Annie Marie Garner, 85, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. She was born on her dad’s birthday at Butner, Oklahoma to parents A.A. Haning and

Annie Marie GarnerDecember 28, 1925 - December 3, 2011

Annie Marie Garner

Nellie Edna Butler. She was raised on a farm. The family was poor but she didn’t know how poor until after she was grown. Marie was valedictorian of her eighth grade class. She married Luther R. Garner in 1942 and together they raised six children. In the 1960s, they lived in Dudleyville. At the time, Marie wrote for the local newspaper, The Copper Basin News. The couple was very happy and loved the Lord with all their hearts. In 1976, after Luther passed away, Marie threw herself into religion. After much studying, she became an ordained

minister, opening her New Beginnings Church in Winkelman. Marie has written many religious songs and poems and touched so many lives. Everyone who knew her will remember her as loving the Lord a great deal and being sharp as a tack. She loved to read and work crosswords. She had a wonderful sense of humor and even until the end, she was a wise crack. The Lord has taken this earth angel home to be by his side. She earned her crown of jewels and a seat by God’s throne. She leaves behind children, Ronnie (Barb) Garner of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Lou Ann Griffi th, Nora (David) Kelly and Shelly Fisher, all of Oracle; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Luther; sons, Freddie and Andy; grandson, Adam; and great-grandson, Elias. Services and interment will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Dudleyville Cemetery.

Editor, Copper Basin News: We are writing to thank all of you that contributed to the first ever Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Fellowship Baptist Church, Kearny. The dinner of fresh roasted turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, dressing, veggies, sweet potatoes, fresh breads and rolls and lots of

pies was appreciated by all in attendance. What a great time everyone had: families, children, neighbors and even some out of town guests! We had a special gratitude sharing time after dinner. How wonderful it was to hear all the testimonies of what the Lord has been doing in the lives of those

in attendance. God is so good; but, sometimes, it is hard to see and realize this. Sometimes the problems of daily life and the turmoil of the society we live in can get in our way and cloud the true blessings and sometimes miracles that do happen around us and in our own lives. We especially thank Gordon’s IGA for donating

Letter to the Editor: Contributions to first dinner very much appreciated


The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is hosting a free electronics waste recycling event on Saturday, Dec. 10, in the parking lot of Ray Unified School District, 701 North Highway 177, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. ADEQ and co-sponsors, the towns of Kearny and Hayden, ASARCO LLC (Asarco) and Ray Unified School District # 3, anticipate collecting tons

of unwanted televisions, computer equipment, monitors, batteries, chargers, cell phones, VCRs, CD and DVD players, printers, small appliances, fax machines, stereos, cables and cords during the event. “We are excited about being able to collaborate with the towns of Kearny and Hayden and our other co-sponsors to put on this much needed event for a

second straight year. At our event, last year, we collected eight tons of electronic waste,” said ADEQ Director, Henry Darwin. “This is a great opportunity for people to dispose of their unwanted electronics while at the same time ensuring that this potentially toxic stream of waste is disposed of responsibly and does not take up valuable landfill

space,” he added. Tom Aldrich, Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Asarco, said the event offers the surrounding communities a much-needed opportunity to recycle used electronic equipment. “We are excited to be co-sponsoring this event with ADEQ and the other partners, because it provides Copper Basin residents a convenient

avenue to manage their electronic wastes in an environmentally sound manner and it is in keeping with the company’s commitment to product stewardship, recycling and the responsible management of wastes,” Aldrich said. Companies and individuals donating e-waste will receive a certificate of disposal for their records from E-Waste

Harvesters if they want the document. E-Waste Harvesters will erase all hard drives with state-of-the-art software and the company recycles all materials in accordance with State and Federal regulations. ADEQ has sponsored 49 events since August 2009 and collected nearly 1.3 million pounds from about 9,000 vehicles attending the e-waste events.

By Mila Lira The Kearny Town Council did not officially host its monthly meeting in November due to the lack of a quorum. Council members Sheila Stephenson, Lana Dalton, and Hank Martin were in attendance at the meeting. The council could not conduct any official business but they

were able to hear the audit 2010-11 presentation by Scott Powell of Colby and Powell. Powell commended the council and the staff for assisting with the preparation of the audit. Powell shared with the council how many communities throughout Arizona continue to have a rough

time financially due to the slow economy and the cutbacks at the state level. He also commented that many communities have borrowed monies from their Highway User Revenue Fund (HURF) and those communities were being audited by the State Auditor General this year. He reported that Kearny has not borrowed

money from the HURF fund to cover general fund expenses. Overall Powell explained that Kearny has had an average or what he called a “flat” year. This means that the long term liabilities for the town have decreased and the net assets and revenues have remained the same from the previous year.

