Queridos hermanos y hermanas de la parroquia de Santa Clara de Asís,
Mientras nos embarcamos en nuestro viaje de Cuaresma esta semana a partir del Miércoles de
Ceniza, preparamos nuestra mente, cuerpo y espíritu para una temporada de oración y reflexión.
La Sagrada Escritura a menudo proporciona una idea de cómo debemos abordar el viaje. El
Evangelio de hoy hace exactamente eso en el verso final cuando Jesús les recuerda a Sus
discípulos:
"Sé perfecto, como tu Padre celestial es perfecto".
Es importante prestar mucha atención a cómo se usa la palabra perfecto. Jesús no estaba
sugiriendo a sus discípulos que lograran un estado de perfección al llevar vidas sin pecado. Pero
más bien, estaba sugiriendo que se volvieran más completos. Para entender mejor lo que Jesús
quiere decir, necesitamos referirnos a un versículo del Antiguo Testamento cuando Dios le dijo a
Israel:
“Serás santo; porque yo Jehová tu Dios soy santo ". (Levítico 19: 2)
Jesús, por lo tanto, está llamando a sus discípulos (y a nosotros) a ser santos y no perfectos. Ser
santo requiere que imitemos las cualidades amorosas de Dios a través de la palabra y la acción.
La Cuaresma nos presenta una maravillosa oportunidad de ser santos a través de la oración diaria,
el tiempo dedicado a la Sagrada Escritura, los pequeños sacrificios que hacemos, los actos de
caridad y la comunión con los demás. Hay varias iniciativas llenas de fe que ofrece nuestra
parroquia a lo largo de la Cuaresma que nos ayudarán a crecer espiritualmente. Te animo a que

Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. Clare of Assisi Parish,
As we embark on our Lenten journey this week starting on Ash Wednesday, we prepare
our mind, body and spirit for a season of prayer and reflection. Sacred Scripture often
provides insight as to how we should approach the journey. Today’s Gospel does just that in
the final verse when Jesus reminds His disciples to:
“be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
It is important to pay close attention to how the word perfect is being used. Jesus was not
suggesting to His disciples that they achieve a state of perfection by leading sinless lives. But
rather, He was suggesting that they become more whole. To better understand what Jesus
means, we need to refer back to a verse from the Old Testament when God said to Israel:
“You shall be holy; for I Yahweh your God am Holy.” (Lev. 19:2)
Jesus, therefore, is calling upon His disciples (and us) to be holy, and not perfect. To be holy
requires that we imitate the loving qualities of God through word and action.
Lent presents us with a wonderful opportunity to be holy through daily prayer, time spent in
Sacred Scripture, small sacrifices that we make, charitable acts, and fellowship with others.
There are a number of faith filled initiatives that our parish offers throughout Lent which will
help us grow spiritually. I encourage you to participate in one or all of them as your schedule
allows. Simply view the parish website, pick up a copy of the parish bulletin, or contact the
parish office for more information. As we journey together during Lent, let us strive to
become more holy as our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to do.

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” MATTHEW 5:44
Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of Stewardship is prayer.
When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts
as well.
"Pero te digo, ama a tus enemigos y reza por los que te persiguen ..." MATEO 5:44
Ama a tus enemigos, más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, sin duda. Pero, recuerda, el fundamento de la administración es la oración. Cuando estamos en estrecha comunicación con Dios, abre nuestro corazón y aparta nuestra atención
de "mí" y la acerca a Dios y a los demás. Nos permite tener un poco más de empatía por "nuestro enemigo". Si oramos por los demás, incluso por "nuestros enemigos",

2020 APPEAL: “WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?”
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest
commandment. And, the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.”
These words of Jesus remind us to love and support our neigh-bors in their time of need. Through the House of Charity Bish-
op’s Annual Appeal, we strive to do that throughout the six counties of the Diocese of Camden.
Your generosity provides services through Catholic Charities offices in each county of South Jersey. In addition, Home and Parish Healthcare Services of the Diocese of Camden brings new life and spirit into the hearts of those we cherish the most – our elderly and disabled, along with their fami-lies and caregivers. Together, we offer support to the weak, vulnerable, and disenfranchised.
Now we invite all parishioners to participate in this important effort. During House of
Charity Appeal Weekend, please make your sacrificial gift to help continue the mission of the Church here in the Diocese of Camden!
