CSMA What it means to belong to a Diocese… One of my jobs as a pastor is to help keep our parish connect-ed to the ‘bigger Church’ of the diocese and the universal Catholic Church. Our own Diocese of Belleville includes over 100 parishes throughout southern Illinois. The diocese has a variety of offices run by lay people who provide re-sources for each parish to have great Catholic schools, PSR (Sunday School) programs, and ministries of liturgy, pro-life, service to the poor, and many others. Once a year our diocese asks each Catholic to support the many services it takes to run a Church that covers all South-ern Illinois, from the poorest areas of Cairo, IL, to helping out our own parish and school ministries here at St. Clare. We need each household to do their best in making a pledge to our “Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal.” Many of our own parish ministries are supported by the CSMA and so we benefit directly from your contribution to it. Our Catholic interpretation of the biblical 10% tithing of one’s income for God, encourages each person to set aside 1% of that tithe to support their diocese and the other 9% divided between one’s own parish and other charities. If you have never given to this important diocesan campaign, please join your fellow Catholics in being an active part of the diocese to which you belong. Thank you for seeing the ‘bigger picture’ and being commit-ted to what it really means to be Catholic – being a part of something sacred beyond our own parish. If you did not receive a CSMA mailing sent to you from the diocese, please pick up an envelope on the center table in our gathering space. May God bless our generosity! Fr. Jim Deiters

MONDAY LENTEN SERIES Stations of the Cross Meditations: Side-by-Side with Jesus

Using our own parish icons of Jesus’ journey to Calvary, these Lenten reflections will help us examine our lives and unite our sufferings to Jesus, who suffered and died for us. They will also help us become more aware of the sufferings of the whole world,

see how God responds to our suffering by suffering with us, and grow in hope through Christ’s victory over sin and death.

Mondays: Mass at 6:00 p.m. Short Presentation and Opportunity for Reflection from 6:35—7:15 p.m.

March 8—Stations 6, 7, 8 & 9 March 15 - Stations 10, 11 and 12 March 22 - Stations 13 and 14

Each reflection will be led by Fr. Jim, Deacon John Gomez or Matt Flynn. The reflections will also be livestreamed through our parish website, YouTube channel and Facebook page, and the recordings will be available to watch afterwards as well.

Rice Bowls Available in Gathering Space The Season of Lent is a time to pray, fast and almsgiving as we reflect on how Christ calls us to return to Him. CRS Rice Bowls, a Lenten faith formation program from Catholic Social Services, offers resources that can help people of all ages, families and communities participate in these Lenten practices and deepen our faith. One way to participate in this program is to place the rice bowl on your kitchen table. As you gather for your meals, say a prayer for those in need and place your spare change in the bowl to help others. If interested, pick up a Rice Bowl, collect money and return to church on Holy Thursday.

Every Lent, the Church throughout the world celebrates the Scrutinies to help the Elect prepare to be initiated into the Catholic Church at Easter through Baptism, Confirma-tion and the Eucharist. These minor exorcisms help strengthen the Elect on their journey as well as reveal to them the areas of their life that still need to be illumined by God’s grace. This Lent, please pray for our Elect—Alexis Deets and her son, Owen Frazier. The Church asks the congregation to participate in these Scrutinies as well through our prayer and support. They also serve as moments for us to examine our own lives. To accompany our Elect at the 10:30 Mass this weekend, please reflect on the following questions: ♦ How is your life a well or spring already? When have

you been water for the thirsty? ♦ Are the relationships in your life healthy and life-

giving? ♦ For what do you thirst? What do you long for? ♦ Are parts of your life like a desert; dry and parched? ♦ How can Christ and His message of love and mercy

(continue to) change your life?

March 7: Fr. Pat York is the Dean of Students and Vice-Rector at Conception Seminary College. Fr. Pat recalls he considered the priesthood during his eighth grade year. He credits his parents as having the biggest influence on his priestly vo-cation. They encouraged their children to be open to God’s call as a priest or religious in the Church. The seed of his vocation took root in his family and grew from there. He would ask his parishioners, “Pray for the priests of our diocese. Support your parish priests. Pray fervently to the Lord for more religious vocations.” Fr. Pat also encourages parents to set an example for their children in practicing their faith, “do not treat it as a burden or obligation, but as a gift that is enrich-ing.” (The Tower Topics, by Fr. Paul Sheller, O.S.B.)