All expenses were covered using appropriate funding and the cut backs that were made in the budget have kept the town from overspending or going over the town’s expenditure limitations set by the state. Members of the council thanked town staff, Powell and their staff for their diligence and integrity.

Powell complimented the Kearny council and staff for their leadership, he provided some examples of how this economy and lack of leadership has caused many problems for other communities in the state. A copy of the full audit is available at the Kearny Town Hall, 912-C, Tilbury Drive.

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Lobo varsity basketball team traveled to Tucson on Friday and Saturday November 25 and 26 to play in the Immaculate Heart Holiday Hoops Tournament that consisted of fi ve teams with a round robin format. The Lobos’ fi rst opponent in the tournament was the team from Alta Vista High School from Tucson. The Lobos broke out to an 18-13 fi rst quarter lead behind Julian Gomez’s 11 points and built on the lead behind the play of Gomez and Adrian Ochoa in the second quarter to go into the halftime break leading 36-22. The Lobos came out a bit cold in the third quarter but the play of Marcos Gonzales kept the Wolfpack at bay with the Lobo lead now 45-34 at the end of three periods. Gomez’s scoring touch came back in the fourth quarter to hold back a torrid comeback by the Wolfpack to win the game 62-54. Again, all the scoring came from the starters with Julian Gomez leading the way with 30 points. Marcos Gonzales dropped in 16 points with Adrian Ochoa adding eight points to go with his outstanding play on defense. Matthew Manriquez had fi ve points with Roman Padilla getting three points to go with his good defensive play. The Lobos’ next game was against the host team, Immaculate Heart High School Knights. The Lobos broke out to a commanding 19-10 lead in the fi rst quarter with great play from the entire team. The Lobos extended their lead in the second quarter behind the play of Adrian Ochoa on the defensive side playing a monster of a game with his shot blocking. Going into the half time break the Lobos led 29-17. The Lobos were a bit sluggish in the third period

Lobos win three of four at Immaculate Heart Hoops Tourneybut managed to hold back the Knights to lead 38-27 after three periods of play. The Lobos turned it on in the fourth quarter behind the scoring of Gomez and the defensive play of the entire team on the court especially the shot blocking of Ochoa. When the fi nal buzzer went off, the Lobos were on top, 58-39, to win their fi rst two games of the tournament. Again all the scoring

came from the starters. Julian Gomez, despite missing more than a handful of easy shots, pumped in 24 points with Adrian Ochoa adding 12 to go with his outstanding defensive play. Matthew Manriquez had a good game scoring 10 points to go with several assists and Marcos Gonzales added nine points before going out with a sprained ankle. Roman Padilla had

three points and had an outstanding game on the boards. The Lobos returned to Tucson on Saturday to take on the Academy of Tucson Lynx in their third game of the tournament with a depleted team when a starter and a key reserve did not make the trip due to injuries. The Lynx team was the only team that did not have a height advantage on the Lobos.

The Lobo starters built a lead over the Lynx and turned the game over to the reserves, a tactic that almost backfi red on the Lobo coaches when the Lynx came back to take an 11-14 lead after a quarter of play. With the starters back on the court, the

Lobos held back a Lynx team that had become very confi dent in their shooting fi nally overtaking the Lynx late in the second quarter to lead 24-22 after two periods of play. It would be as close as the Lynx would get.

The Ray High School Marching Band brought home a “Superior with Distinction” award last month after participating in the Arizona State Marching Band Festival. The Superior with Distinction award is the highest honor and means

the band did not just receive a Superior by average overall scores, but all three judges, who are professional music educators, awarded the group with a Superior rating. The band reached the state competition by attending

Ray Band earns top honors at state marching festival; to hold concert tonight

the State Qualifier held in October at Eastern Arizona College where it was awarded an Excellent

rating. The group then had only two weeks to perfect their marching show to try to earn the next level of

Superior at State. According to Band Director Phelan Bauman the students went above and beyond her expectations to earn this top award along with a caption award for flag/dance/auxiliary. “I have never heard the band play more musically on the field than they did that early morning at State,” she said. She added that although

the morning was crisp with frost and the musicians had frozen fingers, the judges and audience were dazzled by the ever present Bearcat Band’s pride of excellence. Bauman is inviting everyone to honor the band’s success and enjoy its new Concert Season at the Winter Concert this evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Ray District auditorium.

