August 4, 2013 The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
BARNS FILLED WITH RICHES The mortgage is paid off. So are the loans that were taken out for college tuition and children’s weddings. The second home that was once a far-off dream is now so close that it seems safe to dig out the real estate magazines. And then . . . a daughter or son can no longer take care of a child. It’s time to start over, this time as grandparents in the parents’ role. Thousands of older adults face this situation today, be-coming temporary or permanent guardians of their grandchildren. Vanity of vanities. The years of toil with sights set on a great reward now belong to someone else: food, clothing, braces, summer camps, and school tuition. But, as one grandmother said of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Megan, “It has all been worth it. She brings such joy. What would I do without her?” And so the barns filled with “riches” are again taken down and new and true riches are discovered. Once again a new self is found in Christ, and the storehouse is filled with life that is truly pleasing to God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

La segunda casa, que una vez fue un sueño lejano está ahora tan cerca que sería recomendable empezar a revisar las revistas de bienes raíces. Miles de adultos mayores se enfrentan hoy a esa situación, y se convierten en
tutores temporales o permanentes de sus nietos. Vanidad de vanidades. Los años de trabajo arduo con miras a una gran jubilación hoy pertenecen a alguien más: comida, ropa, ortodoncia, campamentos, escolaridades. Pero, como dijo una abuela de su nieta de 13 años, “Todo ha valido la pena. Ella me da una enorme alegría. ¿Qué haría yo sin ella?” Y así el granero lleno de “bienes” se vacía y descubrimos nuevas y verdaderas riquezas. B APTISM: If you are seeking baptism for your infant to 5 year old, we ask that at least one parent be
registered at St. Clare for six months prior to baptism. The parents are asked to attend a pre-baptism class. Please call the parish office to register for baptism and pre-baptism classes. H OSPITAL/HOME, HOLY COMMUNION, AND SICK VISITS: For Holy Communion, please contact the
parish office during office hours. A Priest or Eucharistic Minister will visit you and attend to your needs. In case of hospitalization, please inform the admissions office that you are Catholic, so that they will be able to notify us. In case of an emergency or death in the family, a priest can be reached 24 hours a day. Call the parish office number anytime for an emergency pager number.
M ARRIAGE: The bride and/or groom must be registered and actively participating in the parish
for at least three months. Then, a six-month preparation program is required. Please call the office for further information.
R ELIGIOUS EDUCATION: We offer religious education classes for children beginning with the
first grade and running through high school. For more information, contact the office of Religious Education at 252-6950.
Our parish has become so large, the only way we have of verifying Mass attendance is by use of Sunday envelopes. (This is significant when requiring services from the church i.e., baptism or marriage.)

READINGS AND QUESTION OF THE WEEK FOR August 4, 2013 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL: Lk 12:13-21 (trust in God, not in possessions) ADULTS: When have you felt that possessions were becoming too important in your life? CHILDREN: Have you ever received a gift you wanted a lot and then found it didn’t make you as happy as you thought it would? TEACHERS NEEDED FOR FALL CLASSES Teachers will be needed for Elementary R. E. classes in the fall. On Saturday we need a second grade and a teacher for an older Communion class. On Wednesday evening, we need an 8th grade teacher. Please call 252-6950 for further information and to volunteer. CHILDREN’S BIBLES I am happy to tell you that we now have children’s Bibles for sale in our R. E. office. These Bibles contain the entire Old and New Testaments. They contain 2000 pages of stories and very colorful illustrations of different Bible stories as well as helpful hints for parents to talk with their children about the stories. The cost is $20.00 each. Please contact the Religious Education office at 661- 252-6950. FAMILIES ON HOME STUDY Don’t forget to make an appointment for your child’s interview before fall classes begin. The interview generally lasts twenty minutes and is the last step before going on to the next class. Please call 252-6950 to set up your appointment. VIRTUS SEXUAL PREDATOR AWARENESS WORKSHOP If you volunteer with or around children/youth and have never taken this workshop or if you need to recertify in this class, it will be given Friday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m. The class is three hours and will be held in Renehan hall. Our seniors adjourn to the “Youth Center” after 9am Mass where they play pool, dominos, knit/crochet, use the computer lab, have cof-fee and goodies, solve the world’s problems or just sit and visit with one another. Our “Knit Wits” and “Happy Hookers” meet on Tuesdays to make blankets and hats for several non-profit organizations that serve those in need.
You don’t need an invitation. Just show up and meet new friends!

St. Clare’s Children’s Choir
is looking for members who are at least 7 years of age, whose family is registered and attending Mass at St.
Clare. We have rehearsal each Tuesday in the church
beginning September 10th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. (You must commit to attending all
rehearsals. The children’s choir serves at the 9am Mass the First Sunday of each month.)

NOT YOUR ORDINARY BIBLE STUDY!.........
Our Little Rock Scripture study will be adding a new feature to its study this August. On Thursday evening, August 22nd at 7pm in Renehan Hall, we will be reading Rediscovering Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. This book was our Christmas gift last year from Fr. Olin and it is truly one that should be opened and read if not shared with everyone you know! If you do not have the book, and would like to get a copy to join us in this study, the cost is $3 per book. After this 6 week course, we will begin our Scripture study on the Gospel of Matthew! The cost of this study is $15 for the materials. We also are offering the same study on Wednesday mornings, beginning August 21st at 9:30am. Since that group already read, Rediscovering Catholicism, we will begin with the book, Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly. You can purchase that book on your own or call me and I will purchase multiple copies together at $10 per book. Let me know ASAP if you want to join us. After this study, we will continue with our scripture study on the Gospel of Matthew as well. We are called to be a light to the world. Slow down and take the time to be that light. If you are attending Mass at St. Clare and are not registered, PLEASE, fill out a registration form. Registration forms can be found in English and in Spanish on the bulletin boards at all the entrances of the church. Please know that if you wish to have a child baptized or enroll them in Religious Education classes or need a letter to be a godparent in another church, we cannot verify your presence in our parish without a registration on file.
People who registered some years ago, but moved and did not give us a change of address may have dropped out of our system. If you have been in this parish all your life but are no longer living at home with your parents, or if you were married here and think that means we have all your information in a computer that may not be the case.
