This year’s Sydney Comedy Festival is shaping up to be quite a cracker and the highly-anticipated return of Noel Fielding is definitely a major drawcard.

As one half of the neo-surrealist comedy duo The Mighty Boosh, star of the even more “out there” Luxury Comedy and team captain on the hilarious music quiz, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, you can pretty much expect anything but a normal evening when Noel Fielding comes to town.

Combining Fielding’s unique, stream-of-consciousness brand of stand-up comedy, with live animation and original music, punters can also expect some of his best-loved and most whimsical characters, such as the Moon and Fantasy Man (fingers crossed for an Old Gregg appearance).

If that wasn’t enough, Fielding will also be joined by his younger brother Michael - best known for his hilarious turn as Naboo the Enigma on The Mighty Boosh.

Seminal UK shoe-gaze noise mer-chants, Swervedriver, are back with their first album in 17 years and while there are definite flashes of the raw, an-gular, noise-driven melodies that typi-fied early releases like Raise and Mezcal Head, and the more psych explorations on their 1998 swansong 99th Dream, this time around, it’s a much-more watered-down affair.

That’s not to say it’s a bad record - far from it. I Wasn’t Born to Lose You is a solid set of ridiculously punchy indie rock that is still replete with more layers of guitars than you can poke a stick at and effortless melodies.

If you’re late to the Swervedriver party, definitely check out Mezcal Head before this one, although, it’s a solid release nonetheless.

If you like your dramas gritty, this iconic South Korean flick is a must-watch. While the Spike Lee remake has some good points, this is the real deal. After being kid-napped, Oh Dae-Su spends 15 years locked up in a shabby hotel room, during which time he learns he has been framed for his wife’s murder. Upon his release, he sets out to find who imprisoned him and why.

While not as eventful as the previous two Hunger Games flicks, the first half of the conclusion is carried by a great cast - Jennif-er Lawrence, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ju-lianne Moore, Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci et al. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) is in District 13 after killing the games forever. Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and rouses a nation toward revolution.

“Dr King had this big jovial laugh but it was so seldom heard because he was always in very deep thought”

After a formidable 67-year career, R&B and gospel icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples is showing no signs of slowing down.

Since signing to Brett Gurewitz’s (Bad Religion) eclectic label Anti, the singer, who first found fame as part of the ground-breaking family gospel group The Staples Singers, has released three studio albums, 2007s We’ll Never Turn Back (produced by Ry Cooder), 2010’s You Are Not Alone and 2013s One True Vine, both produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

More recently, Staples teamed up with Tweedy again, working on the release of her father and Staples Singers driving force Pops Staples posthumous 2014 release Don’t Lose This - an album Pops started working on 15 years prior with his daughters Mavis, Cleotha and Yvonne, but became too ill to complete it.

“Working on my father’s LP was a beauti-ful experience,” she told TE.

“What happened was he was making the album but he wasn’t well, so I moved home to take care of him.

“One day he was lying in bed, and he said he wanted to hear some music, so I grabbed this big boom box and carried it upstairs and put on that music that he’d been working on and he looked at me and

he said ‘Mavis, don’t lose this’, and I’ve held onto it for 15 years - it’s been hard to hold it back but I’m so glad that it’s finally out there.”

Staples added that Tweedy, who over-saw production duties on the record as well as filling in some bass and guitar parts (with his son, Spencer, playing drums) was the only person who could tackle the project.

“Tweedy has such a beautiful personal-ity - he just cracks me up,” she enthused.

“He’s also a musical genius who knows the Staples Singers so well - he used to listen to us back when he worked in a record shop - and he knew Pops’ sound so well. Also, the fact that his son plays on the LP is just great - Pops just loved family.”

Starting life as a family gospel group in the 1950s with songs like Uncloudy Day and Will the Circle Be Unbroken, after the group met Dr Martin Luther King (with Pops developing a close friendship with the Civic Rights leader), the Staples Singers moved into more “message-based” soul and R&B music, becoming one of the most pivotal musical voices of the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

“I remember the first day I met Dr King - we were in Montgomery, Alabama and we went along to his church on a Sunday morning,” she said.

