A Settings Approach

The three key settings for physical activity behaviour change include:• Schools• Workplaces• Community

There are multiple types/levels of influence on PA behaviours:

Intrapersonal factors Social/cultural factors Physical environments Policies are usually needed to

change physical environments

Workplace

Displaying motivational or informative posters, signage or brochures about the benefits of physical activity and some tips on getting active;

Promoting and encouraging employees to use the stairs.  Use the ‘footprint’ stickers to guide people toward the stairs rather than walking straight to the lift; Promote ‘walking meetings’, lunch-time walks and 5-10 minute walk breaks during the day

Providing bicycle racks or alternative secure bicycle storage to encourage people to cycle to work;

Providing information on local opportunities for physical activity;

Publicising physical activity opportunities through email, company intranet or websites, links to the be active website, noticeboards and newsletters;

Purchasing corporate memberships of local fitness centres.  Some local fitness centres offer attractive corporate packages which allow employees reduced membership rates;

Providing on-site facilities such as gyms (this may be an option for large employers);

Providing showers, change room facilities and lockers for those who wish to cycle, walk or jog to work or participate in more vigorous activities in and around the working day;

Supporting sports and physical activity clubs such as social football and netball teams, and walking and jogging groups; and

Encouraging employees to form corporate teams for events such as Corporate Cup, the be active tour and the Masters Games.

School Settings

Schools play a major role in shaping children’s attitudes towards PA and living an active lifestyle. Schools encourage lifelong patterns of PA.

School based programs are; Moderately effective People who participated in

these programs are more likely to be active for life.

Print material and school curriculum appears to be the most effective methods.

Active after schools programhttp://www.ausport.gov.au/aasc/index.aspHowever PA decreases as students

during the secondary years due to a crowded curriculum and student subject choices.

Schools can increase PA by; Following government

recommendations for time allocated to PE.

Providing sufficient sports equipment and facilities / public use.

Promoting school sporting events

Walking School Bus

The Walking School Bus Program is a VicHealth initiative that’s giving communities an effective and easy way to get children walking to school again.

Today in Victoria nearly one-third of all children spend less than 5 minutes walking per day. Inactive children are more likely to be overweight – with the proportion of Australian children who are in this category now reaching 25%. Walking to and from school gives children the opportunity to engage in regular physical activity.

More than 58 Victorian councils have implemented Walking School Bus programs.

At least 3200 primary school students from more than 200 primary schools use the Walking School Bus to get to school, with the help of 800 volunteers.

The ‘buses’ have become a very positive part of school and community life and offer many health, environmental and safety benefits.

Walking School Bus programs can be implemented by schools with the help of your local council.

level The size of the organisation Facilities available Lack of support or interest from

workers

Tips for being more active Take the stairs instead of the

Community Settings

A ‘community’ refers to local groups of people, whole cities or whole nations.

Strengthening the communities knowledge and interest in the benefits of physical activity is therefore vital.

Possible local influences:• Urban design (Town

planners)• Road characteristics

(Transportation)• Stairwell characteristics

(Architects)• Park characteristics

(Recreation, landscape architects

• Crime (Justice & law enforcement

Community strategies include; Developing local facilities Use of community venues that

encourage physical activity Free health checks at shopping

centres Educative sessions for community

members on health issues. Review of council policies
