Hot on the heels of the release of Lamb’s sixth long player, Backspace Unwind, the legendary Manchester trip-hoppers are heading back to Oz for the first time in five years.

Featuring the ethereal vocals of Lou Rhodes and the prodigious knob twiddling of Andy Barlow, Lamb first formed in Manchester in '95 and first pricked up ears with their genre-bending debut album which delivered intensely personal, emotionally charged songs intertwined with startling drum n bass beats in in a collision of jazz, classical, blues, techno and hip hop that defined an era of trip hop. The singles Gold, God Bless, Cotton Wool and Górecki have been critical and commercial successes. In particular, Górecki - inspired by the works of composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki - has become one of the most recognized anthems of electronic music.

WHAT'S ON The Lazys, unlike their name might

suggest, are all about unpretentious, gritty, big riffing rock and roll, crazy live shows and a work ethic that would put a pack horse to shame,

If you’re not familiar with The Lazys, think unpretentious working class Aussie rock and roll (think the likes of Acca Dacca and the Angels) with more than just a dash of raucus punk rock thrown in for good measure, and that’s exactly what they’ve served up on their latest, albeit a tad tamer than their live show, long player.

While the band have a few releases under their belt, this is their first “international release” and it’s refresh-ing to see that pure, unfiltered rock and roll is still alive in Australia.

Turn it up to eleven and rock the hell out!

While he will be forever known for his turn as the Joker, fair dues need to be paid to the late Heath Ledger’s brilliant performance in this Aussie gem. When Jimmy (Ledger), a small-time wannabe criminal loses $10,000 of dirty money for a notorious mob boss (Bryan Brown), the underworld comes knocking. With no choice but to replace the cash, Jimmy plans a bank robbery. It comes down to one hour, one girl and one crazy idea.

If being at the hands of a merciless Mother Nature floats tour boat then you’ll be in hog heaven with this latest disaster epic. In the span of a single day, Silverton, the unluckiest town on Earth, is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

The formidable canon of one of the golden age of rock and roll’s unsung heroes, Gene Pitney will combine with the goddess of pop, Cher, for a special tributed show at Wangi RSL this week-end.

Gene Pitney was one of the biggest superstars of the 60’s and 70’s achiev-ing over 40 top twenty hits and writing many of the songs for himself and other recording artists. Pitney was deservedly inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of

Fame and performed well into the 1980s to sell out concerts around the world. Thanks to performer Eddie Daniels, all of Pitney’s greatest hits will be recreated as if you were hearing the man himself.

When it comes it pop divas that have stood the test of time, few can hold a candle to Cher. Suzie Lee portrays Cher in the Shoop Shoop Show - Cher and Those 60s Divas.

Catch this special show at Wangi RSL on Saturday, January 24.

Sydney post-hardcore/emo outfit Oslow are making their way to the Hammo next month as part of their East Coast double-header with Brisbanites Seahorse Divorce.

After playing the hardcore scene for several years during high school, the Oslow boys took some time off to re-establish their sound - a sound that was something a little more “them”.

Their music takes elements from the wide spectrum of musical tastes the guys

have - ranging from the heavy, raucous tunes of their youth, to the rhythmic popular music of their peers.

The boys have recently release their debut EP Field which has pricked up quite a few ears, thanks largely to the track Houndstooth which has been getting a decent run on Triple J’s Home and Hosed.

Catch Oslow and Seahorse Divorce alongsiede King Single and Horse Bolted at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Friday, February 6.

In the 70s and 80s, The Cyril B Bunter Band truly were a rite of passage for countless Sydney fans, and signified unabashed good times. Renowned for putting on the best blues and boogie shows in town, The Bunters would pack out venues to the brim before hitting the road on frequent national tours with John Mayall’s Blues Breakers, Canned Heat and good mates George Thorogood

& The Destroyers (which later saw George recording The Bunters Boogie People as the title track to his 1985 album with The Destroyers). Now in the 21st Century, they’ve brought back that Good Boogie .

Catch founding members Gary Lothian (Raggy), Jimmy Bee (Jake) and Rosscoe Clark with new recruit Ali Penney on keyboards at the Caves Beachside Hotel on Friday, January 23.