“After the service, my sisters and I shook his hand, but Pops stood and talked with him for a while and that night he said to us ‘if Dr King can preach it, we can sing it’.

“Dr King was such a wonderful man - one of my strongest memories of him is his

Staples said they had more than one first-hand account of how dangerous it could be to be such vocal supporters of the Civil Rights movement and Dr King.

“It was definitely dangerous for us - recording all of these songs but it was a dangerous time for all black people in America,” she said.

“I remember one time we were in Memphis and we were gassing up at a station and I was driving. I asked the attendant for a receipt and he was really nasty, so my father went with him inside with the man and I could see him shaking his finger in my Daddy’s face and Pops socked him.

“Pops came out and told me to drive and we get to this bridge that divides up Memphis, Tennessee and west Memphis, Arkansas and all of a sudden there are flashing lights behind us and then police with shotguns and dogs. They hand-cuffed us and put us in their cars, took us to jail and all I could think was that I was going to be lynched and I would never see my mother again. The man said we’d robbed him but we had the receipt so luckily it was all straightened out - but it was the most frightening time of my life.”

So after 67 years in the business, what keeps Mavis Staples so passionate?

“It’s not like work for me at all so, that helps,” she laughed.

“But the Lord gifted me with a voice and I intend to keep using it for as long as I possibly can.”

Staples said that the group’s shift into more mainstream, message-based R&B ruffled more than a few feathers.

“We didn’t see the message songs as being too far from gospel because they were telling the truth, just like gospel music, but we started using a rhythm section - before that it was just our voices and our father’s guitar - and all of a sudden the church people were saying that The Staples Singers are singing the devil’s music and we had to spend a lot of time saying that it was good music and that the devil ain’t got no music.”

When it comes to no-fooling icons in the Oz music indus-try, Glenn Shorrock would have to be

pretty close to the top of the tree.The quintessential voice of the Little

River Band - it’s hard to imagine anyone but him singing such tracks as Cool Change, Help Is On Its Way, Lonesome Loser et al - and responsible for such clas-sics as Arkansas Grass and Little Ray of Sunshine with the 70s supergroup Axiom (also featuring his good mate Brian Cadd), the two-time ARIA Hall of Fame inductee’s (once with LRB and again in his own right) influence on Australian popular music is almost immeasurable.

Now, Shorrock is joining forces with a few other legends - Brian Cadd, Joe Camilleri and Kate Ceberano for the third iteration of the ever popular AIPA Good Times tour.

“It’s always a fun time out when I get to play with Brian - he and I always have a good laugh,” Shorrock told TE.

“These tours have always been very well received and people can expect a show literally packed with hits from Brian, Joe, Kate and I but we’ll also be toying with a few ideas to keep things interesting.”

Shorrock made headlines recently after the US version of LRB (containing no original members, but owning the right to the band’s name) were booked to play on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the band’s 40th anniversary. Shorrock wrote a letter to Jimmy Fallon stating his displeasure, in no uncertain terms, which resulted in LRB being pulled from the show.

“It was a small victory,” Shorrock said.“They’ve been using our reputation

and grinding it into the dirt for years and when I heard they were spruiking this thing on Fallon, I told them - the band not Jimmy Fallon - where to go. I just wanted everyone at the show to be aware of the situation”

While his achievements with LRB are huge - they were one of the first Austral-ian bands to crack the huge US market and managed to snag eight top ten US hits, selling 25 million records - Shorrock remains philosophical on his success.

“I mean, those years were great - seven years and eight top ten hits, riding around in limos and big coaches and you do get buoyed along by that success,’ he said.

“But I think it’s important to keep your feet well and truly on the ground. It’s important not to languish in it but to accept it for what it is while still being accepting of what might come in the future.”

Since forming in mid-2013, Melbourne’s Laura Palmer (featuring members of Outsid-ers, Sommerset and PCP Eagles) has toured extensively around Australia and the United States including recent appearances at Big Pre-Fest in Little Ybor and THE FEST in Gainesville Florida.

