About Yale Summer Session & Special ProgramsYale Summer Session offers a wide sample of the courses taught duringthe academic year. Each summer we welcome to campus hundreds of Yaleand non-Yale students from around the United States and the world. These students have the opportunity not only to interact with top Yalescholars and teachers but also to enjoy a taste of Yale campus lifethrough a wide range of social and athletic events organized by residentialcounselors. In addition to summer courses, our office administers otherprograms such as the PKU-Yale Joint Undergraduate Program in Beijingand the IARU Global Summer Program.
About the PhotographsYale Summer Session and Special Programs also offers students theopportunity to study abroad in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. In the summer, Yale faculty lead courses in language, history, anthropology, studio arts, film, and cultural studies. During term time, students can embark on the PKU program which is taught in Beijing byboth Yale and Peking University faculty. These photographs, taken by ourstudents, represent a few snapshots of the programs we offer abroadand the reflection statement offers insight into their experience beyondthe classroom.

Courtney Randolph, ‘14, Ezra Stiles CollegeYSS in Istanbul, Turkey: Archaeological Field Techniques andLaboratory IThe Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar in Istanbul were truly representative ofTurkey’s diversity and fusion of cultures. From the vendors and customers tothe food and trinkets for sale, the sense of a global community is evident, even in a place so iconic to Turkish culture.

Margaret Lazzarini, ‘13, Branford CollegeYSS in Santiago, Chile: Intro. To Observational Astrophysics On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the days my classmates and I didn’t haveastrophysics lecture and labs, we took it upon ourselves to enjoy the other sideof what Chile has to offer: a fabulous cultural scene. This photo was taken whilewe were on a walking tour of Santiago led by our Chilean host-mother, Cecilia, inthe famous Mercado Central in downtown Santiago. We waded through fishywater and thick crowds of market-perusing-Chileans to see what a day at themarket in Santiago was really like.

Lily Boettcher, ‘12, Pierson CollegeYSS in Beijing, China: Chinese House from Courtyard toCity/Landscape, Architecture, and UrbanismXing Chang, Sichuan, ChinaOn market day residents sold everything imaginable from the stoops of theirhomes and businesses on this narrow street in a modest town located two hourswest of the megacity of Chengdu. These two men walked with us silently forseveral blocks; their demeanor represents the amiable and thoughtful characterof the Chinese people. The scene is evocative of an old and experienced culture, and these men embody that thoughtfulness and wisdom in a way only a culturethis old could possibly know.

Sophia Clementi, ‘14, Saybrook CollegeYSS in Paris, France: Advanced Language Practice IISaintes Maries de la Mer, FranceTo me, France is a place with an incredibly regionally diverse culture. Every part ofFrance is a new experience to be discovered. Still, globalization has, in certainways, diminished these differences and a profit seeking tourism business hasdeveloped. The photo was taken in a small store in the Camargue region of France. The south of France is very well known for their artisan soap production, butbecause of tourists more and more stores are starting to sell the goods. They arebecoming less special. The photo captures the traditional colors and products ofthe region, while hinting at the industrialization of the historic tradition. YaleSummer Session was a way to get to know many different aspects of France andthis photo is just a representation of the contrasting viewpoints we experienced.

Megha Okhai, ‘13, Saybrook CollegeYSS in Mumbai, India: City, Society & Culture/A Linguistic History of IndiaThis market, a microcosm of Bombay, portrays how creativity thrives onspatial constraints. The photo illustrates the flawlessness with which sellerscan spruce up the dullest of spaces in the city by flamboyantly arranging theircolorful wares to entice the eager consumer. More importantly, this marketrepresents one of the many lifeblood points of the city, where the lives ofBombayites from all walks of life intersect for fleeting moments, amidst loudhaggling and the background noise of traffic.

Emilie Foyer, ‘13, Pierson CollegeYSS in Rome, Italy: RomeNear the Pantheon, in a small cobblestone street that leads towardsthe church of Saint Ignatius there is a small pelletteria where twoolder women work hard to make and sell their leather goods of manyshapes and sizes. You never know what you might find, but whether itbe a roman ruin you had never noticed or a new store, it is impossibleto come home unsatisfied after wandering around the Eternal City.

Sudiptho Paul, ‘12, Silliman CollegeYSS in Dubrovnik, Croatia: History & Culture of Southeastern EuropeSarajevo, Bosnia and HerzegovinaVisiting this region of the capital city, commonly referred to as the “Old Town,” was avery unique excursion, as the Turkish influence in this part was a refreshing burst ofculture exposure. In the midst of the bustling atmosphere, observing the innocenceof this young boy gazing at the vibrantly colored fruit in the Bascarsija bazaar in theStari Grad was a touching experience. Given the hardships endured during the Siegeof Sarajevo, it was humbling to see that the people have not changed theirtraditional lifestyles, still valuing the simplicity of such things as this fruit stand.

Julie M. Reiter, ‘14, Berkeley CollegeYSS in Paris, France: Paris in the 20’sI stumbled upon this vintage photograph while scouring a Parisianflea market. Upon eyeing this image, left behind by a previousforager, I instantly felt connected to the woman pictured in it. Westood in the same site, experienced similar emotions, and had ourphotographs taken in front of the Eiffel Tower…with only fifty or soyears separating us. If that isn’t magical, I don’t know what is.

Amelia Earnest,’14, Pierson CollegeYSS in Quito: Intermediate Spanish I & II + Culture Otavalo, EcuadorThe variety of the types of corn, or “choclo” set out in the marketshows this crop’s importance to Ecuadorian culture. This photo speaksto the daily market life, a lifestyle in which the vendors live off of thefresh food they and their neighbors grow and sell (as is seen by thewoman in the forefront of the image lunching while watching over hergoods). The contrast of light and shadow reflect on the disparitybetween the rich natural resources of Ecuador and the severe socialproblems present today.

Sabire Ipek Demir, ‘14, Berkeley College YSS in Dubrovnik, Croatia: History & Culture ofSoutheastern EuropeSarajevo, Bosnia and HerzegovinaA rainy day in Sarajevo’s historical “Bascarsija” (Main Market). The littlestreet is full of coppersmith shops that display their gorgeous inlaidtrays, coffee sets and ewers outside. Among them, two soldier helmetscaught my attention, placed on those beautiful souvenirs. Unfortunately, remnants of the ‘92-‘95 war are also among the things that people canbuy to remember Sarajevo.
