN HALL Q&A WEEK TWO

This week we have two similar questions to answer. The first

is in the form of a statement---Money is needed first before

any new services or expansion. The parish Finance Council

established a policy several years ago that before any project

was started (especially if money would be borrowed to fund

the project) that at least one half of the funds had to be in

hand. This is a very conservative way to insure that we donot start a project that we cannot finish and that any debt be

at a reasonable level that the parish can handle. The parish

has been debt free since February of 2008. The second ques-

tion deals with whether or not the Bishop has any say in how

we spend our money . On a day to day basis the short answer

is no; however for major building programs (even as small as

our Parking Lot/Sports Court) we must present our plans and

our needs in order to get permission to proceed.

ATTENTION ALL MINISTRY HEADS: Please make plans to

attend our next Quarterly Leadership Meeting. The meeting

is set for Saturday, Nov. 19. We will begin at 9:00am in theparish Chapel and finish by 12noon. Please come and con-tribute to build a stronger Parish!

SICK AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRY: We will meet on

Sat., Nov. 19, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in Rm. #1. Volunteers are

needed to take the Holy Eucharist to those in the hospital. If

you can help, please attend this meeting – training is pro-

vided. Our speaker will be our pastor, Fr. Chuck Talley. For

PRAYER SERVICE, WORKSHOPS, CONCERTS:

Lecture: Nov.15, at 7:00 p.m. “The Life and Writing of PabloTac” in the Lasuen Rm. by Dr. Lisbeth Haas, professor of history at

UC Santa Cruz. Pablo Tac was a Luiseno Indian born at the Missionin 1820. Before age 20 Pablo Tac left for Rome where he hoped tobecome a Luiseno priest and return to the Mission. This is the

third in a series of lectures "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"sponsored by the OMSLR Historic Foundation. The Foundation is

currently carrying on a major campaign to seismic retrofit theMission. There is no charge for this lecture, but any donations are

Composer and liturgical musician Pedro Rubalcava will be pre-senting a bilingual prayer service on Nov 18th at 7:30 pm in the

Old Mission Church. On Sat., Nov 19th, 9:00—12:00 noon, he will

be presenting a bilingual workshop on leading ecumenical prayerin a culturally diverse community and on Saturday at 8pm he willpresent a concert.

Bob Hurd will lead an evening prayer service at the Mission on

Dec 2 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a retreat on Prayer, Spirituality

and the Word, an exploration of Centering Prayer, Lectio Divinaand Liturgy of the Hours on Sat., Dec. 3 from 9:00 am—4:00 pmand a concert at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $15.00. There is no charge

ADULT FAITH FORMATION UPDATES

Lessons of faith – Beginning Nov.8th

, will be

the start of a two week class on the New Trans-

lation of the Roman Missal. With the missal

now available, these classes will be a more in

depth look at the language, prayers and scrip-

tural images and reasons for the translation. If

you attended the previous classes don’t miss this short series!

Beginning the first week of advent will have a three weekclass on the origins and traditions of advent, of Christmastide,

and epiphany. We will begin a series on the Father’s of the

Church in the new year.

Parish weekly bible study – Beginning this week we will

offer the same classes described in the lessons of faith article

on the New Translation of the Roman Missal for two weeks.

With the missal now available, these classes will be a more in

depth look at the language, prayers, and scriptural images

and reasons for the translation. If you attended the previous

classes don’t miss this short series! At the conclusion of the

series on the New Missal we will begin the study of the Gospel

of Mark that will continue into the new year.

Parish Catechesis on the New Translation of the Roman

Missal – on the Sundays of Nov. 13 & 20 there will be a pres-

entation after the English speaking Masses on the New Trans-

lation of the Roman Missal. On Sat., Nov. 19th

, there will be

the same presentation given after the 5pm Mass. All presen-

tations will be in the McKeon Center.

Querida Familia Parroquial,¡Paz y todo bien! Este fin de semana encontramos una pará-

bola familiar en el Evangelio de Mateo (25:1-13) -- el cuento

de las diez vírgenes (en algunas traducciones se refiere a

“damas” de la novia). La mitad de ellas son “sabias”—ellas

se han preparado para la llegada del Novio. Los cinco restan-tes han fallando en ser vigilantes y se han quedado fuera de

la celebración de la boda. Si observamos solamente la suer-

te de las cinco damas que no eran sabias, Mateo da la im-

presión de que no presagiaba nada bueno, tiene un sentido

de fatalidad hacia aquellos que no cumplen con sus respon-

sabilidades. ¿Y qué de las otras cinco vírgenes, aquellas que

permanecieron despiertas y las cuales son recibidas en el

Reino de Dios, de vid y amor?

No es nada de difícil de hacer la inferencia apropiada. Noso-

tros también necesitamos estar preparados, alertas y des-

piertos para la llegada del Señor en nuestras vidas. Esa

“llegada” ocurre en dos formas, en forma parcial todos y

cada uno de los días de nuestras vidas, y de una forma máscompleta, cuando nos encontramos con el Señor al final de

nuestras vidas y al final del tiempo. Pero nuestros preparati-

vos deben de estar llenos de gozo y de anticipación, no con

temor y espanto. Muy a menudo a nosotros se nos ha dado

una información falsa sobre Dios—representaciones de Dios

como negativo y castigador, tratando de alcanzarnos. Pero

la imagen y la realidad de Dios mostrada por Jesús es todo

lo opuesto. Dios es un Dios de amor, de paz, de amistad, de

esperanza y de justicia, que viene a nosotros en nuestra vida

diaria en miles de disfraces, ambos atractivos y angustiosos.