The Last Hurrah

If you’re planning on catching leather-clad rocker Suzi Quatro on her upcoming umpteenth-dozen tour of Australia, you’d do well to pack a few Kleenex.

After 28 visits Down Under, over a career spanning a ludicrously impressive 51 years, Quatro will be saying goodbye to Australia with a tour that is sure to pull out all the stops.

“You know, I’ve been coming down to see you guys for so long now and because this will be the last Australian tour I wanted to make it really special for you guys,” Quatro told TE down the line from London.

“To celebrate my 50th anniversary, last year I released a really cool box-set with, like 82 tracks - 82 tracks, man! So I’m look-ing forward to sharing that with Australia but, you know it will be kinda bittersweet because I’ve been visiting since the 70s and I’ve basically shared a lifetime with you guys so it should be a little poignant, you know? Poignant but with some really kick ass rock and roll.”

Ever since Quatro saw Elvis Presley’s now legendary turn on the Ed Sullivan show as an impressionable child, she knew that a life lived onstage was one worth chasing.

“I was around six years old and living in Detroit, Michigan,” she said.

“I was in another room and my sister was screaming. I went in to see what she was screaming about and there was Elvis doing his thing on screen.

“First, I was looking at the screen and then I was inside the television. I decided then and there that’s what I wanted to do with my life.”

She certainly hasn’t looked back - not only with music but, successful forays into acting firstly playing Fonzie’s girlfriend Leather Tuscadero in Happy Days before snagging roles in shows like Minder, Absolutely Fabulous, Midsomer Murders and even a turn on the West End as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun. Not to mention her radio career on BBC2 (she was nominated for broadcaster of the year at the Sony Radio Awards in 2006)

After first dipping her toe into musical waters, playing drums for fer father’s jazz outfit The Art Quatro trio, she formed an all-girl outfit, The Pleasure Seekers, later renamed Cradle, with her sister Patti. It was this outfit that caught the attention of iconic British hitmaker/producer Mickie Most (The Animals, Donovan, Lulu, The Jeff Beck Group) who brought Quatro back to London and before too long she started working with the songwriting team of Nicky Chinn and ex-pat Aussie Mike Chapman (Smokey, Racey, Sweet) who gave Quatro her first number one smash Can The Can and a string of hugely successful follow-ups such as Devil Gate Drive, 48 Crash, Daytona Demon and Your Mama Won’t Like Me.

Quatro said having such a formidable team behind her was invaluable in those early years.

“Mickey Most was just such a wonderful

MUSIC

man who really was like a father figure to me - I really did love that man, he really believed in me right from the start and he taught me so much about rock and roll,” she said.

“Working with Chinn and Chapman was just outrageous as well - I mean both of those guys are so darn talented and, even now I still work really closely with Mike Chapman - he’s a really great friend.”

Over the course of her career, Quatro has stood out as one of only a handful of female rock an rollers to make a name for herself. Sure, the likes of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick existed long before Quatro, but they were in a different, blusier ball-park than the pure unadulterated rock and roll of Quatro. Her effortless swagger and thumping bass skills essentially set the template for the female rock star and her influence can be felt in such artists as Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett and the Runaways, and even homegrown heroes like Suzie DeMarchi and Sarah McLeod.

While she may’ve made her bones in the

oft-male dominated dominion of 70s rock and roll, she said she was unaware of any boys club mentality within the industry.

“While I’m sure it was there, none of that stuff really touched me because I grew up in a family of four sisters and my dad brought us all up to be ballsy and not to get pushed around,” she said. “Although, in the beginning I do remember thinking to myself ‘I hope this is successful because this isn’t really what a girl should be doing.”

While Quatro said she was loath to “toot her own horn” she did offer a quote from Mike Chapman about her place in the pop music landscape.

“Yeah I don’t like to toot my own horn about these things but I think Mike Chap-man put it well when he said ‘there are no girls around making music today who don’t owe some debt to Suzi Quatro’. Now I don’t know about all that but it sure sounds nice, doesn’t it?”

Catch Suzi Quatro at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, February 18.

Circus animals’ desertion

Given that the last time Philadelphian post-hardcore/folk-influenced outfit mewithoutYou were in the country for a stripped-back

acoustic set at the 2008 Soundwave, it should come as no surprise that they are champing at the proverbial bit to bring their full compliment Down Under for an eight-date national tour.