By Georgie Wood([email protected]) This short article de-scribes the continuation of my problem with the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) over the excessive August 1, 2006 flood damage to my field which I and others believed was caused by the upper fish barrier of the two barriers that BOR had built in Aravaipa Creek. After I had filed two different damage claims within certain specified times and with the required cost-of-repair estimates, I received the same excuse from the office of BOR’s Field Solicitor in Phoenix - that no government negligence is indicated. Because the Goldwater Institute’s website claimed

that the Center for Consti-tutional Litigation would litigate in the area of property rights to assist individuals the government has harmed, with the clients receiving free legal representation, I wrote to the Institute. I wrote that I hoped they would be willing and able to aid me in my efforts to enforce the proper Government Agency to accept its responsibilities, but one of the answers I received stated, “The issues involved are complex and entirely outside of our expertise.” Because one of Sena-tor John McCain’s causes appeared to embrace needed government change, I twice sent certified mail to his Phoe-nix office, and I was notified

by a person other than Senator McCain that my mail had been sent to his Tucson office. No help there! In my letter to the office of Dirk Kempthorn, Secre-tary of the Interior, one of the things I wrote was, “If I were to do something that would cause damage to my neighbors’ property, I’m sure that I would immediately be held responsible.” My letter brought no help, and, of course, I also did not expect to hear from Mr. Kempthorn directly. One response from his office was from one whose signature was unreadable, and a response also had the year of the flood wrong! My dictionary’s definition of a bureaucrat is an official

States Government, or those who are hoping to be elected or appointed to important positions, have the intellect and integrity to make final de-cisions that will not adversely impact the lives of other good United States citizens. The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company visited Ray Schools recently and presented two performances of “The Life of Leonardo de Vinci” to an audience of enthusiastic students and adults. This marks the fourth year the California based company has visited the Copper Basin area, sponsored by the Friends

of the Kearny Library. The productions change each year and this year’s play depicted de Vinci’s life from the time he was a child into adulthood. By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden High School Lady Lobo basketball team traveled to Globe over the weekend to play in the 31st Annual Copper Cities Girls Basketball Invitational with very little success against some very good girls basketball teams. The Lady Lobos met up with the Lady Miners from San Manuel High School in their first game of the tournament with both teams having problems finding the opening to the basket. Maybe the cold in the gym had something to do with the game, a low scoring game with a lot of excitement especially in the second half. With the score 8-8 after one half of play, the scoring did not get any better for either team with the final 14-16 in San Manuel’s favor. Only two Lady Lobos were able to get the basketball in the hoop with Devin Estrada leading the way with ten points and Demitria Boltarez getting the other four points. The second game of the tournament found the Lady Lobos still trying to find the opening to the hoop against a fast and scrappy team from San Tan Foothills High School. The Lady Sabercats broke out to a 4-16 lead at the end of the first half but the second half was all Lobos. The Lady Lobos finally found their shooting range and came back strong in the second half as the Sabercats went cold. Behind the offensive play of Demitria Boltarez and Yvonnah Gonzales and the defense of the entire Lobo team, the Lady Lobos defeated the Lady Sabercats 24-20. Boltarez led Lobo scoring with 10 points followed by Gonzales with seven points. A hustling Devin Estrada had four points with Clarissa Chavez adding two points and Melinda Marinez one point.

The Lady Lobos final game on Thursday night was against the Lady Gophers of Florence High School. The first half of the game against the Lady Gophers was exciting with the Gophers breaking out to an early lead. But a hustling Lobo team fought back to get within five points of the fast and running Gophers at the end of the first half trailing by five 11-16. The cold conditions in the High Desert Middle School gym must have gotten to the Lady Lobos again as they came out cold in the second half of the game only scoring six points to drop the third game 17-35. Yvonnah Gonzales led the Lady Lobos with six points followed by Devin Estrada with five points, Melinda Marinez with four and Demitria Boltarez with two points. The Lady Lobos returned to the cold confines of the High Desert gym on Friday to take on the tournament favorites, the Lady Eagles of Sandra Day O’Conner High School, a very tall, very talented team. The Lady Lobos had no answer to the superior height advantage of the Lady Eagles dropping the game with a score of 26-53. Demitria Boltarez had an excellent game scoring 14 points and played well on the defensive side. Yvonnah Gonzales had her hands full trying to defend the tall post player from O’Conner and managed to drop in eight points. Mary Lechuga and Ashley Cruz each scored two points apiece. The entire Lobo team played hard against the team from Division One, but they were just too big and physical. With their one win against three losses in pool play, the Lady Lobos went into bracket play with a low seeding playing in the second game of brackets again taking on the Lady Sabercats of San

