Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time • October 6, 2019

“The innocent victim of abortion, children who die of hunger or from bombings, immigrants who drown in the search for a better tomorrow,

the elderly or the sick who are considered a burden, the victims of terrorism, wars, violence and drug trafficking, the environment devastated by man’s predatory relationship with nature: At stake in all of this is the gift of God,

of which we are noble stewards, but not masters.” Pope Francis — September 23, 2015

Gospel Reflection “When you have done all you have been commanded, say...We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” The metaphor in the story could seem harsh to us today. A servant has worked hard all day and rather than receiving a much-needed respite, the master commands an additional task. Jesus, however, is appearing to their sensibilities. This was a hierarchical society in which everyone had a place. His listeners would know this. No servant would presume a reward for good deeds. It’s important to remember that we do have a place at God’s table. But we don’t “earn” it. Dining with the Lord at the heavenly wedding feast requires surrender. It requires deep faith in God and His promises. It also requires commitment. The kingdom takes work! There are fields to plow and initiatives to prepare. There are sheep to tend to and family to care for. There are people waiting for our yes to generous service. When we serve dinner at a homeless shelter, we are waiting on the table of Christ. When we visit an ill relative, we’re imitating the Good Samaritan. We’re visiting Jesus! We’re growing His kingdom of life and love. The Gospel today reminds us to check our motives. Are we serving because we’re seeking a reward? Or because we have faith that this is who we’re meant to serve? That is, is this where we’re meant to be? The Gospel reminds us that this faith can do powerful things! “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree … Be uprooted and planted in the sea and it would obey you.” But ultimately, we’re not the ones doing the deeds. We’re not the ones “earning” the grace. Faith and the good we do for others, is a gift.

As we continue to move forward with the On Mission process working towards becoming one parish, we would like to keep you informed as well as provide the opportunity through listening sessions for you to ask questions and offer comments and suggestions. Please plan to attend one of the listening sessions this week, scheduled for October 7-10. Each evening will begin at 7:00PM and conclude at 8:15PM. Monday, October 7 at St. Clare of Assisi Tuesday, October 8 at St. Thomas à Becket Wednesday, October 9 at Holy Spirit Thursday, October 10 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary

The Agenda for each evening is as follows: Gather for prayer Discussion on the status of our parish grouping administration Timeline presented leading up to July 2020 Follow up regarding the proposed revised weekend Mass schedule Questions

Thank you for your involvement and commitment as we continue on our journey of faith together. In Christ, Fr. Fred Cain, Fr. Bill Terza, Fr. Ken Kezmarsky, Deacon Gerry Como, Amy LaMartina and John Flynn

LISTENING SESSIONS

This Sunday, October 6 you are invited to participate in

Life Chain, a peaceful, prayerful, pro-life demonstration that includes the residents of Baldwin, Brentwood and Whitehall. Pro-life signs will be held by participants lining both sides of Brownsville Road near Brentwood Towne Square between 2:00-3:00PM with an hour of silent prayer. The St. Elizabeth Respect Life Group invites all parishioners to join them and other local parishes for this important pro-life public witness.

Each October the Church celebrates Respect Life Month. This Sunday, October 6 is RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life.

OCTOBER 20

This is the day that the Church renews her

missionary commitment to bring the love of our

Lord Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. On that evening, hear from one of our own

parishioners, Rose Lord, who has been actively

involved in bringing the love of Christ “to the

ends of the earth” in Lebrun, Haiti. Rose will

share her experience with us as we reflect on

our baptismal call to be missionary disciples.

Rose shared a brief account of her experience: For the past six years I have been working with a charitable organization to help bring some relief to a remote village in the mountains of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere—Haiti. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter very near to Haiti’s capital, Port au Prince, wreaked havoc on the country, effecting a death toll of over 300,000. Since then, Haiti has been hit by two hurricanes. Life is a constant struggle in Haiti, but her people are resilient. Despite natural disasters, lack of infrastructure, ineffective government and extreme poverty, they dream of a better future for their children and are working hard towards that goal. I’ve made five volunteer trips to the village of Lebrun in the southwestern part of Haiti and went again in September. The non-profit organization I work with is called HavServe. The name reflects their motto: If you have, you too can serve. In other words, if you have time, resources, energy and skills, you can serve. HavServe has done some amazing work in Lebrun in the nine years that they’ve been working there, including building a school that is currently attended by 100 children who would otherwise not have any access to education. My role has been to help establish home and community gardens—work that I’ve also been doing in Guatemala for fourteen years. Learning to create gardens enables the people to provide for themselves and their families. Working with HavServe and the people of Lebrun has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life; one that I would like to share with the people of our parish grouping. I will be showing a slide show of the work I have done and I look forward to sharing the fruits and joys of this mission with you!