“It’s going to be so much fun,” frontman Aaron Weiss told TE

“The last time we were down in Australia was for Soundwave, which was really cool, but it was only a short set and a stripped-back acoustic thing - we didn’t have a drummr and we didn’t have a second guitar, so it’s going to be great to be bring-ing the full show down there.”

TE caught up with Weiss down the line from the library at Temple University in Pennsylvania where he was working on a PhD paper.

“It’s really quite exciting - I’m sitting here now writing the final paper I need to complete my program, but I think that’s kinda the way I am I always need some kind of challenge.”

Speaking of challenges, the band have certainly raised the creative bar with their latest release - Ten Stories.

Moving away a little from the post-hardcore and folk influences that were

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

so prevalent on earlier releases, Brother Sister and It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All A Dream ! It’s Alright!, Ten Stories is an album rife with richly layered production and ethereal harmonies with echoes of the angular noise that was evident in earlier releases.

Lyrically, the album is essentially a concept record based around the story that

Weiss read a a schoolboy, about a travel-ling circus and a train crash it suffered in late 19th Century Montana and Weiss said that forcing himself to write from different perspectives was quite a challenge as well.

“This time around, there really was more of a storytelling approach,” he said.

“The album is kind of about all of the different circus animal’s perspective and I

found the whole exercise of examining the one story via many opposing viewpoints avery challenging yet rewarding one because it opens you up to new ways of thinking.”

“It is a great exercise because you really can create this fable, fantasy world where you can say things that aren’t necessarily your personal beliefs.”

The blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll - so sang Muddy Waters in 1977

It used to be common for hard-rock-ing bands to emerge from the blues scene - everyone from the Stones and Cream to Led Zeppelin cut their teeth on a 12-bar.

Chase the Sun is one Australian band with roots in the blues scene and, since forming in 2007, has been letting an unabashed love of rock and roll fully hang out, infusing their take on the blues with loud guitar, blaz-ing hard funk and a cranking 1970s southern rock feel.

The music of Chase the Sun features the powerhouse delivery of guitarist Jan Rynsaardt and soul-tinged song-writing combined with elements of acoustic blues and Stevie Ray Vaughn boogies. This three-piece cranks out a new and fresh take on a classic sound.

Chase the Sun’s constantly touring road show has had them smash every major Australia blues festival over the past few years, take out top honours in the Australian Blues and Music Oz awards, debut on the US Billboard charts at number 13 and release two albums in Japan.

WES CARRLIZOTTE’SSATURDAY, JANUARY 31

I me mine

From the sparkling indie-rock of Tambalane (featuring Novocastrian and Silver-chair drummer Ben Gillies) to winning season six of

Australian Idol, to his raw, folk-inspired Buffalo Tale project, no one could accuse Wes Carr of pigeonholing himself.

After a 2014 that saw Carr undertake such unlikely projects as touring with celebrity chef Pete Evans as part of his Paleo Way tour, treading the boards in the theatrical production Rolling Thun-der Vietnam and completely shaving his head for the music video for his latest single Anthem, Carr is kicking off 2015 with another out-of-the-square project - a show he has written about one of his personal musical heroes George Harrison.

“The show is, of course a celebration of George’s fantastic music, but also a celebration of his unique philospohies on life,” Carr told TE

“To me, George was a spiritual leader in his own way, as he was a guiding light for so many.”

Carr added the show would also attempt to uncover the essence of Harri-son, as told through the scant interviews he gave throughout his life.

“The thing with George, especially after the Beatles ended, was that he

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

didn’t say all that much but when he did, he said a hell of a lot.”

While Lennon and McCartney are the obvious touchstones when thinking of the Fab Four, there is no denying that Harrison was largely responsible for creating their sonic backbone and visual aesthetic - particularly during the Sgt Pepper days. While Harrison’s contributions the the Beatles are often overshadowed by the famous songarit-ing partnership, Carr said he beleieved George wouldn’t have it any other way.

“George really was the innovator, in my opinion - I mean he was the one that introduces the band to all of the easten philosophies that really changed their whole outlook.

“Also, going back further, listen to a song like Taxman or Tomorrow Never Knows - he was way ahead of his time. I mean, Frank Sinatra said that Something was the best love song ever written.”

