Presidents ReportApril 2010From the desk of . . .The ChiefHello everyone, as always, I trust this newsletterfinds all in good health and spirits. As many are aware, I have accepted the nomina-tion for State President of ABATE of Florida, Inc.However, this decision was not made lightly andrequired much thought and consideration. I haveabsolutely no doubt that I am capable and quali-fied to assume this responsibility, as do my verymany supporters statewide, I and Frenchie Moore-land this MROs past Sgt St Arms will be runningtogether as your new President and Vice Presi-dent.Again, as I stated earlier we feel we are veryqualified and are ready to go. The one lingeringdrawback to this whole process is the never end-ing nonsense that inevitably has already started atthe state level. Unfortunately, the current admini-

stration has as always stooped to the lowest lev-els and is now using the state website to spreaddissention and ill will toward me directly simplybecause I accepted the nomination.Currently, the state website says that because theSouthwest chapter didnt take bike tickets thatsomehow means that the President of that Chap-ter is somehow not worthy of the Presidency. Towhich I respond BUNK.The site fails to mention the tremendous strides

the Southwest chapter has made in teaching ourMSAP to students nor do they mention the oppor-tunity to rewrite the Florida drivers handbook per-taining to motorcycles this permission was alsoobtained by the Southwest chapter and brought tothe state level many months ago.I for one feel that its way past time for change asdo many others statewide. The most commoncomplaint I hear from the membership is that they

are tired of being ignored, they feel as though theyare not being heard and if anyone wants to stepup and offer solutions to existing problems withABATE they are publicly humiliated and ridiculedto the point where we have lost many great people

over the years. In our gorgeous state of Florida we are affordedsome of the greatest riding conditions in the coun-try we are blessed with thousands of miles ofbeautiful highways and country back roads not tomention the time frame we ride twelve months outof the year. These reasons by themselves indicatethe need for a strong and powerful MRO and yetafter approximately thirty years in this stateABATE of Florida houses less than eight thousand

members. This is the very first problem tobe addressed. We have people that have been on board withABATE for many years and feel the same.We can not continue to do the same thing yearafter year without changing anything and expectthings to change. Change does not come easyand will not happen overnight. We will need thecooperation of all the Chapters around the stateand an open line of communication to the stateboard of directors, members should not be afraidto speak at a meeting for fear of being ridiculedetc. This ongoing problem will immediately goaway once we are able to put the correct people inplace.Thank you to all that help to support this MRO itwill be my pleasure to serve you at the state level. In closing I would like to add that this is not aboutme or anyone else, this is about our states MROand everyone that is willing to contribute to thegreater good of all motorcyclists, we should have

the premier MRO in the country and it is my fullintention to bring this dream to fruition.

Thank You for the opportunity to serve you.

QUICK TIPS: MSFs Guide to Group RidingMotorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but formany, riding as a group -- whether with friends ona Sunday morning ride or with an organized mo-torcycle rally -- is the epitome of the motorcyclingexperience. Here are some tips to help ensure afun and safe group ride:Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gastank.

Hold a riders meeting. Discuss things like theroute, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (seediagrams on next page). Assign a lead andsweep (tail) rider. Both should be experiencedriders who are well-versed in group riding proce-dures. The leader should assess everyones rid-ing skills and the groups riding style.Keep the group to a manageable size, ideallyfive to seven riders. If necessary, break the groupinto smaller sub-groups, each with a lead andsweep rider.