Lady Lobos fare poorly at Globe Copper Cities TournamentTan Foothills. A cold start to the game in the first quarter would come back to haunt the Lady Lobos in a close and exciting game. The Lady Lobo cold shooting put them behind in the first quarter 5-15 but they came back strong in the second quarter behind the scoring of Yvonnah Gonzales and Demitria Boltarez and the defensive play of the entire team to go into the first half break with a 22-26 score. The three point shooting of the Sabercat team put the San Tan team ahead by nine at the end of the third quarter with a 30-39 score but the Lady Lobos were not about to go down quietly. The Lobos picked it up in the fourth quarter but the Lobos lost some of their fire power when Boltarez fouled out midway through the final quarter. The final score ended 42-49 in a very exciting game by the teams. Demitria Boltarez led Lobo scoring with 18 points with Yvonnah Gonzales pumping in 15 hard earned points under the basket with her tough offensive rebounds. Melinda Marinez and Kyana Garcia added four points apiece. Devin Estrada had one point but turned in an excellent defensive game. The loss to San Tan put the Lady Lobos in the first game of the consolation bracket against a very scrappy and running Lady Coyote team from Combs High School. The cold confines of the High Desert gym again had an effect on the Lady Lobos as they came out cold scoring only five points

in the first quarter to the Coyotes 11. The Lady Lobos behind the scoring of Yvonnah Gonzales and the defensive play of the Lobos made the score 18-22 at the end of the first half of play. With Demitria Boltarez in foul trouble and having to sit most of the third quarter, Gonzales picked up the scoring and the entire Lobo team turned it up on the defensive side to cut the Coyote lead to 30-33 at the end of three quarters of play. It would be as close as the Lobos would get. The cold shooting came back and with Boltarez on the bench with her fifth foul, the Lady Lobos could only hit for four free throws, all by Gonzales, and the Coyotes took advantage to take the win and eliminate the Lobos from the tournament with a 34-43 score. Yvonnah Gonzales led Lobo scoring with 16 points with Demitria Boltarez and Melinda Marinez adding six points apiece. Kyana Garcia, Devin Estrada and Clarissa Chavez each had two points. It was a hard choice for the all-tournament selection from the Lobo team coming down to the all-around play of Demitria Boltarez and Yvonnah Gonzales and the defensive play of Devin Estrada with the vote coming out in Boltarez’s favor for all-tournament. The entire Lobo team played well and they all deserved some recognition against some tough competition. The Lady Lobos made a return trip to Globe along

with the boys team to take on the Tiger teams from Globe High on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Information from those games was not available at press time. The Lobo teams will board the bus again on Thursday, Dec. 8, traveling to Superior to take on the Panther teams and will

be on the road again on Friday, Dec. 9, this time going to San Carlos to play the always hard playing Braves team. All the games will start at 5 p.m. with the JV teams on the court followed by the girls varsity game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys varsity game at 7 p.m.

Weather fails to dampen the spirit of Winter WonderlandBeing in that place all day brought back many great memories. We continued the day with every thing as scheduled. Without a space to land in a public gathering, Omni flight was unable to drop off Santa. Thanks for the offer. Mrs. Claus was heard to say when they left the North Pole, “It was a dry pack snow.” By the time Santa arrived in Kearny the cold wind and rain hit and the adults without children scurried while children waited patiently to talk with Mr. and Mrs. Claus while Vicki Clark took pictures of every child. Braving the storm, Alexa Armenta and Gabrielle Montano, Copper Basin Idols, sang to the group who were assembled. The Cardells in their elegant red velvet and silver suits appealed to the baby boomers with all the right music. They do their own mix for background using all the instruments they play.

Phoenix, AZ – Pinal County rancher Walter Meyer was among several ranchers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Nov. 19 to unveil an exhibition that showcases 100 portraits of ranchers whose families have been ranching for 100 years or more in Arizona. The Meyer family, which operates the Flying UW Ranch near Winkelman, joined Phoenix Airport Museum representatives, Phoenix Sky Harbor staff, public officials, art supporters and Arizona artist Scott Baxter to introduce “100

Years 100 Ranchers.” The exhibition is one of four projects that the Arizona Centennial Commission has designated as an Arizona Centennial Legacy. “The Phoenix Airport Museum is honored to premier this exhibition of photographs, 100 Years 100 Ranchers,” said Lennée Eller, museum curator. “Celebrating the Arizona State Centennial, these portraits document the ranching families that have defined Arizona for decades. During the last 10 years, Scott Baxter’s tenacity created this work as a true labor of love.”