Es nuestro deber buscar por el Dios que está en medio de

nosotros—aún en forma parcial—aquí y ahora mismo. El ser

discípulos, por su naturaleza, requiere disciplina auténtica—

estar dispuestos a “estar presente” para Dios con un esfuer-

zo consistente y confiar en que Dios siempre estará presen-

te para nosotros.

Beata Teresa de Calcuta, lo describe en esta forma: “Al final

de nuestras vidas, seremos juzgados no por los muchos di-

plomas que hayamos recibido, por el mucho dinero que

hayamos logrado o por cuantas cosas grandes que nosotros

hayamos hecho. Nosotros seremos juzgados por “Porque

estuve hambriento y me dieron de comer, sediento y me

dieron de beber, era forastero y me hospedaron, estuve des-

nudo y me vistieron.” Hambrientos, so solo por pan, más

bien hambrientos por amor. Desnudos no solo por falta deropa, sino carentes de dignidad y de respeto humano. Sin un

hogar, no solo por la necesidad de una habitación de ladri-

llo, sino más bien por ser rechazado. Este es Cristo en su

disfraz angustioso.

bién a su Presidenta elegida recientemente, Marilyn Gilli-land, y su Presidenta saliente, Margaret Hernández. Las ma-

drinas han sido una fuente invaluable de liderato y de apoyo

Felicitaciones también a todos los participantes en la celebra-

ción extraodinaria del Día de los Muertos el fin de semana

pasado y los altares frente al Centro Serra—en memoria y

honor de las familias de feligreses fallecidos. Estos fueron

construídos con amor por grupos de ministerios de la Comu-nidad Hispana. Gracias también a todos los que ayudaron en

la preparación del evento desde el estacionamiento

(Caballeros de Colón y MOP) a voluntarios que ayudaron en

la Misión Vieja. ¡Qué celebración maravillosa de nuestra uni-

dad y de nuestra fe! Hablando de Caballeros de Colón, mu-

chas gracias a los Caballeros, a sus Damas y en especial, a losEscuderos, gracias a todos por su trabajo tan duro este fin de

semana de la Cena de Espaguetti. ¡Padre Adrian, fue uno de

los cocineros, por eso sabemos que la cena sería buena! La

actividad de “Tootsie Rolls” se le agradece también a los Ca-

balleros de Colón para beneficio de personas con incapacidad

intelectual.

Finalmente, gracias a los miembros del Grupo ParroquialJuvenil que ayudaron en la Donación de Sangre. La Misa deJóvenes próxima: domingo, 13 de noviembre a las 5pm.

El Nuevo Misal Romano

La tercera edición del Misal Romano entrará en uso el Pri-

mer Domingo de Adviento del 2011. El Misal es el libro que se

utiliza en la Misa que contiene todas las oraciones dichas por el

sacerdote y por la congregación, incluyendo las oraciones de

Eucaristía. Estas acostumbraban ser en Latín hasta el año 1965

cuando obtuvimos la segunda edición del Misal en inglés. Esta

edición nueva del Misal contiene una traducción fresca del

Latín original al inglés de todas las oraciones que utilizamos en

Misa. El reto más grande será para los sacerdotes que orarán

en voz alta a favor de toda la asamblea. Hay algunos cambios al

Gloria, al Credo y en algunas otras partes, pero éstos no son

extensos. Ustedes encontrarán al escuchar la nueva traducción,

que nuestras oraciones son más líricas o poéticas de lo que hansido. Yo no tengo duda que nuestros oídos y nuestros corazo-

nes se modificaran a tiempo, así que… “¡no teman!”

El domingo 13 y el domingo 20 de noviembre nosotros ofre-

ceremos pequeños talleres (20 minutos) del Misal Romano

después de las Misas en inglés en el Centro McKeon. Esto les

dará la oportunidad de aprender sobre esta nueva traducción.

Reunión Informativa Preguntas y RespuestasSemana Dos

Esta semana nosotros tenemos dos preguntas similares

para responder. La primera es en la forma de una declara-

ción--Se necesita el dinero primero antes de cualquier ser-

vicio nuevo o expansión. El Consejo Parroquial de Finanzas,

estableció una norma hace años que antes de que se inicia-

ra cualquier proyecto (especialmente si se tomaría un

préstamo para financiar el proyecto) que por lo menos la

mitad de los fondos tendrían que tenerse a la mano. Esta es

una forma muy conservadora de asegurar que no comence-

mos un proyecto que no podamos terminar y que cualquier

deuda este en un nivel razonable que la parroquia pueda

manejar. La parroquia ha estado libre de deuda desde fe-

brero del 2008. La segunda pregunta va de acuerdo si el

Obispo tiene algo que decir en como gastamos nuestro

dinero. En una base de día a día, una respuesta corta es no;

sin embargo, programas mayores de construcción (aún tan

pequeño como nuestro Estacionamiento/Cancha Deporti-

va) nosotros debemos presentar nuestros planes y nuestrasnecesidades en orden de obtener permiso para proceder.
