Okay, hip-hoppers, if you missed out on nabbing tickets to the upcoming Groovin’ The Moo festival in Maitland, never fear because Aussie hip-hip “super-group” One Day are giving you another chance to check them out at the Metro Theatre.

It’s hard to imagine that the crew comprising Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate, Jackie Onassis and Joyride only released their debut album Mainline last August. They have since enjoyed back-to-back singles added to radio (the Triple J Hottest 100 entrant Love Me Less, Leave Your Windows Open and SDRO) and packed out gigs from Enmore Theatre through to Field Day and Beyond The Valley.

Their rapid rise has only be reinforced by their ever-expanding monthly block party, One Day Sundays. The event is regularly attracting 1500-plus partygoers and has seen them take the events interstate.

If that wasn’t enough, One Day will be joined by Briggs whose Sheplife set has been kicking goals all over the shop and Jayteehazard whose debut EP Cold Blue has put him well and truly on the radar of tastemakers everywhere.

Being of a certain age, I find it quite hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Silverchair released their grunge-soaked debut longplayer, but here we are.

Not having listened to this set in about 15 years, what struck this reviewer was how fresh and vital everything still sounds after all these years - not bad for a band whose members were just 15-years-old when recorded and one that was written off as a mere Nirvana pastiche.

Frogstomp while eventually eclipsed by Daniel Johns and co’s more expansive and adventurous efforts, is an all-killer, no-filler set of Antipodean grunge rock and roll that has seldom been equalled.

The conflict in Vietnam has had plenty of screen time devoted to it but this gritty Mel Gibson film brings something new to the table - a study on how Ameri-ca’s involvement started. Gibson stars as Lt. Colonel Hal Moore the head of the 1/7th Cavalry Regiment of the US 1st Air Cavalry Division, who finds himself in the first phase of American involvement.

Not since 2001: A Space Odyssey has a sci-fi film had such an ambitious scope and, in my opinion this is the best sci-fi flick since the Kubrickian opus. Trying to explain the story adequately in such a short space would be a fool’s errand however, it centres on a dying earth and Matthew MacConaughy, a former NASA pilot, must helm a mission into a rip in the space-time continuum, in search of a planet that can sustain life.

Tasmania’s rusty fork in a puddle folk-punk, cow-punk, beer swilling, shanty singing, flanno-wearing, mohawk-bearing musical peasants - the Dead Maggies - weave songs of tragic tales from Van Diemen’s Land’s dark and turbulent folklore and history - and then set them to fast, upbeat, toe-tapping, foot stomping, wild music that makes you dance, shout and folk till you punk.

Consisting of seasoned performers from rock, punk, folk, classical, metal and thrash, they mix their backgrounds and styles to drive out fast and furious

tales of Tasmania’s dark histories and folklores on traditional instruments, in a rather less traditional way.

It’s all about the juxtaposition of deep and sad lyrics set to energetic and exciting music, an unexpected pairing that captivates people from all walks of life. The audience can be completely absorbed in a dark story, whilst dancing like a maniac to rip-roaring music at the same time.

Catch the Dead Maggies at the Hamil-ton Station Hotel on Wednesday, April 15 alongside the Vanishing Shapes and Spencer Scott.

It’s been 22 years since the Austral-ian band, 1927, burst onto the scene with their debut album, ISH, selling half a million copies in Australia and produc-ing the hit singles That’s When I Think Of You, If I Could, You’ll Never Know and Compulsory Hero.

ISH remains one of the highest selling debut albums ever by an Australian band to this day.

Now the story continues with the release of their new album Generation-I - a beautifully crafted album and

once again showcases the songwriting talents of frontman Erik Weideman and the band with a thoughtful and mature selection of new songs that fans old and new will love.

Fans have recently reacquainted themselves with the band having been special guests on the recent Roxette national tour playing to more than 100,000 people with rave reviews.

Catch 1927 at Caves Beach Hotel on Saturday, May 2. Tickets are $35 and available at the venue.

While the reaction from music criticshas always been lukewarm, Nickelback has managed to make album sales in excess of 50 million

Whenever Nickelback is mentioned in the media you know that the subject of hate is bound to come up.

After all, how can it not? It’s the big musical elephant in the room. There’s no way to ignore it; people hate Nickelback. The irony of it all is that for a band who attracts so much ridicule they sure do sell a hell of a lot of albums, which may be part of the reason why band members, including lead guitar-ist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, don’t let comments from haters get to them.

