FROM GREEN TO GOLD

With this weekend we enter what the Church calls Passiontide. It is the final two weeks of Lent, leading up to the celebrations of the Lord’s Last Supper on Holy Thursday evening, His passion and death on Good Friday afternoon, and the mother of all ceremonies, the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. The last two weeks are considered a bit more intense. That is why the Crucifix and the statues in church are covered in violet (purple). It helps to create an atmosphere of intensified penance, as we then await their unveiling. This of course also means Lent is nearly over. If we haven’t been as faithful to our Lenten practices of increased prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we have this final thrust before Easter. We have these two weeks to really strive for deeper holiness and greater faith. My prayer is we use this time well and truly grow spiritually. Attending this week’s installment of our Lenten Reflection series on Tuesday night is one way to work on this. Participating in the Lenten Soup Supper hosted by our parish Boy Scout troop is another way. Following that penitential dinner with the Stations of the Cross would also further help, as would going to confession which immediately follows the Stations. Holy Week is even more intense than this week. I will discuss that further here next week. One of the practices of Lent, as I mention above, is almsgiving. Specifically this involves being charitable whether it be with our financial resources, with our time, or with our skills with which God may have blessed us. It is a matter of truly giving, more than merely giving from our excess. Helping those less fortunate than ourselves is what this is all about. Helping the truly poor particularly is a duty of ours and not only during Lent. That said; I have had more and more people commenting to me about the growing number of individuals who are outside of Mass on weekdays, but especially on weekends. Many of them are good people who may be struggling in different ways. That they are here every day or every weekend may cause us to question their motives. I presume word has gotten out that our parishioners are generous, so they continue to come and in greater numbers. That is a reflection on you and your tremendous generosity, which I have mentioned here in this column multiple times before. What we don’t want to do is enable any kind of less than good behavior. There would seem to be a limit to all of this as well. No doubt this can all be a bit annoying and some are downright upset about this. We are somewhat restricted on what we can do. I also presume that the more you give, the more they will come.

I certainly hope that no one feels obligated to give. Many of these people are not homeless. I can assure you we as a parish provide ample funds to the poor—at the rectory door, through our St. Vincent de Paul Society, and with funding to local groups such as ALIVE and to the diocesan Catholic Charities which in turn have a number of programs for the poor. I have a policy that if these individuals solicit on the sidewalk outside of Mass I will not give them parish funds that day. We are considering withholding any parish funding if they solicit after Mass. In that way it will be up to you (and them) as to how they receive gifts. Again, we all should want to be charitable. We have a duty to be. But there also can be limits on this and we want to use the donations you give us in the best way possible so that people in need are truly helped. This is all something we can think and pray about these last two weeks of Lent. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this. I sincerely thank you for your great generosity!

In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

"In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let not her name depart from your lips, never suffer it to leave your heart. And that you may obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her footsteps. With her for guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you shall not grow weary; if she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal."

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
