“Estellés has conducted really successfully in every way. He has shown his elegance, his mastery of euphonic space, an anticipated upbeat pulse, the expression in his left hand, attention to detail at the entrances and a natural rhythm with the baton…” El Mundo, Spain.

José Luis Estellés enjoys a truly polyhedral career, in which he has combined his activity as orchestral conductor, soloist and pedagog with a rare equal

strength. As a clarinet soloist he has performed in Europe, USA, Mexico and Japan in collaboration with many of today’s most celebrated string quartets, instrumentalists and singers, and has recorded for the labels Turtle Records, Emergo Classics, Audiovisuals de Sarria, Anacrusi, Verso, Kairos, IBS Classical and Naxos. He has been Artistic Director of Musikene, and is very much sought after to give masterclasses all over the world. He has been a jury member at competitions Musikwettwerb ARD (Munich) and Aeolus Bläserwettbewerb (Dusseldorf) and CIBM in Valencia (Spain). In 2007 he was Artistic Director of Cameralia - International Academy and Festival Chamber Music of Galicia. He became solo clarinetist of the City Orchestra of Granada in 1991, working also with other Spanish orchestras, as well as in England, Belgium and Germany.

José Luis Estellés naturally extended his performing experience to his talent in orchestral conducting. At first, he worked closely with many Spanish Youth Orchestras orchestras and since its public debut in year 2000 with the Youth Orchestra of Andalucía he has performed in Spain, Belgium, France, England, Bulgary and Mexico. His conducting spans the symphonic genre, the opera and he is very devoted to today’s music, paying special attention to both the new and neglected Spanish repertoire. He was founder and Artistic Director of TAiMAgranada (2002-2008). He has worked with many different soloists including: Ute Lemper, Elisabeth Atherton, Mary Carewe, Katharina Rikus, Juan Manuel Lumbreras, José Ferrero, Manuel Lanza, Ana María Sánchez, Spanish Brass, Luis González, Javier Bonet and the Trio Arbós.

In recent years, José Luis Estellés has guest conducted orchestras and ensembles like London Sinfonietta, Orquesta de Extremadura, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Barcelona 216, Musikene Sinfonietta, Taller Contemporáneo de Salamanca, Ensemble Instrumenta de Oaxaca (Mexico), the Youth National Orchestra of Spain, Jove Orquesta Nacional de Catalunya and Tenebrae Vocal Ensemble of London, amongst others. In his role as soloist-conductor, he has also performed with the Orchestra of Extremadura, TAiMAgranada, Utopia Chamber Orchestra, I Solisti di Perugia and The Soloists of London. In 2014 had a successful debut in Granada’s International Festival, conducting Zender’s ‘Schuberts Winterreise’.

José-Luis Estellés has premiered works by composers Ramón Lazkano, Alfons Conde, Juan Cruz Guevara, Jorge Fernández Guerra, José García Román, Tomás Garrido, Simon Holt, Hideki Kozakura, Francisco Lara, Nuria Núñez, Luis de Pablo, Pablo Sorozábal and Mercedes Zavala, and has given first performances in Spain of works by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Sofia Gubaidulina, Simon Holt, Hans Werner Henze, Xenakis, Torres Maldonado, Magnus Lindberg, Toshio Hosokawa, Elena Kats-Chernin and Tamsy Davies. He conducted also the premiere of Adsum, http://www.joseluisestelles.com http://www.facebook.com/jlestelles

Some reviews [...] “…the conductor’s job is praiseworthy with a work as complex as this. José Luis Estellés showed a clear and precise idea of Zender’s score. The wonderful performance Estellés gave us of this particular Winter Journey, a gift that left all the delighted audience on a warm summer night.” [...]

Granada Hoy, June 2014. Youth National Orchestra of Spain. Zender/Schubert.

“Estellés, extraordinary clarinetist who is increasingly taking hold in his role as orchestral conductor, gave life to the score with a natural recreational sense …”

Scherzo Magazine, April 2013. Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga. Iamus/Davies/Núñez/Kats-Chernin

“Tremendous concert. The orchestra was conducted with complete mastery by José-Luis Estellés. He demonstrated a serene leadership, ductile and at one with the instrumental body”.

Diario de Cádiz, January 2011. Youth National Orchestra of Spain. Nuñez/Ginastera/Beethoven/Ravel.

“With his version of this piece, José Luis Estellés demonstrated that his ability as a soloist runs a close second to his mastery as an orchestral conductor.”