“But the great thing about George was that, while he was overshadowed by Paul and John, he didn’t really care - there was no ego with George - he was just always looking for the next chal-lenge and he didn’t really care if it made him three bucks - and that’s definitely how I want to live as an artist.

“It’s about challenging yourself and trying to create somehting that actually says something - unlike most of what you hear on radio these days. - otherwise you’d just get bored.”

With a 2014 that saw them complete three extensive national tours, it’s good to see

Hobart-based four piece Chase City are wasting no time with hitting the ground running this year.

The indie-poppers who are already draw-ing favourable comparisons to the likes of Vampire Weekend and Last Dinosaurs will be kicking off their first East Coast/Tasmanian run of the year, in support of their shimmering new single I Lost Myself.

Upping the ante from their previous release, 2013’s Winter Dawn EP, the single is one hell of a summer ear-worm, complete with biting, angular guitar lines and an impossibly catchy hook.

“Yeah, man, the reaction to the single has been awesome” frontman Tarik Stoneman told TE. “We had been sitting on the release for six or so months so it was great just to

MUSIC

Thrill of the chase

CHASE CITYLASS O’GOWRIEFRIDAY, JANUARY 30

finally get it out there.”The band headed north for a week-long

session with producer Lachlan “Magoo” Goold (Regurgitator, Jungle Giants) at his converted church studio .

“We really wanted to up our game, soundwise from the last EP so we hiot up Magoo and he was keen to work with us,” Stoneman explained.

“We had never met the guy before so it oculd’ve gone either way but, it turned out he was super great to work with and we’ll be doing more stuff with him in the near future.”

Stoneman said the plan now was to plug the single as much as possible before look-ing toward a more substantial release.

“We’ll probably release a few more singles before an album - oh and a heap more touring - you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.”

While it might have been a while since we’ve heard anything from the eclectic,

eccentric powerhouse, Diana Anaid but with a brand spanking new album in the pipeline, it seems all that might be about to change.

The new album, My Queen represents the resumption of a nearly two decade-long career that already includes five ARIA noms and a legion of fans both here and abroad.

With past releases including the number one smash I Go Off, Perfect Family and the US chart-topper Last Thing, Anaid is renowned for her gutsy, in-your-face style of writing, her power-ful live shows and her honest, highly personal and sometimes confrontational

lyrics.With influences ranging from Joni

Mitchell and Janis Joplin to Kurt Cobain and Chris Cornell, and heavily influ-enced by the ‘90’s grunge scene, Anaid’s acoustic based songs have always been recorded with a progressive rock sound, and the new album is no exception. Reminiscent of many strong female artists and yet brimming with individual style, My Queen already has generated quite a bit of industry buzz. With album artwork and a video clip for the lead single Can’t Apologise by Hall Of Fame recipient Nick Egan (The Clash, INXS), this long awaited follow up is sure to create a whole new perception of the diminutive rocker with the impossibly big voice.

Strut on down

Carrington Bowling club is set to explode with the best rhythm and roots the East Coast of Oz has to offer this Australia Day long weekend,

with the return of the annual Coaltown Strutters Ball.

Hot on the heels of the runaway success of last year’s event, that featured the likes of Ian Collard, Chris Wilson, The Cartwheels, The Junes (pictured) and Roy Payne’s Cajun Dance Party, organiser Gleny Rae Virus, whose band The Junes will be making a welcome return, told TE that she was hoping for an even bigger Ball this year. With such acts as The Junes, the laconic Townsvillians The Barramundi Brothers, Woolongong alt. country darlings, Jeremy Edwards and Dust Radio, Canberra blues-meisters The Fuelers, jazz impresario George Washingmachine and honky tonk legends Rob Luckey and the Lucky Bastards, all signs point to yes.

“It really is a celebration of the wealth of rhythm and roots talent we have here on the East Coast and something to counter-act the redneck, bogan celebrations that, sadly, Australia Day seems to becoming known for,” Virus told TE.

There’s not really much happening musically for Australia and the Coaltown Strutters Ball is a great way to celebrate with the whole family in a really fun environment.

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

“We’re quite lucky because we’re able to capitalise on the last week of the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Nundle Festival which is becoming a bit like the Tamworth fringe festival - a lot of the bands are heading back down the coast so we’re able to snap them up on their way home - it’s great.”