The band has played and toured with bands such as Off With Their Heads, Frenzal Rhomb, Paper Arms, The Slow Death, Snuff

and many more. The debut EP arrived in June 2014 and was mixed and mastered by Brian McTernan (Converge, Hot Water Music, Polar Bear Club) at Salad Days in Baltimore.

The release has helped the band gain airplay on national radio and saw them featured as the opening track on one of the 2014 No Idea Records Fest compilations sharing their music to thousands of new fans around the world.

“What I did with this record was kind of an experiment - I’m not sending 30,000 albums to a shipyard waiting to be distributed, I just pressed a button on my laptop.”

While Stockdale said modern technology had ushered in a stark paradigm shift in how labels and artists interact in this day and age, he added that there was still a place for the majors.

“My next door neighbour is a big Wolf-

mother fan and the other day he was asking me what I had been up to. I told him that we had put out a record and he had no idea, and that’s why labels are good because they’ll make sure everyone knows about what you’ve got out there.

“But, it’s just fascinating to me how far it has all come. I mean, ten years ago people were telling us we needed a Myspace page. Where is Myspace now? Also we had dudes back in the day quoting us, like fifty grand to do a webisode clip for our website and now, my daughter, who is nine, uploads cool stop-motion animation vids to YouTube in, like, five minutes. It’s fascinating.”

For Andrew Stockdale, the decision to step back under the Wolfmother moniker, after calling it a day in 2013 and releasing a solo album

Keep Moving, was all about the sense of comfortability with the Aussie rock and roll juggernaut.

“I remember my first gig as Andrew Stock-dale and everything just felt so awkward,” Stockdale told TE.

“My name was up in lights and I don’t know how you feel about having your name in massive lights on a stage but it kind of made me feel like a schoolkid wait-ing outside the principal’s office.

“At the end of the day, I just realised that I want my old job back - I just love playing all of those great Wolfmother songs, so why give all that up?”

Don’t go thinking that this iteration of Wolfmother is pure nostalgia, though. In mid-2014 the rocking three-piece, now unfettered by a major label contract, took the interesting route of releasing their third studio album, the rough, raw and abso-lutely blazing New Crown, on the online music store Bandcamp.

“It’s been a pretty surreal exercise,” he said.

“We were off contract and we had a bunch of songs ready to go, so we thought, ‘why not put it up on Bandcamp’ and the thing gets like 400,000 streams in a week and

H aving only been open for a couple weeks, head chef Justin and the team at the Jack High Brasserie

have certainly hit the ground running. Classic Australian club fare is the order of

the day here and with a constantly evolv-ing and expanding menu, repeat visits are definitely in order.

My dining partner decided on the quin-tessential club dish - the pork roast - and when done well, like this one was, it is an absolute winner.

The succulent and beautifully cooked pork melted in the mouth and the addition of a rich yet not overpowering, gravy and zesty apple sauce took the whole thing to the next level. The obligatory roast vegetables - potato, pumpkin and a healthy portion of cauliflower and greens - were also done to perfection. This was definitely a great example of a club classic and my dining partner, somewhat of a connoisseur of the humble club roast, agreed whole-heartedly.

Not normally the biggest fan of “surf and turf”, I was definitely converted after my 300-gram sirloin with a creamy garlic topper. The steak, cooked beautifully

medium-rare was juicy and full of flavour while the creamy garlic sauce provided a kick of garlic without being too overpow-ering and a healthy portion of perfectly cooked prawns added yet another enticing dimension to the dish. A fresh and zesty side salad and golden brown chips tied the whole thing together making for yet another classic dish done beautifully.

Jack High Brasserie also offers a range of specials - the Monday schnitzel night (members $8.50/non $9.50), Tuesday steak night ($8.00/$9.00), Thursday kids eat free night, and Sunday roast and dessert night ($10/$11) - giving you plenty of delicious options that won’t stretch the budget.