“I don’t think we’ve ever been striving to be one of the more polarising bands,” he said.

“That’s never been a thing we’ve set our sights on. But it is what it is and you just wear some thick skin and some people are gonna like you and some people aren’t gonna like you and it doesn’t really bother me.”

While the reaction from music critics has always been lukewarm, Nickelback has managed to make album sales in excess of 50 million, earning them the title of one of the most commercially successful Canadian groups in history.

Their most recent album, 2014’s No Fixed Address, saw the band take on a slightly different musical direction, including an unexpected collaboration with American rapper Flo Rida.

“People are thinking we’re stretching our

legs a little more with this album, which I kind of feel we were as well,” he said.

“There’s some avenues we’ve taken on this that we haven’t touched before and I’m pretty happy about that.

“I think it’s one of our better albums that we’ve made so I hope our fans feel the same.”

With this album Ryan feels they’ve managed to find a good balance between giving fans something new, without completely alienating them.

“You don’t want to completely take such a left turn that you’re going to confuse all of your fans,” he laughed, “which some bands have done”.

“But I don’t think we’re confusing anybody.

“We’ve got some hard rock songs on here and we’ve got some melodic things as well and the Flo Rida thing was really an after thought. It happened really organically, nothing was really premeditated at all.”

When it comes to testing out their new material Ryan has a couple of close family members that he trusts to give honest, constructive feedback.

“My wife’s got a really good honest ear about what we do, and my brother as well,” he said.

“So I usually send those guys a copy and go ‘are we on the right track, what do you think?’

“Nine times out of 10 we get pretty decent scores from them but there’s the odd time where they’re like ‘I think you guys are missing the mark here’, but they’ll tell you why.

The hatersdon’t matter

MUSIC

KATE REID

“I like that because with any kind of crea-tive job sometimes you get caught up in your own thing and not see the forest for the trees, so to speak, so it’s nice to have those soundboards for sure.”

As guitarist of the band Ryan is in the perfect position to have all the perks of a rock star life without having to deal with the recognition and media scrutiny that comes with the role of front man.

“Personally I fly under the radar a lot more than [lead vocalist] Chad does,” he said.

“I’m able to play in this band and make this music and be able to tour everywhere and still can kind of go out to a movie or go out shopping or do whatever you’ve gotta do and not get recognised.”

With popularity comes covers and Nickelback is certainly not immune to this phenomenon. The most well known of these would have to be the piano ballad rendition of How You Remind Me by Chad Kroeger’s wife and ex-skater girl Avril Lavigne. When discussing the idea of people taking on the band’s songs, Ryan’s self-deprecating response shows that the Nickelback guys are very much in on the hate joke.

“Ultimately I think it’s very brave of them,” he laughed.

“Cause they’re like ‘listen, here’s my plan to either keep my stardom going or to start my plan, I’m going to do a Nickelback song’.

“’Terrible idea! What are you thinking?! It’s career suicide!’ So if anybody tries it they’re very brave and good on ‘em,” he laughed.

Catch Nickelback at the Newcastle Enter-tainment Centre on Saturday, May 23.

Having to cancel much of his mam-moth Utopia tour, earlier this year due to illness, 360 (aka Matt Colwell is making good on his promise to make up the cancelled shows with the Reto-pia tour that will see the rapper hit the Cambridge later this month.

Following on from 2012’s Falling And Flying, the double-platinum smash album that resulted in Sixty’s mete-oric rise to fame, his latest offering, the bold and passionate Gold-selling Utopia, is the soundscape to a young man’s life who found himself growing up and facing his demons in the public eye.

Speaking to TE earlier this year, he said he and producer Styalz Fuego pulled out all the stops for Utopia.

“With Utopia, I felt like the aim was

to make an album that was the next level in every way, so I guess that pres-sure was more put on by me to create something, I guess, bigger,” he said.

Still riding high on the back of Uto-pia, the rapper is certainly wasting no time in striking while the iron is hot and is currently in the studio, working on new material with Chris Cheney from The Living End so, don’t be sur-prised if you’re treated to some fresh 360 when he hits Newcastle.

Catch 360 at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, April 23.

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to the show. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected], with “360” in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, April 14.