Virus’ band, The Junes, also featuring the formidable talents of Suzannah Espie, Sarah Carroll, Dougie Bull and the Badloves’ Chris Tabone, are currently riding high on the back of their swinging 2014 long player Country Con Queso.

Produced by the legendary Jeff Lang at the equally legendary Adelphia Studios in Melbourne - Country Con Queso is an eclectic tapestry of swing, country and bluegrass with stunning three-part harmonies - all put through the sassy self-effacing Junes humour machine.

“Working with Jeff was just great - he’s got such a wealth of experience and he really got the kind of live vibe we wanted to capture with the record. We were also lucky enough to have him weave some of his guitar magic on there, too”

Tickets to the ball are $30/$25 and available via trybooking.com/GPVN. Kids under 16 are free.

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see the show! To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with “Coaltown” in the subject line, by no later then 5pm Friday, January 23.

Winners will be notified by phone.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that’s got the flavour and the ambiance in spades, look no further that the Depot on Darby.

A staple of the Cooks Hill eat scene for a number of years now, the atmosphere at the Depot quintessential Darby Street - trendy yet relaxed. The low-lit restaurant is decked out with funky ply board panelling, wood-grain finishes and floor-to-ceiling by-fold windows that make it a perfect perch for an afternoon of people watching.

On the night of our visit, the place was filled with groups of girls in their 20s downing cocktails and picking at share plates, middle aged couples enjoying a romantic dinner date, and lads sipping lattes at tables by the roadside.

There’s a real “this place is for everyone” vibe going on.

After been shown to our table but the super-attentive waitstaff, we ordered up a couple of starters. My dining partner opted for the garlic-rubbed bruschetta ($11) while I could not go past the arancini ($17).

Not your average tomato and Spanish onion affair, the Depot twist on this Ital-ian classic was served with crisp batons toasted bread, a salty olive tapenade, sweet caramelised onion and capsicum relish and creamy, crumbled binorree goats cheese. The flavours and textures were perfectly balanced here. A simple but well-executed starter.

The arancini, bite-sized morsels of cheesy risotto rice, vine tomato and span-ner crab in a delicate lightly-fried crumb and served with lemon aioli, were well-presented and very moreish.

We barely had time to contemplate our starters when our mains arrived promptly

EAT OUTTHIS WEEKEND

This depot on the right trackAMELIA PARROTT on our table.

While my dining partner went for the crispy skin salmon ($38), served with pea puree, bacon linguini and a light asparagus salad, (she raved about it, saying it was the best she’d ever had) I chose the wagyu rump steak ($42). As expected, it was a truly gorgeous cut of meat, cooked to absolute perfection. Topped with earthy Swiss brown mushrooms and served with aromatic saffron and garlic roast potatoes and steamed greens, this dish was testa-ment to the Depot’s commitment to qual-ity fresh produce. Simple flavours, cooked right - it’s a combination that can’t easily be beat.

If our recent visit is anything to go off, the Depot on Darby should be your go-to destination for dining experience that you’re guaranteed to want to write home about.

Heroes/Bounty HuntersCambridge Hotel, Saturday, January 17

REVIEW

When it comes to discussing the long and involved history of the Newcastle music scene, it would

be a fool’s errand to do so without first mentioning Heroes. Sure, locals like the Screaming Jets and Silverchair may’ve eclipsed the rockers in terms of sales, but there are few bands in this town that enjoy the level of mythologising that these guys do - thanks largely to their starring role in the now infamous Star Hotel riots in 1979.

Now, some 35 years after the release of their first and only album the boys are well and truly back with album number two, So Far, which they launched, to a rapturous reception at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday night.

Opening up proceedings were Port Macquarie three-piece The Bounty Hunters whose tubthumping blues-rock set, well and truly whet the punt-ers’ appetites for what was to come. This was rumbling, rollicking rock and roll with some truly solid riffing from guitarist David Hines. With nods to the likes of Heart, ZZ Top and even the great SRV in his rockier moments, there was plenty to like about the Bounty Hunters.

But, it was the Heroes that the punt-ers came to see and from the moment

that they took to the stage, all sport-ing smiles from ear to ear, there was a sense that there was nowhere else they’d rather be, either. Given that they disbanded after just one album, there was a palpable sense of ‘completing unfinished business’ here and Heroes gave it their all from go to woah.

