Why do I…. Raise my hands when reciting the Bracha Al Netilat Yadayim? A. After we pour water on our hands, before saying the Bracha (and before drying them), we raise our hands in the air (Shulchan Aruch OC 162:3). This represents the spiritual elevation of the hands and doing so raises our spiritual consciousness. It is for this reason that the wording of the Bracha is phrased “Al Netilat Yadayim”, which means ‘taking’ or ‘raising’ one’s hands rather than the seemingly more appropriate to say ‘Al Rechitzat Yadayim’, on the washing of the hands A further reason given, is to ensure that the water touches every part of the hands, therefore we raise them to allow the water drip down the length of the hands. If an abundance of water is used there is less of a concern that the water will miss any parts of the hands, and therefore it wouldn’t be as necessary to lift them, however, according to the other reasons, it is important to raise the hands upwards even if a lot of water was used. (Mishna Berurah 162:9). It is also noted that the hands should remain raised from immediately after being washed until after they are dried (Mishna Berurah 162:3) Tefilah Schedule – Dec 1 - 7 Shacharit (Locations listed in separate box) Sunday ................................................. 6:45/8:00/9:00 am Monday & Thursday ..................... 6:00/6:10/7:00/7:45 am Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday .. 6:00/6:15/7:00/7:45 am Mincha Sunday-Friday ..................................................... 4:35 pm *On Thursday night with Maariv we begin inserting into the Amidah Vten Tal Umatar LvrachaNext Shabbat- Friday, Dec 6 Candles ................................................................ 4:26 pm Mincha & Kabbalat Shabbat ................................ 4:35 pm LOCATIONS FOR DAILY MINYANIM & DAF YOMI 6:00 Shacharit .............................................................
