  • TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

From outer space, the United States must seem peculiarly aglow these nights: we have

strung lights on every tree within reach. Sometimes, even tietacks and earrings

twinkle with “micro lights.” Clearly, something is afoot: there is a deep-down

yearning for the world to change. Yet, John the Baptist would probably be unplugging most of these lights if he had the chance. In today’s Gospel he turns people away from his

baptism of repentance. “Give some evidence that you mean to reform!” he cries.

What meaning do our holiday lights convey for you? In the deep and dark countryside, a single candle glowing in a window can be seen for miles. It signals welcome and readiness’ it is a beacon guiding strangers to the door, a token of a warm hearth, a loving embrace, a sign that those who have placed the candle

are awake and waiting. This year, set the timers aside, and each night as you light the candles in your windows, pray:

“May Christ find an eager welcome here. May this household be filled with the light of his word.” One candle at a time, our

faith community can reclaim the meaning of the lights of Advent hope

WE HAVE RESUMED OUR REGULAR MASS SCHEDULE.

ST. CLARE OF ASSISI: DAILY MASS—8:30AM

    SUNDAY MASS—5:30PM (SAT) VIGIL 7AM, 9AM, 11AM, & 1PM

    ST. FRANCIS XAVIER DAILY MASS—7:30AM

    SUNDAY MASS—4PM (SAT) VIGIL 8AM, 10AM & 12 NOON

Social Distancing protocols and wearing masks are required.

    CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE…

It is amazing how fast this strange year has flown by. Not to mention all

the protocols and adjustments we have made like social distancing, wearing masks and constant hand washing. All to

keep each other safe and healthy.

We even had no Masses for a couple of months and as of the printing of this bulletin, the obligation to attend Sunday Mass

    remains suspended.

With that being said we must think about and plan for the upcoming Christmas Masses. Due to the pandemic and the

social distancing guidelines we will be making a few adjustments to our Mass schedule for Christmas Eve and

    Christmas Day.

For Christmas Eve we will still have the 4pm Mass and Midnight Mass. Due to the current infection rate ,we estimate that we will only be able to accommodate 125 parishioners at

each Mass. Therefore, we will give out tickets for these Masses starting on December 15th. You may stop by the Rectory from 10am to 2pm to pick up tickets and receive a

pew assignment. To ensure fairness we must limit the tickets to a maximum of 5 tickets per envelope number. We will ask you for your envelope number when you pick up the tickets.

To accommodate an increase in attendance at the Christmas Day Masses, we will offer two extra Masses. Regular social

distancing protocols, including the wearing of masks, will remain in effect for all Masses

    . Christmas Day Masses will be as follows: 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm.

Please note there will NOT be a 7am Mass.

You are also welcomed to attend Mass at Saint Francis Xavier.

The schedule there will be: Christmas Eve—4pm & 10pm

    ADVENT CONCERT

    SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2020

    3PM

Come spend an afternoon listening to beautiful Christmas music.

Pieces by Handel, Haydn and Torelli as well as hymn and carol arrangements will be performed.

After the stressful year we have had, it would be nice to

sit and relax listening to beautiful music in a beautiful peaceful setting, St. Clare of Assisi Church.

Social Distancing protocols and wearing masks are required.

    OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS

    THIS WEEKEND

The Book of the Prophet Isaiah Chap 40, Verses 1-5, 9-11

The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley.

The Second Letter of Saint Peter

Chap 3, Verses 8-14 Conduct yourselves in holiness, hastening the

coming of the day of God.

The Gospel of Mark Chap 1, Verses 1-8

I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). Advent is a season of expectant joy and hope. Thanks be to God, with the development of three promising vaccines, we can finally say that we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. No one could have imagined that the course of this pandemic would have dragged on for so many months. But, just because we are starting to see some light doesn’t mean we should let our guard down in observing social distancing, mask wearing and personal hygiene. Together we not only protect ourselves, but also in a spirit of fraternal charity help to protect others, especially the vulnerable. During these past few months, many of us have been unable to celebrate those yearly traditions: birthdays, baby showers, weddings, First Holy Communions, graduations, etc. Without a doubt, we have all experienced some degree of loneliness or isolation during these months in which we have been unable to see so many friends and family. Hang in there just a little while more. Things are moving in the right direction. During this Advent season of hopeful self-reflection, let us prepare to make room in our hearts for the coming of Christ and for the celebration of the true meaning of Christmas: God’s nearness to us. Even when we don’t feel it emotionally, our faith reminds us that Christ is present among us in our suffering and isolation. Just hang in there a little while longer and let us keep one another and our healthcare workers in our prayers.
