Macular Degeneration?

Fire lit up the sky last Thursday night in the area of the Gila River Beaches southwest of the Kearny Airport and could be seen from miles away. The blaze apparently was caused when a truck belonging to Aaron Kent Goodridge of Kearny caught fire. According to statements made by Goodridge to the Kearny Police Department, he got his truck stuck in the

sand and in the process of trying to get it out somehow the friction caused the vehicle to ignite into flames. The fire quickly spread and burned several acres of wild land before being contained by the Kearny Fire Department. The fire crew stayed on the site all through the night monitoring the area and watching for hot spots. The truck which was totally destroyed was

According to the Kearny Police

Department, there was no information that the

incident was criminal in nature.

Editor: As much as he wants to run away from it, Sheriff Paul Babeu does not have a balanced general fund budget (he will likely be over by one million this year). In fact, this will be the second year in a row that he will have exceeded his general fund budget. As an election year ploy, the Sheriff has started throwing around numbers, making accusations and trying to scare the public in an attempt to turn your attention from the simple fact that he cannot manage the taxpayer’s money. His diversion tactic to have you to focus on the county

courthouse renovations is also intended to take away attention from his mismanagement and legal troubles. Every Pinal County elected official stuck to their budget this year, except for one—Paul Babeu. This is a Sheriff who oversaw a reorganization of his department that resulted in salary increases for many at the top of his organization. Paul Babeu likes to accuse county leaders of not wanting to hire more deputies. But he won’t tell you that public safety has not been subject to a hiring freeze and is authorized to fill any budgeted

Letter to the Editor: Rios responds to Babeuor approved positions. In addition, in this budget cycle the Sheriff’s Office requested a $3.7 million in additional funds over last year’s budget—no additional deputy positions were in that request. When you go to the polls to elect your leaders, you expect them to be able to manage their departments and their budgets. The Sheriff has failed to do both and now he wants to try and blame anyone but himself. He can dance around this issue all he wants, but when the rubber meets the road—the elected official is ultimately in control

of their office. We have worked hard with the Sheriff’s Office to get his numbers in order. The taxpayers of Pinal County have bailed him out of his own poor budgeting decisions. But yet, Paul Babeu will write letters, pontificate at the top of his lungs and try to pass the buck. It’s time that the Sheriff realizes that he runs his department and not politicize his shortcomings by blaming the Supervisors for his problems. /s/ Pete Rios, ChairmanPinal County Board of Supervisors

FLORENCE – The Pinal County Public Health District is holding its monthly Diabetes Education classes in June. This month’s classes will deal with the Healthy Eating Conversation Map. The Healthy Eating Conversation Map is being widely used by physicians across the United States to help diabetics understand their condition in a simple and easy to read format. The map guides users through various parts of the disease with explanations of eating habits and dispelling myths. There are five different Conversation Maps: Overview of Diabetes, Healthy Eating, Monitoring and Using Your Results, Natural Course of Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes. Diabetes Education Program Coordinator Mary Gonzales hosts the free classes designed to educate those that suffer from the disease and offer them help in a supportive environment. All diabetics are encouraged to attend and share their experiences and how they’re coping with diabetes. The support groups will meet at the following locations:• Mammoth: Thursday, June 14, 1:00 pm. Mammoth Community Center; 101 Fifth Street• Superior: Tuesday, June 19, 10:30 am. Superior Senior Center; 326 Main Street If you would like to know more about the Diabetes Education Program, call Mary Gonzales at 1-800-231-8499 ext. 7338 or email at [email protected].

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has issued a sex offender notification for the Dudleyville area. Raymond Celaya Quiroz, 59, who resides in the 80400 block of East Palo Verde Avenue, Dudleyville, has been classified as a level two sex offender. He is a Hispanic male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. His offense was sexual assault and he was convicted in 1997. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the above information pursuant to A.R.S. 13-3825, the Community Notification on Sex Offender Law. The

offender in this publication is living in Dudleyville, Arizona. Notification must be made when certain sex offenders are released from the Arizona State Prison, accepted under an interstate compact or released from the county jail back into the community. Offenders are categorized into three levels: Level One (low risk to the community), Level Two (intermediate risk to the community), and Level Three (high risk to the community). The individual who appears on this notification has been convicted of a sex offense, which allows for community notification.

Sheriff’s Office issues sex offender notificationHe is not wanted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office at this time. This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather it is our belief that an informed community is a safer community. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. Unless court ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever he chooses.

Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass sex offenders will not be tolerated. Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but because of Megan’s Law, law enforcement is now able to share this information with you. Police caution that any use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass or create an act against another person will result in prosecution.