It’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since local country-pop trio, Bella - featuring the formidable vocal talents of Kate Ballantyne, Karen O’Shea and

Lyn Bowtell released their sublime record Gravity as well as picking up two consecutive Golden Guitars for best vocal group.

While they have been on what Bowtell called an indefinite hiatus since the release of the album, the trio are reunit-ing for a special show at West’s Cardiff to celebrate the tenth anniversary milestone.

The trio received a rousing reception, earlier this year when they played two shows at the Tamworth Country Music Festival - a tacit acknowledgement that there is swtill a considerable amount of love around the traps for Bella.

“Yeah, we had a really good time in Tamworth, this year and we figured because it’s been ten years since the Golden Guitars it was a good excuse to get together,” Bowtell told TE.

“We packed out the Longyard hotel which was great and we played to about 7000 people at the Toyota concert in the Park which was just crazy.”

Bowtell, who definitely has extra reason to celebrate with her sophomore album Heart of Sorrow taking out a Golden Guitar for best alternative coun-try album at this year’s festival, said that when it comes to Bella, she doesn’t need much of an excuse.

“The time I get to spend onstage with those girls just goes so fast,” she said.

“I absolutely love what I’m doing now, touring solo, but it is just such a joy to be able to share that moment on stage with Kate and Karen.”

If you’ve ever heard Bella in action, you’d know that while each member is a formidable vocalist in their own right, when their voices intertwine, they create a resonance that is rarely equalled.

“I don’t know what it is,” Bowtell said.“Maybe it’s an intuitiveness that’s

built up over the years, but it’s some-thing that even astounds me - hearing the three voices become one.”

The upcoming show will feature the trio sining Gravity in its entirety as

well as some unreleased material. So, is there any hope of the trio heading back into the studio any time soon?

“We have talked about it - we’ve got the songs, it’s just a matter of making it all work,” Bowtell said.

“Kate’s a teacher now and Karen does

lots of shows around the area and is also a full-time mum and I’m the only one still crazy enough to be out there touring. Never say never, though. It’s definitely on the bucket list.”

There is no denying that the term “Americana” is one that gets bandied about quite a bit these days - especially when referring to artists like Pokey

LaFarge. His music draws on a deep well of American music traditions, incorporat-ing elements of early western swing, jazz, ragtime and country blues however, he sees this label as a tad disingenuous.

“It’s such a broad term, these days,” LaFarge told TE.

“The word Americana started coming up when I was in high school - referring to a lot of that singer-songwriter country rock stuff like Uncle Tupelo, but these days, it’s so broad that Mumford and Sons - a band from England - get called Americana.

“I prefer to think of my music as Ameri-can.”

After a whirlwind tour of Oz last year, which included much-lauded slots at the Port Fairy Folk Music Festival and WOMADelaide, the St Louis-based multi-instrumentalist will be making a

welcome return to our shores for a slot at the Byron Bay Bluesfest and a string of headlining East Coast dates including a stop-off in Newcastle next weekend.

“Yeah, we had a really successful debut run to Australia and New Zealand and played some great festivals and it’s going to be great to be able to visit some new places on this upcoming tour.”

After releasing two solo albums - Marmalade and Beat Move and Shake in 2006 and 2008 respectively, LaFarge’s first foray with a band - The South City Three - netted him an Independent Music award for best Americana album for the 2010 Riverboat Soul set - a feat they reprised with the 2011 follow-up Middle of Everywhere. After striking up a relation-ship with Jack White and his label Third Man Records, Pokey LaFarge - now the name of the band - released the critically-acclaimed self-titled set in 2013.

On the cusp of the Australian tour, and with a newly inked deal with Rounder records, LaFarge has just released his sixth studio album Something In The Water - a set he described as his most experimental yet.

this record was definitely a lot more experimental to what I have done previ-ously,” he said.

“For example, on this record, we have drums on every song, which I’ve never done before and had introduced a strong groove element into the sound, and we’re using a lot of three and four-part harmo-

nies, which is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but just didn’t have the right people, I guess, and a lot more instrumentation.

“I just can’t wait to get out on the road to pay these new songs live.”