First of all, the tracks off the new album sounded great. Super tight pop-rock numbers full of a youthful ebul-lience that belies the bands’ age. The thing that really struck this reviewer, however, was the fact that the cuts from the old album sounded as fresh and vibrant as I’m sure they did all those years ago. With a sound that ranges from full on pub rock to more late 70s/early 80s Aussie indie guitar pop a-la the Trilobites or the Sunnyboys, there was very little, if anything to dislike about this set.

Things were kicked up a couple of notches when Newcastle axe slinger Trevor Dare (The Idols, Mirage et al) joined the boys for a couple of songs, and again when two members of the Rehab Brass Band filled out a couple of arrangements with their enormous horns.

There is really no denying after seeing this set that Pete de Jong, Mark Tinson, Phil Screen and Jim Porteus really know how to rock and roll.

Here’s hoping that we don’t have to wait another 35 years for album number three.

With nine Oscar nominations, the fact that Birdman was snubbed for best editing is almost beyond comprehension.

Utilising subtle “smart cuts” Birdman looks as though it is shot as one continuous take and the execution is astounding.

In Birdman, 90s Hollywood Star Riggan Thomas (Michael Keaton), known for playing the iconic Birdman superhero, tries to reinvent himself by writing, directing and starring in a Broad-way adaptation of the Raymond Carver play What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, throwing serious meditations on the nature of celebrity and stardom in the digital age and insular obsessions . Edward Norton plays the “serious” Broadway actor Mike Shiner with fastidious aplomb, Emma Stone is great as Thomas’ recovering drug addict daughter but it is Keaton who truly steals the show here.

While Oscar buzz can normally be taken with a grain of salt, you can believe the hype with this one - although, if you hate endings that are widely open for interpretation, you may be left frustrated.

If you’re one to keep up with all the latest release chatter then you’d know that there’s been a lot of buzz about Disney’s latest offering, Big Hero 6, and I’m happy to say that it’s not unfounded.

Set in the American/Japanese hybrid city of San Fransokyo, the film tells the story of a 14-year-old robotics prodigy, Hiro Hamada who forms a superhero team to take down a masked villain.

This is Disney’s first foray into the animated Marvel universe and even though every Marvel reference went over my head it didn’t effect my enjoyment of the film.

At 108 minutes I thought it ran a little long for a kids’ movie, but it didn’t seem to bother the little faces around me, with plenty of thrilling CGI, karate moves and a lengthy fart joke to keep them glued to screen.

For the adults, the scene where Baymax is running out of battery power is a winner, seeing the robot channel that drunk mate we’ve all had to look after on a messy night out.

All in all, Big Hero 6 is well worth the watch.

The Wild ComfortsLass O’Gowrie Hotel - Sunday, January 18

REVIEW

STEPHEN BISSET

There are few places better than the Lass beer garden to while away a few lazy Sunday afternoon hours and contemplate the week

that will be, over a few refreshing ales. Throw some quality music into the

mix, like the set that was offered by Melbourne-based alt. country outfit The Wild Comforts and you’ve got a pretty cruisy afternoon indeed.

The Wild Comforts are currently prick-ing up quite a few ears thanks to their Bill Chambers-produced long player Silver City Sorrow, and it’s lead single Cosette, featuring Bill’s daughter Kasey. It was this album that made up most of their Lass set.

With frontman Joshua Deeble perched atop a barstool with an acous-

tic on his lap, the band lurched into a set that ranged, almost effortlessly, from delicate, heart rending ballads to more up-tempo country-tinged “danceables”.

While the term country could defi-nitely be applied to these guys, there was barely a hayseed to be found - the Wild Comforts are definitely more in the vein of the barroom caterwauling and tales of down and out desperation from Rich-mond Fontaine’s Willy Vlautin, the stark vulnerability of Jason Isbell or even the stellar songwriting chops of Ryan Adams (all filtered through a uniquely Austral-ian lens), than they are the Williamsons, the Dustys or the Kernaghans .

Like Richmond Fontaine, The Wild Comforts are not afraid to expose the less than sunny side of life - something made a little easier thanks to the subtle fragility displayed by frontman Joshua Deeble.
