THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP FROM A PARISHIONER

In 1958 when my wife and I married, income for a college graduate averaged $450 a month. As a bank teller, my salary was considerably less. We did our best to the and when I went to work at another bank for a bit more income, we in-creased our offerings accordingly. An opportunity arose for me to become a bank examiner for the US Treasury Dept., with yet s ll higher pay, we increased our Sunday offerings again. By now we were parents having adopted our first child. Bank ex-amining required considerable traveling away from home and two years later having been transferred from Los Angeles to San Bernardino a posi on for Chief Deputy Treasurer at the County became available. I competed for the posi on and was selected. With the increase in pay, we again increased our

the; not only at the beginning of my employment but for the next 20 years during which me I was then the Assistant Coun-ty Treasurer and Investment Office. Upon re rement from the County and being only in my mid fi ies, I went to work for a brokerage company. The pay was considerable to say the least. I had no idea that I could make in 2 years, 8 mes the income I had worked for 20 years prior. What am I trying to say? That I did all this on my own? OH, NO! It had taken some reflec on and some me to realize that our Heavenly Father guided me and had His hand in what had happened in my life and that of my family. Through some mys-terious enlightenment, I was told that what was given to us, we must in turn share with others less fortunate. Our Holy Fathers, Pope Francis in Rome, and in Heaven, have told us and demonstrated that we really do not own anything. We are merely caretakers of what our Lord God grants us. As a parish community, what does this mean for us now? I am told that we have something like 5,000+ families who call San Luis Rey their parish. If only half that number are regular contributors can you imagine what tremendous good can come if 3,000 of us added only one dollar a week to be desig-nated to the Social Concerns Office; not reducing your normal offering but an addi onal amount in a separate envelope. One dollar a week or $4 or $5 a month would amount to something like $150,000 a year! We could virtually eliminate or surely reduce the hardship felt by so many in our community. Not only at holiday mes, but year round. I cannot but feel that God would bless you as He has my family. In closing, I will tell a true story as well as I remember it: in 1959 I was coun ng the Sunday offering at a previous church where we were members and when the usher brought in the collec on and we proceeded to separate the currency, coins, envelopes, etc. I happened to grab an envelope that had rolled coins in it—or so I thought. As I opened the envelope, there, poorly wrapped, were three rolls of pennies. The wrappers had come apart and I mumbled something like “Oh brother!” and I was about to include them with the loose coin pile when I dis-covered a note. I read it and put it in my pocket. I realize that there are some among us that cannot afford to give, on the other hand there are those of us who can do more. Won’t you please think and pray and TRUST in God? Of, the note! It read, “Dear Father Bell, I’m sorry that I am unable to give more but since the death of my husband, John, things have been a li le

ght, I know you’ll understand.” Sincerely...the signature was that of my mother.

Thank you and God bless you—John Raymond

STEWARDSHIP IS…

It is difficult to teach or prac ce stewardship, unless we have a clear understanding of exactly what stewardship is. If we wish to embrace stewardship, we must gradually learn to embrace every defini on or aspect of stewardship. This week, here are five addi onal defini ons of Steward-ship. Which ones touch your heart or your life? · A Love Response Once we allow God to truly take up resi-dence in our hearts we become so overwhelmed by His abun-dant love for us that we just naturally feel the need to join our lives with Him and dedicate our me, talent and treasure to carrying out God’s work here on earth. Our generosity comes from within and not from any external pressure or reward. · Propor onate Giving Stewardship calls us to realize that each of us is called to give as God has given to us. We no longer base our giving on what others are giving. We no long-er excuse ourselves from giving because we do not see oth-ers giving. Rather we give in propor on to all that God has given to us. · Prayer - Spending Time with God Stewardship involves spending me with God. Recognizing that every day is a gi from God, we strive to spend some of each day with God, through prayer, Mass, Eucharis c Adora on, scripture read-ing, quiet, medita on and other spiritual ac vi es. During this me we ask God how He wants us to use the gi s He has given to us. · Par cipa on - Sharing Talent Stewardship involves shar-ing talent. Recognizing that God has given each individual unique skills and talents so that together we can do the work of Our Lord, we strive to share our own talents and to en-courage and welcome others to also use their talents to par-

cipate in the mission and ministry of the Church. · Generosity - Giving Treasure Stewardship involves giving treasure. Giving me and talent does not excuse us from giv-ing treasure. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus challenged us to give as it has been given to us. Aware of our tremendous fi-nancial blessings, we strive to give generously to support the building up of God's kingdom. We recognize the 10% the as an important sacrificial goal Although this level of giving may not be immediately possible, we are aware of what percent-age we are giving back. We regularly strive to increase our generosity, taking small incremental steps toward giving sac-rificially. · Stewardship is what God Calls Us to Do! To be a giving people. The concepts of giving God our “first fruits” and of

thing a fair percent were first men oned in the Old Testa-ment. About half of Our Lord’s parables address the proper use of our recourses and Jesus talks about money five mes more than He talks about prayer. Generous giving is funda-mental to our faith tradi on. As the US Catholic Bishops' write in their Pastoral Le er on Stewardship, Stewardship: A Disciple's Response, "Once one chooses to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, stewardship is not an op on."

• Par cipación - Compar endo Talentos La corresponsabili-dad implica compar r talentos.

• Generosidad - Dar Tesoro La corresponsabilidad implica dar tesoro.