Ride prepared. At least one rider in each groupshould pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full toolkit, so the group is prepared for any problem thatthey might encounter.Ride in formation. The staggered riding forma-tion (see diagram below) allows a proper spacecushion between motorcycles so that each riderhas enough time and space to maneuver and to

react to hazards. The leader rides in the left thirdof the lane, while the next rider stays at least onesecond behind in the right third of the lane; therest of the group follows the same pattern. A sin-gle-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, un-der conditions of poor visibility or poor road sur-faces, entering/leaving highways, or other situa-tions where an increased space cushion or ma-

neuvering room is needed.Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reducethe space cushion. If you suddenly needed toswerve to avoid a hazard, you would not haveroom to do so. You dont want handlebars to getentangled.Periodically check the riders following in yourrear view mirror. If you see a rider falling be-hind, slow down so they may catch up. If all theriders in the group use this technique, the groupshould be able to maintain a fairly steady speed

without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.If youre separated from the group, dont panic.Your group should have a pre-planned procedurein place to regroup. Dont break the law or ridebeyond your skills to catch up.For mechanical or medical problems, use acell phone to call for assistance as the situationwarrants.

    Safety Safety Safety SafetyHey Yall,

Greetings from the Great Sandy South

FYI - May is MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH!The 15th Annual Freedom Rights Rally is now history. Representing SouthwestChapter were Birdy and Smokey Clark, Richie Mocny, CJ, Frankie Kennedy andEileen Horan.Todd and Liz Peterson were able to stop by to say hi for a few hours, as they wereon the road truckin.

The ride to the Capital was really nice. Mudder rang the bell for each downedmember from ABATE and each person lost at the Oklahoma City bombing, whichhad it anniversary on the same day. This was our first time to go to the capital andwe really enjoyed it. I hope everyone will be able to witness the ceremony someday soon.

The Chapters safety instructors are going to teach MSAP classes on Sanibel/Captiva on Wednesday, April 28th and Thursday April 29th, at the Island WaterAssociation.

We will also be setting up a safety booth at the Downtown Fort Myers Bike Nighton Saturday, May 8th.

Dear Fellow ABATE Members,We firmly believe, that if one knows the Lord Jesusas his/her personal savior, the best part of our exis-tence is yet to come. This could include some seri-ous riding! The scriptures/ Bible, God's word, tells us that in thenot so distant future and perhaps in our lifetime, Godwill remove from the earth all those who know Himand his Son. Most biblical scholars believe this willhappen immediately before a period known as theGreat Tribulation. The Great Tribulation will be botha period of peace and then a period of turmoil, suchthe world has never seen.At the end of this time, a great battle will take placein the mid-east at Armageddon. When all hopeseems lost and it appears the enemies of Israel, led

by the Antichrist will prevail, the Lord will empty outthe heavens of all the saints (those who have diedknowing the Lord and those who were taken up fromthe earth by the Lord before the Great Tribulationbegan) and all the angels. The saints, the angels, and Jesus will make up the mighty army of God. TheLord will lead this army on a white horse. But, the

Lord Jesus, will Himself, defeat Israel's enemies.

The defeat of the Antichrist will set up a thousand-year reign of which there will be peace upon theearth. The saints of God will help the Lord adminis-trate the earth. It is entirely possible that we could be riding our mo-torcycles during that one thousand years. And, ridingconditions could be absolutely perfect with no cagersto cut us off or run us over! Maybe the Lord will haveHis bikers ride behind Him on his horse, into the de-feating battle of God's enemies?

At some time, there will be the creation of the newHeaven and the new earth! We are told the streets ofHeaven are paved with gold! There is only one way to find out if there will be mo-torcycle riding after the first part of our existenceand/or if we will ride on streets made of gold.Place your future in Gods hands by praying, DearGod, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, myheavenly Father, I confess that I am a sinner andhave been separated from You. I ask forgiveness ofmy sins. I repent and accept this gift of repentanceand I wish to be free in you. I confess with my mouththat your son Jesus is my savior and died for me. Ibelieve in my heart that You raised Him from thedead. I receive Jesus into my heart and ask Him tobecome the center of my life. I ask, in the Name ofJesus. Amen."2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is inChrist, he is a new creation; the old has gone, thenew has come!"Please call us and let us know of your decision for

Him.Blessings,Tom (Estero River and Southwest ABATE Life Mem-ber and SW Chapter Chaplain) and Kathy (SWABATE Life Member)[email protected] - 239-267-8641