Thank you and God bless you, Rose Lord

Faith Formation

As we move forward as a faith community, we know that Jesus is at the heart of all that we do as church. As we work together and journey towards our merger, the parish grouping of St. Clare of Assisi, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit and St. Thomas à Becket are teaming up to support the ministry of catechesis, that is, forming others in the Ways of Jesus Christ and His Church. Committed to creating a safe environment for all and creating an atmosphere that is safe, hope-filled, dedicated to the Gospels and rooted in respect, reverence and responsibility, we embrace each child and each encounter as an opportunity to enrich the hearts, minds and spirits of our young people. Accomplishing this requires a team working together. There are jobs to be done that are small (taking 20 minutes a session) and some are larger, but there is something for everyone. We are looking for:

Parking lot attendants/traffic control Classroom Assistants

Catechists Hall monitors Office Support

Call 412-882-5023 if you are able to give us a hand. We have programs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. All volunteers must complete their clearances and safe environment training. You may have done this already for your child’s school and the Veritas program for safe environment. WE NEED and WANT you, please consider volunteering. It is a wonderful way to give witness to all the children of our Faith Community.

OPPORTUNITIES

Lord, We thank you for the gifts of our children.

They are the youngest of our seeds

planted in the soil of our church.

Open their eyes so they may see

the love of their community.

Open their ears to hear the good news

of your Word.

Open their hearts so they may feel

your loving embrace.

On Sunday, October 13 the Children’s Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at the Noon Mass at St. Thomas à Becket. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is for children between the ages of 3-6. What is the Liturgy of the Word with Children? After the opening prayer, the presider invites children to come forward to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word. After a blessing, the children follow the adult leader and assistants to the special location prepared for them. (Cry/Comfort Room) In their liturgy, the children hear the readings from the Adapted Lectionary for Children These readings are suitable for younger children and the children will listen to the Word of God, sing and engage in a teaching, say a simple Apostles Creed and offer prayer intentions. They return to the assembly with their leaflet during the parish offertory.

The West Jefferson Hills Knights of Columbus, Council #11887, held their Council Level Annual Soccer Challenge competition for girls and boys ages 9 through 14 years old on September 11. Champions in the girl’s age groups were 9 year old Ali King

and 10 year old Allison Wojnar. Champions in the boy’s age groups were 9 year old Tiago Ochoa, 10 year old Jacob Surrena, 11 year old Cody O’Hare and 13 year old Nathan Powell. The above champions of the Council Level competition advanced onto the District Level competition with the exceptions of Ali King and Cody O’Hare who couldn’t compete due to personal reasons. 11 year old Aydin Hajiyev attended the District Level competition as the runner up in the 11 year old boy’s age group. All of these competitors from our Local Council Level won their respective age groups at the District Level competition advancing them to the Regional Level competition. Competitors Tiago Ochoa, Jacob Surrena, Aydin Hahiyev and Nathan Powell won their respective age groups at the Regional Level competition advancing them to the State Level competition to be held on Sunday, November 3 at St. Patrick’s Church/School Complex in Carlisle, Pa. Children's Liturgy of the Word for ages Preschool to 6 years old will be celebrated in the Cry Room on

Sunday, October 13 at the Noon Mass. The room will remain available for those who

need it during that time.

ATTENTION: We are in the process of installing locks on the upper level doors to the Preschool (side closest to the Coffee Shoppe), so that groups can use the lower level classroom and Coffee Shoppe during the day while Preschool is in session. Until this project is complete, all groups will need to meet in a different location. Please contact the office at St. Thomas à Becket (412-655-2885) for assistance with a temporary meeting location. Thank you for your patience as we ensure the safety of our children.

Heartfelt sympathy to the family & friends of Eric Draper of our parish. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed be embraced by the Heavenly Father unto everlasting life.