Baxter traveled across the state for more than 10 years to complete this project, which includes striking black-and-white photos of ranch families from 14 of the state’s 15 counties. The exhibition includes displays throughout the entire Level 3 in Terminal 4 and will be showcased until May 12, 2012. “For me this was a great deal, this was a life-changing experience, and for me I just felt really fortunate and blessed to have been able to photograph these ranchers,” said Baxter.

Many arrived at 8 a.m. to start decorating Pioneer Park and were with us as we made our decision to go ahead and move to the Ray cafeteria structure. They cleaned the floors, decorated, helped serve food and some in their elf outfits were freezing as they assisted Santa and Mrs. Claus. These teenagers will be our future leaders and we applaud their actions in leadership. Also saving the day were RSC Rentals with the loan of their generator; Dub’s Plumbing who brought in Porta Potties on a moment’s notice; and the Chamber food booth was operated by Connie Hillian, her children and grandchildren. It goes with out saying, “Through rain, sleet and hail the Macy’s parade will go on.” All the Phoenix TV stations said the same for the Phoenix Electric light Parade. So it also goes in Kearny. Winners were: Most Creative, Escalante Family; Best of Show, Hayden Fire Department; Individual, Bob Goodridge; Group, ROTC (if these individuals go

on to serve in the Armed Forces this is not the worst storm they will have to be in. Accolades have been sent to us from the public for their marching in the rain. That was their decision to do so); Judge’s Choice, Mr. and Mr. Claus. The parade followed a different route ending up at the Cafeteria and was followed by the Fire Dancers whose dance movements were spectacular with the fire, background music, and costuming all set to put us in the Christmas spirit. We promised luminarias and you will get them. The Memorial Love Light Ceremony is Monday, Dec. 19, in front of the Pinal County Building. At that time the luminarias will line Alden Street. There were many beautiful ones submitted and this is one activity we won’t let the rain dampen. For those who spent the day with us we hope you have finally warmed up and are cozy and comfortable.Editor’s Note: Because of the rain (and a huge fear of ruining a camera), there were no photos taken of the electric light parade save the lone photo on the front page of this newspaper that was taken by James Carnes. He said he didn’t think it would come out at all, but we’re so glad he was wrong.

The Lobos settled down, began to play their game scoring and playing great defense, to take a 38-28 lead after the third quarter ended. The Lobos continued to pour it on in the fourth period playing with high intensity on the defensive side of the court and turned it on the offensive side to win the third game of the tournament with a 59-36 score. All the Lobo players that made the trip got some playing time with most of the scoring coming

from the starting unit. Julian Gomez again led the scoring with 23 points followed by Adrian Ochoa with 18 points. Roman Padilla had seven points with six points from Matthew Manriquez and five points from Gabriel Ramos. The Lobos lack of players would be very evident in the next game taking on a very tall – eight of their 12 players were well over six feet tall – and very talented team and very intense team in the Tempe Preparatory Academy Knights. with a fresh team coming into the game every four minutes. After a quarter of play, the Knights led 11-17 and never looked back. The Knights continued their same tactic sending fresh players at the Lobos building their lead to 24-34 at the end of the first half. The Lobos did not back down giving the Knights all they could handle in the third quarter but they just had too much fire power holding back the Lobos to protect their lead at the end of three periods 38-47. The lack of players, three starters fouled out of the physical game, and the influx of fresh players by the Knights finally wore the Lobos down winning the game with a 46-67 score. The Lobos put up a good fight against the

taller, physical and intense play of the Knights and showed the coaches a lot of fortitude and heart. The Lobos played very well against a superior team. The scoring by the Lobos again came from the starters. Julian Gomez had 15 points before fouling out early in the fourth period with Adrian Ochoa adding 14 points. Roman Padilla had nine points with Matthew Manriquez adding six points before fouling out early in the third quarter. Rodney Ortiz had an excellent game getting several rebounds, played well on defense and scored two points for the Lobos. The Lobos had a good tournament winning three of their four scheduled games and the tournament also showed the coaches where improvements will have to be made to make this a successful season of Lobo basketball.