ARTS

A cast of more than 60 of the region’s best young performers from Tantrum Youth ARTS, The

Flipside Project, Catapault Dance Inc and Past Present Future, will take audiences on a journey through time, reaching back into the past as far as the Dreaming and delving into some of Newcastle’s iconic Watt Street and some of its most interest-ing and historical sites.

Inspired by last year’s CONDA award- winning Diving off the Edge of the World, Stores in Our Steps is a walking, theatrical, time-travelling tour of Watt Street that kicks off at the top of James Fletcher Park and winds its way down through the old Industrial Girls School (now James Fletcher Hospital), St Phillips Presbyte-rian Church (now Tantrum), Watt Street Commercial, the Lock Up and Pacific Park.

“Newcastle is a town full of people passionate about history…yet every day, hundreds walk down Watt Street unaware of the stories in their steps,”

project producer Amy Hardingham said.“The project uncovers just some of

those hidden histories and brings them to life in an original and dynamic way.”

The project will also be complimented by an exhibition of archival material, photos and interpretation at Newcastle Regional Library and will form part of the 100 Years of ANZAC celebrations with a WWI-themed dance piece by Catapault Dance and The Flipside Project at Tantrum called Warriors, Rest - named for the inscription at the base of each of the eight WWI memorial plaques on the internal walls of the church.

Stories in Our Steps will be on from April 10-19 and starts at the top of James Fletcher Park, cnr Watt and Ordinance Streets. Audiences are limited to 40 per session and tickets are available via stickytickets.com.au

Jamie Martens is a professional soloist playing all the crowd pleasers from the unforgettable greats to an extensive range of radio hits. Using guitar, vocals and a range of harmonicas, Martens beats out each song with passion and enthusiasm that is second-to-none. From wall to wall crammed pubs to laid back cafe’s and func-tions, Martens has the musical goods Think the likes of Springsteen, Soul Asylum, Pearl Jam, The Eagles and Matchbox 20.

Aside from his extensive experience in on the local covers scene, Martens, last month, made his first foray into solo original waters with his Judgement Day EP.

Martens said that while he had been writing his own material since he started playing the guitar at age 12, he essentially wanted a completely fresh approach for Judgement Day.

“I’ve been writing songs for years, but I didn’t really want to use any of those - I wanted to work with a completely clean slate,” he said.

There’s no denying that Australia has produced some of the finest rock and roll and popu-lar music that has ever been committed to tape. Thankfully, there is one band that is flying the flag for Antipodean awesomeness. That band is Rock Oz.

Featuring the talents of some of the Hunter’s most experienced and respected musos - Grant ‘Goanna’ Meredith (vocals/bass), Robbie ‘Redback’ Brollo (drums/vocals), Paul ‘Joey’ Johns (guitar/vocals) and Donny ‘Dingo’ Soper (guitar/vocals), Rock Oz definitely have the chops to pay adequate homage to some of our best loved homegrown favourites.

Acca Dacca, Chisel, INXS, Hoodoo Gurus, The Sunnyboys, The Angels, Aussie Crawl, The Church and Daddy Cool are just some of the bands that Rock Oz pay tribute to in their tupthumping set. So, if you think the best music can be found in your own backyard, then you’d do well to see Rock Oz in action.

Having plyed his musical trade in such outfits as Rich Kids, Visage, Thin Lizzy and Ultravox and as a successful solo artist in

his own right, Midge Ure is certainly not slowing down.

Following on from the release of his latest studio album Fragile, the Scottish-born songwriter has been travelling the globe, stripping back his formidable catalogue to its bare essentials - voice and acoustic guitar, and the man, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the New Romantics, will be heading to Newcastle next week.

“I was down your way two years ago and I had a great time but it was something like 25 years before that, so I’m doing my best to make up for it,” Ure told TE

“The solo thing is a very interesting proposition for me because most people think that you write all the songs on an acoustic guitar and go from there, but for me, it’s just the opposite - with Ultravox, all of the songs were written with the four of us and with my solo stuff, the studio plays

just as important role in the songwriting process - when I’m finished writing a song it’s completely done so then it’s a matter of me sitting down and stripping it all back. It’s kind of like songwriting in reverse.”

Aside from being considered a major influence on both electro-pop and new romantic scenes with his trademark bombastic guitar lines and sweeping synths that were Ultavox’s bread and butter, Ure was also responsible, along-side Sir Bob Geldof for writing the historic Band Aid single Do They Know Its Christ-mas - a song he also produced.