Since their inception in 1997, Atlanta-born metalcore outfit Norma Jean have continually pushed the boundaries of hardcore

With Paul Kelly’s Merri Soul Sessions tour receiving rapturous ovations all around the country, and

with new dates cropping up left, right and centre, his turn at the Civic Theatre tonight (Wednesday) could very well be one of the gigs of the year.

These shows present a rare and unique live experience as ten musicians and performers unite together to present an electrifying soul revue featuring songs from Kelly’s highly-acclaimed twentieth album Paul Kelly Presents The Merri Soul Sessions along with a dose of Paul Kelly hits.

The Merri Soul Sessions tour sees Kelly perform alongside fellow artists and close friends on lead vocals - including Dan Sultan, Clairy Browne, Newcastle’s own Kira Puru, Vika Bull and Linda Bull as well as Paul’s long-serving touring band - Peter Luscombe on drums and percussion, Bill McDonald on bass, Ash Naylor on guitar and Cam Bruce on piano and organ.

The Merri Soul Sessions concerts have delighted music lovers around the country. Each night, thus far, has closed with a standing ovation, proving these shows are one of the most vibrant and memorable concert experiences enjoyed this year.

This live action version of Disney’s animated classic is sure to have little ones spellbound.

The story is all too familiar, Cinderella is forced into a life of servitude by her wicked stepmother, only to find salvation through a chance encounter with a charming prince.

Lily James is breath-takingly beautiful in the title role, Aussie

heavyweight Cate Blanchett lends some serious acting prowess to the role of Stepmother, Helena Bonham Carter adds her signature sass to roughen the edges of the Fairy Godmother character and there’s even a surprising appearance from Rob Brydon as a portrait artist.

Director Kenneth Branagh, with his background in Shakespeare, brings plenty of period elegance to this retelling.

Downton Abbey fans will also find familiar faces and a lot of enjoyment here.

It’s rude, crude, predictable, and in parts downright silly, but there are a few chuckles in this latest Will Ferrell vehicle - if you know what you’re getting yourself in for.

This time around, Ferrell is playing self-centred millionaire finance industry hot-shot James King who finds himself nabbed for fraud and facing a stretch in the big house. King enlists the services of Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) to give him the lowdown on how to survive his ten-year stretch in a maximum security prison. The joke here being that Darnell has never spent a day behind bars but is rather a hardworking small business owner.

While there are some genu-inely funny moments here - many of the jokes are way too telegraphed and at times bordering on the downright racist and homophobic (sure, there’s bound to be a prison rape joke in a flick like this but after the 10th the funny waned a bit) - this is definitely not Will Ferrell’s finest hour (see Step Brothers). In fact, much of the heart and hilarity in this flick came from Kevin Hart.

N ewcastle’s newest youth-oriented theatre company, Eclectic Productions, will be

debuting their first production this weekend - a gritty, but darkly comic study on dealing with tragedy and the strength that is necessary to survive.

One Good Thing, tells the story of Travis (Joel Mewes) - who is dealing with his parents separation and difficult relation-ship with his 20-year-old-brother and Erynne (Chloe McLean) - a rebellious punk girl who has been kicked out of home and is living in a mini van - two, seemingly disparate high school seniors whose worlds are falling apart. McLean, who is also one of the founders of Eclectic Productions said that while the play does deal with some difficult subject matter - it’s not all doom and gloom.

“Without giving too much away, it does

cover some dark topics - a couple of teen-agers trying to survive in a world of angst - but it’s also a black comedy and it has quite an uplifting and positive message,” she told TE.

McLean said that it was a desire to throw herself into the deep end of theatre that inspired her to start Eclectic Productions.

“I’ve always wanted to be involved with theatre and I figured that the best way to do that was to start a company and see how everything works,” she said.

“Everyone involved in the company is basically straight out of high school so it’s a great way for everyone to get valuable theatre experience.”

One Good Thing will be on at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre from Saturday, April 4 to Thursday, April 9. Tickets are, $15 (student) and $18 (adults) and can be purchased from http://bit.ly/one-good-thing-booking.