“To be honest, Bob and I had no idea what that song would become,” he said.

“I remember we [Ultravox] were rehearsing on Top of the Pops which was hosted by Bob’s wife Paula [Yates] and she handed me a phone - it was Bob rant-ing about this footage he had seen on the famine in Ethiopia and he said to me, ‘you need to know about this’”.

“Anyway, because Bob didn’t have a big profile at the time- he felt he couldn’t do it by himself so we wrote the song and decided that we needed to pepper the track with a few of our mates because, if I’m honest, it wasn’t the best song ever

written. But, Bob and I were aiming to raise a couple hundred thousand pounds from the single but it ended up raising millions of pounds [the subsequent USA for Africa and Live Aid concerts raised $150 million (US) worldwide] which is just phenomenal.”

Despite all of the success, Ure is not content to sit on his laurels, with his latest album Fragile setting tongues wagging across the globe.

“It’s been great, the reaction, and I’m really proud of the record,” he said.

“I was quite nervous because it had been 12 years since my last solo record and I had no A & R guy, no manager and not even my wife heard it before it was finished. It may sound a little egotistical, but I really did get a certain sense of self satisfaction out off this record.”

for two special shows at Hope Estate is sure to have sent all you ‘Macheads’ into a lather, if you can’t wait ‘til then, well, you can get along to Edgeworth Sport and Rec Club later this month to catch Running in the Shadows - the Australian Fleetwood Mac Show.

There is no denying that the music of Fleetwood Mac has long been etched into the annals of popular music history - from their formation in the late 1960s right through to today.

Ursula Cain Stewart taking on the role of Stevie Nicks, Running in the Shad-ows offers a seven-piece band, incor-porating some of Sydney’s top session musicians to reproduce the intricate pop and lush vocal harmonies that made Fleetwood Mac such a worldwide phenomenon.

The two-hour show leaves no stone unturned, delving deep into the history of the band, so you can expect to hear all the hits, such as Rhiannon, Little Lies, Gold Dust Woman, Go Your Own Way, Tusk, Second Hand News, Don’t Stop and You Make Loving Fun.

W ith craft beer rapidly overtak-ing the big breweries as the tipple of choice for discerning

beer drinkers, it was only a matter of time before this writer was invited to her first beer-matched degustation dinner.

Lengthy degustation menus with complementary wines are nothing new, but this special event at Central bar and restaurant on King Street, featuring a menu paired with beers brewed by Matilda Bay, the folks behind the popular Fat Yak and Beez Neez brews, was a first for many of those lucky enough to secure a ticket.

A five-course menu was specially created by Central chef Jimmi Hill for the event and paired with Matilda Bay beers under the expert guidance head brewer Scott Vincent, who was also our host for the night, talking us through the selection, from the surprisingly delicate Redback wheat beer to the punchy, Munich-style dark lager that is Dogbolter.

The first pairing to arrive at the table was pan-fried pork sausage on a bed of seeded mustard sauerkraut garnished with a smattering of fine parsnip crisps teamed up with the aforementioned Redback. This traditional German weizen-style beer was a perfect matched to the hearty pork wurst. With its delicate fruity flavours Vincent tips that this one’s also a good match for seafood dishes.

Next was fried chicken. Much more than your average KFC fare, this deli-ciously crispy southern style drumstick really was finger lickin’ good. Served with a side of spicy fried potatoes, driz-zled with sweet tomato relish and paired with a glass of Matilda Bay’s ever-popular Fat Yak, this fresh, hoppy blend cut nicely

through this fry-up. You could easily try this pairing at home for some seriously good match-day munchies and a laid-back Friday night feast.

Our third course was an earthy slow-cooked mushroom risotto with garlic olive oil and baby spinach, topped with shaved parmesan cheese. This rich, mellow dish was finely balanced by the rich, full bodied flavour of Dogbolter.

Then came one of beers traditional part-ners in crime. Burgers. Pulled pork sliders served with another familiar friend, apples, this time in the form of Matilda Bay’s cheekily named Dirty Granny cider. Apple and pork are a perfect pairing. But heads up, the cider goes well with cheese too.

The night was capped off with sweet white chocolate and almond spring rolls dusted in cinnamon sugar and served alongside a glass of Ruby Tuesday amber ale. With its malty toffee flavours, this was the perfect complement to our intensely sweet dessert.

MOVIE REVIEWSShaun the Sheep Movie [Rated G]EVENT CINEMAS, GLENDALEAMELIA PARROTT [2.5/5]

Looking for a fun, engaging and highly endearing flick to keep the kids occupied these school holidays? Home could be just the ticket.

Taking leaves from the books of ET and Lilo and Stitch, the story centres on the lovable alien Oh (voiced by the Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons) a member of the Boov race. Constantly escaping from a more hostile alien species known as the Gorg, the Boov arrive on Earth and go about colonising the planet. After Oh finds himself on the run after

being accused of alerting the hostile Gorg to the Boov’s location and he crosses paths with a plucky 13-year-old girl Tip (Rhianna), one of the few humans to avoid the initial body snatching, who is searching for her abducted mother. It’s part road trip, part coming of age story but with plenty of comedic pratfalls to keep both the littlies and the grown ups interested. While certainly not breaking any new ground, this straightforward flick comes with buckets of heart thanks to a great chemistry between Rhianna and Parsons. If you’ve seen him as Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory, you’d know Parsons knows a bit about comic timing - a skill that is clearly evident again in Home. Comedic legend Steve Martin also pops up as the Boov’s goofy leader Captain Smek.

If you’re looking for some good clean family fun these school holidays, you’d do well to check out the latest feature from the animators behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.

Shaun, the unusually bright young sheep from Mossy Bottom Farm in the English countryside makes the leap from small to silver screen in Shaun the Sheep Movie.

After a prank gone wrong sends Farmer hurtling towards the big city in a runaway caravan, Shaun and the rest of the flock,

along with the farmer’s loyal sheepdog Bitzer, set out on a jour-ney to bring him safely home.

Although some kids might have trouble sitting through this one with almost no dialogue, as an adult I could deal, and kids who are familiar with the TV series will definitely love it. The story is charming and has some fun, unpredictable twists, the level of detail in the stop-motion claymation is astounding and there are plenty of subtle pop culture references to keep mum and dad entertained - see impounded Hannibal-esque kitty.

Despite starting life as a side project from front-man David Bridie and cellist Helen Mountfort’s other outfit Not Drowning

Waving, some 25 years later, My Friend the Chocolate Cake are still going strong and will be heading to Newcastle this weekend to play their self-titled debut record and 1994 follow-up, Brood, in their entirety. .

“We’ve played a couple of these shows in Queensland and, to be honest it’s a little bit scary,” Bridie said.

“There are some songs on those albums that we haven’t played in, like 20 years, but it seems to be working really well. We’ve also got Andrew Carswell [mandolinist and tin whistler who left the band on 2010] back in the fold for these shows so that’s a very exciting proposition as well.”

After playing a handful of shows at the defunct Melbourne venue Madigans, [intended to be the job lot for the band] My Friend the Chocolate Cake decided

to commit what they were producing to tape. The resulting debut LP, a master-fully metered and eclectic set, was recorded in just one day for just $1200.

“There are some quite distinctive Australian sounds on that album,” Bridie said.

“But it was quite surprising how it turned out - given the fact that we weren’t taking things especially seri-ously.

“The follow up, Broods was produced here in Melbourne with Jim Rondinelli who worked on Matthew Sweet’s Girl-friend and we mixed it down in Tom Verlaine’s studio in New York - it’s a much slicker record.”

For the uninitiated, My Friend the Chocolate Cake is suburban folk rock at its finest. Singer/songwriter and pianist David Bridie, alongside the glorious strings of Helen Mountfort’s cello and Hope Csutoros’ violin are high in the curious collision of elements that have made the band a failsafe concert draw, triple ARIA winners and a vivid presence on countless film and TV soundtracks these last two and a half decades. Their seven-album history is a never-mawkish

modern Australia that illustrates its geography, its political mores and its predominantly suburban identity.

So what is it about My Friend the Chocolate Cake that still resonates all these years later?

“I’m not sure that I’m the person to ask a question like that because it’s hard to be analytical when you’re inside it,” he said.

“Although, one thing I think we have in our favour is that our rhythm section are both really good cooks - if I’m ever hungry I’ll just head to their room. I mean, they’re a really, really good rhythm section but they’re also really good cooks.

“They cook onstage as well as off.”Catch My Friend the Chocolate Cake at
